Five Reasons the O's Will Finish Last (Again)
After barely being able to watch this weekend's clean sweep by the Rays I've come to the hard realization that this season will end like so many before it - in the basement.
I, like many of you tried to buy into the hype and take a "leap of faith" that the Orioles would improve under the all-knowing Buck. But as we slowly move into May we see the many problems that this team will have being able to compete.
1) The Starting Pitching Isn't Good Enough
I'll start with the positives. Zach Britton looks like the real deal and Jake Arrietta has proven to be a battler who may just become a professional pitcher. Jeremy Guthrie had also been very reliable but has had a few starts where his doors have been blow off. In the end he'll still be servicable.
So where does that leave the rest of the rotation? Chris Tillman doesn't throw enough strikes and Brad Bergesen had his early successes zapped by a Billy Butler line drive years ago. He doesn't change speeds besides the fact he can't/won't throw a curveball. Brian Matusz's injury didn't help matters either but he may be back by the end of May.
Hopefully the Orioles don't fall too far behind the rest of the East for his return to mean very little. At this point the options are limited but maybe both Matusz and the return of Alfredo Simon could lead to a shake up among the five. What else could they do anyway?
Is it safe to mention that the Justin Duchsherer signing was a failure yet? It would have helped to have a functioning innings eater vet presence to count on while the kids learn.
2) The Lineup is "Boom or Bust"
More bust than boom at this point. But you'd have to expect things to get better considering the veterans that are found throughout the lineup. Right? Let's hope because it can't get any worse.
Actually the current sorry state of affairs offensively shouldn't be that much of a surprise. Additions Lee and Reynolds aren't making much contact but then again neither are longtime O's Roberts and Markakis. Top to bottom the offense has been anemic with not a single .300 in the bunch.
Considering the way the roster was constructed you don't have any other chance of scoring runs other than just hitting out of your slumps. The O's don't steal bases (an understatement) and only have marginal speed as a team. Most hitters don't bunt. (Plus giving up outs when you are struggling to score makes little sense) Most hitters don't have the ability to make contact to put on a hit and run. So you're stuck with what you've got
3) The Orioles Can't Shake their Old Image
They tried early on with a sweep of the Rays but after watching Tampa get revenge in fairly easy fashion this weekend the team feels like they are back where they started.
The frustration is starting to mount among the players and it's starting to feel like business as usual around here. I've heard the talk that everyone is pressing and trying to do too much at the plate. But they still don't do the little things to win ball games. They don't hit behind runners. They don't hit with runners in scoring position. They don't work the count. And on and on.
It almost felt like that horrible late inning meltdown against the Yankees reversed any momenum they had in making progress.
The overall baseball IQ seems low. For example the Orioles threaten against the Rays young pitcher on Saturday and with the bases loaded Robert Andino is over-aggressive instead of taking at least a strike. The O's need to play the game right.
4) Bullpen Issues
For as much as we like to talk about starting pitching the bullpen has been even worse.
Consistency is key and the only thing you can count on is that this bullpen consistently makes it interesting. Only Kevin Gregg (yes that Kevin Gregg) and Koji Uehara have been able to get hitters out keeping opponents batting under .220 against them. The rest is up for grabs. Accardo and Johnson have been decent but nothing spectacular.
Then there is Michael Gonzalez. Has he finally found the right formula? Who knows? But he's another example of a relief pitcher that has been paid A LOT of money and hasn't produced enough. (Side note: Why is it the Orioles seem freer to throw money on Relief pitcher but not Starters or position players?)
I also hate the idea of having a 12 or 13 player bullpen which shortens your bench.
5) There Isn't Much Showalter Can Do
The shine has worn off of Buck's halo for sure. Fans are expecting a lineup shakeup and considering it's been over a month I'd welcome a few changes. Move Jones to 2nd, Slide Markakis to 3rd, Move Wieters up and Lee down in order. Sounds good.
But what's it really going to do? As a group they still don't get on base enough and as I said before they are primarily a station to station club. It's either hit better or go home. They don't have any options on the farm right now either. So at least for now we are status quo.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
AJ is not suited for the 2 slot while Nicky was born for it, and we’ll see that when he breaks out of this horrible slump. We know he can do it.
Arrieta is going to be very good one day (I think this year) and we’ll have a very good 1-4 while you can’t expect much from the 5 starter anywhere.
Apart from that, all I can say is – I hope.

