Matsuz....
"It’s a work in progress," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter about Matusz. "I fully expect Brian to be a good option for us next year. I think he’ll go home and … he’ll figure it out.
Why does Buck even say that? Who’s gonna help him figure it out? He’s supposed to go home for 3 months, have an epiphany on his own, and suddenly be a competent MLB pitcher? THAT’S Buck’s plan?

Obviously Brian will have to devise his own conditioning plan.
He’ll just go home and…….figure it out!

Brian's a part of the 3 Down bit in 3 U, 3 Down on CBS
Brian Matusz, Orioles: The left-hander’s season is finally over. Coming off a strong 2011, the youngster was primed to take the next step toward becoming an ace… and instead now ends 2011 with a 10.69 ERA that was actually lowered Sunday when he coughed up six runs over five innings to the Tigers, with a three-spot in the fifth as Matusz’s last taste. That ERA will set a record for a pitcher with at least 40 innings, STATS LLC reports — but he’s in good company, as the previous record of 10.64 was held by Roy Halladay (2000).
“I’m going to have a lot of motivation going into this winter, because I’m never going to forget what this has felt like,” Matusz told the Associated Press. “I’ve got a lot of mistakes to learn from.” I’d say so.

I've got a bad feeling about this
Last night’s 2nd PHN game is the kind of thing that can end a death spiral.
I’d like to see Buck & his nuggets prove me wrong, but I’m not counting on it.
"If you don't like the effect, don't produce the cause."

So I'm reading MVP and Cy Young articles all over the place
and a lot of people an the “saber”-y side of the interwebs say that Kemp should/ could get the NL MVP. But isn’t the value of a marginal win more valuable on a contending team than on a .500 team like the Dodgers? Given the 0.9 fWAR gap between Kemp and Braun, wsn’t Braun more valuable this season? He might not have been as good, but he’s probably more valuable.
I’m starting to think that there is solid logic to picking an MVP from a contender, even if he isn’t the best player.
War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Vlad is good.
I take the middle ground
If a guy is on a team that’s expected to be bad or has been bad for a long time & clearly is a main reason they achieve respectability, like Kemp & to a lesser degree Bautista on the Jays, then I say he’s worthy of consideration.
But to give either award to a guy on a flat-out black hole of suck team coughkingfelixcough makes no sense, because they accomplished nothing towards making the team any better than it would have been otherwise.
"If you don't like the effect, don't produce the cause."

Plus the Dodgers have nobody.
Kemp, Kershaw, and some of Either are the only reason they’ve won any games at all.

Looking at it that way...
The Brewers are up 6 games in the standings. If you take away Braun’s 7.3 wins and replace him with just a competent player (say Nick Markakis), the Brewers are still leading their division.
by Holymittens on Sep 26, 2011 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions
But isn’t the value of a marginal win more valuable on a contending team than on a .500 team like the Dodgers?
The idea is to measure value to your team. If a player adds 7 wins that value doesn’t change if the team is a playoff contender or not. It’s still 7 wins. To give more value to Braun over Kemp penalizes Kemp for having bad teammates, a factor he has no control over.

Which brings us to the debate over what "value" means.
Since this isn’t the Most Outstanding Player award.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
Is a $200 ring more valuable than a $150 ring?
Because Kemp is the $200 ring and Braun is the $150 ring.
I totally agree.
But sometimes the $150 ring looks much better when Christina Hendricks wears it instead of the $200 ring on the homely looking woman begging for change on the sidewalk. Not that the ring itself is any better. Just appears better.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
Yeah, but is anyone really looking at her hands???

