Monday Bird Droppings
Steve Melewski: A quick update on the Orioles draft situation - MASN
"The deadline to sign picks is midnight on Monday and it appears that negotiations with O's top pick Dylan Bundy are likely to go into tomorrow and perhaps down to those final hours."
All Bundy, all the time - baltimoresun.com
"The story of the day for the Orioles will play out far away from Oakland, where the big league team opens a three-game series against the Athletics tonight. Back in Baltimore, Director of Amateur Scouting Joe Jordan will be on the phone, trying to hammer out a deal with top draft pick Dylan Bundy before tonight’s midnight deadline."
Guthrie not worried about 20-loss season - Carroll County Times: Orioles
"Jeremy Guthrie is a loss leader, and he's not happy about it. Guthrie lost his 16th game, most in the majors, on Saturday, and with perhaps eight starts remaining he could become the first 20-game loser since Detroit's Mike Maroth dropped 21 in 2003."
Brian Roberts deserves better from the fans | Roar From 34
Lesson learned? Never read the comments sections on The Sun.
One Lucky Fan - Baltimore magazine
"It’s every baseball fan’s dream, to catch a home-run ball. For Orioles fan Tim Anderson, this dream became a reality not just once, but on three different occasions. It just so happens that these three occasions took place over the course of three days, during this week’s series against the Chicago White Sox."

Kevin Gregg is just simply put The Worst
I turned the game on right when he came in. That was pathetic even by his standards. I have never disliked watching a single player more in my life.

and here's a fun fact re: Gregg sticking around past his contract
“He’s made an adjustment in his delivery after watching film of Kevin Gregg and talking to the veteran closer, who’s been a mentor of sorts to the young pitchers.”
That’s from a Roch post about Bergesen today. Maybe this is why all the young guys have dropped off a cliff this year.

he has a vesting option for 2013
at 50 games finished this year or 100 between this year and next. He presently has 36 GF.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the Orioles' season?
Wait...he's on a two year deal?

Don't you know he once saved 17 games in a row?
When you have a chance to lock up a player like that, you don’t screw around with one year deals.

2 year deals for relievers

"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
you're missing the point
in a big way, Gregg melting down yesterday was a good thing, because if he hadn’t he’d have 37 games finished this morning. And since I’m worried about him finishing any games next year (like the Orioles are going to not use Papelbon or K-Rod as the strict closer, after they signed one of them to that big 5 year contract), it’s pretty important to my psyche as an O’s fan to see Kevin Gregg not finish 14 more games this season.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the Orioles' season?
Not sure I understand what you're responding to.
I thought his deal was 1 year with a vesting option and that he’d be gone at the end of the year and we’d never have to see him again.

The option vests with 50 GF in 2012 or 100 GF in 2011-2012.
So if they sign another shiny closer for next year, we’re probably saved from having the Gregg option vest.
Of course, there’s the possibility that other contract will be worse, but…

This year is not 2012.
Where are you getting that the option vests with 50 GF in 2011? That is not what it says on Cot’s Contracts.
I would totally believe we could have him end up finishing 50 games next year and have that option vest. That would suck. The Orioles are that ridiculous, alas.

I heard an interview Jim Callis on XM yesterday. He’s really good. Apparently, he’s expecting the Jays to bust the record for money spent on bonuses for this year’s draft. According to him, the Jays’ philosophy is take the best buy regardless of rumored price tag. I wish the O’s would do that.
The Andy MacPhail plan: "Grow nothing. Buy the pen," (Wieters Weiner 2011).
Seriously...
I had to listen to DC radio today talk all about the Nationals’ draft progress this year and how they were probably going to pay the overslot money to Matt Purke and it just made me so very sad to realize that they might possibly lock up a guy in the third round that would have probably been a possible top 3 pick next year. Why does Joe Jordan and either of the Suckstill bros. still have a job?

So the one question not yet
asked of the Orioles fan who caught a home run ball in 3 consecutive Oriole games is “Why are you going to 3 consecutive Oriole games?” Must be youth and not having your “Oriole life” sucked out of him yet. Give it time and 5 straight non 70 win season under the mantra of getting better.
Little frustrated today. I blame Gregg for this.

I think they have to be Cubs who came into the organization while AM was there.
Soriano was a signing after AM’s tenure, I believe. Plus, he’s not a failed prospect, just a failed FA signing. It’s the failed Cubs prospects that Andy really loves.

We get a treat this year – two west coast O’s / A’s series this year instead of one. Late games, loud drumming, the chance to get swept again by the A’s, and the unholy Coliseum itself. Naturally I got tickets. Anyone else out here going tonight?
I'm going to either the Sunday or Saturday game in Anaheim.
I might want to see the Dodgers too. I keep trying to tell my brother that the Orioles suck.

"the secret to a happy ending is knowing when to roll the credits"
Some notes on defense:
I found this article on Peter Bourjos on Beyond the Box Score, and while it’s interesting by itself, a couple of relevant things for us O’s fans:
We asked one longtime major league scout to rate Bourjos and give us a comparable player historically. On the scout’s 20-to-80 scale, he rated Bourjos’ glove an 80 and said Bourjos’ skill reminded him of Paul Blair, who won eight Gold Gloves in a nine-year span as a center fielder for the Orioles from 1967 to 1975.
Yet another guy I wish I’d gotten to see play.
They have "video scouts" tracking every play of every game, grouping plays into 30-plus categories of Good Fielding Plays (think of those as Web Gem nominees) and 50-plus categories of Defensive Misplays & Errors (things such as slipping and falling, colliding with a teammate, overthrowing a cutoff man).
If that bit comes into play for the rPM portion of DRS, rather than the rARM portion, then I bet that alone explains much of Adam’s ever-worsening DRS.
"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver
Actually,
from reading the article again, it sounds like the Plus-Minus and Good Play / Misplay systems are two separate things. Oh well.
"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver
I can clarify a little bit for you
+/- is strictly “did you make this play or not, and what percentage of players at your position did make this exact play?”. It doesn’t care how you made or didn’t make the play, or why you did or did not make the play, it just cares that the play was made.
Good fielding plays and defensive misplays are a separate thing entirely, sort of the BIS version of errors and the non-existent opposite of errors.
Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the Orioles' season?
Ah, thanks.
I really need to pick up a Fielding Bible one of these days so I understand it better.
"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver
Isn't there a +/- implied good vs bad play system.
As in, highest and lowest percentage plays that a player doesn’t make and makes
(respectively) are regarded as his good or bad plays. What’s that called? I’m positive I’ve read about it somewhere.
Just because you know how to read, doesn't mean you'll like the book.

Fangraphs did their periodical "leaderboards of pleasure"
Three whole major league teams ranked as less watchable than us (The A’s, Mariners and Twins)
We had no players fall in the most or least watchable lists (no Vlad? no Gregg? wouldn’t have guessed that), though we did have one in the “most overrated” list: Mark Reynolds, whose entire stash of SABR goodwill from his unimportantly low batting average is blown by his historically bad defense.
