Amber Theoharis: Wondering how Duquette will approach sticky Roberts situation
"Roberts told me this is the most difficult thing he's ever had to deal with. This, coming from a man who practically had his arm ripped off covering first base in 2005 and had open heart surgery as a 5-year-old boy." Well, that certainly puts his concussions in a new light, doesn't it? Worse than open heart surgery as a kindergartner?

The scouting director and director of baseball operations need to be replaced.
Two of the most important positions in the FO are still open. I don’t know how crucial the scouting director is on a day-to-day basis and it might not be draft season, but scouting FAs and potential trade targets must be taking a hit.

Klentak just left. Give the man some time.
I’m not sure what’s going on with the scouting director.

Also, hoe the hell is Kelly Johnson a type A FA?
Even though those designations are out with the new CBA, WTF?
And why even get into this discussion? We’re rebuilding and at 2B have Roberts (maybe/partially), Antonelli, Adams, and Andino (heh, AAA (also what level they all belong at)).

Kelly Johnson would seem to be a CC-friendly player, no? Decent power; takes his walks… on the right side of 30 (for now…)
All true and valid points and I think he is good (up and down but solid).
I’m just pointing out the futility and waste of signing FAs to multi-year deals (it’ll probably take 3 to get him to come to B-more) especially at a position where we have multiple young players waiting for a chance and no real rush.

Designations?
After this season the designations go away. How is he ranked so high? In part…it does not measure defense.
It changed. No designations anymore.
If you offer a player a high enough contract (this season it’s $12.5 M) and he refuses and signs somewhere else, you get compensation.

I like #5 on that list
5.The trade market for elite free agents shifts – “Only players who have been with their clubs for the entire season will be subject to compensation,” according to the CBA. In other words, teams won’t be compensated for losing players acquired in midseason trades.

Yeah, there are some good points in the CBA but I want to see a draft/signing

I think it's really gonna hurt TOR and TB
Not being able to pay overslot $$$ as easily and the limitations on compensation picks just makes things easier for NYY & BOS, which seems to be the whole point of this agreement. Lost your last series to miss the playoffs? Well, here’s an extra spot! Prize draftees not falling to you because other clubs actually write big checks? Make ‘em stop! Hurting your draft position with those expensive free agent signinhgs? Poof! They’re gone!
If BOS & NYY don’t make the playoffs EVERY year under this system, whomever the team’s manager is that year should automatically be fired. MLB is really titling the playing field toward those two teams more and more every year.

A good point has been made about the Law of Unintended Consequences.
You can’t positively predict how these rule changes will affect the market. But yeah, Steinbrenner and Lucchino couldn’t have written it better.
Another interseting point was made on Over the Monster (BTW I can’t remove it from the “My Blogs” tab). The fact that both WC teams play a one game play-in gives both a severe disadvantage while giving the division winning team with the best record a big advantage.

it hurts Boston a lot, too
So much of their success is about their player development machine which starts with their drafts, which seem to be pretty good every year.

And now they will NOT be losing picks when they sign FAs - so more picks stay with BOS

There would be weasel language about “well, technically, if amortized over the life of the contract and expected rates of inflation, the actual economic impact of the contract does fall just below the thresholds demonstrated in the labor agreement at this time….”
I do not believe Bud Selig will ever take any meaningful action against those two clubs that would impact their performance. I just don’t. That would require a spine, and he doesn’t have one.

Not so sure about that
Selig sure will bring the shit hammer down on anyone who doesn’t share his antiquated view of the farce known as the all star game as the most important thing in the history of… history itself.
You watch. Anyone, even from NYY or Bos, who’s picked for the game, healthy enough to go & stays home will be suspended for the entire 2nd half.

I believe they will
exceed your given bonus allotment by more than 5% and you lose your first rounder in the next draft. Go higher than 10% and you lose more draft picks. even just going over by 1% and you’re hit with a pretty aggressive tax.

I know what the contract says
I just don’t trust Bud Selig to actually enforce it against NYY and BOS. Would he take a pick from us or PIT or even TB? Sure. But BOS and NYY? All of a sudden, there’s mitigating factors, contract language that juuuuuust skirts the level of taking a pick, you name it.
"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King
Add up the dollar signs, apply penalty if necessary.
There’s not much to screw around with there, unless you think there will start being under the table payments to the draftees. I don’t think teams would take chances on that kind of stuff.

where there was a luxury tax that only ever affected NYY, BOS, and PHI that he didn’t go and collect it. And – it isn’t like when Boston signed a Type A like Jon Lackey Bud called up the Angels and told them sorry but I’m not taking the pick away from Boston.
I'll develop my own image. I'm an original man. A one and only. I just need some help.
75% tax. It's crazy.
In a practical sense, it’s hard-slotting. Unless there is a super-prospect there’s no way anyone goes over.

