Alfredo Simon activated from DL; Clay Rapada DFA'd
The Orioles announced that lefty Clay Rapada has been DFA'd. If he clears waivers he'll head to Norfolk. The Saucy One will replace him.
From the press release:
The Orioles announced today that they have reinstated RHP ALFREDO SIMON from the 15-day disabled list, where he was placed retroactive to June 13 with a right hamstring strain. To open up a spot for him on the 25-man roster, LHP CLAY RAPADA has been designated for assignment.
Simon has appeared in five games for the Orioles this season, going 1-1 with a 3.14 ERA (14.1IP, 5ER). He pitched 3.0 innings or more in each of his last three outings.
Rapada appeared in 22 games for the Orioles, pitching to a 7.30 ERA (12.1IP, 10ER). He held left-handers to a .114 average (4-35) but allowed right-handers to hit .692 (9-13) against him.
Rapada has had his troubles in the bullpen, but when restricted to only facing lefties he had done pretty well. Left-handed batters went 4-for-35 against Rapada with only one home run and no doubles. It's no big loss, really, but I was expecting to see Berken or Bergesen sent back down.

This doesn't seem very smart.
Rapada did fine as a LOOGY. I suppose Jason Berken can get lefties out from now on.

Mike Gonzalez has some pretty decent splits
maybe we can move him into the LOOGY role. At the very least it will get him away from pitching to multiple batters.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
I thought the same thing
except if you use Gonzo as a LOOGY – which you should because he sucks against righties – then he still wouldn’t be as good as using Rapada in that exact same role.
Kevin Gregg is ruining everything I love about baseball, he really is.
I totally agree with you.
But I think, given the DFA decision has already been made, moving Gonzo to the LOOGY role would allow them to keep using him (you know, because the O’s love to use people simply because they owe them a lot of $) without exposing him to a full inning of work.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
Except
Maybe they’ve got more of a chance of getting something for Clay over the next 10 days? Not sure who has more (or less) value, but Gonzos silly-ass contract probably squashes any possible trade and he just gets picked up on waivers. Gotta believe Clay will get picked up too if they can’t work a deal.

we're not getting anything for any of these guys

I think any LOOGy should be expendable by definition
If you’re not capable enough to pitch a single inning, you really shouldn’t be on a major league roster. You’re just filling space for lack of someone incrementally less useless than you are. I think the FO just figured Berken was capable of producing that increment.
Like a bad, suave dude. You know what I'm sayin'. COOL. SC 7/24/08
