Sweep and Sell
The Orioles need to sweep this 3 game series against the Red Sox opening tonight at OPACY. Boston is starting the back end of their rotation - Wakefield, Weiland, Miller - and will be without the services of David "he who doesn't appreciate being pitched inside even though anyone rarely does" Ortiz. Then, after improving the season record to 41-54, the Orioles need to trade away all assets. Guerrero, Lee, Scott (shoulder pending), and Guthrie should all be with a contender come August/September. And while we're at it, maybe Nick Markakis should go to.
Think about it, the reigning AL Player of the Week will never have a higher value. For years now Markakis has represented the cornerstone of the rebuilding project in Baltimore. Well guess what, after all that and then some the O's are still in last place. Maybe it's time to plan ahead for when the realignment gods will make it so the Birds aren't forced to play the Red Sox and Yankees 18 times a season. Until then, forecast in Baltimore remains hot/humid w/ chance of thundershowers.

i'm all for trading kakes if
1) we can get value in return—i don’t wanna trade him for a bag of magic beans
2) we can find someone willing to take on that contract, cause let’s face it, he’s not likely worth it
i expect him to stay, because i don’t think we’d find someone willing to meet those criteria even IF we were looking to trade him (which i doubt)
Maybe magic beans would help grow the arms?
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Markakis is better than either Ryan Ludwick or Colby Rasmus
Slim pickings for those contenders in the market for a corner OF (Giants, Tigers, etc). In my humble opinion the Orioles should market Markakis as an alternative to the current Carlos Beltran sweepstakes. Send him to the Giants in a package deal w/ DLee for one of their young major league ready pitchers or Brandon Belt and a magic bag of beans. I don’t know about you but beans certainly make me throw gas.
I don't think I can emphasize this enough
BUY. THE. ARMS!!! Good arms in their prime. How the hell do you think Philly got to be a good team? Open your wallet, Peter and spend, you can afford it. You make more off of MASN than I’ll see in a thousand years.
That's a terrible idea.
Don’t go around buying whatever arms you can. Pitchers vary so much in their performance, it’d be a terrible investment.
So much for the sweep....
should still sell however because the Orioles are about one more 15-10 final away from bringing Tippy Martinez out of retirement.
As logical as you can make it sound..
the front office will not give up on a 5 year rebuilding process after a bad 6 week stretch. Be patient people.

No it's not
I think the pitching plan for next year should be:
New #1 pitcher gained from FA, Matusz, Tillman, Britton, Arrieta
Hitting should be:
Roberts 2B (If he’s healthy) (If not, then bump up Hardy and place 2B in 9th)
Markakis (RF)
Hardy (SS)
Jones (CF)
Wieters ©
Riemold (1B)
Free agent LF
Reynolds (DH)
Free agent 3B
A new closer, maybe move Arrieta there.

Nice...
An actual plan. I think this makes sense. A few howevers…
Depending on Roberts at 2B is doubtful. I think he is a great player, but fragile as glass. I think he needs to really come out of the plan.
Reimold at first is an interesting idea, but why not leave him in the OF and bring on a more traditional mashing 1B man? I guess it is what is available, but LOOK AT THE FREE AGENT MARKET.

That is a glut of 1B talent, and it may bring down the price on a few bats listed there. Who wants Pujols, raise your hand? you might get Lee back for a bunch less. There is much less FA talent in the outfield.
Let Vlad vanish, let Koji go, let Gonzalez go, trade Scott for what you can get. Trade Guthrie. Maybe between them you can find a solution for one of the holes.
Closing… I would look to an arm we already have. Radical, I know. The problem with closers is: they cost a lot and they fail a lot. Closer by committee is never very good. On the other hand, starters converted to closers often works. Have ALL the minor league arms do a cameo in the minors to see who can handle it. Situate two as the setup and closer.
Starter… One of these consistent performers… Two would take the pressure off…

Why is Ortiz on a list of 1B?
He hasn’t spent a decent amount of time in the field since ‘04, and even then it was for 30 games. No way do I want him as a starting 1B for the whole season. Also, DLee is not exactly what I would call a talent, especially if you’re talking about a ‘masher’.
Koji is probably coming back due to his option.
Of those 5 pitchers, I don’t want any part of Edwin Jackson. I’ve seen him pitch twice in person, and from what I’ve seen (SSS), he’s impossibly wild. We have enough pitchers with control issues. I don’t know much about Maholm, but any of the other 3 would likely be sufficient to replace Guts, although likely expensive and a bit old.

SSS... edwin jackson is actually having a decent year
despite a too-high WHIP. his walk percentage is not far-off Guts’. not a great pitcher, but could certainly do worse. Oswalt is the oldest here, and he’ll be 34. Guts is 32, CJ Wilson (the one I most want) will be 31.
Closer by committee is never very good.
Closer by committee is never good because its never properly implemented. The only time you ever see a team fess up to having ‘closer by committee’ is when they don’t have any good relievers and are going to rotate them through and hope something sticks. If a team actually said they’re going to do it and mean they’ll use their best relievers in the most important spots rather than always saving one guy for the 9th inning, then it would be very very good.
I for once would like a manager to come out...
and say “look, I’m not going to manage my bullpen differently because of the save rule”. If Koji owns the guys due up, bring Koji in. If JJ is going well, then let him pitch the eight and the ninth. It isn’t that hard.

Thats exactly what Buck said
Now we just need a manager to come out and actually do it instead of just looking for a sound bite that MASN can taunt us with every time Kevin Gregg blows a game.
See there I go again..
maybe I would have a better memory of Buck saying that exact thing if he actually managed that way?

Not sure I like Jones at cleanup either.