Not sure about the hard slotting
Let’s say the Orioles draft budget for their first 10 picks is $10M. So, up to the 5% where there is only a monetary penalty, the 10 picks the Orioles receive need to be signed for $10.5M. I would bet the Orioles draft 2 or 3 tough signs with the intention of signing only 1 or 2 of them.
It can’t be gamed as much as it used to, but I’m sure it can be gamed in some ways.
BTW, does anyone know if there is compensation for not signing a draft pick like there is currently?
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
I think I'm thinking out loud,
Let’s say Bryce Harper is there for the taking in 2012. The #1 pick is slotted for $6M but he swears he will go to USC if he doesn’t get $8M. The second round pick is slotted for $1M. Do you pick Harper and someone you don’t expect to sign with #2 pick so you can allocate more money for Harper?
I don’t think that will happen, frankly. But I’m just trying to see where the opportunities are. I think it’s the amateurs who really lose out here. I would also venture a guess that accurately ranking amateurs is more important than ever.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
I think thats possible
but if you do that, then you’re voluntarily forfeiting the #2 pick to go overslot on Harper rather than signing both and taking the CBA penalty. Either way, the new rules have greatly limited your ability to build through the draft.
Why would MLB want to do that?
I don’t understand MLB’s rush to kill the effectiveness of the draft – if you want competitive balance, this is one of the ways smart clubs can get better. Now, there’s even more of an advantage to being a big market club, because you can write the $100M checks others can’t, but the small market club doesn’t get to write a $6M check for a draftee to make them better. Ridiculous.
Would we have even been able to draft & sign Manny Machado, Matt Wieters and Dylan Bundy under these rules? Manny & Dylan had the option to go back to school to improve draft status, and I doubt Matt would have fell to us.
So life just got harder for the AL East’s worst front office. Ugh.
"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King
Well, the idea is to keep players like Wieters from falling...
…although this hasn’t been a problem for several years.
Ultimately, this could result in more drafts like the Hobgood draft, where teams go cheap at the top of the draft to keep more money available later in the draft. But the issues with the draft are also a result of how the CBA is negotiated – between current players and ownership, with amateurs and their interests not represented. Player reps like Jeff Francouer are not going to act in the best interests of amateurs who aren’t part of the union, and ownership is going to take whatever they can.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
What I was trying to ask was...
don’t players use amateurs as a negotiating tool? Maybe leverage wasn’t the right word, but I thought that was what happened with this CBA.
Focus on defense, that's where this team can easily improve
Andino at 2b and Antonelli at 3b for their fielding. Roberts probably won’t ever be back because he has no incentive to risk his health doing so. Much easier to stay home and count the millions as they flow in.
"The key to winning baseball games is pitching, fundamentals, and three-run homers."
Even though the O's REALLY need to upgrade their infield defense, there are only 3 GB heavy
pitchers on the team (Britton, JJ and Strop (SSS)) that would neccesitate sacrificing defense for batting. I don’t think the tradeoff is worth it.

OK, maybe I'm forgetting some pertinent stats...
but why don’t we start the year with Andino at 2nd?
His bat doesn’t play at 3B or OF, yet it’s OK at 2B. He was 19th among MLB 2B with at least 300 ABs in OBP last year. Sure it’s not great. but is it worth paying over $10/3 years to fix? Maybe the stats say otherwise, but I don’t remember his defense being horrible at 2B. His Rtot at B-R.com was a +2 and his Rdrs was even. I’m no stat-head, but I would think that shows he wasn’t giving away runs at 2B.
It seems to me we have a perfectly serviceable solution for BRob at 2B right on our roster in Robert Andino.
"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King
What happened to Ryan Adams?
Andino’s future is as a good utility guy (and Roch constantly says that Buck sees him as such), I think Adams or Antonelli deserve the chance to start in the likely case that Roberts won’t be fully capable.

I guess I'm thinking we know what we have in Andino
We THINK Antonelli may be as good as Andino. We THINk Ryan Adams could be as good as Andino. But we have a fairly good idea of what Andino can do, and it’s servicable at the MLB level. Why look for a solution to this problem when there are so many other pressing needs?
Robert Andino was a servicable relacment level player, maybe a little better. And I’m scared to death we’ll trot someone out there for MILLIONS more dollars that we sign that won’t even produce that well. I don’t think Ryan Adams will produce even as much as Andino and Antonelli should be the utility guy. Becaused let’s face it, any innings we get out of BRob this year will be a bonus. I’ve fully accepted the fact we will never see him as a starter for the O’s again, aside from MAYBE a few weeks at the beginning of this year again.

I hope you didn’t mean it as snarky as it read. Because if there’s one area you can’t criticize Brian Roberts, it’s his desire to play. Have you read about his symptoms? “We did have Vlad Guerrero last year. I’d much rather sign those Dominicans for contracts when they are coming out of the amateur market rather than pay them a lot of money in the big leagues. We have to sign a few more of those before we look to a high-priced DH, I think.”

Voice of the marketplace
The marketplace has delivered its verdict on the Orioles and the franchise’s future. Like rats fleeing the sinking ship, Jordan and Klentak left for jobs at the same level with new clubs. In Klentak’s case, his new club is headed by a GM who is young, meaning that he cannot inherit the top job as he might have in Baltimore. Klentak’s move had “let me out” written all over it. The pathetic GM search produced a candidate who was desparate enough to take the job.
The Os have two blue chip prospects in the minor leagues. Even if the team buys a few high priced free agents, the Os will be in the cellar for years to come given the stockpile of prospects possessed by the other AL East teams. I was optimistic when AM signed four years ago. No longer.

