Monday Bird Droppings

TORONTO, CANADA - SEPTEMBER 11: Tommy Hunter #39 of the Baltimore Orioles is pulled after 2 home runs in the 8th against the Toronto Blue Jays during MLB action at the Rogers Centre September 11, 2011 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Abelimages/Getty Images)

Andy MacPhail's likely departure a blow to Baltimore Orioles - SI.com
"MacPhail's expected departure is the latest in a string of blows covering more than a decade for the storied franchise gone south."

Adam Loewen: Friend or foe? - baltimoresun.com
Adam is Dropping and Driving for someone else now. Do we care?

The week that was in Birdland (Sept. 11th) - isportsweb
"There’s no question that these Orioles are playing out a string of games to merely get to the end of the season at this point, however we’re also starting to learn a few things about some of the younger players we’re starting to see."

Baltimore Orioles GM Candidates - MLB Daily Dish
"The Baltimore Orioles are beginning to look at general manager candidates and the few whispers making their way up the I-495 are that former Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes is a leading candidate to be the teams next GM. Let's take a quick look at Byrnes and two others who are on the Orioles' radar." Up the "I-495"? I do not think that means what you think it means.

Buck Supposedly Has the Option of Being GM and Manager Concurrently - Camden Depot
"Buck would be the first person to occupy this position since Paul Richards who was the Orioles GM and manager from 1955 to 1958 when Lee MacPhail took over the GM role, leaving Richards as only the manager of the team. Even back in the 50s this was considered a unique situation. There are just too many reasons for this not to be a good idea and it is why few have ever tried to do it."

Steve Melewski: Potomac rallies and beats Frederick to force Game 5 - MASN
"The Frederick Keys took a 1-0 lead to the eighth inning this afternoon at Potomac. Six outs from advancing to the Carolina League championship series, the Keys could not maintain the shutout. Potomac came up with six runs in the last of the eighth to post a 6-1 victory that evens the best-of-five series at two wins and sends the clubs back to Frederick Monday night at 7 p.m in the fifth and deciding game." The winner of that game will play Kinston in the championship series.

Orioles Buzz: James Baker: As fall slowly starts to arrive ... - MASN
"That is why I watch, because Markakis still feels the need to lower his shoulder and drive through Cervelli in a game that means nothing to Baltimore, save for pride. As long as that is the case, I will feel the need to sit and comment, watch and cheer. It's in my blood and even though this season has been an unmitigated disaster as fall begins to show itself in between the raindrops, my heart begins to sink because I know it is coming to an end."

if it makes you feel any better, my pick of KC over BUF iced me from my survivor pool in week 1. that has never happened to me before. :(

ATL seemed like an unnecessary risk against CHI

I would never, ever pick CLE in a survivor pool regardless of who they are playing. San Diego was a good pick this week, as was Houston…..feel like they always start strong and fade a bit, so getting them (Houston) out of the way was cruc.

Buck as GM/Manager:

Is there a worse option than this? The guy still uses Kevin Gregg in high leverage situations. I’d rather resign Andy to a 5 year deal. Outside of installing Bavasi as GM, this has to be the worst possible scenario.

Agreed.

I had a whole giant paragraph typed out, but it basically boils down to what you guys are saying.

I don’t want to automatically assume Showalter would do a poor job, but we need a GM that can take full advantage of other GMs that still think this way.

Camden Depot
If Angelos does allow Buck to serve in both roles and Buck chooses that route, I do not think this team will be best served under that scenario.

If that isn’t the understatement of the year. It would be fucking awful if Buck becomes manager and GM. Knowing his huge ass ego, he might be down with that.

The sad reality is that I suspect that even if the Orioles hire a different GM,

he’ll merely be a figure head. Everything will have to go through Showalter and the Orioles will be just as shitty in 3 years as they are now. On the flip side, Adam Eaton is likely available and won’t cost Matt Wieters.

Heyman article

The SI article quoted a baseball source as saying that the Os are the weakest team in the division at both the major league and minor league levels. We know, painfully, that this assessment is true of the big team. I assume that the statement is also true of the minor league teams.? Norfolk is terrible. I know that the Rays and Sox got a haul in this year’s draft. I know that the Jays mine the international market. We seem to have some prospects in the lower minors. Are we weakest by a lot? Is there any hope for the Os ever?

Sorry to be pessimistic. It is Monday.

by BaltoBen on Sep 12, 2011 9:50 AM EDT reply actions

From a Jays opinion

the Orioles farm is at least a step behind the Sox and Yankees (Sox-wise it’s their depth, they always sign a lot of toolsy types, with the Yankees it’s just they’ve hit big with a few youngsters atm, their farm is usually similar to yours), and a long way away from the Rays. You’ve got that occassional stud prospect, but it’s the lesser number of toolsy upside guys that makes most of us just pass the Orioles by. You always seem to be relying on a handful of make or break talent, instead of bringing up a huge wave of youngsters like the Rays do and seeing what sticks.

but apparently, starting this year, there will be a Gold Glove for each OF position, rather than three for any kind of outfielder (which all go to some combination of center fielders, Ichiro, and Torii Hunter).

None of the company computers had Vista. They designed this thing specifically for xp to win7. The only problem is, they have multiple different computer models. For the people with my computer make, the “upgrade” wipes out all of the drivers. For the other people, it worked just fine without requiring any driver reinstalls.

Exactly what I was coming here to talk about haha...

What do you think of this? This site has good reviews on W00t and I would buy a RAM upgrade and install myself. Basically, is it okay for me to stick with XP if I’m not planning on playing computer games or anything? All I want it for is web browsing, storing music on iTunes, and writing the occasional paper.

My laptop crapped out and I want to get a dirt cheap laptop to just use as a hub and then get the iPad2 with iCloud and iMatch, assuming they do what they’re rumored to do.

Yeah I was thinking that too

I’m not sure how much longer my laptop has to go though. It’s on death’s door.

I don’t mind XP at all though. What I’m wondering is, if I got this and stuck with XP, with 2.4 GHz and myabe 3-4 GB of RAM, would I have a super fast web browsing monster, or does it not work like that? Seriously, zero percent chance of me ever using this thing for anything other than web browsing and iTunes. No games or big programs.

I don't think it'd be a monster

I just replaced my D630 last week. Looked exactly like the laptop you just posted but the processor probably wasn’t as good. It had 4GB of RAM. I bought it in 2007 and it served me well for a while.

The reason I replaced it was because of constant nVidea driver issues. I had gotten the 3-year in-home service plan with it and just before the three-year mark, I had to use it to replace the motherboard or something like that, since the graphics card was built in to it. Or something like that, I don’t remember all the details. But that only fixed the problem for a few months and then it was back to its old self, which means that it would choke on Chrome if you had too many tabs open (I’m talking like 20), and would randomly BSOD when playing web videos.

I replaced it with a Dell Vostro that has an i5 and 6GB of RAM. Just got it last week and it was $700, but you can get an i3 with less RAM for around $400. I’d recommend doing that instead of buying a 4-5 year old laptop with an equally old processor.

Meh

Apple REALLY needs to announce the new iPhone and officially announce the iCloud and iMatch so I can start making moves.

If the iCloud and iMatch do what they’re rumored to do, all I need is a laptop to just sit there and house all of my music on iTunes like an external Hard Drive. Then as long as you’re connected to the internet, you should be able to use the Cloud to pull any music you want off of there and temp store it on the iPad or just stream it. And then iPad would be used for all web browsing without any issues.
