3E1N!! Catch The Fever!

Orioles 6, Rays 0

I missed most of this game, so I can't write a proper recap. And nobody else wanted to kill their Saturday night doing it either. If someone wants to come along and tart this up, be my guest. Or you can read the TSN Recap

Suffice to say that, just as we have all come to expect, Brad Bergesen dominated the Rays tonight with a complete game shutout, and Mark Reynolds and Jake Fox showed off their usual fireworks with the longball—just as they always do.....Bwahahahaha!

The line on Bergy:

9 IP, 0 ER, 4H, 1BB, 5K. He threw 103 pitches, 68 for strikes. Tampa Bay was shutout for the first time this year.

The season series between these teams is now tied at 4-4. Jake Arrieta will face Andy Sonnanstine in the rubber game tomorrow at 1:40 PM EDT.

UPDATE: I still didn't watch this game, but it does seem that some folks started to hit a little. Every starter but Luuuke and JJ got a hit, and Roberts, Markakis, Vladdy, and Aj all had multiple-hit games. So that's nice.

I did not include Fox or Reynolds in the poll

because they each only had one hit and are both batting below .200. The dingers are nice, but those guys still need to step it up.

Eh, I don't know about this

Fox was definitely birdland today. His HR came after he fouled off a million pitches and he also drew a walk. So he got on base 2 out of 4 times.

Then, there is that whole unexpected element. Not only did he homer and draw a walk, but he did it off of a RHP. His OPS is something like .150 off of RHP this yea and Buck continues to start him against them.

I saved the best for last: he CALLED the game for Bergy. Even people who like Fox want Tatum on the team as backup catcher because not one pitcher has done well with Fox behind the plate. This was the second best start for an Oriole pitcher all year.

Im an idiot, completely mixed up my Jake fox splits. He sucks hitting leftys, but rocks righties, so that part was expected. The catching a good game was the primary unexpected surprise.

Fox

will hit better, but Reynolds? A 0.205 season may be all he can do this year, with 200 SO….

If only Albers or Wiggy was available

Oh, for feck's sake

I’ll add Adam.

Since he's got the Moose's old number

maybe he is finally channeling him….Bergy’s smart and as long as he stays healthy I don’t see why he can’t be solid as hell…..

It restates the negativeness of the universe. The hideous, lonely emptiness of existence--nothingness--the predicament of man, forced to live in a barren, Godless eternity, like a tiny flame flickering in an immense void--with nothing but waste, horror and degradation--forming a useless, bleak straitjacket in a black, absurd cosmos. -Play It Again, Sam-

Too bad the last of the "core three" hasn't joined the show

Unfortunately, Rivera shows no signs of descending into pettiness or unprofessionalism, or of losing it. Damn, I hate that.

but it is games like this that keep me rooting for him. Some guys do poorly and I don’t care but he seems to have had some rotten luck the past year. Find your groove buddy!

Around the minors 5-14:

Norfolk lost Lehigh Valley 8-7. Ryan Adams continues to impress, going 1-3 with a double, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. It was Adams 9th double on the season. Reimold went 1-4 with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk. Josh Bell went 2-5 with 3 strikeouts. Brandon Snyder pinch hit, and he also struck out. Chorye Spoone continues to struggle of late, going 3 innings, surrendering 4 earned runs, 5 hits and a walk. He struck out 2.

Bowie lost to Erie 4-2 in ten innings. Ronnie Welty went 2-4 with his 7th homer and a strikeout. Xavier Avery went 1-5 with a strikeout. Caleb Joseph went 0-4 with a strikeout. Steve Johnson went six strong innings, six strikeouts, 2 walks, 7 hits and 2 earned runs. He did allow a long ball. Jose Diaz tossed an inning, allowing 2 hits and a walk, but not a run. Pedro Viola lost the game for Bowie in the 10th generally sucking, going 1 inning and allowing 3 hits including a homer, while striking out 3. His ERA for the season stands at 1.69. I need to stop holding him taking up a roster spot against him.

