From the O's Insider piece
Connolly writes:
And they sent first baseman Derrek Lee, 35, and some potential cash (probably between $500,000 and $1.75 million depending on how many plate appearances Lee ends up with) to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Class A first baseman Aaron Baker, 23.
We’re still paying for the plate appearances? I thought that was the main reason to get rid of him, to get out of that obligation when it wasn’t returning any value. Why is paying that money to have Aaron Baker better than DFA’ing Lee?

maybe there was an acceleration clause

then it was a sunk cost & I'd be OK with the deal again

Do you think a clause like that would be listed on Cot's Contracts?

No, and i doubt its the case
but there are likely contract details in general that we can never know about without seeing the contract itself
Well, we save about $2 million in not having to pay the rest of his base salary, so it was still a good deal.
Although practically the only effect is that offset the money we sent to Texas for Koji.

This is why MacPhail will never succeed here
He indicated he got plenty of calls about Jeremy Guthrie, but needed pitching back to part with the right-hander. He also revealed that a player like Adam Jones could have brought a good haul in return, but he was not willing to part with Jones right now.
Why wouldn’t you sell high on AJ? I might be wrong, I hope I am, but it looks like Adam has peaked. He’s a good, even very good player, but no longer a cornerstone.
Again, I hope I’m wrong, but this seems like the perfect opportunity to sell a good player as if he was a great player and stock the minors.
"Baseball is an island of activity in a sea of statistics." - Anon
As far as Guts is concerned, I think they absolutely needed a pitching prospect in return.
We’ve got zero pitching on this team and with Matusz/Britton struggling, its only going to get worse.
I don’t have much tolerance for stupid. Or cheese on food that doesn’t need it. -duck
I was actually talking about the AJ part more
"Baseball is an island of activity in a sea of statistics." - Anon
I think the trade market is like the draft
you get the best players available instead of focusing on one specific need.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the Orioles' season?
But with the draft you're only adding talent.
By trading, you’re creating a need in the system by sending players and you have to address that need as well. If there’s no intra- organizational solution, you have to get something back that will fill that need.
"Baseball is an island of activity in a sea of statistics." - Anon
you still dont want to
pass on a really good positional package in order to get a lesser pitcher package because you’re that dedicated to getting pitching.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the Orioles' season?
But that's not what AMP was talking about
He wanted a major league ready pitcher to take Guts’ spot in the rotation immediately, which is absolutely ridiculous because if the trading partner had that to spare they wouldn’t need Guts (as was pointed out earlier on here).
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
I thought briefly that the addition of Tommy Hunter could fill that gap for the warehouse
but I guess they aren’t that silly
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the Orioles' season?
I don't even know what to think anymore
I think I either want to have a firesale (sell everyone except Wieters and Britton), or to do nothing and keep this group of guys together and hope they can all take steps forward next year. Selling Guts and Jones for 2-4 prospects and then doing nothing else for the farm system is a band-aid for a bullet wound, because I’m sure MacPhail would just stop there and then we’d be waiting on Machado, Bundy, and 2 other prospects for the next 3 years instead of just Machado and Bundy.

MacPhail won't be waiting for anyone after this season.
"Baseball is an island of activity in a sea of statistics." - Anon
The O's are trying to duct tape a 2012 season together for 81 wins
MacPhail valued the major league ready aspects of Hunter and Davis. I’m not holding my breath they’ll be ready to play in the AL East. Guthrie is still here to go for 81 wins in 2012. Ditto for Jones.
None of it matters if Britton and Matusz continue to suck. Seems to me MacPhail and crew are hoping those two turn it around and 81 wins is the goal. It’s an easier sell than telling Angelos the team needs to continue to stock the minors by selling some established players. Angelos doesn’t seem to want to invest in the minor league. I’m already wondering what duct tape free agents the O’s will go for in the off season.

We’ll pay Derrek Lee’s salary in return for a single-A first baseman and then sent our only real trade chip for two fringe major-leaguers who likely provide nothing to the team.

