Ugh...girls in these pick'em pools can get really annoying (no offense to those ladies who aren't annoying in pick'em pools)
The one girl in my office pick’em has her boyfriend do all of her picks for her. She finally won a week (thanks to the MNF points) and was like….“oh, I didn’t even try this week and still won.” I have to listen to this pretty much every week. What a pain.

Chong
The stats from Korea are not comprehensive, but we do know that he has a reasonably low H/9, but he walks a lot of guys (3.27 BB/9) especially compared to the low number of strikeouts he has (7.08 K/9). His principle strength appears to be an extremely low HR rates. For the last three seasons, he’s allowed only one HR per season, for a 0.19 HR/9.
I was wondering how the KBO and MLB compare on strikeouts and walks, so I did a quick check. KBO averages 3.8 walks per game while MLB averages 3.1. KBO averages 6.6 strikeouts per game while MLB averages 7.1. It strikes me that Korean hitters trade off power for more patience and contact. I can’t find enough statistics to figure out how Kim Byung-Hyun fare in these rate stats between his time in MLB and the Japanese League.
I’m concerned if we’re picking up a guy who can’t get the ball over, since Chong will likely be coming into the game after Gregg’s walked the bases loaded. But, it looks like he might be able to take advantage of more aggressive MLB hitters. If he keeps the ball sinking, he should be able to be a slightly better than league-average 7th / 8th inning guy.
I love that we snared a Wyvern
My fave fantasy creature from D&D days.
Crazy to make any judgements on those little clips, but my flash reaction was that he’s one of those guys who throws low but his pitches finish up. That can work in a real strikezone, but in the MLB strikezone where the high strike has totally disappeared… Suffice it say, I have an irrational fear that he will walk even more over here than in the KBO.
On the other hand, props to the O’s front office for locating Korea on a map.

This is what makes baseball greater than all other sports...
Actual unique stadiums. The majority of stadiums in baseball, you know where you are. They’re unique. They incorporate into the city. There are some NFL stadiums that are more unique than average, but rarely do they incorporate into a city and become identifiable with that city. College stadiums are better for variety (one of my favorites is the University of Colorado).
Current European stadium design is awful. Closed-in bowls. Yes, they are modern closed in bowls, but they’re still Veterans Stadium for a new decade.
by Tezcatlipoca on Nov 22, 2011 9:57 AM EST up reply actions
It's soccer....you kinda want a closed bowl so you can actually see.
That’s why football games aren’t played in baseball stadiums.

I certainly understand why stadiums end up the way they are...
I’m just saying that if you set the sport aside, Camden Yards or PNC Park are more beautiful than Allianz Arena in Munich or Red Bull Arena in New Jersey, in my opinion.

Personally, I think Allianz is gorgeous
and the color changing exterior is one of the most unique stadium features in the world
Allianz is one of the better soccer-style arenas in the world.
I like lighting, but I don’t think it outweighs the actual structure itself. That being said, the exterior does have a certain visual quality.
However, can you name the following stadiums without looking them up?

Like twisted said, Wembley's the easiest
especially with the bright red seats. Allianz i got because i was just looking at pictures when were talking about it earlier. Luzhniki stands out due to the track and the roof.
theres also no reason the inside of a stadium should be that unique
you have a regularly shaped field that people are spending the vast majority of their time looking at. Interior stadium design should prioritize two things: (1) sight lines, and (2) ingress/egress. You want unique architectural touches, do it in the concourses and the exterior.
Interior stadium design should prioritize two things: (1) sight lines, and (2) ingress/egress.
I completely agree with these priorities. A fundamental tenant of architecture is “form follows function.” That being said, I don’t think that unique architecture touches are mutually exclusive with the top two priorities.

