AL East Prospects Who Should Get the Call

Youth is being served this baseball season. We’ve seen many organizations forgo their plans of waiting out prospects and getting them up to the bigs earlier then first speculated. Names Such as Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakis, Danny Duffy, Anthony Rizzo, Charlie Blackmon, Domonic Brown, Dee Gordon, Jerry Sands, etc. have gotten their tickets to the show. While a lot of big names have already surfaced, I would like to look at the next in line to be called up for each team. While defense is an important metric in determining a prospects worth, I am strictly using the standard 5x5 fantasy format(Batting Average, Homeruns, RBI, Runs, Stolen Bases x ERA, WHIP, Wins, Saves, K) when evaluating. These are my opinions on who SHOULD get the call and not on who will get the call.

Baltimore Orioles: Cole McCurry (Age 25) AA/AAA RP 4-0 0.72ERA 0.913WHIP 47K in 37.2inn

Baltimore has stockpiled young arms in recent years either through the draft or via trade. They seem to be following the same rebuilding plan as the Rays. Jake Arrieta, Brian Matusz, Chris Tillman, Zach Britton and to a lesser extent Brad Bergesen are the future arms of the O’s. But Cole McCurry is making his case to be included in that group. He wasn’t a highly touted rookie, getting drafted in the 43rd rd in 07’ out of Tennessee Wesleyan. He hadn’t done much prior to this season (Best year was 09 in A ball going 6-9 w/ a 2.71ERA, 1.178WHIP and 145K in 139.2inn). But he has been lights out in every outing this year, only yielding 4 runs in 33.2 innings at AA and yet to give up a run in AAA. If he continues to pitch this well, the rebuilding O’s will have no choice but to give him a chance.
