less cowbell

those guys are out there most nights. They are in the right field bleachers. The photo above is exactly where they are sitting. I was at the game last night- they seemed louder b/c the stands were so empty.

19 appearances – Given up a run in 12 of those 19. Given up more than one run in 5 of those. Given up a run in 6 of his last 7 games.

Welp, this morning's contest answered the question What is the worst baseball game you've ever gotten up at 6 am to watch?

I bet somebody on an A’s blog has written, in SC fashion, You win a certain number of games by accident. In this case the accident is called the Baltimore Orioles. And their sucktitude can be relentless.

OK, tomorrow is another day, as Scarlett O’ Hernia put it after a particularly painful injury. But it’s still TODAY here for me! See, that’s the Super Down Side of the living-8-hrs-into-your-future thing: I’ve had to walk around all day with this piece o’ cheet loss looking over my shoulder like Chris’s evil monkey or sth.

Anyway, it’s Bergurglarson [sp.?] against how-can-this-guy-not-be-a-closer-with-the name Outman tomorrow morning. I may get up for this one— And I May Not. I don’t have to do this, y’know. I’m a qualified brain surgeon.

Go O’s!

Funny story about Vlad

the other day one of my co-workers was apparently trying to make fun of me (being the only Orioles fan in the office) by talking shit about how Vlad was donezo, and then after Vlad walked off against the Royals EVERYONE else gave it back to this guy (playfully, you know, but highly amusing).

But yeah, Vlad doesn’t look great unless he can either a) find some more power, or b) just stay hot indefinitely with his ichiro-style performance. And even with all that said, he’s still been the O’s second best hitter on the season, which is terrifically depressing.

by Andrew_G on May 28, 2011 10:06 AM EDT reply actions

With the offense is down, he’s not the complete anchor he would have been 6 or 8 years ago with his current numbers.

Still, it would be nice to have a DH with a .900 OPS, yes it would.

I didn’t get to see the game yesterday, only caught the last two outs. Reconstructing it from the box score, it looks like a weird game. 4 x GIDP…2 runs in 4.1 IP…on 102 pitches??? Another Reynolds error, de rigeur by now I guess.

And Bergesen, who stinks, goes today versus a lefty. Might give this one a miss, too.

If a player is getting DL'd, we can probably rule out anyone who appeared in or warmed up during last night's game.

Since it was announced during the telecast that Viola was going to be flying to Oakland.

Sadly that means it’s not Gonzalez. It’s also not Simon, or Rapada (who warmed up at one point).

Beyond that, who knows? I doubt they’re cutting Gonzalez, but I sure wish they would.

I do vividly remember

watching Man U beat Bayern in the final in 1999, coming back from 1-0 down at the 89th minute to win 2-1 in regulation time. Everyone went mental in the friend’s living room we were watching in and it was a pretty amazing atmosphere. So I have a small amount of affinity…

I have the same feeling about the Man U/Yankees affinity

However much Chelsea or others try to buy their way to success I’ll always feel like Man U are the chief pantomime villains because they were always that club when I was growing up (and was already an Os fan/Yankees hater smarting from the ‘96 playoffs). It’s the celebration of dominance, the way every player when they transfer claims they always wanted to play for them, the range of ‘well-respected’ but highly annoying characters…many parallels.

Wigan can’t be the O’s though…you need a team who were great but have fallen from grace. Until recently I’d have said that Tottenham were the Premier League equivalent of the Os.

by alexw on May 28, 2011 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

You could make an argument that Liverpool went from being a competitive Big Four team to rather mediocre.

But that’s more recent, and we’ll see how long it lasts. A lot of their problems were due to Tom Hicks horrible ownership, and I hope they can redeem themselves (I’m a fan).

If you want to talk about buying your way to success, you need to look outside the Premier League and look at Real Madrid. They are the European equivalent.

by DCO'sfan on May 28, 2011 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

hmm well

Liverpool have been back and forth since their true heyday (roughly ‘75-’90). But they’ve had longer times in the wilderness than this, and remember they’ve been Premier League runners up only a couple of seasons ago and European Champions six years ago. And overall they’re still certainly in the top two English clubs of all time.

You’re right about Real but I don’t know if you saw what happened with Chelsea directly after the Abramovich takeover, but it was just ridiculous. Money flying absolutely everywhere in such a short period of time, it really did feel like it was devaluing success. And it was the first time it had happened in such a pronounced way, recently several others clubs have done similar things on a smaller scale (e.g. Man City)

By the way, Barca are putting on a clinic here.

Funny story, actually...

I had a crush on Torres before I was even interested in soccer, and that developed into die-hard Liverpool fandom. I was heartbroken when Torres left.

How do you feel about being owned by PHN though? :)

by alexw on May 28, 2011 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I try to forget that we're owned by Henry.

And it will be even more torturous if he makes the team respectable again.

I read something claiming

that the Torres, Carroll etc transfers were an instance of ‘Moneyball’ coming to English football. Pretty spurious on balance. Though football has just as much idiotic ‘conventional wisdom’ as baseball, prime for gaining an edge by actually treating things rationally (though less statistically sophisticated)

by alexw on May 28, 2011 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

That surprises me, especially the concept being employed by Henry and his group

As the Red Sox aren’t exactly a poster child for responsible and intelligent spending (Dice-K, anyone?) It was my greatest fear but at the same time greatest hope that they would spend like crazy because an open checkbook is absolutely essential in football today, particularly in the Premier League. It was also my greatest fear because Henry has demonstrated a lack of shrewd spending tactics (although the blame may fall more on Epstein than the owner).

Liverpool is in desperate need of direction, but they have also been very unlucky in terms of injuries, and there’s not much you can do to control that. In retrospect, unloading Torres may ultimately turn out to be a smart decision because his knee problems were getting worse and worse each season.

And as for your earlier point about Chelsea vs. Liverpool fandom, that’s like asking me to switch to being a Yankees fan because the Orioles suck right now. No. Just no.

by DCO'sfan on May 28, 2011 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

'Just no'? But Torres looks better in blue...

I shouldn’t think you should worry too much about how money will be spent at Liverpool. If they have some to spend, it’s usually the manager (i.e. Kenny) who’ll have the biggest say in who’s bought. Since Dalglish is an astute chap (and, dare I say it, a likeable element of Liverpool) money will be spent wisely.

by alistairlp on May 28, 2011 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I did see the Chelsea thing

But roughly the same thing happened with Real when Perez became President, both the first time and second time. And they did almost the same thing as the Yankees did when the Yankees failed to make the playoffs—buy, buy, and buy some more (i.e. Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka, plus other highly skilled but less flashy players). It was infuriating, especially because they stole my beloved Xabi Alonso from Liverpool.

If there are any mac experts here...

(including zk) you may be able to help me. I’m going to take my computer to the genius bar eventually but maybe you can tell me what’s going on because the internet has been very vague. This has happened at least 15 times, if not more, in the last two weeks. I open up my laptop after it has been sleeping (closed) and suddenly the screen dims and I get a really scary black box that says something to the effect of, “there is a problem and you need to restart your computer,” in English and a bunch of different languages. There’s no other way to get out besides restarting. I think this will eventually lead to a crash but maybe it can be fixed without Apple’s intervention (I have Apple Care, so it’s not like it’s going to cost me money to get it fixed). Also, my computer’s battery has not been holding charge very well. Ever 1-2 minutes it loses a percentage point. The two problems could be related (and that seems very likely). Help would be much appreciated.

I’m so pale that if I forget to wear sunscreen, I will be burnt on every exposed part of my body within five minutes (sometimes even less).