Okay, here's one area I simply don't know enough about...
I’ve been in the upper deck at Beaver Stadium and in the upper deck at M&T Stadium. The Ravens game was very watchable in our endzone from that point of view (directly in the middle of the endzone in the upper deck). The upper deck at Beaver Stadium makes it more difficult, even when the game is at your half of the field. On the other half, both stadiums suffer a severely degraded quality of experience.
I don’t know how these experiences would translate to a soccer game, as the largest soccer stadium I’ve been in is… um… my high school girlfriend’s games in our 2,000 seat football stadium. Is there a point at which you just can’t get any more spectators around a soccer field and still have it be enjoyable for all? Is there an ideal stadium attendance target?
by Tezcatlipoca on Nov 22, 2011 10:50 AM EST up reply actions
I think in general its easier to watch soccer than football from a distance
since the action is more spread out. My MLS season tickets are in the 10th row, and I often wish i was actually up a little higher, especially when the action is on the other side of the field.
Where's New Jersey?

I agree that baseball stadiums tend to be more beautiful
but Red Bull stadium is pretty cool looking. And trust me, it’s better off not being identifiable with the area it is in.
"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
Haha... good point.
Some areas don’t need to be highlighted.
There’s a trend in MLS right now to build soccer-specific stadiums in the 20,000 seat range that actually do intrigue me architecturally. As per my earlier comment, I feel like that 20,000 mark is a pretty solid goal for achieving a stadium that is functionally perfect for a fan’s experience, but also architecturally attractive for the exterior and interior.
by Tezcatlipoca on Nov 22, 2011 10:53 AM EST up reply actions
The big problem with the MLS stadiums is that many of them were designed by the same company
so while each one certainly has its unique features, they ended up looking pretty uniform
like...
many of the new baseball stadiums were designed by the same firm that designed opacy. it shows.

I’ve noted that Nationals Stadium is a nice enough place to watch a baseball game, but it’s definitely a bit stale as far as stadium design and has absolutely no relationship with one of the most iconic cities in the world.

I couldn't agree more
I am so disappointed by the stadium. Given the location, they could have made it so nice. All they had to do was… turn it around! Let the outfield open to a water view instead of a view of the parking garage and the metro stop.

There's multiple issues that Nationals Stadium fails on...
1) The facade. Where’s the marble? Where’s any kind of connection to the architecture of Washington? Where’s the neoclassical or the Georgian? Even compared to the other modern buildings in DC, it doesn’t seem to fit.
2) The location. I understand that part of the goal is to revive that area of DC, but the overall urban plan there is horrible. It is just so boxy and bland, without any sense of community (good friends live right next to the stadium).
3) The view. As others have noted, there’s quite a few nice things to look at in DC. However, if you’re standing on home plate, would you know what city you’re in?

I just don't see Hoes as a real COF prospect
As a middle infielder; sure, we can all get behind one of the few guys in the O’s organization who will take a walk. But as a LF/RF? Not a chance. Also, despite decent footspeed, he has not spent so much as a single inning in CF, so I think that’s not a realistic destination either.
That is where I'm at too,
I just don’t see a path to a majors unless he can play second, which apparently he cannot do.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
so...
i know andrew and i have been a few rounds on this type of issue, but is there a chance of hoes fitting into left as a brett gardner type? he doesn’t seem to have the abysmal SLG issues of, say, a kyle hudson or matt angle.

does that rule of thumb about 2.5+ ghz apply regardless of usage? This will be a strictly Word, Excel, Powerpoint, browsing laptop if that matters.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
You'll be fine for those things
I’m not sure the GHz matters too much in this case because this is a value processor. It’s the latest from intel but it’s not the i3/i5/i7 you see advertised on tv, it’s their lower-tier “mobile” processor. So it’s hard to make a judgment on GHz alone.
Yeah I'm with that
RAM allows you to do more stuff at once without bogging down.
GHz makes processes run faster. But I don’t know enough about individual processors to answer.
You can always downgrade Windows 7 to get faster performance too, but I’ve never tried to do that.

The first season was good.
This season was supposed to be all “THE GROUP IS DIVIDED! THERE IS FIGHTING IN THE RANKS!” and it hasn’t been that at all. They are just chilling at a farm house, fucking each other, and generally having a pretty swell time. Oh, and looking for an eight year old girl with AMAZING survival instincts.

