Agreed...

The original sections built in the late-1960’s and very early 1970’s have a very nice design to them… far better than more modern suburban urban planning.

This looks like fun

I haven’t really posted much here – I’m usually on True Blue LA – but thought I’d share a few.

This is the first play of the game on July 3, 2011 in Atlanta. The umpire got the call right – Hardy was safe at first. I only wish autofocus got it right…

Here JJ Hardy stands, holding the ball, waiting to tag Brian McCann, who is leaping do his own doom, or at least being out.

Ok, now some non-baseball stuff.

I grew up in the Richmond area, and seeing this house is an annual tradition. The family had done this for years, and their son moved into the house next door (row of purple trim on top) to continue the tradition and help with the other house. The son faced foreclosure on his house last year and asked for donations, and apparently they helped and he was able to get back on his feet because they’re still going. This picture was taken last year.

Finally this one is from about 1:00am on May 2nd, just outside the White House. My wife and I decided to see the crowds after they announced the death of Bin Laden.

Photo pros

I’m trying to get the wife a lens or two to go with her rebel t1i for Christmas. I’ve read that this one is a must-have:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/12142-USA/Canon_2514A002_Normal_EF_50mm_f_1_8.html

Any other suggestions? Also any DC area stores you guys recommend or should I just order online?

by O'sFan21 on Dec 12, 2011 12:03 PM EST reply actions

Ooh I got this.

I’m not sure what your budget is or what your desires are, but I can give a few recommendations. That lens is great to start out with, for practicing with a fast aperture lens. Anything else that you will want will probably be much more expensive.

This was my first real lens, and it’s about as cheap as you can go to get top-notch quality. There are some cheaper versions that go a little longer than that but they won’t be as nice.

Another nice option would be something like this. A super wide angle lens like that can be difficult to use though.

You could also get a fast regular lens like this which would basically duplicate the range of the kit lens but give you a good bit more viability in low light.

Tommy hunter still sucks!

by Steve. on Dec 12, 2011 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

Would you bother buying any of these used?

I see B&H has a pretty big used selection of lenses.

Is there any particular kind of photography she enjoys?

Nature, people, sports, etc.? That would make a difference in what kind of lens. I personally tend to prefer a decent zoom rather than a fixed focal length for a “walking around” lens.

And I also have always had good luck with B&H. I’ve never bought used from them, but I think that would be OK if it was significantly cheaper.

fwiw, when I was shopping for cameras and asking for help from my photog friends,

this lens was recommended as the 2nd lens to get for a canon dslr:

canon 55-300mm

and the lens you already listed was said to be a good 3rd lens.

The advantage of a prime lens is that it allows you to shoot low-light or indoors without needing a flash or higher shutter speeds. Don’t know if you have kids, but I know my brother uses one almost exclusively for taking pictures of his 2 year old daughter.

Of course, it depends on what she already has. If she already has a telephoto lens, get her a prime lens. If she already has a prime lens, get her a telephoto. If she has neither, get her either one. If she already has both, get her something fun like a wideangle.

by brek on Dec 12, 2011 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

Ok I'm confused

which of those is a “prime lens”? The one she has says EFS 18-55 mm on it – does that tell you anything meaningful? lol I’m totally ignorant here.

I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8

by O'sFan21 on Dec 12, 2011 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

a prime lens doesn't zoom.

the 18-55 lens is probably what came with the camera (also called a “kit” lens, because it came as part of a kit). It’s the only one I have right now, but is a pretty good all-around lens. The next one I get will probably be a 70-300 in the $150-200 range because I mostly like shooting landscapes and surf, followed by a prime lens later this year.

A prime would probably be good for shooting dogs because it allows you to use a faster shutter speed to get a picture (dogs don’t always cooperate and pose for you).

by brek on Dec 12, 2011 11:52 PM EST up reply actions

bear in mind...

98% of the information i have comes from the fact that I’ve been researching cameras for a month and have been using a real camera for about a week. I am very deliberate about things I purchase, but am by no means an authority on photography.

by brek on Dec 12, 2011 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

well your advice seems to mesh with what I've been reading too

so it seems like you know your shit.

I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8

by O'sFan21 on Dec 13, 2011 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

brek is on the right track

70-300 is a nice range to complement the 18-55. As she shoots more, she’ll start to figure out what ranges she generally uses, and go from there. If there is somewhere nearby that offers courses in photography, that’s another good way to improve what you do (I’m in upstate NY, so can’t offer any good advice about where to look for that). There are also lots of websites to post questions and photos and get a lot of helpful feedback. I post at a Nikon-specific site, but I’m sure that Canon users have something similar.