But that's irrelevant
We’re talking about value. Solely value. If I offer you $200 or $150, you take $150. If you stuff the $200 under your mattress, it does not become worth less than if you’d put it in a leather wallet.
Or another way to look at it
If you have a $50 dollar bill, it doesn’t become less valuable if it’s surrounded by $1 bills.
In the interest of eliminating the extended metaphors,
I agree with you. My feeling is the same. But I can also see that there is at least a colorable argument (not convincing, mind you) that a slightly worse player can provide marginally more value to a team that is a bubble contender for the playoffs and, thus, become a more “valuable” player.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
Then let's go sign Fielder!
No. That would be stupid because he’s less valuable to us than he is to a contender. His contribution on the field is more significant where it makes a difference.
Braun’s contribution to the Brewers was more valuable than Kemp’s contribution to the Dodgers, even though as of now, Kemp has been the better player.

again, you're penalizing fielder for having bad teammates if he signs with the orioles
he’s still providing the same value. you’re just discounting that value because of robert andino and others.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
I think he might have been kidding.
If he wasn’t, I don’t get why his value to another team should have any bearing on why we should or shouldn’t sign him.

What I was trying to convey (badly apparently)
is

yeah, i don't how the value of his contribution changes because braun has better teammates.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
Think of it as a season long leverage index.
Contribution in high leverage situations during ballgames is more valuable than during low leverage situations (a walk with 2 out none on top of the first vs. a walk with men on 1st and 2nd, no outs in the bottom of the ninth).
The way I see it is playoff bound teams are playing high leverage games vs. low leverage games by non-contenders and the contender’s players contributions, if equal with the contribution by a player on a non- contending team, is more valuable.
War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Vlad is good.

it depends on who they replace braun with
if they replace him with a replacement level player, then the brewers would be on almost tied with the braves for the WC card spot.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
I don't think that it is "actual" wins/losses.
That is more for story stats like WPA where you can better attribute win/loss swings to plays made by individual players. Not sure if that’s what you mean, though.

War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Vlad is good.
by J(O's)elskIL on Sep 26, 2011 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Because WAR is not measured that way
WAR isn’t measured on a game-by-game basis. Well, I guess you could do it if you wanted to for some reason, but it’s not relevant.
Again, you’re punishing a player for having bad teammates.
Consider it this way… If the two players switched teams, but put up the same stat lines, Kemp would still be the more valuable player.
If anything, Kemp is WAY MORE VALUABLE to his team because he’s the equivalent of giving a homeless man a $20, while Braun is giving a regular guy $20.
Right
Which is why factoring in something like a team’s record or playoff boundedness is meaningless.
Yes.
And the homeless dude needs the PBR more than the regular guy. Far fewer options for entertainment and far more reasons to get trashed.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
Braun's on a playoff team though.
He’s buying champagne with that 20 dollars. Kemp’s stuck with Natty Light.

You’re penalizing every player that isn’t on a good team. Plus, what about the teams that are close to the playoffs but don’t make it? The Brewers play in one of the worst divisions in baseball. Are their “high-leverage situations” equal to the “high-leverage situations” that teams in the AL East face?

So what happens to the shitty team that they're playing?
A player with a good game against a team close to the playoffs still has a good game. His contribution is no less valuable than a player on that almost-playoff team.
Essentially you’re arguing that MVPs should only come from playoff teams since their games are more important than the games that shitty teams play.

How so?
Playoff teams usually have far more than one good player. Who’s the MVP of the Phillies this year? They had like 4 awesome starting pitchers. Would they have been worse without any of those 4 pitchers? Yes. Which one is more valuable to the team?
You’re basically saying ignore every player from non-contenders since they don’t have the value that players on contenders do. How would the Orioles have fared without JJ Hardy this year? I have no doubt in my mind the Nats would be in last place in the NL East if not for Michael Morse.

by twistedlogic on Sep 26, 2011 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Or from a different perspective,
players on shitty teams may actually be better players since they have to compete against slightly better competition. Since you can’t play your own team, a player on a shitty team has one less shitty team to play whereas a player on a playoff team has one less quality opponent. I realize this isn’t a particularly strong argument but there it is.

The other thing is what was recently argued by Joe Pos.
He suggested that the great player on a bad team may be doing something more incredible – solely because it has to be so easy to check out on a team that’s way out of contention. It’s easy to stay focused if you’re in the playoff chase.
Ah, but if your team sucks – you can lose your mental focus in that grind. The player on the bad team who shows up, day in and day out, does all the things they need to do to keep their talent at its maximum, that may be the player who’s truly doing something special. In talking about this I am pretty sure one of the players he singled out was Cal in 1991.