I think they're going to get better.
This past episode was pushing some of the more interesting plot points. The adultery has been revealed, there are zombies 100 feet away, and Shane might kill more people.
Yeah that little girl thing is really dragging down the plot
it’ll get more awesome once they get off the farm.

If you're not a zombie fan, I suggest skipping The Walking Dead
I started TWD right after I finished with Breaking Bad, and the difference in quality is staggering. If you’re just looking for top-flight television regardless of genre, TWD isn’t going to be on your list.

Season 3’s lost my interest. I just don’t care about the white City Councilman thinking about being mayor (and yeah, I know he’s a stand-in for MO’M) and the slick African-American councilman doesn’t hold my interest, either. I really liked Generation Kill.
I don’t really know how to describe what’s good about it. It’s not a war epic in the vein of Band of Brothers, and it can’t be, because compared to WW2 there was nothing epic about the invasion of Iraq.
It’s based off of a book of the same name that was written by a Rolling Stone reporter who was embedded with a Marine unit for the invasion. It’s neither preachy anti-war nor rah-rah pro-war. It’s about the Marines who were driving through the desert, occasionally fighting. What do they do when they’re bored? What do they do when they’re tense and expecting an ambush from any direction? What do they do when charging into a fight? David Simon was in charge, so the verisimilitude you’d expect is present. It’s good.

The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret starts in January. The first season was really good if you like David Cross’ style of humor (people who did not like Arrested Development need not apply). Luck with Dustin Hoffman and others debuts for HBO in January. Teams are going to have to give up much, much more
to trade into the top spots this year because of the rookie pay scale. Teams no longer have to be hesitant to trade up and pay a guy $50+ million. That makes the top spots infinitely more valuable and not many teams outside of the top ten will be willing to give up what is required to get the number one pick. Even if it is Andrew Luck.

are the only teams outside of Miami and Washington that I can see trading up for Luck. Every other team has either a legit starter or a recent first round pick at QB. Many of those teams might like to have Luck, but aren’t going to risk giving up a ton to move up. When they already have a quality starter. Also don’t sleep on the fact that plenty of teams will be willing to settle for Landry Jones or Matt Barkley.

I hated cinnamon for a long, long, long time after an unfortunate incident involving baked cinnamon squash. Just the smell of it would make me queasy.
That's exactly it (I love cinnamon btw)
The smell kills me. It stemmed from spending lots of time in the hospital and not being able to eat anything. They’d serve bacon every morning (which, btw, that shit is not bacon. don’t ever trust hospital food) so the whole floor would smell of it. It was horrible.

I did that with bananas and those Valentine's heart candies.
In both situations, when I was a kid, I ate so many that I puked. I still haven’t eaten heart candies since but bananas I picked up again after a 20+ year hiatus. Like everyone on earth, I’ve also had a period of being averse to Tequila after a night I drank too much. That only took 10 years to get over. Thankfully, I did get over it. Terrible teams are going to get penalized for drafting super talents. I don’t get it. Was this a compromise with NYY and BOS for the higher luxury tax?
Mother, did it need to be so high.
That doesn't really say how its going to work
Is it total overall spending? Tax on going overslot on a pick-by-pick basis?
Pick-by-pick
there will be five bands of penalties, starting with a 75 percent tax on the amount 0-5 percent over a specified threshold for each team next year, based on its selection spot.

It just seems like...
… it’s really going to encourage a lot of draftees to play hardball. What I mean is, Player X will be drafted by Team Y, who he doesn’t particularly care about. He’ll demand a contract that would get hit with a draft tax. He’ll then go to school for another year and get drafted by a team who doesn’t care about luxury taxes (AHEM).

