Game 38: Orioles (17-20) @ Rays (23-15), 4:10pm EDT
Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays, May 14, 2011 4:10 PM EDT
The gods of the diamond deemed that the Orioles need a little more time to think about how pathetic they've been, so their Saturday matinee against the Rays has a late-afternoon start.
Die-hard baseball fans everywhere won't want to miss today's compelling rematch between Brad Bergesen and Wade Davis. These two titans squared off last Sunday in Baltimore and produced a spectacular affair that will be discussed for the ages. Davis lasted for five full innings, giving up 3 earned runs on 5 walks and 4 hits! Not to be outdone, Bergesen went an unholy four and two-thirds innings (!), giving up 5 earned runs on 2 walks and 9 hits! I expect MASN's ratings to reflect a suitable spike today. (Note: snark aside, Wade Davis is actually a pretty good pitcher. On the plus side for the Birds, he uses his right hand to throw the ball.)
To further whet your appetite for spectacular baseball, Jake Fox will be sitting in for Matt Wieters today. According to Roch, "Fox's game-calling has come into question, to put it mildly. You've heard manager Buck Showalter talk about bad 'pitch sequences.' You've seen instances where Fox and the starter haven't been on the same page."
In the four games that Fox has started at catcher this year, the Orioles have given up 32 runs. Woo-hoo!
After last Sunday's loss to complete Tampa Bay's sweep, Nick Markakis said, "It's definitely frustrating. We know what kind of ball clubs we are up against. We're just not getting the job done."; and Brian Roberts added, "It's one of those stretches where we can't seem to get the big hit, we can't seem to get the big out," Roberts said. "We can't seem to do a whole lot right, to tell you the truth."
Well boys, it's a week later. And last night, I didn't see anything to indicate you've figured out how to play like major leaguers just yet.
Ummmmm, go O's?

Degrees of luck
Normally, we’re sitting in the “Run over by a bus” territory but when you win 1000 for a double play, you move up to the “Run over by the bus, but ate a nice sandwich today” territory.

if fox isnt hitting like he was in spring training which he clearly isnt
why not bring up Tatum to be backup catcher. It would at least be an upgrade in defense.
He's on the DL

Our goal this game is to frustrate the Rays...
… by giving up extra base hits and then stranding the runners at third.
Its the rope a dope
All the running on the bases and these big swings on fly balls to the warning track are gonna wear them out.

It's because of games like this...
….that i get tired of the hate for 3E1N.
He’s 25, cheap, under team control for 4 more years, and when he’s on, he’s lethal. He deserves the opportunity to become more consistent. Even if it’s to groom him as a trade chip.

in 6 starts this year,
he has given up 3 runs or fewer 4 times. He has had two ugly games, and four solid starts where he didn’t go deep enough.
And that’s before today’s masterpiece. He’s absolutely a solid #5 guy. I’m not sure TIllman shouldn’t go to the pen, since he’s still figuring out his pitches, and Brad knows his.

but wasn’t efficient.
Arrieta and Tillman have had the exact same issues.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and a little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
I wouldn't include Arrieta in that group at all
he’s only gone less than 6 innings in 2 out of 8 starts.
There’s no doubt that both Tillman and Bergy have sucked.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Arrieta: 5-2/3 IP per start

6-8 starts don't mean anything really
Bergy’s career WHIP is over half a point lower than Arrieta’s.
I’m not saying Arrieta isn’t a better pitcher. I’m saying Bergy deserves further support and grooming from the Orioles.
People around here treat him like he’s a hack. He’s not. He’s a young guy who is still figuring stuff out and has had phenomenal success for stretches of time.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and a little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
Right
and in your view that includes his 2009 that is his true ability. To most of us his 2009 was a fluke since he was a) never a prospect, b) never showed major league stuff, and c) hasn’t shown any ability to repeat that success. Arrieta meanwhile was a huge prospect, has major league stuff, and has shown improvement rather than regression. It really doesn’t seem very complicated to me.
All that being said I don’t know what you mean by him deserving further grooming. Is the fact that he might go to the bullpen a problem for his grooming?
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8