This seems like a reasonable point
I’m on the fence on the whole thing. Steve Nash won two MVPs a few years ago when he was far from the Most Outstanding Player. But he was the glue on a good team that just held everything together. Without him, everyone was significantly worse. Obviously, basketball examples won’t translate well since it’s more of a team sport. But I think it should be at least a small part of the equation.

Steve Nash was the “token white guy wins an MVP” award winner. He shouldn’t have won them.
Joking about the "token white guy" part, but...
Not joking about him not having deserved the MVPs those years. I don’t follow basketball that closely, but I believe both of those years other guys had superior years to him, yet he inexplicably won them.

I had him in all my leagues except the CC one. In my big money league ($200) he was my 8th rnd pick and I could keep him next year at the cost of a 6th rounder. Already had Colston go down, so looking at Sidney Rice as the #2 WR option.
Rice had a decent week.

In the interest of full disclosure
I wanted to draft Peyton Manning and took Brady by mistake (he was in my cue in case someone took Manning early for some reason). I also wanted to land Britt and was thinking of trading for him. I love pulling for the Rutgers guys, but playing in a league full of Baltimore fans means having Ray Rice get taken even earlier than he should be, so Britt is my homeboy. If all had gone according to plan I’d be done.

In case it wasn't entirely clear....
…. that the powers that be in MLB would prefer to keep the status quo:
After the first game of their series was rained out on Friday, the Yankees gave the Red Sox unusual input into the rescheduling of the game, drawing praise from Terry Francona, Boston’s manager. He recalled the Yankees’ general manager, Brian Cashman, explicitly saying, “This game means more to you.”
I’m surprised the Yankees didn’t send out forfeit lineups this past weekend.

Possible that the Yankees would rather play Boston than Tampa at this point
and would rather help Boston back their way into the playoffs in the event the two meet in the ALCS.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
Anybody who has seen the Red Sox play the last month has to figure they get swept out in round one.
They have been beyond abysmal in September. They are 6-18 in September. They are 2-16 in games where they score less than ten runs.
There is absolutely no competitive advantage to the Yankees in allowing the Red Sox into the playoffs, if they were to do such a thing or attempt to make such a thing happen. All they do is give either Texas or Detroit (currently Texas) an easy first round matchup.

Sometimes the best team does not always win in the playoffs (see, SF Giants 2010, StL Cards 2006, etc.)
If I am the Yankees, I might prefer a worse team in the event the worse team gets lucky and wins the first round. On the other hand, it may be more to the Yankees advantage to have a higher likelihood of a long series so that whoever wins is more tired for the ALCS. Don;t know. Just throwing it out there.
Mother, did it need to be so high.
Why would NYY NOT want BOS to make it?
They won’t see BOS in Round 1 if BOS makes the playoffs, and someone else will beat them in 3 games. If anything, I don’t want BOS to make the playoffs if I’m NYY, because there’s no scenario where I get to beat them up in Rd 1 and get those off-days. Some other team I’ll have to face in Round 2 gets to get a bunch of days off while I’m potentially fighting out a 5 game series while BOS went home in 3. Yuck.

Well, they offer a BS explanation in the prequels
saying that he was “clouding” their understanding of the force because he was so dark and powerful. It doesn’t really fit with the original trilogy’s interpretation of the force but, there it is.
I always wondered about this one:
Anakin was the chosen one and was said to bring balance to the force, yet they were shocked that he became bad? Um, guys? There were about 4,000 Jedi running around and about 3 bad guys (Maul, Grevous, Vader…). When it’s written in words as cryptic as “bring balance to the force” instead of saying “make the good guys win”, wouldn’t you wonder?

Well that's pretty friggin unbalanced, no?
If I were the bad guys I’d alter that rule to “there can only be 47 sith at a time” because they’d win way more often that way.
