Group Therapy: Let's pat ourselves on the back and encourage each other

The Orioles suck. I am 21 now. They have sucked since I was 7. None of this is news. Today was another instance of Orioles tragic. 5-0 becomes 6-5 pretty quickly when you are a terrible franchise. The point I am getting at this, is relish it. We are awful, I buy LF upper bleacher seats and I have sat 5-10 rows behind 3B 15-20 games a year for 6-7 years now. If we are able to still continue blogging about the Orioles as they go on pace for 100 losses. It is difficult being an O's fan and we all know this, I just want to give everyone a pat on the back and know that if you are a frequent blogger, if you still can watch 10 games a month of this atrocious franchise you da man/woman. Congrats guys you are a true fan. Now ten, thirty, fifty years from now when the orioles are mildly successful, please don't let our fanbase become like the pink hat nation up north. Remember these days, cherish them.

re:

Perhaps we have to accept the O’s as you do a buddy who’s down on his luck and share in the misery.

No one wants to share beers with the guy who’s life is all peachy keen and looking nowhere but up. He’s about to graduate and take a six figure starting position. His girl friend is actually quite cute and the wedding plans are formulating. His concerns are what neighborhood to buy into, what type of automobile to upgrade to, and how to invest his in the company provided 401K. The net result is he’s the bore of any outing. Soon enough, he’ll stop attending anyhow as the future plans take priority, and no one will go much out of their way to invite him.

Admit it, we like the guy who just failed his written exams and his future just became muddier. His junker just blew something or other and he fears he’s facing an expensive repair that he’ll struggle to afford. His lease is about to expire he’s wondering where to live assuming he has no car. To add a little more spice, he had a doozy of a breakup with the last girlfriend, which even though it was nine months ago, the topic of how she thoroughly used him still provides plenty of discussion. But deep down, he’s a good guy and is struggling to make a go of it. Sort of like you, but even more down on his luck. He’s the guy we all enjoy having a beer with.

However, the more I think about it, perhaps he [the O’s] isn’t really such a swell guy nor is he really trying all that hard to better his lot in life. Perhaps he’s more like the flunky parasitic family member always looking for a handout. You have to accept him to some degree, as he is blood, but you plead with him to straighten out his act. It falls on deaf ears, and only your mother seems to have some faith that he’ll get his life in order. She prays for him every day. You just try to avoid him, but you can’t quite completely turn that full 180 degrees away from him.

The Orioles are your buddy whose parents died in college and left him a small fortune.

He was a great guy when you were younger. He had more money than everybody, but he treated his friends well, and always let you ride in his cool car, and hang out with the hot chicks that were attracted to his wallet.

Now, he’s still got some cash, but he doesn’t know what to do with it. He made terrible investment decisions, like buying into the Pets.com IPO after that Superbowl commercial in 2000, and falling in love with ‘Flip This House’ in early 2008. He still drives the ‘97 Z3 his parents bought him for his 16th birthday, man can you remember the good times you guys had that summer. He still lives in his parents house they had custom built in 1992. All the neighbors were jealous and modeled their homes around it, but they never lived up to the original. You threw some massive parties in there in high school, everybody came; you learned about love in the guest house. Now, you come by every so often to check on him, see how he’s doing, have a couple of beers and reminisce about old times. The crowds are gone; the parties are over, but you still see that great guy in there, struggling but waiting to spring back to life.

He’s got baggage, he’s got issues, but he is still your boy. The money is dwindling, the success is long gone, but he’s still young. There is a future and the pedigree is there for him to make his own way, and take this world by the horns. And you’ll be there for him every step of the way; whether he ends up successful; or dies penniless, sleeping on your couch, your wife nagging you all the while to kick the bum to the curve and stop spending so much time, effort and emotion on a lost cause.

I’ve said this before, but you watch the young guys to find meaning in the games. You watch Adam Jones, Chris Davis, Matt Wieters, Chris Tillman, and Tommy Hunter because all of them are 25 or younger who are under control for multiple seasons. I would add Arrieta and Matusz but obviously they’re not with the big club now. And Nolan Reimold is 27 but he should be considered part of the list above. I really don’t watch games anymore. I watch the ABs of the above guys and starts by Tillman and Hunter. If the team is ever going to competent soon, it’ll be on the backs of these guys. If you want hope, watch these guys, and more importantly, read dfa’s minor league summary every morning.

Personally

I extract satisfaction from beating teams in pennant races (the few times that we do), because that’s really the closest we come to being in important games. And I obviously also watch it for the young guys, see if they’re developing.

All the other teams I find myself rooting for in baseball are, or have been in similar predicaments to what the Orioles are in right now. That means I enjoy watching the Reds, Brewers, Royals and Pirates, and when they win, it feels hopeful for the Orioles.

Of course, but that shit ain’t happening now. I’m talking about the present day. It’s about taking a small amount of enjoy from watching Tommy Hunter rock and roll over the A’s and hoping he can continue doing that the next 3-4 seasons.

This
We are awful, I buy LF upper bleacher seats and I have sat 5-10 rows behind 3B 15-20 games a year for 6-7 years now.

Is one of the main pleasures I get from being an O’s fan at this moment. As long as we suck, I know that at any time I can get some cheap/free tickets and have some premium seats and enjoy a major league baseball game. I think we are extremely fortunate that we got our new stadium when we did, before this horrible trend of luxury seats and high priced boxes started coming into fruition. Of course I’d much rather have a winning team and have to pay a little extra, but for now this is what I will be happy with.

Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless - like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

Nice to see that people still care

I just wish Peter Angelos would feel the same way.
