Haven't followed it much, but my buddy just sent me this text:

“The Orioles management of the 40 man roster is ridiculous. They will probably lose at least two. How do you leave unprotected your minor league pitcher of the year. We lost Beato last year. This year it could be Bascom, Cole Mccurry and Johnson again. Ridiculous!”

Is this the feeling of the board as well? I’m probably not up-to-date enough to respond.

Will work for Recs.

by Wieters Wieners on Nov 19, 2011 11:01 AM EST reply actions

Not ridiculous in the slightest

Regardless of the award Bascom won, he won it as a 26-year-old against AA hitters after some bad years at AA and AAA both.

Both Johnson and McCurry have yet to show they can get AAA hitters out. In fact, they both do a very poor job of it. The Giants didn’t want to keep Johnson last year, and the Orioles obviously think he’s (a) not worth worrying about if they lose him, or (b) didn’t show enough improvement over the past year to tempt another team.

McCurry is an interesting story, but after his struggles both in AAA and the AFL, he doesn’t seem to be a candidate to stick with a major league team for the full year.

And so what about Beato? He had a 4.30 ERA in the National League, and it was considerably higher than that if April and May are thrown out, after people got a chance to see him.

i don't have too many bones to pick w/ his assessment...

obviously, beato is still young and may very well turn out to be good, but he wasn’t last year. basically, i’ll feel a lot better about the guys they’re not protecting if they don’t go out and spend millions on relievers and backup catchers.

I guess I agree with your friend

Not that I think any of the exposed guys are world-beaters, but I have some hope that Pelzer and McCurry could be better-than-average relievers.

I have no such hope for Pedro Viola and a few others the O’s chose to protect.

About, but with the issue of having to keep him on the roster all year long. These guys are typically C/C+ prospects with either low ceilings or with very little chance of reaching their potential.

Are there at least cheap spare parts to be had in the Rule 5?

I feel like the O’s haven’t even tried to use it for that much in the past. What was it last year, some A-ball relief pitcher?

When I write that it is pointless, I mean it does not fulfill what it was meant to do. It was meant to prevent hoarding and redistribute talent among lesser talented teams. It does not do that anymore. It now is basically an artifact whose use is basically to give yourself a one in twenty shot to find a useful reliever specialist or severely flawed backup.

I think it would be more useful if they just did away with it and instead added this:

Amateurs who sign at 21 or older are eligible for MiL FA status after 4 years
or
Amateurs who sign at 19 or 20 are eligible for MiL FA status after 5 years
or
Amateurs who sign at less than 19 are eligible after 6 years.

That would be more effective in preventing hoarding.

The Nats left a pitcher off their 40-man who looks pretty good to me

26-year-old righty starter Brad Meyers.

Very good control and a pretty high strikeout rate. He already had success at AAA so he should be ready to contribute in the majors.

I wonder if the Nats would trade him for a prospect who aren’t subject to the rule 5 draft? God knows the O’s could use a pitcher with good control.

"The key to winning baseball games is pitching, fundamentals, and three-run homers."

by ThreeRunHomer on Nov 19, 2011 8:05 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

He really is not very good. He is a right handed middle relief guy who got hit in the minors and has relatively unimpressive stuff. Graduate him to the majors and you have a guy who skirts the corners and has difficulty in getting anyone to chase a ball falling out of the zone.

by crawdaddy on Nov 19, 2011 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

for a guy who went straight from AA relief to the majors

An 87 ERA+ looks pretty good. Former 1st rounder, still has good life on his FB. I can see him having a career as a MLB reliever, which is a lot more than a lot of guys the Orioles have protected over the years.

by AndrewTorrez on Nov 19, 2011 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

Really? A WAR of -0.3 is the definition of replacement level. I think we all agree that Beato would be an adequate AAA pitcher. That is not special and it is equivalent to many players on the Orioles. He would have been the 5th or 6th option for the Orioles in their pen last year. Of guys with 30 or innings, Beato would have only beaten out Jason Berken.

I just don’t see the point in complaining about him being with the Mets. His addition on the Orioles changes nothing.

by crawdaddy on Nov 19, 2011 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

well, two things

1. You’re not really responding to my point. I agree with you that Beato’s 2011 numbers were nothing special. I think that’s made comprehensible by the fact that he was obviously not ready for the majors but was thrown out there anyway.