Interesting
I wonder if this will gradually lead to an expansion of college baseball until the draft system more closely resembles the NFL. A lot more high school players who could have previously signed overslot deals may now be going to college instead to improve their draft slot.
kba, the consensus seems to be that MLB is going to lose a lot of athletes.
Basically everybody who gets signed away from a football scholarship – Bubba Starling and the like – will now be taking the scholarship and going to play at Nebraska or Oregon or LSU or wherever.

by Astronaut Mike Dexter on Nov 22, 2011 1:45 PM EST up reply actions
No idea.
The football thing is probably a smaller number than players who will just say screw it and go to college. It depends on whether the HS draftees/their parents/agents are willing to take 10% over whatever slot guideline or not.
However, one thing that will also be gone is the thought of a much, much greater payday in three years. Currently, later first round players can think, well, I could be a top talent, but how much more money could they potentially get for moving up now? So I don’t know how it will shake out except that there is less money to go to players and the outside experts seem to think this will negatively affect athletes choosing to play baseball.

I'm not sure how this will really affect two sport athletes.
As far as I understand, if a prep athlete is choosing between MLB and college, they can get a payday right now or go to college to play football for a few more years, hope their talent and health sustains, and then hope for an NFL deal. There is a lot of risk there. If I were a rational actor and felt 50/50 about baseball and football, the guaranteed money would be persuasive and I would probably choose baseball. If I were in college, then I would choose whatever sport gave me the highest payday. I don’t hear about too many college players who are so good at both sports that both an NFL and MLB team are willing to toss out huge contracts on draft day to the same guy. I can’t figure out if the argument about two sport athletes will really make any difference in real life or if its just theoretical.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
I think it means teams with a higher pick will have a higher tax threshold.
But the tax applies to spending across the whole draft. That’s what the national baseball writers (e.g. Keith Law) have been hammering on. Law is not a fan of the draft tax.

Good job baseball. Destroy your ability to get the top flight domestic talents into your ranks, because you’ve arbitrarily set a dollar value on them that is likely going to be significantly lower than what they’re actually worth. After the Verlander Win I am not surprised
I feel like sabermetric statistics are being put in the wrong hands. The writers are morons.
"Grow nothing, buy the 'Pen" (Wieters Weiners)
So just because Braun’s team goes to the playoffs he wins? Give me a break.
"Grow nothing, buy the 'Pen" (Wieters Weiners)
Pretty much.
I think there are some writers who believe value is defined by a thought experiment of “what would happen if I removed player X from the team?” If they believe that a playoff team would not have made the playoffs without player X, then they assign some random value to that fact, usually a large amount of value. It obviously is sufficient to make up for the fact that Kemp out-played Braun in most measurable categories.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
Good explanation
Personally I am torn. Obviously being an O’s fan I hate seeing good players on bad teams not get their due. But on the other hand I wouldn’t want to see Braun get penalized because he plays on the same team as other players who excelled.
At least they didn’t give it to a pitcher.
"Grow nothing, buy the 'Pen" (Wieters Weiners)
I don't think you need to penalize Braun for being on a good team.
He just shouldn’t benefit from it. Baseball is probably the easiest sport to isolate individual performances for evaluation. We know that there are certain stats that are team dependent and certain stats that better measure individual performance. It would seem most logical to me to evaluate a player based on those skills we best know can be attributed to that player. The other stuff seems like noise to me.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
I disagree with this statement
Baseball is probably the easiest sport to isolate individual performances for evaluation.
Sabermetrics try to break down performance in different situations and when a homer is “worth more” in some situations than others. To your statement I think that it is very difficult to analyze who performed better because no two situations are alike. There are always a large amount of variables.
I am glad it isn’t my job to try and vote. That said, I would have went with Kemp.
"Grow nothing, buy the 'Pen" (Wieters Weiners)
Pitchers for sure can be isolated.
but for hitting I think it is extremely difficult. I think basketball stats are very reliable because conditions are so controlled so I would give that sport the edge for evaluation purposes.
"Grow nothing, buy the 'Pen" (Wieters Weiners)
Still far easier than in other sports
how do you isolate the performance of a running back from that of the offensive line? Its even harder in sports where there aren’t discrete plays. How do you can you analyze the performance of a central midfielder in soccer, except in relation to the other 21 guys on the field?
Yea, it would be insane.
Even to validate the running back and QB point, you always here “he is a system guy.”
Soccer is easy…Messi>everyone else.
"Grow nothing, buy the 'Pen" (Wieters Weiners)
People still try, and have some success
baseball just has far more individual data points than any other sport, which makes statistical analysis easier and more useful.
It doesn't sound like you disagree.
I think we agree that baseball is easier than any other professional team sport to isolate individual performance despite the fact that there are a number of variables that make true individual evaluation impossible.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
I know my statements aren't articulated well
I think pitching is pretty easy (except for the AL East) to isolate but I think hitting is far more difficult. I personally think basketball is the easiest.
"Grow nothing, buy the 'Pen" (Wieters Weiners)

