Behold Matt Wieters
Credit goes to Orioles Hangout, where I saw these videos posted as I perused their message board. The first video contains the highlights of Matt Wieters' first half of defense. The second is, obviously, the second half. Enjoy, friends! They may be a little premature when they titled the second one, but we all know he deserves it.
Edit! At least one clip (Carl Crawford getting thrown out twice) in the first video isn't from 2011. But it's still awesome. I love when he stares down the runner.

love the music selection for the first clip
however, at the 1:00 mark there is a clip of him throwing out Carl Crawford when he was on the Rays, so definitely not from this season.
Other than that, these were awesome.
clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose...
there are actually a number of them not from this year
Brian Roberts wearing #42?
Giraffes have absurdly strong necks.
that one was from this year
Roberts was still playing in the Jackie Robinson Day game this year, I also checked Baseball Reference and Michael Brantley got thrown out in that game (like in the clip)

I thought something like that
but then I looked at Matt’s helmet. There was also a Luke Scott appearance
Tommy hunter still sucks!
Great videos
Also watched the 2011 Markakis highlight video. I enjoyed the music. And the catch where he fixes his sunglasses before getting off the ground.

I love how Andino comes into the frame as the tag is made and does a little happy spin.

My favorite is towards the end of the first one
When Wieters holds down home plate from BJ Upton, then he just casually flips his glove in the umpire’s direction to show he held on. That is super badass.

Yeah also Upton's face afterward is priceless

A couple of observations...
1) Is there anything more badass currently related to the Orioles than after Wieters makes a great play, adjusts his old-school helmet, nods at the player that helped with the play, and then goes back to work?
2) On the clip where he threw out Tampa’s version of Crawford (i.e. the good one), he did it on a slider/curve.
3) It’s impressive seeing how consistent Wieters is using the natural tailing action on his throws to lead the tag into the runner.
4) Love to the middle infielders. More often than not, Wieters gives them a great throw. But they also made some really nice picks / moves in those highlights.
5) The tagout in Oakland shows just how great Wieters is with positional awareness, which is not easy for someone his size.
6) You can’t help but smile at the last highlight in the second video.
7) Wieters doesn’t have to hit .330/40/120 to win this town over (although, if he wanted to, I wouldn’t complain). You can tell from his work ethic and the pride he takes in his catching that he was made for Baltimore. How devastating would it be to ever see him in another uniform?
2) yeah I noticed it was on a 79mph breaking ball! Get owned CC

I think 3) reflects his background as a pitcher

Any chance he could use his off-days from catching to throw 5 innings for us? Then we could use our DH to replace Craig Tatum.

Lots of his CS are on breaking balls where the pitcher pays zero attention to the runner
He just gets rid of it so fucking quick and has such a fucking cannon.

i don't recall...
if he always had such awesome awareness of the plate, but i can recall a few tiems this year where he anticipated where a throw from the outfield was coming so he could catch it on the fly and then just reach back or a bit to his left to catch the sliding runner. it’s almost not fair.

RE # 3)
This one stood out for me. I kept thinking he shows better command on those throws than half of the pitching staff.

What if Wieters doesn't win the GG...
I mean seriously. Orioles AL ranks:
PB – 1st (4)
WP – 1st (32)
SB Allowed – 1st (83)
Wieters’ 19 tag outs also led the league.
What if they gave it to Russell Martin? They couldn’t. Could they?
"Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly; Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?' Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land; Man got to tell himself he understand.."
I think what you meant to say was,
What if they gave it to Russell Martin? They will. Won’t they?
Actually, my guess is they’ll give it to Alex Avila. After all, only playoff teams have gold glovers.
25 Wild Pitches in 1,150.0 innings behind home plate with these pitchers.
It boggles the mind.
There is not a single stat that I could find where he wasn’t leaps and bounds above the rest of the league. For the love of everything good on this earth, give the man a stupid trophy.
"Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly; Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?' Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land; Man got to tell himself he understand.."
If they don't give it to Weiters
they might as well just give to to Rafael Palmeiro and call it a day.
"Roberts is unconscious!!!!" - Jim Hunter, after Brian Roberts hits his second HR of the night. 9/21/09
Wieters isn't going to win for a couple reasons, none of which are his fault.
1) Wieters played spectacular defense. Avila played excellent defense. Avila played on a playoff team. Wieters did not.
2) Avila’s cERA was 3.90. Martin’s was 3.71 to lead the AL. Wieters’ was 4.57. He’s going to take the fall for the pitching staff, because it’s his fault that Matusz lost 5mph, the O’s signed Jo-jo Reyes, and Jake Arrieta’s arm fell off.
3) Wieters is dead last among qualifying AL catchers in Range Factor. Martin leads, followed by Avila. They both get a ton of strikeout/putouts from their pitchers.
4) Some moron will look at total runners caught stealing and say that it is more valuable that Avila and Martin led the league in erasing baserunners because so few runners tried to steal on Wieters. In effect, Wieters is too good here. It is actually more valuable to have more stolen base attempts and throw outs than to have the runner stand on first and not advance (especially when the O’s are going to give up a homer on the next pitch anyway).
Do you think they look at catcher ERA for the Gold Gloves?
I doubt it. Or range factor. Managers and coaches vote on the GGs. I don’t know what they use to decide, but I’d be surprised if it is any advanced numbers for catchers. I would guess it’s more who they “feel” is the best from what they have seen.
I agree it’s unlikely Wieters will win because the things he is good at are less likely to be noticed on a terrible team. It’s unfortunate, because I honestly think that Wieters numbers being what they are is all the more impressive on this Orioles team. I mean, his CS% is in spite of a pitching staff that seems to be genuinely incapable of holding runners on base. When they give him half a chance, he destroys dudes.