2. I don’t really disagree with you much; I doubt Beato is a future All-Star or anything. But I think we have some evidence that he’s a real talent, and I think it’s kind of ridiculous for one of the worst farm systems in baseball to be shedding talent when they have loads of crap still on the 40-man roster (both in 2010 and today).

No, adding Beato to the 2011 Orioles doesn’t make them a better team or anything — of course not. But fixing a broken system begins with doing the little things right.

by AndrewTorrez on Nov 19, 2011 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

My response would be that Beato’s talent is not going to impact the team and that there are several players in the organization with his talent. He really is a dime a dozen guy. I hope he proves me wrong because I do not wish failure on anyone, but protecting Beato made as much sense as protecting Pedro Viola or Pat Egan…you cannot protect everyone especially guys who are not going to be meaningful contributors.

by crawdaddy on Nov 19, 2011 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

i think the point is that beato over viola or egan is splitting hairs. beato and his potential upside can be found in every organization.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Nov 19, 2011 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

Most of whom...

…will be gone before Opening Day due to the player additions to come.

Another factor to consider is that Beato was originally a Mets draftee and is from New York. Absent that random factor, he might have skated through.

by Ampontan on Nov 19, 2011 9:58 PM EST up reply actions

I think that's a little harsh

Bad teams should be using the Rule 5 to see if they can find inexpensive role players. There are a few pitchers out there I would love to see the Orioles take a chance on…Brad Meyers and Nick Barnese (Tampa) are two that interest.

The Rule 5 serves to neutralize teams that are superior at developing talent, to lessen their advantage. So, this will hurt a team like the Rays and the Jays and help teams like the Orioles. At least the potential is still there for that IMO. But the Orioles will prolly pick someone like Adrian Rosario…

If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever

by dfa on Nov 19, 2011 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

I think you would have great difficulty showing that it redistributes talent in a meaningful way.

by crawdaddy on Nov 19, 2011 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

I think there is truth to this,

but part of the problem is that bad teams are poor evaluators of talent.

I would agree that that the Rule 5 is overblown, but I think it serves some purpose if the goal was to redistribute talent in some way. Take the 2000s, how many useful players were picked? A half dozen? Does that justify the exercise?

If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever

by dfa on Nov 19, 2011 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

Well…someone has a to be a good judge of talent, right? And little is of consequence since the rules changed in 2006. It just does not work in a meaningful way.

O's have a full 40-man roster

but yes, Barnese would probably be a top-10 prospect in the O’s organization.

I don't think any of those guys would be a serious loss

but they’re all better than Oliver Drake. That’s what I don’t get.

by AndrewTorrez on Nov 19, 2011 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

Drake was pretty phenomenal in Frederick this year:
4.44 K/BB
0.99 WHIP

Sure it’s Frederick, but those are pretty impressive. Any yes, he struggled in Bowie, but I would like to see how he does in Bowie next year. I would much rather keep him than guys like Greg Miclat (no SLG), Bascom has struggled in AAA, Steve Johnson is a fly ball pitcher who would get lit up in the AL East….McCurry is an interesting guy as mentioned above. But even still, Drake was the best of the lot IMO.

If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever

by dfa on Nov 19, 2011 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

but I think having a free roster spot would be even better. Agree that Miclat and Florimon are completely worthless.

by ThreeRunHomer on Nov 19, 2011 8:13 PM EST up reply actions

Drake in Bowie

He struggled at Bowie at first before being sent down, and did much better at the end of the year there. Sub 3.00 ERA for his last six starts. It ain’t how you start in the minors, it’s how you wind up after the constant adjustment process between pitchers and hitters.

He made some physical changes at Frederick - you know, player development - that improved his game.

It’s also probable that he will be converted to a reliever by the time he gets to the ML.

if you use chopped chili peppers

it will impart a little bit of spicyness to the meat, which is nice if you like that sort of thing. Other really strong flavors also work in brine, like cloves. Oh, and I have no evidence that this does anything, but I always seem to have leftover slightly-old citrus fruits around (oranges, lemons, limes that are just starting to dry out), and I throw those in as well.

SN Celebration Ale is incredible.

Haven't heard much about Antonelli

before now but if he can give us depth at 2nd and 3rd base it sounds good to me. Gotta figure before the end of next season one of those spots will need filling due to injury.

