Michael Gonzalez traded to Texas Rangers for PTBNL
From Orioles press release:
The Orioles today announced that they have traded LHP MICHAEL GONZALEZ to the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later. The club has also recalled LHP ZACH PHILLIPS from Triple-A Norfolk.Gonzalez, 33, went 2-2 with one save and a 4.27 ERA (46.1IP, 22ER) in 49 appearances for the Orioles this season. He has not allowed a run in his last 13 appearances, surrendering five hits and one walk with 15 strikeouts over 12.1 innings. Gonzalez went 1-3 with one save and a 4.01 ERA (24.2IP, 11ER) in 29 games in his first season with the Orioles in 2010.
Phillips, 24, was acquired on July 19 from Texas in exchange for minor league INF NICK GREEN and cash considerations. He went 1-1 with one save and a 2.63 ERA (13.2IP, 4ER) in 14 games for the Tides after beginning the season with Triple-A Round Rock. Phillips entered 2011 with a career minor league record of 30-36 with a 4.08 ERA (637.1IP, 289ER) and 615 strikeouts in 180 games (98 starts) in the Texas organization.
They sure took advantage of Gonzo pitching well the last couple weeks, didn't they? I didn't see anything online about the possible PTBNL, but without access to Twitter, I guess I wouldn't. Maybe Koji Uehara will pitch better down in Texas with a familiar face in the bullpen.

Didnt the minor league player who was traded for some bats kill himself?

I think it might have to be Manny or Dylan in order for them to accept

Money well saved
even if Gonzo had continued to put up scoreless innings in the remaining meaningless games (unlikely)

That appears to me ...
… to be the only reason to do this. A PTBNL is almost always a scrub, right? Is there any player to have even moderate success in the league who was aquired as a PTBNL?

You can't trade newly signed draft picks
so it could be someone they drafted fairly late that we like, but they just can’t announce it yet
There are exceptions
Drew Pomeranz was a PTBNL, but we aren’t getting a Drew Pomeranz for the Marlboro Man. There are some other decent ones (David Ortiz, Miguel Olivo, and that’s all I can think of).
I’m pretty sure the PTBNL is Koji. That’d be pretty sweet.

I like getting Koji back, if that is the deal.

Wow!
We totally won this trade. Andy just ripped the Rangers faces off.

Good shit
Hope Gonzo continues his recent dominance and sticks it to the Yerks or Sux in the playoffs.

In related news...
The Giants cut Miguel Tejada and Aaron Rowand. I expect the O’s to announce 2 year, $15 million contracts for them both tomorrow.
Roch says the PTBNL is a pitcher
and that MacPhail was also talking to the MFY about Gonzo but didn’t like whoever they offered.
no, not Olney. But I hear good things.
Look at Andy Mac making one last run at MBP
MacPhail vs. Anyone That Does Anything In Today’s Game…WHO WILL OWN IT
I would guess
That this PTBNL would also have to pass through waivers in order to make the trade complete? That makes me think we’re getting a reclamation project, or a fuckup.

So, what about resigning Gonzo over the winter?

Once again, I'm bothered by
the high walk rate of a guy acquired to throw into the bullpen
Alright, whatever.
Well, we keep saying the Orioles need to understand that walks are good...
…so in a perverse way, it’s a step in the right direction, no?

Also why can't we get some young dudes?
At least this guy has a good arm. Can’t have too many dudes throwing mid-90s.
Also his BB rate at AAA is not TERRIBLE – 3.7 to go with an 11 (!) K rate. Could be worse.

I have a lot of faith in the Orioles development guys to lower that walk rate...
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
I thought there would be a huge party going on here at this news!
Or did Gonzalez rehabilitate himself at some point when I wasn’t looking?
not "rehabilitate" so much as
“sucked somewhat less”
I think a Kevin Gregg farewell party would be much more celebratory at this point
"I may make you feel, but I can't make you think." Ian Anderson
Exactly
I stopped hating Gonzo so much when Kevin Gregg arrived along with his stupid face. I can only have so much angst for a reliever on a 65 win team, and Gregg has the market virtually cornered right now.
"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
The thing about Gonzo is that even when he sucked, he didn't act like a huge entitled dick
It’s easy to not hate him when Gregg is around.
Giraffes have absurdly strong necks.
He actually seems bothered when he does badly
unlike fuckface.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
That's because nothing that ever happens to Gregg is his fault
Either old man Jorge Posada had to do a lot of things right or Josh Bell sucks at baseball (which he does, but that’s your teammate, a-hole), or whatever else. I don’t know what he blames his 6.0 BB/9 on.

the sun was in his eyes

LOL, Gregg is a lightning rod.
I root for the Cubs as well and Cubs fans rejoiced to see him gone. I think I screamed out loud when I heard the Orioles signed him. I can’t remember, I think I blacked out for a moment as well.

Ahaha, that sounds right.
I wasn’t a Gonzo hater or anything, but I was pretty exasperated with him along with most of the fans when he didn’t turn out to be what we expected. I just thought it got a bit…intense here at times. (as it still does, if I may say so. Deep breaths, folks?) So I figured there would be festivities at the news.