Agree about AJ/Nicky
While AJ has a marginally better OBP today, that is way off historical norms and it’s only because Nick isn’t hitting since AJ has fewer walks. AJ has nothing like the plate discipline to hit #2. Moving Nick’s anemic slugging percentage to #3 is just plain a bad idea even if we had a credible #2 candidate.
I wish I could shine a light of hope, but the problem of no prospects on the horizon is what really hamstrings Buck. You can’t motivate better performance with the threat that someone’s going to take your job if there are no viable candidates to be that someone.
Maybe Buck will show the guys another inspiring video.

while Jones doesn’t have the same skills as Nick at the plate, I think he’s looked much better lately in terms of working the count.

True True
But that doesn’t answer who hits third. Lee isn’t getting it done there.
I know baseball isn’t about knee jerk reactions so letting things play out over a month is fine but it’s about time to make a few moves.
Jonesy has shown better plate discipline as of late plus he does possess speed which the O’s don’t have in ample supply.
It’s better than staying status quo for me at this point.

Lee will come around, he’s seeing the ball well and don’t forget that he missed ST entirely. patience and persistence is good advice in almost any situation.

Kevin Gregg holding opponents to a batting average under .220 isn't that impressive when you consider that he's pitching to a brilliant rate of 6 BB/9.
Bright Side
I wasn’t a huge fan of the Gregg signing because of the walks. You knew that when you got him.
But he was paid to close and even though he gives you a heart attack he’s 6 for 7 in save situations so far.
The results are there…for now.

2 of those "saves"
belong to Markakis and Jones/Denard Span respectively. But he has been pitching better.

And with that
Gregg blows a save last night.
So much for putting a positive spin on things.

So basically the reason the Orioles will end up in last is that their starting pitching, their bullpen, their lineup, and their coach aren’t good enough?
Brilliant insight, pause, not.
douchebag comment? pause, check.

Yep. What he said.
Read further beacause there more to it than just that.
The pitching has had it’s struggles but the starters have pitched better as whole as of late. the bullpen is still a crapshoot. The lineup is a station to station team with little speed so when they get into slumps there isn’t much they can do to manufacture runs.
I think Showalter is a great coach but he can’t do much to change things if players can’t perform. The team has pitched and hit better since my post (5-1 to be exact) and more victories are the result.
Why didn’t I post this sooner?

I think reason #1 is off base
We have plenty of great pitching for the first time in a while this year; that’s certainly not what’s holding us back. Assuming Matusz is effective when he comes back (and there’s no reason to expect he wouldn’t be), our front four will be among the deepest and best in the division. The Rays and Sox can legitimately claim to be (a little) better, but Toronto and New York are both very exposed here. It’s been ages since I expected our starter to be effective nearly every game, but that’s the deal this year. I don’t really care much what happens in the 5th starter slot, because baseball is such that the 5th guy is a crapshoot for every team.
The number one reason we’ve been sucking has been the anemic hitting. It’s a little mind-boggling how long this team-wide slump/choke has gone on. Assuming it gets anywhere close to normal in the next few weeks, I have no reason to believe we won’t finish at least in front of the Blue Jays.

I wouldn't say plenty
But I do agree that it’s best this team has had in years.
Oh what a difference a week makes. Is this the real Jake Arrieta? He been very solid and he if can continue then that gives the team a very good top three with Britton and Guthrie. Matusz is the X-Factor. If he can be productive then you’ve really got something. Of course as soon as I badmouth Tillman and Bergy they pitch well in their turns.
I had 2012 projected as the season that the starting pitching really comes into form but maybe it’s starting early.
