Dan Duquette--Syd Thrift Redux
The contours of Duquette's approach is starting to remind me of Syd Thrift in a big way. What a pity. Dana Eveland, Teagarden, Flaherty, Matt Antonelli, maybe a 33 year-old Korean we've never heard of--maybe not. Did you know Eveland once pitched 168 innings about 4 years ago? Yeah -- and his walk ratio was abysmal that year, just like the rest of his years. Meanwhile, one of the more interesting minor leaguers, admittedly a long shot, Greg Miclat, just got traded to Texas as the PTBNL.

Not unless...
He hit the bar across the street from the factory when it opened at 6:00 a.m. and did two rounds of boilermakers before punching the time clock. People are liable to say most anything then.
Oh, wait, you meant in Duquette’s tenure…sorry.
You do realize Eveland pitched 180+ innings this past year, right?
Or do you not think AAA innings count for wear and tear on the arm?
His WHIP for 2011 was 1.36. Yeah, most of that is from AAA, but he was also pitching in Albuquerque, which is like pitching in Colorado—high altitude, homer-friendly park. Despite that disadvantage he only gave up a home run every 14 innings there.
I’m not saying he’s the second coming of Mike Flanagan, but the dude is a lefty, and those numbers, if replicated this year, would outclass nearly everyone on our staff. He’s certainly a chance worth taking.
"End of season like this, to make Boston go home sad, crying, I’ll take it all day."—Robert Andino
Thrift really liked signing old and crappy vets. Sometimes to multiple years (David Segui).
So far I have not seen the same from DD.

But Amigo
Hey, but step back and look what you are saying: 28 year old’s pitching numbers in AAA were really impressive at a tough farm system ballpark….

Not sure how Duquette is akin to Thriftie?
Thriftie completely mismanaged the first rebuild at the 2000 trading deadline, I’m not sure if this what you are getting at? While Duquette’s acquisitions seem pretty meaningless, I think from his perspective he sees:
- Matt Antonelli as a relatively buy low guy. Per his blog, a few other teams wanted him, but I think the 40 man spot is what did it for the Orioles. So it seems like he was wanted by others.
- Teagarden isn’t as useless as most backup catchers
- Eveland is a guy who pitched well in a tough environment and gets a lot of grounders. Would you prefer seeing Jo-Jo Reyes in the rotation or Dana Eveland?
- Matt Flaherty seems extraneous to me because he seems a lot like Matt Antonelli. Of course, maybe only 2 of Andino, Antonelli and Flaherty are brought north next spring.
In sum, these are all minor moves, but it’s not as if Duquette is pretending they are anything more than that.
Should the Orioles be trying to make major moves? Sure, but I think 2 months is too soon to compare him to Thrift or any of his predecessors. I mean, if I had to bet, I would think he will fail, but we won’t know for 2 years.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
