This must end now. Part 1
The Orioles have promoted a losing culture for too long now. They lose on the field and they lose off the field. They put terrible teams out to play and they provide a terrible ballpark experiences for the fans. Today the Orioles blew a 6 run lead and the worst part was that every single fan on Camden Chat could see it coming the minute that Michael Gonzalez came into the game and gave up one hit. It was almost a joke, as in "Hey wouldn't it be funny if we blew another 6 run lead" No, it wasn't funny.
NESN showed a clip from 2007 of Julio Lugo jumping up and down as the Orioles bullpen blew a 6 run lead. Nothing has changed, nothing .A bunch of free agent relievers come in and blow the game, same old story.
We were told that Buck Showalter would come in with an iron fist and remove any one who wasn't a nugget or a pile jumper. Newsflash, Micheal Gonzalez will never jump in a pile and Kevin Gregg is not a nugget. Our lineup did a job today and scored 7 runs; I don't care if we could have scored more, we scored 7 today which should be good enough to win any game. Chris Tillman pitched well, but had to leave with an injury. Our bullpen couldn't hold onto a 6 run lead. Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic. I don't care about the errors because frankly even if Reynolds makes that play in the 6th, it would have been tough to get Crawford. Either way, a good relief pitcher would be able to pick up his teamate and bail him out. That wasn't the case, because Gonzalez is a pathetic baseball player who could care less about winning because he is making his millions with no effort and with no fear of repercussion. It's time to show these guys who they really are.
It's time to remove Kevin Gregg from the closers role, because if he can't throw a strike under pressure then maybe he can throw one while in a mop up role. It's time to send Gonzalez down to AAA to see if he can get minor leaguers out because he can't get anyone out in the Majors. It's time to release Jeremy Accardo because he is useless and can be cut with the snap of a finger. If Buck and Andy can't come together and realize this has to be done, then I lose all respect for them.
We are tired of being a laughing stock of this league, We are tired of watching other teams celebrate while our overpaid, 2 year rentals walk off the mound with their heads hung. We are tired of having all of my love for this team thrown away by seeing a bunch of free agent relievers who could care less about the fans. This has to end now and if Buck Showalter and Andy MacPhail don't see the need for change then they don't deserve to be in baseball. This is an offical plea for a real change and a real desire to win. When Buck fails to do this he becomes no different than Dave Trembley and Sammy Perlozzo and every other interem manager just like Gregg and Gonzalez are no different than Jamie Walker and Chris Ray and Danys Baez and every other bum that has been trotted out there.
More to come on different topics later in the week. Stay tuned.

when our collective testicles get crushed by a giant sledgehammer, this is the stuff that needs to be said. I just threw a bunch of lawnchairs around outside for a good 10 minutes. think I might do it again later tonight too, the point is, rant on my friend.

games like this happen
you can’t bail after 1 terrible loss. the hitting is starting to come around, the starting pitching is too. when matusz returns our rotation has a chance to be very special. i know the bullpen sucks, but theres not a whole lot we can do now. the yankees have just lost 6 in a row, we have now lost 2 out of the last 7. buck did all that he could to find a pitcher, but when tillman got hurt it put us in a bad situation. red sox have the most explosive lineup in the majors, and it showed tonight
Luckily, I missed this game.
But the point is, MacPhail has now made the same mistake 2 years is a row. And Buck needs his green light to move those overpriced sacks of shit.
Buck also has to do whatever he can to give us a legit ballclub, including the bullpen. By any standard, the bullpen has been horrible this year, with the exception of Koji, who is okay so far. There can be no more excuses. Bad relievers who consistently suck like Gregg, Gonzo, Accardo, and Rapada (All free agents!!!) have no room on a ML roster. They’re already in the BP because they’re not good enough for the rotation.

It's not one game
Gonzo’s been horrible since he got here, save for 6 weeks last season. That’s it. Other than that, he’s been terrible. Cut your losses, get him off this roster.

BOY am I glad I couldn't watch this game. It sounds like the Mother's Day Massacree: Deja Vu All Over Again
And I’m not going to take a look at the Game Thread either, as I can imagine all too easily what’s on there.
Sure, I’d join a Kevin Gregg lynch mob. But hey, I prolly would’ve yesterday: guy’s an arsehole, doesn’t disguise it and is not very good at baseball, so he deserves to be strung up by one leg and left overnight. In Norfolk.
But perspective will out: Fenway is famous for devouring 6 run leads, often enough those of the Sawx. It’s a poor venue for a half-dozen reasons, but that’s life. And death, if you assume the game’s laws of statistics and probability are going to remain uniform there.
So yeah: faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaccccccccccccccccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk. Now that that’s out of the system, let’s get back out there. And sure: let try other guys in chips-are-down spots. Then cut Kevin Gregg down Wednesday morning.
Go O’s!

He woke up with is and got treatment, but it was getting tight again so with the six run lead Showalter lifted him.

It's hard to say which of these is the worst.
Mother’s Day Meltdown/Massacre speaks for itself.
That July 1, 2009 game was awful because it obliterated all traces of good feelings that were leftover from the historic comeback of Birdland Day the previous evening.
Tonight we had a chance to claw our way up to .500 and stick it to the Red Sox after improbably taking a series in TB, with a strong young starter tomorrow and the chance to build a winning streak. Instead our bullpen laid a steaming pile of shit on our hopes and dreams.

