Felix Pie DFA'd; Matt Angle called up
From the Orioles press release:
The Orioles today announced that they have recalled OF MATT ANGLE from Triple-A Norfolk and selected the contract of CA/INF JAKE FOX from the Tides. To make room for Fox on the 40-man roster, OF FELIX PIE has been designated for assignment.
Angle, 25, batted .272 (115-423) in 107 games for Norfolk this season. His 27 stolen bases led the Tides and ranked third in the International League. Angle made his major league debut with the Orioles on July 17 and was hitless in two games (0-for-7) for Baltimore.
Fox, 29, batted .274 (72-263) with 12 home runs and a team-leading 57 RBI in 67 games for the Tides this season. He hit .188 (9-48) with two home runs and four RBI in 19 games with the Orioles earlier this year. In 185 major league games over parts of four seasons with the Chicago Cubs, Oakland and Orioles, Fox has batted .231 (110-476) with 20 home runs and 71 RBI.
Pie, 26, hit .220 (36-164) with seven RBI in 85 games for the Orioles. In 268 games for Baltimore over the last three seasons, he batted .259 (182-704) with 14 home runs and 67 RBI
Not that Matt Angle is any great shakes, but maybe he won't fall on his face in the outfield. No one loved Felix Pie more than me during his time in Baltimore, but this is a welcome move. Pie had no value to this team.
Of course, if he passes through waivers he'll go to Norfolk. At this point, I'd say that's highly likely. I can't think of one team that could possibly use him on their major league roster.
Jake Fox will be occupying the roster spot previously held by Blake Davis.
Bye, Felix (at least for now). I really wish you could have been a better baseball player.

It's about !@#$ing time!!
I think that earthquake today might have been caused by Felix Pie falling on his ass in left field again.
Let the Matt Angle era begin...
maybe they could be move Jones to LF, but that might be asking for too much. I wouldn’t want another earthquake
at first blush
I was going to say that Matt Angle is the new Ken Gerhart. But then I looked up Ken Gerhart’s minor-league numbers and realized that Gerhart was roughly 20 times the hitter Angle is.
So, um, I’m stuck for a comp. Perhaps a slower Curtis Goodwin?

Angle's better than Goodwin
but at a certain point it doesn’t matter because, as they say, not hitting is not hitting is not hitting
Alright, whatever.
Ken Gerhart was supposed to be awesome,
but my recollection is that he certainly wasn’t.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
Sorry Stacey...

I coulda sworn it was like…August or something.

Pie's reaction, per The Sun
http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/orioles/blog/2011/08/pie_speaks_about_being_designa.html
"It’s a business. I know that. It’s better for me, because here I don’t play. And I know I can play every day. I showed the team I could play every day last year, and I did my job. This year, I tried to do my job, too. But it’s difficult, tough not to play," Pie told The Baltimore Sun. "I know I am the kind of player that [if] I play every day, I’ll do better and better. I think it’s much better for me to be put on waivers and see if another team will take me."
Good luck with that, Felix.

“I know I am the kind of player that [if] I play every day, I’ll do better and better.
I think he’s managed to prove this year that precisely the opposite was true. Somehow he’s actually gotten worse the more he’s played.
well, he hasn't played EVERY day, which is his point
i’m not trying to defend him, but he’s trying to say that the playing sporadically has hurt him (which, I don’t think I buy).
meaningless game in a mostly meaningless season of meaningless meaninglessness. emperor nobody, A's Nation.
I think he's proven that his playing ...
… whether every day or sporadically, has hurt the Orioles.

no arguments there
of course, felix says he needs to play everyday to help and he claims last year proves it.

if this really is the end, it’s been a fun ride Felix. we’ll miss your wacky antics, but not your quality of play.

In fairness to Felix
I once commented here something to the effect of “Luke & Felix are good for the soul.” When they were both going well last year, and egging each other on, at times it was very fun to watch.
Plus I realize he is permanently on my personal lifetime highlight reel. I’ll never forget being at the Yards for Felix’s cycle. Only one I’ve seen so far and may be the only one ever. It was a thrill to be there.
Thanks & goodbye, Felix.

This makes me sad,
but really the time has come. Nolan Reimold deserves to start and Pie hasn’t taken advantage of the playing time he has. It seems like he might be like a guy who has a great year 3 years from now, but the reality is that he hasn’t done enough to earn more playing time on the second worst team in baseball.
What sucks is that there really isn’t anyone I want to see get Pie’s playing time. Matt Angle’s ceiling is a defensive replacement. Kyle Hudson doesn’t have any power.
Getting Pie for Olson was the right kind of move for MacPhail. Like the few other things the Orioles do right, it just didn’t work out.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
garret olson, forgot about him
i normally don’t believe in AAAA players, but he’s a classic AAAA player.

B-R has Jo Jo Reyes listed
under “Most Similar by Age” on the Garrett Olson page.
We’ve come a long way, baby.

I'd be greatly surprised if Felix has even a better than average year ...
… anytime in the future. Not unless a light comes on upstairs.
