This might be a reason to offer Luke a contract
It had a lot of healing to do. Andrews used two anchors to repair a SLAP tear and five to repair a posterior tear that wasn’t evident in an MRI.
“The posterior is what was affecting my swing,” Scott said. "It was causing the bat head to go down and slow down. I still had power because I was strong with my top hand, but as far as being accurate, because of my lead hand, which is more important, I wasn’t able to crush the ball. I was popping up and I couldn’t figure out why. There was no stability.
If there was a physical reason Luke lost power that’s been fixed, he could be capable of numbers much better than 2011.

Here's a quote from an email I sent to my boss (a Maryland alum) after the Towson game...
This is the first time a 28-3 win has made me feel like Maryland may not win another game for the rest of the season.
And her response:
It was so depressing. After the Temple game this should have been a "Get Well" game. Instead it was a get sicker. They do not have a prayer against Ga Tech or Clemson or FSU.
Remember, the Towson game was after getting blown out of the water by Temple.
I was being somewhat facetious above. You win a championship, you deserve credit. But it does serve to reinforce the FBS / FCS division that exists for the most part (Appalachian State, aside), when Towson can lose to a horrible, horrible Maryland team, but win the CAA. Bad Maryland teams are very beatable by good FCS teams, as evidenced by the 2009 James Madison game… but Towson wasn’t even really close despite Maryland playing like crap.
by Tezcatlipoca on Nov 21, 2011 11:10 AM EST up reply actions
No hatin on the CAA - ask VT (I kid, I kid)
Full disclosure: JMU alum, Towson employee
For a while now rumors have come and gone about the CAA making the jump as conference within the next 5 years. Misguided in so many ways, but CAA does often dominate the FCS rankings.
JMU just renovated the stadium to FBS minimum seating requirements (it’s pretty awesome).
I have neglected the Wafers.
Ugh...
There’s so little point in the CAA moving to FBS. They’d get pounded on by Sun Belt teams. Why trade away a stead shot at FCS championships for getting slaughtered every week? They already get guaranteed paydays, now that one win per season against an FCS school counts for bowl eligibility. CAA results against FBS schools:
New Hampshire: lost to Toledo, 22 – 58
Maine: lost to Pitt, 29 – 35
Massachusetts: lost to Boston College, 17 – 45
Rhode Island: lost to Syracuse, 14 – 21
Towson: lost to Maryland, 3 – 28
James Madison: lost to North Carolina, 10 – 42
Delaware: lost to Navy, 40 -17
William & Mary: lost to Virginia, 3 – 40
Villanova: lost to Temple, 7 – 42 (this is particularly galling, because the Big East wants Villanova to bump up)
Richmond: in the sole CAA win over a “FBS” school, beat Duke 23-21

Whatever, I am currently enrolled at Marshall, and their jump to the FBS has been very successful...
…in that the program hasn’t completely folded, yet. 2009 Little Caesars Bowl champions, bitches!!!!
I’m not disagreeing that it’s not a great call, was just sharing some scuttlebutt.
I have neglected the Wafers.
ODU is the story of the year
1st year in the conference 6-2, 9-2 overall. Only their 3rd season with a football team. They’ll be too good for the CAA in another year or two.

I'm not an expert,
but I just graduated from William and Mary, so I like to pretend I am about a lot of different things. I hope this doesn’t happen. I’d rather be pleasantly surprised when a CAA team beats an FBS team. Example: William and Mary beat UVa in 2009, which was cool while I was at the game but stopped being cool when I got back to Williamsburg and everyone was being completely insufferable (Both my parents went to UVa and I root for them nationally).
This year, WM gets pummeled, as well they should have. Virginia’s having a good year, WM isn’t, but it’s more illustrative of what usually happens when FCS teams help FBS teams pad out their schedules. Moving to the FBS would result in having to face this competition all the time – and until CAA teams could build up their teams, it would happen a lot more often.
As it is, JMU, ODU, Richmond, and WM have to subsist on the scraps Tech and Virginia leave behind. That most likely wouldn’t change if they moved to the FBS, and it isn’t really a recipe for success, unless you’re playing against each other.
no, not Olney. But I hear good things.

Option 2)JJ starter/Street reliever
Seems like an absolutely unnecessary risk for little potential gain.

O’s thinking:
-We can get more value out of JJ as a starter than as a reliever! Lets move him!
-But then we have no closer!
-Quick, trade a starter for a closer!

