Re O's GM Roland Hemond ('88-'95) to HoF for Lifetime Achievement

"[The] Hall of Fame presses on with its mission as a custodian of history, resigned to the reality of never pleasing everybody. Well, almost never. Once in a while a decision is rendered that makes perfect sense and inspires smiles among baseball people from Seattle to Miami. The honor bestowed on Roland Hemond, a former White Sox [and Orioles] general manager, last week is an example: He’s going into the Hall of Fame as the 2011 winner of a Lifetime Achievement Award, appropriately named for Buck O’Neil, its first recipient, in 2008.

Nice. Nobody has lived a more eventful or exemplary baseball life, one encompassing 60 years."

there you go again...
He can’t recall why he was enthralled by baseball as a French Canadian kid growing up in Central Falls, R.I. He just knows he was. And unlike the stats-obsessed Harvard M.B.A.’s who populate many modern front offices, Hemond learned the game from the ground up. His first baseball job, in Hartford, Conn., paid $28 a week and entailed selling tickets and sweeping out the ballpark.

seriously. what’s w/ this guy?

it just makes me sad

knowing that I didn’t have anyone to teach me baseball from the ground up.

If you're still interested

I’m pretty sure Rob Dibble has some free time.

hard to get a view of the ground when you're in the basement, i reckon.

seriously, though…i love how this guy assumes that stats adherents have no “real” baseball experience.

actually, having just said that

I think the point is less about stats-obsession and more about Hemond’s blue-collarness compared to the Theo Epsteins of the world, which is a whole other show.

Agreed that poor Harvard shouldn't take any more blame in this "argument" than for "training the Unabomber"

Or for awarding an MBA to George W. Bush, for that matter, who did considerably more damage, of course, marketing Freedom Fries