The only thing that would satsify me
is to hear Buck say: “there are no excuses for pitching this badly at this level.” and demoting Gonzo, Accardo and Rapada. None of them are above replacement level.

Are you so sure though?
Do we have any relievers in AAA that are pitching well? It’s all well and good to say that we need to get rid of struggling relievers because they suck when they’re supposed to be good, but what about the pitchers in our system who just plain suck? I mean, do you really think a bullpen full of Rupe’s and Rapada’s will be any better off?

Didn't Poop-y have like a 13.50 ERA when we sent him down last week?
If we want to have a witch hunt for Gregg and Gonzo, I’ll be the first to start passing out torches. But what better options do we realistically have? And that’s not rhetorical, does anyone know? It’s easy to say get rid of the bullpen but then what?

Yep
For the first appearance or two, you at least get the call-up pitcher’s advantage — no real scouting report on him, never seen him live. We could get some decent innings out of that by itself, and win a few ballgames we lose right now, then learn some useful things for future planning when the league makes it’s adjustments.
Shows there will be accountability for failure, both for the money men and for Rupe-like performers. Shows that bullpen arms for the rotating, volatile commodity they are.

Much as I dislike Gonzo, I am with you here, AMD.
I remember what it’s like when we see the Pedro Violas and Bob McCrorys of the world attempting to pitch in the major leagues. The result is, shockingly, worse than it is for the likes of Gonzo.
I think most teams could manage to do a little bullpen shuffling and improve by calling up some AAA guys, but I don’t think the O’s are among these. It’s on the FO that they spend $10M on shitty pitches like Gonzo and Gregg and have no depth in the minors.

Yes and no
I agree that sometimes you don’t get any advantage from the unknown guy if he’s bad enough. I was in the stadium for the Bob McCrory debut and remember that bloodbath well. This approach can be as ugly or uglier than the current shitfest on occasion.
But you learn something from that and say “Next.” That keeps the pressure to perform on everybody in the system and puts incentive on the FO to think about how to build the better pitching depth that enables other organizations to do it.

I don't think they can just dump or demote Gregg.
They don’t have anyone to take his place. If Koji gets into form, maybe move him into the closer spot and bump Gregg down in the order.
Gonzales though – we are a quarter of the way into the season and he has shown what? – Nothing. Since it looks like Alfredo Simon is coming back, put him in the pen and send Gonzales to Norfolk.

Westie...
You nailed it with this one.
Couldn’t agree with every word more. I really hope Buck doesn’t act around the team the way he acted in the postgame interview. And I’m really really really pissed the fuck off now when I see his “I prefer the win rule” MASN commercials. Koji looked pretty damn good out there last night and should’ve come in to close the game out. Like EME calls it, this reliever roulette is bullshit. With this bullpen, when you see someone pitching well LEAVE THEM THE FUCK IN THE GAME.
JJ should have come out for another inning and Koji should have SURELY come back out in the 9th if you really “prefer the win rule”. Because, as EME pointed out, every new guy you bring in introduces a whole new level of risk, and with this bullpen, they are ALL Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. So when you see a guy that has decent stuff, LEAVE HIM out there within reasonable pitch limits!
by Wieters Wieners on May 17, 2011 8:49 AM EDT reply actions
This was more of a fully loaded revolver than a game of reliever roulette.
I am a big fan of giving a guy who’s doing fine a second inning. But Gonzo sucked, Accardo sucked, Rapada would have sucked as soon as he faced a righty, JJ wasn’t all that great and Koji is a delicate flower.
So basically we pulled the trigger six times and six bullets came out. That sounds good until you remember we were pointing the gun at ourselves.

Especially Ray and Baez. And especially Baez because he was yet another spokesperson for the Orioles tendency to give relievers horrible contracts. You could argue that his deal was worse than Gonzo’s.

I want part 2. But in response, we’re the laughing stock of the league because of the douchebag nature of two teams that need no introduction in our division. If their fans weren’t such arrogant and self-aggrandizing then we would be less of a laughing stock. Granted, we’d still be pretty pathetic, but if we weren’t overshadowed by the greatest teams on God’s green earth, then we wouldn’t be so small in comparison.
Don’t get me wrong, I want us to improve and be able to win, and I certainly put most of the blame on the Orioles, but it sucks that we’re in such a “strong” division.

I think those go hand in hand.
We’re the laughing stock because those douchebag fans make it a point to invade our park and arrogantly claim that we’re the worst team in the league because THEY can beat us.

We are tired of being a laughing stock of this league,
This is one thing that really annoys me based on. I really hate it when columnists take pot shots at the O’s. Fan comments on forums fine. Otherwise, I don’t think it’s professional nor necessary. You want to say the team is bad, that’s perfectly fine. But there’s no need to turn the O’s into laughing stocks or the butt of your jokes. I realize a lot of times it’s in good fun, but it’s just gets annoying if you’re an O’s fan.

Oh it definitely annoys me
but I don’t blame them. Once the O’s stop being jokes people will stop making jokes about them.