But those are the same coaches that aren't sending their runners
against Wieters. They have to know, or else they’d try to steal more.
"Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly; Man got to sit and wonder 'why, why, why?' Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land; Man got to tell himself he understand.."
This.
He was our All-Star largely based on his defense, and managers and coaches know he’s a very good defender. I think he actually has a pretty good shot; I won’t be stunned if he doesn’t win, but I don’t think I’m being delusional to hope he does.

gold gloves are dumb anyway
but yeah, Wieters is a no brainer
Tommy Hunter is Number One in my heart
I couldn't hate the music more, but the Matt Wieters being awesome factor makes up for it.

First off, excellent videos.
As someone was saying, Wieters throwing people out is probably the most badass thing to happen in Baltimore recently.
Secondly, Wieters, when he connects, has the sweetest swing in baseball. I watched about 19 of 22 homeruns on MLB.com recently and only 1 or 2 looked like he put any effort in at all. Such a pure swing. And from both sides of the plate!!!! I’ve used his swing (minus the leg kick) to teach people what a baseball swing should look like.

http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=18685433 (Watch the slo-mo on this one. Sweeeeet. As a baseball coach, fan, or even my silly British friend, you just have to grin when you see it.)
I watched the every Mark Reynolds homer video
you can really tell how if he keeps his weight back and keeps his head on the ball he hammers it.
I don’t know why (prolly b/c he smashes baseballs), but I would like to have him around for a few more years.
"Grow nothing, buy the 'Pen" (Wieters Weiners)
There is a fundamental difference between now and, say, 2006. I could see, with good coaching, Reynolds cutting down his strikeouts and becoming a .250/.350/.550 player. I could see, with good coaching, Reimold becoming a legitimate player capable of hitting .280-.290 with 25 HR. I could see Wieters getting better.
It’s a fundamentally different feeling to know your team sucks and to know your team sucks but the players there can definitely get better.
On the other hand, I don’t even want to talk about the pitching staff.
It would be interesting to see how his approach would change
if the O’s were a solid team and in contention. Either more focus on base hits or more on hitting bombs. I really hope we get to see the careers of Jones, Markakis, Weiters, etc. play out when the team is good instead of just going through the motions.
"Grow nothing, buy the 'Pen" (Wieters Weiners)
I could stand for it too.
I still maintain the awesomest homerun I’ve ever seen was hit by him in high school. I was watching my friends older brother play Reynolds’ (and BJ Upton’s) AAU team and Reynolds hit one about 415 feet down the left field line. Over the 285 fence (duh) and then over the interstate.
Obviously I’ve seen farther since then, but I was like 12 at the time and was standing next to the dugout. Massive shot from a 17-18 year old.
Nice story, bro
my friend went to college with a guy from Norfolk that used to play against the Uptons, David Wright, cuddyer I believe. I can imagine they have given a lot of ppl stories they will be telling for years.
"Grow nothing, buy the 'Pen" (Wieters Weiners)
I played against that team too
One of the nastier pre-college teams I ever played against.

Awesome video compilation, Stacey
the music rocks. Maybe SHJ wins a GG, maybe he doesn’t, but we all know he’s the best. Thanks
Best thing about the Scutaro play in game 162
He said he held up because of the crowd reaction. He wasn’t sure if the Baltimore fans were yelling because he made the catch, or if it was the opposite.
So the crowds we hate, comprised of local PHN band wagon fans and a few travelers from the north (from beyond Towson) contributed in some small way to the demise of the 2011 Red Sox. It’s a very small thing, but gratifying nonetheless.
Nice vids.
I saw the title and freaked out that no one told me that Matt won. derp.

Because honestly, that look he gives after he does his damn job gives me goosebumps. If I could be half as much of a stone cold killer, I’d probably be in the HOF for any sport I wanted.

The magic of his stare down is that he just doesn’t give a fuck. He’s not trying to intimidate, he’s just doing his damn job.