Kemp: 19.2 (6 years) yearly WAR between 0.4-8.7 (inconsistent)
OPS+:
Braun: 145
Kemp: 125

I would agree that Braun has had a better, more consistent career to date.
But, since the MVP is given every year, I assume the award should be given to who performed best in that year (otherwise, Pujols would probably be taking home the award with regularity). In 2011, Kemp performed better than Braun according to most measures.

Similar in what way?
Reyes beat Kemp in every measurable offensive category except RBIs and HRs. And did so while sporting a .317 BABIP vs. .361 for Kemp.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
Kemp has a naturally high BABIP
He just hits the ball REALLY hard so it falls more often.
by J(O's)elskIL on Nov 22, 2011 5:02 PM EST up reply actions
I have thought about that
but have never seen data showing speed of the ball off the bat and I’m not really sure where to find that data. I know that BABIP is more consistent year-to-year with batters than pitchers but it also takes multiple seasons of data to figure if high BABIP is a skill or not. Kemp has had BABIP that fluctuates between .295 (2010) and .380 (2011) with numbers in between. Because of the wide fluctuation in BABIP on a yearly basis, not just with Kemp but with all other players included, it is difficult to conclude that high BABIP is mostly skill or mostly luck. It is a frustrating stat in that way, for sure.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
His BABIP in 2010 is an outlier
His other BABIPs:
.411 (partial sesason)
.361
.345
.380 (2011)
This seems to show a consistently very high BABIP

I love that one year isn't enough to say something is good, yet it's always enough to say something is bad.
Kemp’s BABIPs (outside of that one shitty year) have been .361, .345, .380, and like .400+ in his first season (which was partial). Those are consistently high.

I'm not saying something is good or bad
or that Kemp is lucky or unlucky. Just that the more information we have, the more we can know if Kemp has a skill for having more balls drop in for hits. If you look at career BABIP leaders, it is not all power hitters or slap hitters. It’s a mix of all types of players. Jeter, for instance, ranks above Kemp in career BABIP (notorious “Jeter’d” hits). I have no clue if Jeter does that shit on purpose or what.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
Kemp has always had ridiculously high BABIP
That stat sort of annoys me though.

WAR factors in a lot more than offense.
You can’t use WAR to directly draw conclusions about a player’s offensive talent. You have to look at its components. Reyes and Kemp play different positions, have different skillsets, etc.
I don’t think there’s any way to look at his batting numbers overall and say that he was “outstanding” before this year. Good, sure, and even very good in ’07 and ’09. But his offense has definitely been inconsistent:
wRC+: 89, 131, 111, 127, 101, 171
There’s some up-and-down there, so either he’s not consistently reaching his true talent level, or that level is a wRC+ of 115-120 and he’s just oscillating around that. This year makes the latter seem pretty unlikely.
"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver
WAR Comparison
Braun’s 5 years: 1.5, 2.0, 5.9, 4.7, 7.7
Kemp’s 6 years: -0.6, 1.3, 3.0, 5.7, 2.3, 10.0
um yea...those numbers are kinda off

Kemp definitely didn't have 10 WAR this year.
I also don’t think Braun ever hit 5.9…his other “good” season was like 4.9 or something.

