So I ate at this little Italian place in Brooklyn last night
and the food was quite good, though a bit fancy for my personal tastes (and a bit overpriced). Anyway, I ended up at the table next to Adrian Grenier (the dude from Entourage). Kinda random, but I thought i’d share.

A friend of a friend owns the place with his wife and is also the chef. It was our friend’s bday, so we went there to celebrate.

LOVE that place!!!
Only ate there once, but I remember the drugstore decor well. And my meal was delicious.
Yea, the drugstore idea is pretty cool
and the food was great, just not really my style. I’m glad you liked it though. The owners are really nice people. Apparently they’ve developed something of a following.

Brooklyn
is ruining New York City. People don’t realize this, but that’s what’s happening before our very eyes.
The game ball. Thanks. Roger. I'll put this with my collection of personal achievements. I mean, not right next to the good shit, but still.
You mean the fact that alot of the great places in NY aren't in Manhattan anymore?
I don’t know if I follow you…

A great thing about NYC...
…is the density and closeness of everything. But since the prices in Manhattan skyrocketed in the 90’s new businesses and the areas people settle down in are being pushed further and further afield. It’s to the point now where if you live in say the UWS and someone tells you about a great new restaurant in the South Slope of Brooklyn – it’s almost like going to Philly once you deal with the train or traffic. The city loses something with that. Of course there are benefits too though. It’s always a give and a take. I live downtown and for a period virtually everything good that was opening up was happening around me within 20 blocks or so. Now it’s all over the place. So it’s nowhere near as convenient as it used to be.
The game ball. Thanks. Roger. I'll put this with my collection of personal achievements. I mean, not right next to the good shit, but still.
Manhattan
is just the vital organ of the US economy. If the economy booms, Manhattan booms and vice versa. We just went through an unprecedented period of economic growth replete with an enormous income gap between rich and poor. Manhattan is the greatest place to spend money in this country – and rich people spent plenty of it here.

I like Brooklyn a lot
It’s a quieter way to experience the New York.

Yeah nothing destroys a city faster than an influx of young money and business
Detroit is so lucky they don’t have these problems.

I know, I know...
…these are petty, petty concerns in comparison to the real problems plenty of cities across the country have. But it’s part of being a New Yorker to kvetch about how things are changing. Still, this is one of them “good problems”.

I wasn't going to jump back in
because i’m really not one for internet arguments, but I do get what you are saying and I also like the fact that you list it as a “good problem”. My issue with NY has always been that they price even the mediocre to an extreme. Brooklyn became a place where people could have a good time, spend a bit less, and maybe relax a little in the process. I think Manhattan was ruining itself, and Brooklyn just capitalized on it.
That being said, I think it’s a win-win. There will always be great places to go in NYC. Sure, it might lose a bit to Brooklyn, but it also opens up a totally new venue to explore and enjoy.

So Brooklyn was the cool hidden gem but the secret's out now?
Where’s the new Brooklyn?

Jersey
It’s always been Jersey
"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
haha
yeah right.
I mean a lot of people have moved to Jersey City, Hoboken etc. But I don’t know if hidden gem is really what they’d call it.
I think the better deals now are in Astoria, certain part of LIC or Sunnyside in Queens. That’s about as close as you can get to the city for a decent price.

You obviously just have not found the gem

…where exactly is this Jersey Gem of which you speak?

My fear
is that NYC becomes like London. That this tolerance for traveling extends to the point where there are desirable areas enormous distances across the city. Up till very recently the geography of the city prevented that and you had a real gravity toward high density in Manhattan. But as this push out continues it’s getting more and more diluted. I’ve traveled to a lot of cities around the world and the key factor I’ve found for a cool environment is population density.
Again it’s no BFD though, not even close.

we're sending you down to AAA to work on your autoposting
don’t think about it too much. I’m sure you’ll be back in a few weeks when there’s more room on the roster.

7 seed in the ACC doesn't get you even in the NIT?
Now that’s a fucking down year for the conference.
