Oh boy
He looks like a ballplayer. He’s got a good look about him, and he’s a former No. 1 pick. To me, that identifies his ability, right?
Please tell me he’s just blowing smoke up somebody’s butt here. If he looks like a ballplayer (whatever that means) and somebody else picked him in the first round, then he must be our guy? Ugh.

This is depressing
I don’t think I could knock the dirt out of my spikes without hurting myself. At least I can’t with my golf clubs. And I don’t see myself constantly readjusting my gloves after every pitch. And any time I try to flip down the sunglasses, I poke myself in the eye.
Shit, I really don’t have a shot, do I?

It seems somewhat clear to me
that the national news outlets are just going to stick all former Red Sox with the Orioles in rumors because Duquette used to work for them. Maybe that’s completely accurate, and maybe it’s a little bit lazy, and maybe a little of column A and a little of column B.
In other news, the search for the backup catcher is almost as boring as the search for the bullpen coach.

Why stop with someone who might be in the Hall of Fame when you can get someone already in it. He’s got huge name recognition, too, and he’s only 64. He might have lost a little bat speed and maybe a step or two, though.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
that was sort of my thought...
though i have to imagine that duquette contacting agents of guys that were on his era of the red sox is part of reconnecting to the league and doing his due diligence.

There are a lot of boring things about the offseason.
The media talking about every little possible signing or signing as if it matters in the slightest has got to be one of the worst of them. If I see another writer talking about minor league free agents, I might go insane.

It's interesting to me
that the Orioles shopping list includes an outfielder. What does that mean for: Angle, Reimold, Scott?
I'll develop my own image. I'm an original man. A one and only. I just need some help.
what does it mean...
for markakis!
markakis for dunn.

"Three thousand years of beautiful tradition, from Moses to Sandy Koufax,YOU'RE GODDAMN RIGHT I'M LIVING IN THE FUCKING PAST!"- Walter Sobchak
that's interesting
Nick has $44 million left on his deal (through 2014, with a club option for 2015 at the seemingly-ridic level of an extra 15.5). I wonder what would be realistic to see come back, besides the salary relief.
I'll develop my own image. I'm an original man. A one and only. I just need some help.
you know
even if Markakis were performing at a high enough level to justify the money he’s earning, and the team was still miserable, trading him would still be a salary relief thing. A bad team just cannot hold onto players with contracts in the top 50 of all highest paying contracts. It’s hamstringing.
I'll develop my own image. I'm an original man. A one and only. I just need some help.
Yeah I understand.
It’s just that the blind optimism I felt when he was extended is tough to shake off.
Ehhhhh
I don’t think markakis’ contract is or will prevent the O’s from doing anything. That’s one of the few advantages the O’s have over most bad teams – money is not an issue. Eating salary to acquire talent is exactly what they should be doing. If they shed SOME payroll along the way great.

Sure
but it’s not hamstringing. They are not, nor will they be, not making any moves because of Markakis’ contract other than if they include signing a better right fielder.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
on some level it must hamstring them, though
just because the budget is that much smaller. And of course none of us know at all to what degree that contract is a problem to the budget, which is going to make this conversation sort of pointless.
Also pointless: the Orioles aren’t going to eat a significant amount of that $44 million and get more players in return. It just doesn’t happen. I don’t even think the commish would approve sending money that would cover costs after 2012, when there’s still $32 million sitting on it.
And if I’m the acquiring team, someone who is looking to upgrade in the outfield to make a move (maybe like San Fran or Atlanta), to me the larger cost is the strong talent going to Baltimore, not the money being spent. There’s no way I accept money in exchange for blue chip prospects in that deal.
I'll develop my own image. I'm an original man. A one and only. I just need some help.
But they have shown that they'll throw huge contracts at guys
even with that contract.
And luckily lots of other GMs are not as smart as you. I didn’t say anything about getting “more players” – just getting a good player that they wouldn’t give up while having to take on his whole salary. That happens all the time.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
okay
I don’t agree that I’m smarter than any GM (not even GMDM or Andy MacPhail), and I certainly have taken fewer business classes than most people sitting in front offices right now. Which probably puts me below a lot of people on this board, too, when it comes to talking about business options.
But I think very strongly that while the O’s could eat some of the contract, and that would have some effect on the talent coming back to Baltimore, it will be a marginal gain as compared to what Markakis and his contract would fetch without cash thrown in, and I don’t think “well throw enough money at them to make it non-marginal” is a realistic option for the reasons I stated above (I don’t think MLB would go along, and I don’t think the acquiring team would go along).
I'll develop my own image. I'm an original man. A one and only. I just need some help.
I don't know what you mean about the other team or MLB not going along
teams improve trade returns all the time by eating contract dollars.
And I know we’ve had a chat about this before, but I personally think the O’s need to be pursuing every single potential improvement no matter how marginal it is.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
What I mean
Let’s just say, hypothetically, that the Atlanta Braves were willing to trade, with no cash attached at all, two of their top 10 prospects, but nobody in the top 5 (just as a hypothetical). If the Orioles threw in a ridiculous amount like $10 million, I don’t think the Braves are going to then agree to replace one of those good but not great prospects with Arodys Vizcaino. Because if I’m the Braves, I’d rather spend $10 million extra to keep Vizcaino because he represents so much extra value than $10 million.
Obviously the take would be a lot better for Baltimore with the cash thrown in, but there’s a friction point after which they’re just throwing more cash than they’re getting back in the deal.
I'll develop my own image. I'm an original man. A one and only. I just need some help.
It's totally dependent on the situation the trade partner is in
Maybe that would be the case for the Braves, but maybe that wouldn’t be the case for the Marlins.
I’m not saying that if the O’s offer to eat a bug chunk of the contract it will automatically result in some massive trade upgrade, but it’s an option and it MIGHT do just that.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Maybe it would have worked with the Dodgers in the McCourt era

