The Lee Trade
Derek Lee goes away from the Orioles for minor league first baseman Aaron Baker.
Baltimore said the 23-year-old Baker will be assigned to Class-A Frederick. Baker batted .285/.353/.474 with 21 doubles, 15 home runs and 72 RBI in 102 games for Single-A Bradenton this season. He was selected by Pittsburgh in the 11th round of the 2009 draft. He is a .263 career hitter in 289 minor league games. He was not in the top 30 preseason-ranked pirate prospects.
Perhaps they were looking for more opportunities for player development? With Chris Davis as a virtual unknown at the major league level (that is, unable to translate minor-league success to the majors), are the Os hedging bets?
The only thing that I think is less than happy about this outlook is that with the huge free-agent opportunity for 1B this year, that Baltimore is packing in 1B potential, suggesting they will not be participating in the free-agent bidding at 1B. Snyder, Mahoney, Baker, Davis... What is the best-case scenario...

There's no "None of the above" option, so I abstain
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the Orioles' season?

Townsend is better than the four choices
Snyder and Mahoney are smoke and mirrors. Baker looks like organization filler. Davis has the potential to be another Mark Reynolds? Wade Townsend can mash if he can stay healthy. (big if)

I wish people would stop saying this
Chris Davis strikes out a lot. So does Mark Reynolds. Chris Davis has a lot of power. So does Mark Reynolds.
But Chris Davis has a 6.7% walk rate in over 950 major league plate appearances. Chris Davis is no Mark Reynolds.

Face it, we won't get Prince Fielder
I think the only way we can is to convince Andy MacPhail that it’s really Cecil Fielder, that way he’ll overpay him, since MacPhail obviously hasn’t picked up a copy of Sports Illustrated in the last ten years.
good trade
baker is a very fringy prospect, but the fact that andy was even able to land a prospect for lee is good.

nothing against Lee personally, but I kind of hope he tanks in the second half and the Pirates finish under .500 again.

Koji, otoh, i would love to see succeed in TX
eyup, hope he gets a ring. he was a warrior on the mound when he had every reason not to be. that presser sealed it for me, I’m taking my “あなたに麹を感謝” sign to the next Texas series. and cheering my ass off for him.