Nowhere does it say the Oriole’s offered Guthrie to the Rockies. I think you are all reading too much into this.
Separate from the trade talk, does it make any sense to give JJ a shot at the rotation?
I'm for JJ in the rotation.
Yes, there’s an injury history, but almost every pitcher has had one injury filled season.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
yeah.. I'm kind of on board with the idea too
I don’t really see much downside to at least taking a look. I think it’s a lot harder to get quality starting pitching than it is to build a good bullpen (even though we’ve been going about that the wrong way for 10 years), so why not try to make one of your best pitchers a starter.
Because we have a few young SPs that have potential.
What about their development?

Some of them could stand to go back to the minors for a while.
I don’t see a starter logjam as a problem.
Remember, the Orioles had the single worst ERA in MLB last season – and their starter ERA was the worst as well.

I suspect that not all of them will pan out which will leave room for JJ.
Jeremy, JJ, Zach, Arrieta, and the Hunter will start the year in the rotation with Matusz and Tillman waiting in the wings. Matusz and Tillman are so fucked up right now it might be better to let them work out their issues elsewhere.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
Apart from my distaste with moving JJ to the rotation, I agree.

it's cool
I have a number of concerns:
1) Performance – is there really any reason to believe that a guy who has a career k/9 of 5.8 (last year – his best season yet – it was 5.7) can be successful going through lineups multiple times in a game? I don’t think K/9 is the be all and end all, but it makes me nervous. He also currently throws his fastball over 70% of the time, so he would clearly have to throw more off speed as a starter, and who knows whether his off speed is up to the task.
2) Preparation – the last time he had any starts at all was 2007, so he’s been training and preparing to pitch in relief for the last 3 full seasons. This has implications on his lifting, running, throwing, and mental preparation both in the off-season and during the season. I have serious doubts about the wisdom of just switching him back to being a starter in only one off-season – I worry both about the impact on him physically from an injury perspective and from an effectiveness perspective.
3) My last concern is just a risk/reward issue – why make a dramatic change to one of the few effective pieces the team has when the upside is…what…a decent number 4 starter? Nobody really thinks JJ can be a legitimate 1-3 do they? And the downside risks are pretty bad. I think he’s very likely to be terrible as a starter which will screw with his confidence, put a lot of pressure on a likely already taxed bullpen due to our other terrible starters, and after however many bad starts they throw him out there for it will probably require an adjustment period before he’s good out of the bullpen again. And then there’s the possibility of him getting hurt and not providing any value.
I feel like I might have had one other reason, but I can’t remember it right now…

I think it's more accurate to say that there seems to be a lack of
guidance given to the players about offseason training. I seem to hear about a lot of guys training with Brady or in Arizona, and then there’s Luke and his wood-chopping. But it seems as though the players aren’t given a workout/training schedule for the offseason, which to me is ridiculous.

well even with help, i'd still be doing a lot of it early

Second, a lot of thanksgiving foods like cranberry sauce and gravy actually taste better after resting for a few days. Even with help, i’m still limited to just 1 oven and 4 burners, so cooking things ahead of time streamlines the process.

Nah, stuff like gravy and cranberry sauce improves with a few days rest
Making the turkey stock alone was a 2 day process, so that couldn’t wait any longer. Roll dough is gonna get a slow, overnight ferment before being par-baked tomorrow, so those need to be started today too. On Thursday, i want to do nothing besides roast the turkey, warm up some casseroles, and sautee some vegetables. Anything that required assembly is going to be done by the time i leave for the girlfriend’s parent’s house wednesday afternoon.
Oh...I usually make a pan gravy with the drippings from the roasting turkey, so that isn't needed.

I’m not a vegetarian, but she is (she has a ton of allergies but is also a vegetarian on principle). I’m pretty open-minded when it comes to food, so I gave it a try and it’s pretty good. 1. Take one laptop, fairly fresh
2. Hit ON button, then grate teeth at stoopid warm-up music ‘cause you forgot to turn the sound off again
3. Go to your email acct
4. Download Thxgvg invite from US Embassy Moscow
5. Eat your brains out Thurs. at taxpayer expense
6. Punch out judge, then throw up on him; oh wait, that’s Sid
7. Not be embarrassed when caught taking a “doggy bag” home from the Embassy with two “leftover” roast turkeys in it, shouting Hey, I pay my taxes as you jump the security gate
We still suck, but on Sept. 29, 2011, we did a Very Cool Thing. Yeah, we did that.

My overseas Thanksgivings...
1) In Korea, I cooked carrots, mashed potatoes, and turkey in a rice cooker for my kids.
2) First one in China, another American friend and I sourced a turkey from a Brazilian restaurant, cooked pies in ovens at her boyfriend’s restaurant (private homes rarely have ovens in China), and made stuffing, carrots, sweet potatoes (purple ones in China), and the rest. Had a massive dinner at my wife’s place, which was really difficult because we couldn’t keep everything warm. My wife’s family took one look at the dinner, then went into the kitchen and only ate the turkey gibblets and neck.
3) Had Thanksgiving with my Chinese mother-in-law and Polish friend at a Vietnamese restaurant.