And
obviously I was talking in jest about you being smarter than GMs (although you might be selling yourself short), but they certainly make trades all the time in which they give up more talent than they would have otherwise in exchange for less contract.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
How is Angelos gonna scare away good GM options by not letting them have control
And then let DD trade away one of his favorite players?

Is there any way I can get random replies to other people to show up in my timeline? I like seeing the random people that baseball writers choose to engage. If they ever reply to me it shows up, but otherwise I have to click on each individual person’s profile to see the random replies.
I didn’t see a setting for this anywhere.

I want a chromebook.
but they’re way too expensive for being basically a tablet with a keyboard. Who wants to give me one?
Chrome and web apps and all that.
Pretty much the same thing as a tablet. Just too expensive for what it is.
not the same thing as a tablet
android tablets have far and away more functionality that a chromebook. Almost all of the “web apps” are just bookmarks. Here’s the Angry Birds web app – works just fine in Firefox. Probably works pretty well in the browser on an Android tablet, too.
Right. It just runs chrome.
But the chromebook can theoretically do pretty much anything a tablet can do, but has a keyboard.
It can do everything a tablet browser can do
it can’t run apps from the Android market, can’t multi-task those apps. Nowhere near the functionality of a tablet.
There are lots of chrome apps. And in terms of functionality, maybe it doesn't have every game
but it can do documents, videos, email, video chat, and all that kind of stuff. Do you have a specific example of a big feature that a tablet could do, that the chromebook couldnt?
I guess I can't
I’ve searched around the chrome web app store and there does appear to be a lot of stuff there, although not all of it is well reviewed. Chatting on IRC, for instance, is possible but there doesn’t seem to be a very good option for ChromeOS. Most offerings have major issues, ie can’t multitask, etc. So while it looks like you can do a lot with ChromeOS, maybe you can’t do those things very well.
Basically, I’d much rather buy a cheap Win7 netbook and install chrome + mIRC. Seems like it would be a much more satisfying experience than trying to do the same on a Chromebook.
Agree 100%. That's exactly why I don't think it's worth $300.
I want one, but I would only be willing to pay maybe $150 at the most for what could be a limited experience.
are there really...
tablets under $300 w/ decent processors?

You can get refurbished ones pretty cheap...
but you’re right the processor on those is way better than most tablets at that price point. But you can definitely find netbooks that are very similar, and theoretically do more than the chromebook can.

I wouldn’t mind the Teagarden signing. He was fairly well thought of in prospect circles, iirc, and might have a small amount of upside.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
that was my thought about teagarden...
and that makes sense w/ mathis given conger and bobby wilson.
teagarden looks solid defensively, has an AAA OPS of .805 in 110 games and, most importantly, is a ranger!

For example, every player is provided with a “rally girl” to get you ready for game days. Think “Bull Durham”. And now, I’d like to introduce you to your rally girl…

KLaw stuff today:
Posted his “top 50 players 25 and under” list today; players must also have lost their rookie status. Britton was the only O on it. Wieters was just a little too old because of the age cutoff (born 1 July 1986 or later):
Shoshana (Boston): Hey for those of us who actually read the qualifying criteria ahead of time, where would Weiters have ranked if he was 6 weeks younger?Klaw (1:23 PM): Top 10.More stuff:
mac (md): Am I wrong or should everything Dan Duquette has said and done since getting hired absolutely terrify O’s fans? Not that it can get much worse… I guess.Klaw (2:00 PM): I think the fact that his first moves included putting Matt Antonelli on the 40-man roster and trying to sign a Korean sidearmer with a bad knee throwing 78-82 should probably concern you.
Joe (Chicago): Orioles just traded for Tayler Teagarden. Good fit for them?Klaw (2:15 PM): Backup catcher. Can’t hold up catching everyday. But they have a decent everyday catcher so … really, it’s a backup catcher, I can’t get excited.
"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver
One more:
Jeff (Baltimore): I’ve heard mixed things about Nick Delmonico. What are your thoughts on him?
Klaw (2:23 PM): Love the bat and the feel for the game. Needs a set position, probably 3b, and needs to stay healthy.
"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver
didn't know chong had a bad knee.
but he might not sign anyways. and who cares about back up catcher.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
I don't understand the problem with DD's first moves.
The Matt Antonelli signing seems completely in line with what we should be doing. And branching out more into the international market is also very welcome. He has consistently stated that he is not looking for a big name free agent signing and that David Ortiz is not on the radar. These are all things I see as positive. It’s also still early in the offseason. I’m curious what KLaw thinks DD should have done by now.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
If Keith Law says something positive, his editors give him a good kick in the nuts.
Tommy hunter still sucks!
Law has already said that whoever takes the job is worthless,
so the odds of Law ever admitting anything Duquette does as positive is slim to none. Law seems a bit on the stubborn side…