One more thing to keep in mind. The lenses will outlast the camera. Buy decent lenses and they will last a long time and hold their value. Stick with big names (Canon, Nikon, Sigma).

by Zeke McGeek on Dec 13, 2011 7:25 AM EST up reply actions

OK, dumb noobie question

I’ve always wanted to shoot high-quality action pics of my wrestling team, but I have no clue what I need to do sports photography inside. Obviously, I’d like to not use a flash if possible.

What do I need lens-wise and settings-wise to get decent shots inside a HS gym?

"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King

by duck on Dec 13, 2011 8:17 AM EST up reply actions

I've shot a lot of wrestling

and generally speaking, flash is not an issue. I always check with the coaches and referee(s) first, but I’ve never had a complaint. However, I much prefer the “look” of the naturally-lit shots (flash tends to highlight the wrestlers but black out the background). As far as a lens, to shoot natural light, I use my Sigma 70-200 2.8 zoom. Most gyms are dark dungeons, so I can’t get more than 1/250 shutter speed. That will lead to motion blur during quick action, so you’ll have to settle for good shots during the relatively calm times. Zooms with 2.8 constant apertures can be expensive, so a prime lens would work too. Probably at least an 85 mm or longer if possible. White balance can be a problem too, depending on what kind of lights are in the gym. What kind of camera?

This is a natural light shot. Don’t have any good examples on-line of flash ones I’ve taken.

"Work fast. Throw strikes. Change speeds." Ray Miller

by Zeke McGeek on Dec 13, 2011 9:09 AM EST up reply actions

That's my problem - I've never used a low enough F-stop

Never would have thought I’d need to go all the way down to 2.8

I don’t really have a camera at the moment, but my sis does, and I was hoping to borrow hers for my tournament.

"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King

by duck on Dec 13, 2011 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

It does a few things

Allows faster shutter speed, and takes the background out of focus to put more emphasis on the subject. A sharp background can be distracting.

What kind of camera does sis have? Is rental an option?

I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8

by O'sFan21 on Dec 13, 2011 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

It depends on how picky she is.

The problems with cheap lenses typically are that

*They’re slower, that’s unavoidable without spending a whole lot of dough though

*They have poor sharpness, especially at wide apertures. This is visible in prints and when you zoom way in on the picture, but if you post it to facebook, no one will notice at all.

  • They have poor contrast. This is pretty much fixable in post with something like iPhoto or whatever a windows equivalent is.

Keep in mind that with a long lens, she’ll want to read up just a little bit on hand-holding because any hand shake is magnified.

Tommy hunter still sucks!

Ok... here's a question about f-stop semantics:

which one is “bigger”/“higher”/“larger”?

f/1.8 or f/22

I know what the numbers mean, but i’ve seen the terminology used both ways

by brek on Dec 13, 2011 8:16 PM EST reply actions

I've always felt that the higher number is "bigger/higher/larger"

so f/22 in this case.

At the same time it’s confusing, because stopping down is always closing aperture (i.e., increasing f-stop). You would stop down from f/1.8 to f/22.

"End of season like this, to make Boston go home sad, crying, I’ll take it all day."—Robert Andino

by zknower on Dec 13, 2011 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

yes, stopping down makes it smaller physically, but higher numerically

I always think of the “bigger” f-stop as being the lower one numerically

So I don't have three pictures

But these two pictures here are my pride and joy. My dad is an expert gardener (PhD in horticulture will do that for you), and with his knowledge he’s been able to grow a southwestern America style garden, with cacti, agave, yucca etc. etc. in addition to plants that are native to DC. It’s really quite remarkable considering the climate here is so different, and you don’t see very many gardens like it in Washington. Anyway, I know flowers can be rather boring to photograph, but cactus flowers are so beautiful. These photos are in full bloom. I got a new camera recently. It’s not SLR, but it’s one of those very advanced point and shoots with the option of completely manual controls, so it’s not a piece of junk (or, it better not be considering how much it cost). I’m still learning, of course, and I certainly can’t compete with Steve or the like. But I’ll show you a couple of this flower:

What do you think? Still too boring?

Contrary to popular belief, I am not Jewish.

by DCO'sfan on Dec 14, 2011 7:12 AM EST reply actions

No, not boring.

But it’s always a challenge with something that you’ve seen a lot of before, like flowers. My suggestion is to try different things, like getting in as close as you can to take only a portion of the flower. Or use some colored cloth or construction paper to hide the background and accent the color of the flower. With digital, you can try lots of different things and just delete the ones you don’t like.

Most important, just have fun with it!

i like them as well

i think you should play with severely small depth-of-field. Like pushing in a bit, and having just the central pistils (?) in focus, but the outer petals blurry.
