Report: Orioles to sign OF Endy Chavez
From MLB Trade Rumors
The Orioles and Endy Chavez have agreed to a contract, pending a physical, agent Peter Greenberg told Alexis Espejo L. of Lider en Deportes (Spanish link). The report did not include terms of the contract.
Chavez will be 34 years old next season and will, I assume, serve as the fourth outfielder for the Orioles in 2012. That would mean that barring other moves, the Orioles plan on playing Nolan Reimold in left field, which of course is fine with me.
In ten seasons, Chavez has a hitting line of .274/.313/.373. Last year he amassed 274 plate appearances for the Texas Rangers. Wait...the Texas Rangers? I think this will bring the total of ex-Rangers on the Orioles to 4,234.
It's hard to get worked up over this transaction in either direction. It's just another forty-degree day, pretty much.

He used to be a helluva a glove man.
Not sure if that’s the case anymore as he hasn’t played much.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
Oh no, it's still true.
I got lost in looking at the advanced fielding statistics of Chavez vs. Jones and Markakis. Bottom line: He saves a lot of runs. He doesn’t have incredible range, but he makes up for it with his arm and consistency.

Chavez is a good player to have, especially on the bench.
He’s an excellent fielder who can run and even hit a little. Better than most bench players out there. This is something I’d think O’s fans can get a little excited about.
I'm confused. Why is SandalsNoPants still posting?
shouldnt he have been banned by now?

When HASN'T an ex-rangers outfielder on the wrong side of thirty worked out well for us?
Oh wait…

Say a prayer for Matt Angle
Not sure why I would use a roster spot on a redundant 4th OF, but whatever. This guy has crazy range, at least that’s what my eyes told me.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
MlbTradeRumors Has It As A 1 Year Deal
Chavez Is definitely more competent than Felix Pie, if less adorable. And I certainly hope this means Reimold will be the starter in LF.
My only concern (and it’s minor) is that this means less playing time for Matt Angle. Even if you aren’t a huge Angle fan like me, why not give him a chance to prove he can be the team’s 4th outfielder for the next few years? I say let the kids play.
Also, it seems DD is content to make minor bench-filling moves this offseason as he evaluates the current roster. Maybe I’m rushing to judgment, but most of his moves appear similar thus far. We’ll see, but I’m not expecting DD to make a move that has long term ramifications beyond the next season or two-at least not this offseason.

You're probably right about the lack of long-term moves,
but keep in mind that all of Duquette’s moves have been very low-risk. I’ve gotta say that I’ve liked most of his moves.
301
If he hits .301 again..plays all over the OF….and plays it well….I’ll take those numbers next year as our 4th OF….that is a heck of a lot better than the young OF guys that played for the O’s last year ….not a Fielder signing but goof 4th OF guy for sure.
.301 with 5 homers....
Sounds like he should bat clean up the entire season. In actuality I really like this signing and find it refreshing that suddenly the international market and actual statistics are being utilized in picking up players. Now if only our manager could use statistics in setting a line-up once in awhile.
Britt says the org envisions a platoon.
Dan C says it’s $1.5M with a potential $500k in performance bonuses.
If Chavez is taking time from Nolan, I’ll be freaking out about it all season. For now, whatever.

....ok
Reimold, career OPS vs. LHP: .757
Chavez, career OPS vs. LHP: .691
Your cannonball trajectory, it always gave me hope
What's your point?
You are agreeing with him (as do I)
I'd put it this way; if an offense is a sugar cookie, on base percentage is the pastry part of the cookie, power is the icing, and baserunning is like the jimmies that they sprinkle onto the icing. - Bill James

I'm disagreeing with the organization's apparent preference
Your cannonball trajectory, it always gave me hope
Ah, OK that makes more sense.
I thought that was in reply to EME’s sentiment, not the O’s. I just hope that Chavez will be the 4th OF in the fullest meaning of the term.

Doesn't Chavez have better defense than Riemold?
If his range is much better that could make up for the slight different in OPS vs left handed pitching.
His Range Isn't The Thing
I’ve been ranting about his RDRS (Defensive Runs Saved Beyond Average over 1,200 innings) which is substantially higher than Jonesy and Markakis.
You can read more in my most recent article, but rest assured that we have a fantastic defensive player waiting to fill in where needed.
Oh, and I’m with the rest of you. I like Reimold as the starter, and would like to see some more of the speedy Angle, especially if his OBP gets better.

Defense? Oh Yeah, but it's not just the range...

Dude
Chill with the “You can read more in my most recent article” and “check out my latest blog entry” comments. Once in a while is fine, but all 4 of your posts today contained specific mentions of your blog which sure seems like spamming to me.

Point Taken. I Will Chill.
And I’ll also blog about this as soon as I can. (Sorry, bad joke).

it makes trading Adam Jones possible
I don’t know how likely that is, but having a bona fide major-league CF means that the O’s can deal Jones and still field a team.
I stole it from someone
I mean, other than Stringer Bell :) Someone a few days ago said that so far Duquette’s transasctions have been like 40-degree days. I thought it was brilliant.
The way this offseason is going
we should probably replace Alex Trebek telling us so pretty soon with something regarding 40 degree days.
Robert Andino, let me buy you a beer.