Best Thxgvg in Russia: 1997, city of Voronezh
US exchg students call me up 3 days before scheduled visit to their univ in Voronezh asking me to schlep them a 25 lb. frozen turkey from Moscow. I actually do it.
I arrive the night before, find out the students have invited all their teachers and various univ/city officials. The last thing I hear before crashing is one student saying Where are the instructions? This thing is clearly a mortal-lock for Doomed.
Next day: the turkey is fabulous, as are the accompanying mashies, gravy, veggies, etc. — even pumpkin pie they made scratch (where the pumpkin came from remains a mystery). City officials, teachers and ordinary Russians in attendance can’t stop telling me what a great dinner it is, what a great bunch of students I brought ’em and what a swell holiday Americans thought up.
Kinda nice. Every so often you get to feel really good about teaching.
We still suck, but on Sept. 29, 2011, we did a Very Cool Thing. Yeah, we did that.
Dr. Who movie?
No thanks!

The question is not who, Constable, but when!
I'll develop my own image. I'm an original man. A one and only. I just need some help.
Our Brian Matusz was a nominee for Least Valuable Player!
Brian Matusz, Orioles. The 2008 first-round draft pick still has good upside and battled injuries through parts of 2011, but that doesn’t take away from how dreadful his performance was this past season. In 12 starts, Matusz was 1-9 with a 6.59 ERA and 2.11 WHIP while averaging just over four innings per start. So not only was he causing his team to lose games, he was taxing the bullpen, hurting the Orioles’ chances in games he didn’t even start.

This is all part of Matusz's master plan to follow Halladay's career path.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
Did we sign Antonelli to a ML deal with guaranteed money?
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
I dunno about guaranteed money
But it’s definitely a ML contract. Or does a ML contract guarantee money?
I think it does, right?
Why would we do that? Couldn’t we have just signed him to a minor league contract?
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Maybe he wouldn't come here for a minor league contract
If they sign you to a major league contract and assign you to AAA, does that mean you get paid a ML salary at AAA, or does it mean you can opt out? Where can I find the answers to these things?
That's gotta be what it was.
I think we pay him that regardless of where he is, but I’m not positive.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Not that I have a problem with it
seems like a good gamble to make – was just curious if anybody knew.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
I think he'd have to get DFA'd to end up in AAA.
Probably would have to pass through waivers. Although I’m not entirely sure about this stuff.
But it seems like we are paying the major league minimum for a utility infielder with not-terrible career hitting numbers in the minor leagues (the International League, no less, so none of that hitter-crazy PCL nonsense), which is pretty much what we should be doing. Last year we paid $1.5 million for a non-hitting utility infielder who spent the whole season hurt. The two years before that, we spent a total of $5 million on that same non-hitting utility infielder and called him our starting shortstop.

So we're, uh, getting....smarter?
Say it ain’t so. Give me a four-year deal for David Ortiz so I can feel safe again.

Oh yeah I have no beef with it
was just curious.

These ensure you don’t give a shit about breakage!

At least it's not us being fucking crazy.
Though I can’t wait to see what special brand of O-nsanity that DD will bring to the table.
This reminded me what a great closer Joe Nathan was. His peak is right up there with the soem of the best closers ever.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
fwiw...
they just signed a minor league pitcher that crawdaddy identified as an interesting minor league fa option over at camden depot last week.

Britt says we signed Chong Tae-Hyon.
#Orioles have agreed to terms of a deal w. RHP Chong, according to a source. More to come on Orioles.com.

exactly... i like the moves because none of them have been big
although, it’s sure to piss off the large contingent of fans who want nothing less than to spend $200m on 1B
fuck that contingent of fans in their eye sockets

Interesting
Wikipedia indicates that he is a 33 y/o right hander submariner. I wonder who scouted him.
As Stacey mentions above, this move is likable. Exploiting the international market seems like something a functional organization would do. Kind of a weird feeling.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
is it possible...
dave stockstill did it?

That was my first thought on it,
I’m having a hard time reconciling all of this.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
I want to know if he plays Zerg, Protoss or Terran.

meh
i like the fact that duq is mining the international market. but he’s a 33 year old reliever. it’s hard to get excited about that. if he was some white dude who grew up in nebreska, nobody would even pay attention to the signing. that said, hopefully he’ll be a good, cheap reliever for the next few seasons. and i certainly prefer this signing over some expensive reliever. plus i get to root for korean my homeboy that’s cool. don’t shame your country young man.