From the Fangraphs article on the "Should Have Done More" clubs
#12 – Baltimore Orioles
Getting rid of Derrek Lee was great, as Aaron Baker will do more for the Orioles than Lee did, even if he stinks in, or never makes it to, the majors. They shouldn’t have been expected to deal Vladimir Guerrero, as his injury and suckitude sapped any potential trade value. But Jeremy Guthrie stayed put despite rampant rumors that he would be dealt. It’s hard to fathom why he wasn’t dealt.
Sure, the sudden emergence of Ubaldo Jimenez as an available trade target changed the landscape of the starting pitching market, but teams will pay more for 1+ years of a starter than one or fewer years. Given the state of the Orioles organization, any reasonable offer for their de facto ace would have greatly improved the system. Guthrie will probably be dealt in the offseason, or by next year’s deadline, but the Orioles could have extracted a better return now, when he can impact one more playoff race.
Why do you have to be outside the Orioles organization to understand the state of the Orioles organization?

so then Bell at 3B?
from what it sounds like with Davis and what Bell looked like at the end of last year there’s not much of a difference offensively, and Bell wasn’t too great with the glove either. So no real obvious solution.
well, in a way, i dont care who plays 3b right now
just not reynolds. He would probably still be an above average 1b offensively. If he is competent on defense there, he would have more value to us than as a DH.
Hardy at third next year, Machado at SS

So i'm going to a Hudson Valley Renegades (TB-A) game against the Ironbirds this weekend
We rented the owners box. 200 bucks for 4 people, and it comes with:
Video Board and P.A. Recognition
(4) Renegades Hats and T-Shirts
(8) Hot Dogs
(4) Bags of Peanuts
(4) Bags of Popcorn
(4) Large Sodas
(4) Domestic Beers
AND one of us (read: me) gets to throw out the first pitch. How fucking awesome of a deal is that for 50 bucks each?!

JK, that sounds like a pretty sweet deal. The Keys have something similar for $32 a person but doesn’t include the opening pitch thing.

on the other hand,
that’s perfect timing to take that time off. You had shit scheduled before your new job. Once you’re established, it’s harder to get that time off.
My company has had some pretty stupid vacation policies (no more than a week off at a time), but it’s always the new people who get to ignore that, because they planned on backpacking in europe for a month or some shit before they had the job.
Yea, that would have worked if I mentioned it when I started
and honestly this place is super cool with time off. I just think that would be the worst possible time to ask to leave early.

Just another operation :)
Think about it – Neither helicopter lands in its planned area, one is downed due to unforeseen environmental factors and the other lands outside the compound.
And yet within 18 minutes they’ve blown through multiple steel doors, accessed the building at different entrances than planned, eliminated three hostile males, searched the entire house, neutralized three unarmed females without killing any of them, and identified and killed their main target. All within 18 minutes. About the time it takes the Yankees and the Red Sox to play one inning in an average Sunday night game.

The Weaver-Guillen altercation was hilarious.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hitter rub it in so bad after a HR or non that I can recall. Anyone?
Yeah that was pretty awful

I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8

You know what was worse than that?
Verlander complaining about the bunt single that broke up his no hitter. It was a 3 run game and the Angels are in a playoff race. It worked too.
"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
Yeah, I think it's lame to complain about that, but people have always done that.
But I agree, in a close game it’s completely legit. If it was 12-0 and they were bunting then I’d probably bean guys until I got tossed.
by Wieters Wieners on Aug 1, 2011 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions
It was an error and didn't impact the no-no
and I thought his quote was pretty reasonable – he said he could see both sides that it was a close game and a baserunner matters, but that from a pitcher’s perspective it’s sort of bush league.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Oh yea, forgot it was an error
but the “bush lleague” thing was insane. They are trying to win a close meaningful game. Get over yourself. The other team doesn’t have to lay down so you can earn yourself another line in the history books.
"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
Eh
like I said in the other thread, if you could get an honest answer out of the Angels not a single player over there would tell you that going for a bunt single gave them a better chance of winning that game and the primary purpose was to break up the no-hitter.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
I should say
to break up the no-hitter and/or fuck with Verlander in the process.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
I can see both sides here
Yeah they are trying to win the game, but bunting there is just going outside of your normal process of trying to win the game and more just trying to not get “no-hit”. I think we all agree that the best way to dig your way out of a 3-0 hole is not bunting.
by Wieters Wieners on Aug 1, 2011 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions
getting on base doesn't improve your chances of winning the game?
breaking up the no no may be part of the reason behind the bunt, but aybar is speed guy who bunts anyways. take away the no no and it’s still a legit way to win the game.
The Andy MacPhail plan: "Grow nothing. Buy the pen," (Wieters Weiner 2011).
Does bunting give them the best chance of getting on base???
The vast majority of bunts are outs and if Verlander threw cleanly Aybar is out by 7 feet.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
That's what I'm saying
Bunting is clearly not the best way to go about winning the ballgame there.
by Wieters Wieners on Aug 1, 2011 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Although if I'm reading the baseball ref stats correctly
Aybar does have a higher OBP on bunt attempts (.333 7 for 21 attempts) than overall (.317). Pretty small sample size, but who knows.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
yeah, that's really my only point
it’s not like it’s vlad guerrero up there bunting. aybar is actually known for bunting and is “good” at it.
The Andy MacPhail plan: "Grow nothing. Buy the pen," (Wieters Weiner 2011).
Plus, its not like they were getting on base via any other means.
The bunt was probably worth the try, especially when the game wasn’t nearly out of reach. Had it been 7-0 or something, it’d be a different story.
I don’t have much tolerance for stupid. Or cheese on food that doesn’t need it. -duck
Yeah
I just don’t think that was the true motivation – I think it was more to fuck with Verlander and that’s when it gets bush league in my opinion. Hard to know for sure though.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
I think it had multiple purposes, win the game and disrupt Verlander.
The Andy MacPhail plan: "Grow nothing. Buy the pen," (Wieters Weiner 2011).
But regardless
I don’t see how anybody can complain about Verlander’s reaction to it. He didn’t hit anybody or throw at anybody. He just said that he can see both sides, but from a pitcher’s perspective it’s a little bush league.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Yeah
People can say his reaction was lame, but he truly didn’t even make a big deal about it and this is something that people have been split on for a long time. I don’t think his reaction was that bad. I mean, he’s a pitcher, that was his pitcher take on it. I’m sure 95% of MLB pitchers agree with him.

