Some weekend numbers
I started to write a game recap yesterday but I was just so disgusted with the Orioles that I couldn't do it. By now you probably already know what happened Sunday, so here are some of the numbers from the disgusting weekend series:
- RS: 7. RA: 19
- RISP: 3-for-21
- LOB: 25
- Rotation: 15 IP, 23 H, 15 ER, 4 BB, 9 K, 3 HR
- Bullpen: 12 IP, 13 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 11 K, 1 HR
Actually let's talk about the bullpen. It's been the most unreliable thing about the team so far, but they did a pretty respectable job this series. Mike Gonzalez, Jim Johnson, Kevin Gregg, Jason Berken, and Clay Rapada combined to throw eight shutout innings in the three game series. All of the damage was done by Jeremy Accardo and Koji Uehara, each of whom gave up two runs in two innings pitched.
Today is, mercifully, an off day. That means the Orioles can't lose! Frankly, I need the day away from Orioles baseball.

Does anything done by pitchers in 12 innings mean anything?

not really
I was just looking at what happened. I certainly didn’t attempt to say what WOULD happen based on those numbers, did I? Pardon me for talking about the weekend.
Actually
and it’s not really directed at you, but I feel like every time anyone says anything someone else says SSS which I understand but it’s still annoying because what in the hell can we talk about then.
I also hate how i always forget that every time is two words.
Well, I mean, we can talk about all sorts of things!
Why aren’t the starters going deeper into games? How deep into games do starting pitchers have to go to be successful? Why do the Orioles consistently fail with runners in scoring position (or does it just seem that way, and we in fact are about average with runners in scoring position)? How does our bullpen perform in low leverage situations compared to high leverage situations – the sample sizes are small here too, but I can’t help but to think at first approximation that one reason our bullpen did better this series was because the games were already lost by the time they entered them.
I have a hard time feeling like we are short of things to talk about. Not that I’m being critical of your choice of what to talk about, but I don’t feel like a lack of topics is present here.

I thought the recap was fine
James F, small sample size? I have been watching these same problems for the O’s for the last 5 years at least.
We can talk about those other things all day long, im with Stacey, I need a break from O’s baseball.
just today i was posting a comment on another blog...
and “everytime” was getting the red-line of ignorance. I was kind of surprised to learn that.

Yeah, talking about small samples is perfectly fine. What I don’t think is fine is when people try to forecast future performance from small samples, which doesn’t apply above. But those 12 innings happened. They sucked. Let’s us curse about it.

Through April, the 2011 offense is pretty much the 2010 offense
I like the Rays and root for them for obvious reasons. But I saw about half of the games this weekend and it was about 1.5 games too much. The O’s are depressing. I looked up a few batting stats through April for the 2010 Orioles and the 2011 Orioles.

OK, it’s one month and we’ll see improvement and we’ll eventually be able to say that MacPhail and his front office and scouts all knew what they are doing this off season. Well, that’s the optimistic viewpoint. How long to wait? I’m on the verge of just ignoring these guys like last year.
it's actually WORSE than last year

I am not a reflexive nay sayer. I remain hopeful that the Orioles’ hitting and pitching will improve after Hardy and Matusz return from the DL. I remain hopeful that Vlad, Lee, and Reynolds will pick up the pace. But, if they don’t improve, will management nevertheless keep trotting them out all season?
We don’t have a replacement for Reynolds. But, I would be more interested in watching games with Snyder and Reimold at 1B and DH. It is more fun to watch the younger guys than the tired, old guys. I say that as a tired, old guy myself. This is not a fun team to watch.
Well, Bell is as much a replacement for Reynolds as Snyder is for Lee
But with the amount of money Reynolds is owed over the next two seasons, I can’t see that happening.

I think if Reynolds was doing what I thought he'd be doing
He’d be fun to watch. Home runs are fun. Weak ground outs are not. But at least he’s walking.
I think they're trying to turn Reynolds into something he's not.
I posted this really late on Friday so check it out if you didn’t already and I apologize if you’ve already seen it. I mostly agree with this assessment of Reynolds.
I think Presley’s aggressive approach has had disastrous results for Reynolds and Markakis in particular.

Yeah I totally agree with that
A few weeks ago Gary Thorne was talking about how great it is that he’s cut down his K numbers, which is just ridiculous. Of course, the reasons we love Gary don’t really have anything to do with his knowledge of baseball.
Mark Reynolds is what he is, and if they are trying to change that then it’s just going to ruin him. He’s not a great baseball player and he never will be, but he has value if he can hit the way he hit in Arizona.
I don’t think it’s all bad news, though. He’s taken a lot of walks lately and has his BB% up near his career rate, so hopefully he can keep that up. And that 8.8% HR/FB is just absurd, it’ll have to go up at least somewhat. But yeah, if they keep trying to tinker with him he could be toast.
8.8% HR/FB -- B-R has it at 7.7%
But their numbers agree with you. 5 season number is 17.1% Current GO/AO is .87, 15 points over the 5 season number of .72. Reasonable to expect those numbers will flip, with more balls flying and flying out.

Reimold, huh?
He who continues to destroy AAA pitching to the tune of .245/.353/.392.