Also the second article about Antonelli said he would be competing with Davis at third. Has the team officially given up on Reynolds playing the hot corner?

I know his defense there was brutal last season but his production looks a lot better coming from third than it does coming from first.

Fast article

I know Andrew posted this article a few days ago. I didn’t get a chance to read it until today.

A major-league pitcher does not only control whether he gets ground balls or fly balls; he also has a significant degree of control over how hard the ball is hit, though the batter has somewhat more control over the quality of contact than the pitcher. I consider this an extremely significant finding.

Love it. I’ve always been a little skeptical of DIPS because it didn’t control for the velocity of hits. Looks like Fast will address this next. I strongly suspect that the analysis will be able to further separate luck and skill exhibited by the pitcher on BABIP data.

by birdman on Nov 19, 2011 3:41 PM EST reply actions

that's a really significant finding

and like you, something just struck me as not-quite-right about DIPS. That really squares with intuition (not that intuition is always reliable in baseball analysis, obviously).

by AndrewTorrez on Nov 19, 2011 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

It is nice to have more concrete data showing this, but the issue with DIPS has been known for about a decade. Just hasn’t been as well defined.

i’m usually greeted with resistance whenever i bring up that idea.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Nov 19, 2011 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

i like because the common response to a crappy pitcher with a high BABIP is bad luck. With Fast’s work, I think we’ll have a more sophisticated answer. We should be able to say there’s some bad luck, but the pitcher is responsible for giving up a ton of rockets that landed for base hits.

Anybody else notice

How hatred has been spreading like wildfire in the area recently? I was at white marsh mall earlier and a truck with a couple skin head looking fellas had huge confederate flag flying off the back. Seems like everywhere in the county you can’t go 10 miles without seeing one on a sticker or one of them stupid front plants that seem be on trucks. 5 years ago I hardly ever seen any in the baltimore area. I’m white and my girlfriend is black an she was called the"N" word when we took a trip eastern shore not long ago. I honestly fear for her safety now whenever we venture past the city line. MD used be nice place to live, but I honestly can’t wait to save up to move to nyc or a more progressive area now.

by Michael18 on Nov 19, 2011 3:44 PM EST via mobile reply actions

The Eastern Shore is NASCAR country

Maryland’s a full of hicks if you go north of Baltimore or more than 20 miles west or east of I-95. Luckily 90% of everything good in Maryland falls within those boundaries.

As for NYC, I love living here but if you’re looking to avoid assholes you’d be better off looking elsewhere. People here will push a pregnant woman into oncoming traffic to get to the subway turnstiles 3 seconds faster. (That being said, I still much prefer NYC people to DC people…)

Anyone else I can offend in this post?

Imagine that.

One major political party embraces a racist-motivated element as a part of a cynical scheme to torpedo a presidency before it begins, and racists generally feel emboldened and spread.

Who could have foreseen it?

To defend my part of the state

An African-American person can and will still be called that word in ANY area of the country. Let’s not kid ourselves that racism is solely the province of the South. Boston had to have forced busing to integrate its schools 10 years after Wicomico County in Maryland did.

That said, not every person who flies a Confederate flag is a name-calling racist. No, I don’t fly one, and I certainly don’t have any rebel flag stickers on any vehicles. But I have friends and relatives who do, and they certainly wouldn’t shout those things at African-Americans.

And if you feel safer in Baltimore City limits than outside it, well, I’d say you have a perception problem, not a safety problem.

And if you prefer a massive, traffic-clogged and smog-ridden city like NYC, then I’d venture to guess we on the Shore don’t have much you want, anyway.

"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King

by duck on Nov 19, 2011 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not saying everybody flying

A confederate flag is racist. However, it certainly has gone way up since Obama was elected. We are not as bad as maybe Mississippi, but no doubt racism is on the rise in MD. I live in a mostly black part of the city with my girlfriend and I’ve never been called “cracker” or any other racist term. But my girlfriend just in the past year has been called the “N” word twice. Once in eastern shore and once in Rosedale. Could of happen more to her, but that was what I witnessed being next to her. I later though found out the leader of the MD skin head runs his operation out of a gym in the Rosedale area near chesaco ave.

by Michael18 on Nov 19, 2011 7:46 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I'd argue the opposite - I'd say the Shore is MORE tolerant than ever.