Weaver got pissy earlier in the game on a ball Magglio hit down the line that he waited to see if it was going foul. It was a little ridic on Weaver’s part. Then Guillen just held the bat out and side trotted down the first base line pretty much flexing at Weaver.
Both benches were warned followed by the next pitch being a head shot at the next batter.
Then Verlander got pissy when they tried to break up the no-no with a bunt.
by Wieters Wieners on Aug 1, 2011 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

It looked like every other ridiculous homerun trot that he’s done over the course of his career to me.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
By the way
I liked everyone’s swag involved. Again, everything hinges on weather Mags truly started it or if Weaver was being over-sensitive. I honestly thought he was just waiting to see fair/foul. But regardless, I like a little spunk in baseball. Weaver was at like 111 pitches anyway when he got tossed so he really didn’t have anything to lose there.

But there are plenty of situations to usually pick from. If one team is leading by a few runs or more, or with 2 outs and no one on isn’t a bad time. Around the minors 8-1:
Norfolk lost to Columbus 8-7. Ryan Adams went 3-5 with a double and a homer. Jake Fox went 1-5 with a K.
The Baysox and the Keys were off today.
Delmarva beat Lakewood 4-0. Ty Kelly went 2-3 with a walk. Michael Ohlman went 1-4 with 2 Ks. David Baker had another nice start, going 6.1 scoreless, striking 4, walking 4 and allowing 4 hits with a GB/FB of 6/5. Randy Henry went 1.2 innings, striking out 1.
Aberdeen lost to Mahoning Valley 14-3. Matt Hobgood gave up 9 earned runs in 2.2 innings on 8 hits (1 homer) and 2 walks. He struck out 2, with a GB/FB of 6/0. So that sucks. Glynn Davis went 0-4. Joe Velleggia went 0-4 with a K. Wynston Sawyer went 1-3 with a single. Mychal Givens went 1-4 with a double. Connor Narron went 0-2 with a walk and a K. Though his batting average is .217, his OBP is .367.
The GCL Orioles beat the GCL Red Sox 9-1. Miguel Chalas went 5 innings, giving up 1 earned run on 6 hits. He struck out 3 and walked none with a GB/FB of 8/1. Rod Bernadina DNP again, so it looks like he is injured. Hopefully it’s not too serious.
The DSL Orioles beat the DSL Cubs1 5-2. Byron Capellan went 1-5 with a K. Hector Veloz went 1-2 with 2 walks and committed his 15th error. 19 year old Alexander Mercedes continues to play well, batting .328 on the season, with a .419 OBP and a 443 SLG, with 16 SB in 50 games (8 CS as well). For as much guff as I give the Orioles international “efforts” there do seem to be a fair number of interesting kids from Latin America.