Frederick was shutout tonight in Kinston, losing 5-0. LJ Hoes singled in 4 at bats, striking out twice. Tyler Townsend didn’t give reasons to celebrate his birthday, going 0-4 with 3 strikeouts. Oliver Drake really struggled tonight, going 4.1 innings, giving up 12 hits, 5 earned runs, with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks. His ERA in the pitcher friendly Carolina League is still 2.57 though.

Delmarva beat Greensboro 7-2. Jonathan Schoop had a nice evening, going 2-4 with a triple and homer, though he did strikeout. No error though! Michael Ohlman singled twice in 4 at bats. Mychal Givens went 0-3, with his sixth caught stealing (he is now 2 for 8 in that department). No word yet if he’s a fan of Jane’s Addiction. Tim Berry, recovering from an injury, had a decent start, going 5 innings allowing 2 earned runs, with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks. Fellow bonus baby Jarret Martin went 4 strong innings, striking out six, allowing 1 hit and 1 walk. He now has 22 strikeouts in 22.1 innings.

Michael Aubrey hit 4 homers tonight for the Syracuse Chiefs.

and the Oakland radio guy referred to an Indian reliever as “a man of ample proportions.” Every time I type see he got into a game, that’s what I think of!

That's a little harsh

AJ had a nice game, and has been on quite a little run of late. That said, I think the clear choice here is obviously 3E1N, but there has to be some opposition, if only for show.

Holy cah-rap: amid all the excitement of the sudden appearance of Cy Bergurglarson [sp.?], I just noticed:

unless I’m confused (or confuseder than usual — tough week here), we’ve essentially had 3 CGs in a row (counting Zach’s 9) from our starters, right? When was the last time THAT happened? I mean, it couldn’t be in the current millennium, for sure.

OK, 2-nite it’s Jake for the Trojan— and I get to watch! After trading shutouts, you get the feeling that something pool-table 9-7-ish may be in the works, with base hits over shortstop rolling to the wall for “triples”, pop-ups ricocheting off girders for “doubles” and like that. Let’s be the 9!

Go O’s!

Yup, immortal for exactly one game in '08, bless him.

But three CGs in a row sounds like such a 70’s thing, I really wonder if it’s happened in the lifetimes of our, er, more chronologically-challenged CC’ers.

Oops, almost forgot the breaking Other News (Lord knows I tried): the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest winner is...Azerbaidzhan!!

Which isn’t exactly in Europe…but then, the Eurovision thing isn’t exactly about songs. It’s about crappy pop-crooning and, er, “showmanship.” Every year tens of millions watch — many betting on the outcome — as the thing descends like clockwork to a new lowest-common-denominator level of pablum struggling to redefine mass inoffensiveness.

Well, they didn’t make it. Again. I’m offended. I mean, Peaches and Herb… hell, Milli Vanilli were musical geniuses compared to these tone-deaf wizards:

They are nuts for this crap in Israel

maybe because its one of the few things Israel can compete in internationally with a shot at winning (which they have), although the Tel-Aviv basketball team (with its roster larded with NBA castoffs and wannabees) has been making waves in the Euro league lately. Some of the acts are (unintentionally) quite funny; other than that they have no redeeming value whatsoever (IMHO).

Ahahahahahhaha, good one!

But they’re too good for Eurovision, of course…Meanwhile, in Baku (Azerbaidzhan), the capital partied all night. No joke— like they’d won the World Cup or something. Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…………….

One thing you may not have known about Brad Bergesen

I lost my cool a little in the GT, but…

Brad Bergesen now has a better career WHIP than Chris Tillman, Jake Arrieta, and Brian Matusz. Yup, even Brian Matusz.

Something to consider.

SP

Starting pitching is holding up and could yet get a lot better. D is good. Bullpen needs improving. Hitting has seen mostly good days but overall is inconsistent; Reynolds, Scott, Lee, Wieters (sort of) and Roberts (also sort of) have to join Markakis/Guerrero/Jones on the ‘going up’ elevator, to join Hardy.