I teach at a 53% minority school, and in the 18 years I’ve taught there, I can count the number of racially-motivated physical assaults on one hand with no fingers – ZERO.

Your anecdotal observations do not a trend make. Neither do mine, of course.

And there’s been an active Klan in Cecil County since I can remember. You’re seeing evidence of racism on the rise due to your new perception of aspects of this state that have been in existence for decades.

I do not believe that

a lot of people are turning into racists. But I argue that I believe racists are showing it more now. As what O’sFan21 mentioned of what he noticed while he was in Virginia Beach. I lived in VB a few of my high school years and probably only saw one bumper sticker that would be considered racist. Let me first mention that I graduated about 5 years ago. I went back over the summer to meetup with old friends and noticed a lot of racially insensitive stickers on cars and houses. I asked them whats up because when I lived in VB everybody got a long. They said since 08 they’ve notice a shift in peoples attitudes. Could it be a coincidence? Maybe, I don’t know.

by Michael18 on Nov 19, 2011 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

Except for all of my education, no.

But the very fact that there haven’t been any in your school for 18 years is evidence enough that it’s not a good barometer.

Well...

Southern racism and Northern racism manifested themselves in different ways. You teach American history, right? Even if you don’t, you probably know that the North’s mentality for a long time was, “Oh, no, I don’t want them enslaved and I don’t want to kill them, but I don’t want blacks moving in next to me and I certainly don’t want them sitting next to my child in school.” That’s racism, and because of that, it makes sense (at least to me) why Boston didn’t integrate the buses.

Though that’s a separate issue. But considering the Civil War was about the enslavement of blacks (please don’t tell me otherwise because if you do, I’d refer you to the letters of secession from the Southern states), I think flying a confederate flag implies some sort of pride in what the South was fighting for. Sure, they’ve probably moved past wanting to enslave blacks, but racism? It’s there, just probably not out in the open.

And I suppose that’s not such a bad thing. As long as their not acting on their racism, let them think and say things in the privacy of their own home. I’m not the PC police. I understand that society is never going to be totally tolerant and there’s not a lot we can do to change that. Frankly, I’m not going to say that I don’t have racist thoughts sometimes. I do, but I’m not planning to act on those thoughts. If that’s the case with your neighbors, let them vote against Obama because he’s black (I realize, however, that’s not the only reason they would vote against him). Going around calling people names is another thing.

/stepping off my soapbox.

Contrary to popular belief, I am not Jewish.

by DCO'sfan on Nov 19, 2011 8:05 PM EST up reply actions

I won't argue reasons for the Civil War

It was primarily about preserving slavery, which the South used as a supporting detail in their perceived fight against Northern aggression. It was the root cause, but they chose to portray it as a supporting detail. But yeah, it was slavery.

And I do have black neighbors, and I’m not entirely sure they voted for Obama, and I know I had some white neighbors that did.

"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King

by duck on Nov 19, 2011 8:32 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

There's really not much to argue about.

The Southern states basically said in their letters that they wanted slavery and that’s why they were seceding. Then they turned around and said it wasn’t about slavery when they were on the losing end. I think that’s basically what you said, though.

And sure, if you look at the 2008 election statistics, in almost all the Eastern Shore counties, Obama got at least 40% of the vote, sometimes a lot more (but didn’t end up winning). That’s a significant percentage. And you can contrast it to Garrett County, where Obama got 29% of the vote. Or even turn it around and see that McCain only got 10% of the vote in PG county (whoa!) Fact is, most places you go in Maryland with the exception of Garrett County, really, there’s going to be a shit ton of Democrats. More in central Maryland, Baltimore City and its suburbs that the more rural areas, but there’s still a lot.

Basically I’m not saying that every one of your white neighbors wouldn’t vote for Obama because he’s black because 46% of Wicomico County voted for him. Now, it probably won’t look the same in 2012, but I agree that there are some misconceptions about the redder areas of Maryland, just from looking at the election results. I’m sure they don’t tell the whole story, but a flaming racist wouldn’t vote for a black president if his life depended on it. I think you see that mentality more in Western Maryland than on the Eastern Shore, although I could be wrong. Even in Cecil County (where there’s a Klan presence) Obama got 41%.

This just went in an entirely different direction but whatever. Interesting stuff! Here’s the link if you want to see the results.

Contrary to popular belief, I am not Jewish.