We Feed the World. Worst new Russian word of the week: Н А Г Е Т Ы [NAGETY – pr. NAH.get.y]
As I’m pounding the treadmill at my feetness kloop, er, fitness club, this ad comes on the big screen TV: An attractive Russian mother removes a tray of small, light brown, doughy-looking something-or-others from her oven and proceeds to dip one of them into a small container of sauce.
She then bites into it, revealing some sort of light-colored meat inside. Then we see the package, with the brand name in large letters followed by НАГЕТЫ underneath. Aha: Russia’s generic Chicken McNuggets have arrived— without the Mc, of course.
What would this country be without us? Well, healthier is a good guess.
We still suck, but on Sept. 29, 2011, we did a Very Cool Thing. Yeah, we did that.
Have the Russians lifted their imported poultry ban?
Y’all were KILLING Perdue with that. Where else are they gonna dump their dark meat parts than Eastern Europe? Seriously, it was quite the lucrative market in the 90s for American chicken companies.

Jeez, I thought that was LONG gone

Putin, I mean, whomever is the titular head of the Russian government
brings it back every now and then.
And I’m loving the clip of Putin getting booed at last week’s PPV MMA fight and his people spinning it that the crowd was booing the American that Fedor Emelianenko had just beaten. And dozens of Russians jumped on Twitter and YouTube to say, “No, we were booing Putin.”
"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King
Yeah, that was pretty cool at the no-rules thing
And political life is so stultified here that half the media spent a week “interpreting” the booing.
FWIW, a trainer guy at my feetness kloop said Oh yeah, they were DEF booing Putin all right— because his security people had locked down all the entrances/exits for sth over 2 hrs and fans who’d been drinking beer (etc.) through the whole event couldn’t leave after it was over to take a leak as long as Putin was still there haranguing the crowd.

No rules thing?
Dude. there are LOTS of rules in MMA. Lots.

Hey, beats me (so to speak) -- but it's called No-rules Fighting in Russian (бой без правил)
We still suck, but on Sept. 29, 2011, we did a Very Cool Thing. Yeah, we did that.
That's really odd
because the M-1 promotion follows the Unified Rules.
Now there’s a crooked company if I’ve ever seen one. M-1 and its head are something else….
"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King
I dunno, maybe the Russ name is s'posed to suggest to peeps here No Marquis of Queensbury-type rules
If I remember I’ll axe the trainer guy at my club what he thinks of the fact that people elsewhere don’t call it that — ‘cause there’s like a million rules.

Sickels put up his annual O’s prospect rankings.
The four through seven guys received better grades than I expected not that a B- is something to get super excited about. But there’s hope!
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
this is close to my assessment
This isn’t a great system and there is a distinct lack of star potential once you get past the top three, but it is NOT empty and progress has been made in recent years. There is good depth in Grade B-/C+ types, and some of them (and some of the Grade Cs) are young and/or projectable enough to rank higher next year with proper development.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
I haven't paid enough attention to Esposito, Bundy Sr., Klein, and Delmonico.
But I will now. I’ve never heard of Parker Bridwell or Glynn Davis, but they could turn interesting very fast. Same with Baker.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
Delmonico could be something
My BiL & SiL live in Knoxville, and the kid’s supposed to be legit.

Delmonico's defense is still raw at 3B
Glynn “cold front” Davis ( throwback nickname)
“Skanky” Hoes
Trent “I want my” Mummey
And of course Sebastian “Darth” Vader
Headline writers have their fingers crossed that these guys make the majors.

another bird dropping
Fangraphs on Matt Antonelli.
Dan Duquette’s first real move at the helm of the Orioles was a little interesting, not because of the player but because of the contract terms. That’s not to say it was a bad move, just a curious one. Antonelli is exactly the kind of player a non-contender should take a flier on, a middle infielder with a knack for working the count and putting the ball in play. It doesn’t take much for a guy with that skill set to be worth two wins, but Antonelli’s got a lot to prove first. The O’s clearly think he’s worth the risk given the investment they’ve already made in him.
I like this signing.

Don't know if it was posted
but have you guys seen this ? Thanksgiving related. Not NSFW at all either.

we'll see.
I'd put it this way; if an offense is a sugar cookie, on base percentage is the pastry part of the cookie, power is the icing, and baserunning is like the jimmies that they sprinkle onto the icing. - Bill James

He's formerly the Toronto Blue Jays professional scouting crosschecker
"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King
A quick search of the internet reveals next to nothing on this guy,
I even went to the Blue Jays website and searched for Rajsich, but there were no hits. Of course, I can’t say I know who the Orioles crosschecker is either. I do know of the award winning Dean Albany though.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
I don't even know what a cross-checker is.

It's a penalty in lacrosse
Oh wait, that’s the guy. The penalty is cross checking.

'Course, this doof could also be called for checking from behind. Typical of a bad DEF badly beaten