but it’s not just 2009. It’s the last two months of last year as well. Look at the stats.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and a little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
Eh
I just see a very inconsistent year. Horrible first month, decent 2nd, awful 3rd, pretty bad 4th, incredible 5th, and solid 6th. Declining K/9 from July to October doesn’t look too hot.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
OMG, K/9
can’t have this debate again.
K-rates don’t correlate to wins. Ask Daniel Cabrera.
A bunch of ground ball outs are just as good as strikeouts, and they actually get your starter deeper into a game.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and a little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
and you're saying 3 good months out of 6.
In his overall career, he has 9 months of good starts, and, 4-1/2 of bad. By all means, let’s toss him.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and a little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
...and last word is yours,
I gotta bolt.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and a little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
Who's saying toss him?
And where do you get 9 months of good? He had 2-3 good months last year and 2-3 good months in 2009.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
I forgot how short his season was in '09
my bad.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and a little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
Dude, we don't need him to be Cy Young
we need him to be a solid #4 or more likely #5. And honestly, he looks like he’s it more than Chris Tillman and his straight-as-hell 89 mph fastball.
"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King
Oh I agree
that right now he looks much better than Tillman. I still don’t think he’s pitched at all like a solid 4/5 last year or this year (this start excluded obviously).
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Getting into the 6th in more than half your starts would be nice.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
off the phone
who was “a prospect” and who wasn’t has nothing to do with anything at this level!
I’m not arguing for Brad over Arrieta. I’m arguing for consideration of him over Tillman. Not even that it’s a done deal, just consideration. The haters don’t seem to want to give him that.
Bergy’s August and September last year:
11 starts, nearly 7 IP (6.8) per start, 41K, 21BB, 2.88 ERA, 1.12 WHIP.
He faced Texas, Boston (twice), New York, Toronto, and Tampa Bay in those games. Despite this, he was one of our best pitchers down the stretch. Were you aware of that?
You’re saying I’m only going on his first year numbers. I’m saying you have to count more than the starts where he came back from injury last year, and his inconsistency these past 6 weeks.
The guy deserves more slack than people here are giving him, and tonight is certainly proof of that.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and a little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
Prospect status absolutely matters
People become prospects when there are expectations of success at the major league level based on amateur and minor league performance, tools, and makeup. Non-prospects don’t succeed nearly as often.
If all you’re arguing for is consideration over Tillman you’ll get no argument from me because Tillman sucks.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Fuck that shit
Someone’s a “prospect” because they went to the right camp, got in the baseball factory school, knew someone who knew someone or supposedly hit 95 on a juiced gun once in HS.
I’ll take actual performance in MiLB and coaching evaluations over who’s a prospect every time. Fucking elitism rearing its fuckin’ ugly head again.
"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King
What the fuck are you talking about?
The only way you crack any of the top prospect lists is through a combination of tools/skills and performance (either amateur or MiLB). Going to the right camp or knowing people doesn’t make a shit of difference – it might get you signed, but it doesn’t get you onto any top prospect lists. I don’t know where you would ever get that idea. Actual MiLB performance IS one of the factors that leads to people being top prospects.
Yeah it’s totally fucking elitist to think that the players with the best abilities are the best prospects.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Apparently...
if you’re a “prospect” when signed, your bad performances can be explained away, but if you weren’t someone’s pet project when signed, well, fuck it, a 1.363 WHIP in the majors means you’re dog shit, and that prospect with a 1.543 WHIP should get another chance.
FUCK THAT SHIT. What the fuck has a pitcher DONE???? Given two pitchers and two sets of results, I’m going with RESULTS and coaching evaluations every time. Best results plays, prospects can fuckin’ sit.
Brad Bergesen has a CAREER 1.3 WHIP in MLB.
It’s better than Arrieta.
It’s better than Tillman.
It’s better than BRIAN FUCKING MATUSZ.
Yes, go look it up if you think I’m lying. Better than Brian Matusz.
But he wasn’t a prospect, so let’s let Chris Tillman shit the bed another dozen starts.
"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King
I’ve already been over why I think his career numbers are problematic with ZK above, but nobody is trying to explain anything away. People put guys on prospect lists based on who’s most likely to achieve long-term major league success. One guy struggling another guy succeeding in small sample sizes don’t have much of an impact on that.
So, when you look at the combination of minor league numbers (where Bergy is much worse than Matusz and slightly Arrieta – I don’t know why you people keep bringing up Tillman since you’ll never hear me say he’s better than Bergy) and peripherals and stuff nobody is going to be that convinced by brief periods of success in the majors.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
No, it doesn't.
MiLB performance matters. There are dozens of highly ranked prospects every year who flame out.
A player’s status as a former “prospect” — which itself is not an absolute, since it’s basically a bunch of different lists by different people — should NEVER, EVER be a factor into whether they get to stick at the ML level. It should entirely be based on observed talent and performance in the majors and minors.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and a little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
I don't know what you guys think goes into prospect status
but MiLB performance is GIGANTIC factor.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
That may be a good argument to send 3E1N to the bullpen
It’s easier to pull a reliever quickly when it becomes obvious he doesn’t have it that day.
When Matusz comes back
you think 3E1N should stay in the rotation? What about when Duch is ready? I think his future is the bullpen as a poor man’s JJ.

Duch doing his best to pitch this year
Shortstop J.J. Hardy spent time with Duchscherer in Sarasota, and was impressed by the veteran’s progress and his demeanor.
“When I got down there, he was still kind of hurting. You could tell. Any time you have injuries and you want to get back, it puts you in a bad mood. For the first week, I felt like he was in a pretty bad mood,” Hardy said. "After he started feeling better, he changed as a person, he changed with everything.
“He came to the ballpark, he was happy, he was excited to get after it. Performance-wise, I stood in on a couple of his bullpens and I was real impressed with that. He hits his spots better than, I think, anybody with any of his pitches. He just kind of pinpoints.”
