Sunday Bird Droppings
Morning, folks. If there's a silver lining to this current run besides tamping down expectations, I have yet to see it. Let's check in with our esteemed panel of Ornithologists...
School of Roch: Silver lining time again The "Professor of Posts" predicts a riot...or a Luke Scott breakout.
Steve Melewski: The O's have earned their way to six straight losses Melewski apparently DOES have time to wallow in the mire.

In minor league news, Trent Mummey had three steals as the Sho'birds beat Greensboro again. He already has eight steals this year. Manny Machado had two more hits. Ho hum.

I assume most of us have seen that New Era commercial with Alec Baldwin
Yankees will be dancing in October? Bite me.
So it may be my man crush on Alec getting in the way,
but I like the commercial. It shows true sports fans, still friends even though they are fans of rival teams. Its funny. Both teams get made fun of. Alec Baldwin does the same thing from 30 rock, where he makes fun other east coast places when compared to New York (which is kind of funny).
And honestly I want to live in the parallel universe where a Yankee fan has feelings and a Red Sox fan knows when he has gone too far.

How about the part
where Halpert says something along the lines of “how do you root for the Yankees? It’s like being a fan of fascism”.
I love how people act like Boston is the David to the Yankee Goliath. They are virtually the same fucking team, but one has been good for a long time and the other is whiny. Go have an off-season where you buy Gonzo (ok, trade for, but whatever) and Crawford and then cry about a salary cap and the fascist Yankees. Fuck both your teams and all the fans that follow.

Chito!
I loved Chito Martinez!
On that play, who is more at fault, Tackett, Martinez or the 3rd base coach?
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
yeah...
i imagine he’ll be in frederick before too long. they moved up conley, who was a guy they drafted out of towson. 25 is DEFINITELY too old for sally!
fwiw, henson’s also looking good at norfolk so far and they’re playing him in center and right. townsend’s also come out like a house of fire.

Townsend is definitely a guy I'm watching,
I’m pretty excited about his potential. If he can stay healthy, he could actually be a first base prospect. The first since, what, Eddie Murray? OK, I guess Calvin Pickering.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
yeah...
conversely, givens has gotten off to a pretty shitty start.

true,
Though I have next to basis for saying this, I’m higher on Schoop than I am on Givens. I really like Schoop’s batting eye. Sure he’s a pup and all, but the Orioles are due for a Latino prospect…
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
i like all those guys
givens is obviously behind the ball a little since he basically didnt play at all last year, but that’s a pretty enviable collection of Sally League talent up the middle.

Melewski's article is crap
“The Orioles have earned their way to 6 losses…” by “getting blown out” and “not pitching well.” And then he just prints a bunch of statistics.
You know what the Orioles haven’t been doing this year? Getting thrown out making stupid mistakes on the basepaths (with Pie as a maybe-exception). Missing cutoff guys. Bunting their way out of innings a thousand times.
The bats will come around. The pitching will improve. And Melewski needs to put a little more effort himself.

I kind of maintain that their biggest opponent has been themselves. just a lot of really stupid baseball going on right now.

The bats will come around
Believe it or not, I had a dream last night where BRob and Nick led off the game with back to back doubles, and then Lee, Vlad and Reynolds got back to back to back jacks. I usually don’t remember my dreams after I wake up, so I thought it was really odd that I remembered this one. Is it an omen?
You know what we're still doing though?
Playing terrible defense, not working the count and making opposing pitchers look great, bringing in mediocre relievers in high leverage situations, and walking too many batters.

The bats may well not come around
Who knows if Jones will ever get better (trade him now, Andy). Vlad and D Lee may well be done. We scraped the bottom of the free agent barrel, and there is a reason why good teams didn’t want many of these guys.
Nonetheless, the improvements in fundamentals are a great sign.

.653 team OPS. They’ll get better offensively. Of course, they could get better and STILL suck overall. At this rate though, they’re 2010 Mariners bad and I really don’t see that happening over the long run.
Folksy literate type.
lee and vlad could be done (cough sosa cough cough)
but nick, jones, and nicky aren’t this bad (OPS of .666, .542, .608). no effing way. and then you have no one who is obviously over performing.
Folksy literate type.
I'm not so sure on Adam and Matt
This might be what they are, or pretty close to it.

I don't know that Pie is better
He might not look as bad at the plate and he’s sure less frustrating to watch hit than Q*Bert, but I don’t know that he’s actually a better hitter. Nor do I know that he can play a better CF. Jones isn’t good out there, but Pie is pretty much an average LF, so why would he do so.great in center?

I think Adam
has looked sharp in the field this year. Although I have not dug into the small sample size of stats to check it out. Only blooper I can think of was a crappy throw home yesterday on a guy that would have scored almost regardless.

Jones has had a few nice plays
And he has seemed to play deeper. But he still has poor instincts and doesn’t react to balls well, so his range is limited despite his speed. While before there were hits dropping behind him, now there are more dropping in front of him.

even when his defensive numbers have been great
it’s been largely on his arm making up for his range (and then some).

My bold perdiction of the day is
Bergy will do well, and a few of the bats will break out. I was thinking Luke as the article above, but I think a few other people may start hitting today as well (since everyone is due and most are > than a .250 hitter). I think we avoid the sweep and feel good about ourselves when we meet up the Twins at home.

I hope we win today, because if we don’t then the game threads are going to start getting increasingly crazier.

I’m avoiding the Orioles by re-watching Bellator from last night. Patricio Pitbull is a beast.

Yeah, he caught Vettel couple laps from the end
just a great friggin’ race overall, no stupid mistakes by anyone, and Webber went from 18th to third. Unfortunately, Button lost a podium when Webber passed him. Finished 4th.
delmarva update...
machado had 3 hits today, mummey had a homer and two walks.