It's easier if we distinguish WAR usage
rWAR = Baseball Ref
fWAR = Fangraphs.
makes it simple
Mother, did it need to be so high.
It's no problem.
Just makes it easier for everyone to be on the same page and know which site the numbers are coming from since B-R and FG have different WAR formulas.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
I was nieve enough
to think WAR was a standard formula. I have so much to learn. Sad to admit I’m pretty “old school” when it comes to statistics. Thanks again.
Nothing sad about it.
Old school stats are legit. Newer stats tend to be more accurate to actual contribution and are better for projection.
by J(O's)elskIL on Nov 22, 2011 5:08 PM EST up reply actions
And new stats are just finding better ways
to interpret old stats. The new way of thinking just tends to give less credence to stats that are team dependent, like RBIs and Wins. Hits, Ks, BBs, HRs, SBs, those are still all considered. You will be at home with new stats in no time.

I think that living overseas can be a great experience.
I would strongly suggest:
1) Finish your college degree. You’re not going to get anywhere in Europe as an American without a degree. You need to be employable.
2) Spend a year teaching English in another country. It’s a huge industry in East Asia, but it’s also possible to do in places like Spain and Russia, if you prefer Europe.
3) While you’re overseas teaching, use that time to make connections. Go to consulate events. Meet businesspeople. You might be able to parlay a year of relatively easy work into a career which will include worldwide travel.
I know that Titov has extensive experience overseas, as do I. If you’re serious about wanting to live overseas, I’d be happy to talk with you about my experiences (and I’m certainly not going to judge).

Better just to get the degree and then have the option of floating around for a while.

Not to mention, college is just a flat out great experience to have.
I’m not idealizing it or anything. I had a lot of issues in college. I nearly failed out before getting my act together. I had a hard time making lasting friendships. I was engaged and that ended and devastated me for a long time.
But you’ll learn as much about yourself in college as you will your chosen area of study. I wouldn’t trade my experience, as rough as it was sometimes and as much as I regret some of the things I did and didn’t do, for anything.

One of the reasons the Occupy movement is nowhere near as big as down there is that we don’t have much to complain about right now. No huge bailouts, we already had our healthcare program in place (including longass waiting times, but everyone waits), and our Prime Minister is bland as shit. But um the guy above was right… maybe we should stop this right now before it gets out of hand. Copenhagen was the only place where every single wallet was returned with all the money inside.
Again… maybe we shouldn’t start some debate.

I would like to see more about that study.
Keep in mind where they dropped the wallets as compared to where you would be living. I have no idea what your financial situation is, but you will have to basically go from 100% to about 25% dependent. Are you a citizen of Denmark? Can you become a citizen of Denmark? I assume, because I am an Italian citizen, that you have to be one to get free schooling. That all factors into where you live and therefore what type of people you surround yourself with.
Also this seems to be a very peaceful discussion , an exchange of ideas, no problems.

It is random when you attribute the amount of money in your pocket to a person who has nearly no control over that factor.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
sure but
it’s not random that voters feel differently about money versus rain.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
I think maybe I wasn't clear.
The randomness I’m talking about is choosing President X over incumbent President Y because President Y was president when the economy was in the tank. If people vote for President X because the economy is bad, that, to me, seems about as random a reason to choose a president as it would be to choose it based on rain measurement. I understand that a president has some control over monetary and other regulatory policies that affect the economy (eventually) so it’s not a great comparison but I think you get the point.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
sure, i think we're talking past each other
because we’re making separate points. 1) the president has very limited control over the economy therefore it doesn’t make sense to hold the president responsible. you might as well pick rainfall. i agree. 2) it doesn’t make sense, but that’s the reality of the situation because money, unlike rainfall, actually hits people in a very palpable way.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
The reality of it is what confuses me.
The president is capable of doing a lot of things, most of which do not involve a direct effect on the economy. There are a great many things people can look at to judge the quality of a president but most of the debate I hear regarding presidential quality is about the economy. It’s frustrating to me.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
The president is capable of doing a lot of things, most of which do not involve a direct effect on the economy.

Seriously, Romney isn't even polling at 1.
Of course he will win, but damn. The crazy train has been ahead of Romney in the pools the whole time.

but he's been holding stead the entire time
eventually the Tea Party will tire itself out jumping from fringe candidate to fringe candidate and need a mid-election cycle nap, at which point the rest of the Republican Party will rally around Romney.
Are you saying of course Obama will win?
I think it’s going to be REALLY close if Romney wins the primary unless the economy rebounds.

Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.
Y’all on the right side of the aisle learned that lesson 33 years ago with Reagan. We’re just now catching up. Lee Atwater was a freakin’ genius, as is Karl Rove. There’s no denying the messaging talents of the Republican Party. When Democrats get together and get drunk and bitch about other Dems, we all WISH we had the message discipline Republicans do.

First of all DCO, you are still a kid and though I don’t know for certain, you probably haven’t experienced nearly enough to legitimately be concerned about these elections. Hell, I’m not even 10 years older (almost :( ) than you and I look at life and politics completely different then I did when I was your age. I’ve always been a republican, and you might always be a democrat, but I’m still a lot different now and you probably will be too. Try not to do anything rash, because no matter who is in office no country is ever going to be Utopia. That’s it for my advice.
Secondly, and I’m sorry Stacey, but I AM a ‘’hawk of a patriot" and one thing that I have experienced is some of my friends sacrificing their lives so you can come online and “hate America”. Because of that, I have no problem telling someone who hates this country to go fuck themselves and if that’s how you really feel then go ahead and do so (hate America and fuck yourself). If that isn’t what you meant then I would ask you to please choose your words better next time. See you guys tomorrow.

Or at least, I’m not banning a vet for taking offense to that particular statement.
I would like to point out that DCO did clarify her remarks later down the thread and it doesn’t sound like she’s going to be going around burning flags, so let’s try to all keep getting along.

Regulars have been causing some of the issues Stacey wants to cut out, so... yes.
No one is going to get banned forever for getting in an argument in a thread, but from here on if things cross the line then the parties involved may be put in time out for a day or so. There’s not going to be one law if everyone knows your name and one law if you’re a new person/lurker.

I didn't read this thread because politics bore the crap out of me
So I’m just gonna reply here that people who say they are going to leave the country (or who do leave the country) based on an election, I don’t get that. If you care the much you leave, care that much to stay and fight for your country and what you believe in! If everyone just leaves then what?
Maybe someone already said that, but it’s just so silly to me.
What if Hitler reincarnated wins the presidential election?
I think it would be reasonable to leave then.

If I had reason to literally fear for my life, that would be one thing
No one in the current election makes me fear for my life. I’m not gonna get rounded up and executed no matter who wins.
It's less about my life right now than it is about my future in this country
And what people are willing to do to fuck up that future (EPA being cut, Department of Education being eliminated and my mom being out a job etc. etc.) Call it self-centered if you will, but it’s going to take a while for me to reconcile with the consequences of a president who’s willing to destroy social welfare. To do so, I may need to leave. It’s just too depressing to stay.

It doesn't look good but I'm willing to see how it works for a few drafts before reserving judgment.
It is possible, as one of the commenters points out, that this kind of hard slotting system will ensure that the top players are drafted according to talent and will not fall to NYY, BOS, etc. who can more comfortably deal with high signing demands. If two-sport players turn to football where money is not guaranteed and careers are short, then so be it.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
Isn't it more likely
that the guys who are going to require overslot money fall to the NYY/BOS/Etc because they can afford to pay the bonus and the tax?
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
That's a good point.
It might very well turn out that way and it might not. I’m very interested to see what does happen.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
Well, the tax starts being lost draft picks.
If the rich teams are paying the tax in draft picks, the next year it’d (theoretically) even out.

My heart skipped a few hundred beats when I thought I had lost my grandma's first edition Winnie the Pooh
But thankfully I found it. It’s not in great condition, although I bet if I got it restored it would be worth a considerable sum. I would never do that… and in the process I found my first edition Charlotte’s Web, which belonged to my dad when he was a kid! The books are so fragile but I really want to read them… grrr.
