happy new year, camden chat!
Did everyone have (or is continuing to have) a good holiday?

I was until I realized I had to be back at work tomorrow.

I had a couple too but I was forced to work
But I think I’ll get extra days off since I had to work during that time. There was like 10 people in our whole building that week
@sibsinExile
I can't help but feel a bit richer today.
I’m not sure why…. Any ideas?

Hi Everyone
I don’t really post a lot; I usually just lurk.
But Happy New Year and all of that good stuff.
lurk = read, right?
Thx, and nothin’ wrong w/ that! Hey, I enjoy lurkin’ the NY Times every day — and after the bowl season, I’m gonna lurk George F. Kennan: An American Life . And maybe even relurk me some War and Peace or sth.

Whoa, how 'bout THAT Hail Mary?
Slips. double pumps, heaves, bingo. Simple.
Why there was no DB on the goal line escapes me. But I guess most teams don’t do a lot of Stop the Hail Mary drills in practice. I don’t remember it ever being mentioned in h.s. And we almost got beat by one, too (they missed the 2-pointer, hee-hee).
We still suck, but on Sept. 29, 2011, we did a Very Cool Thing. Yeah, we did that.
Happy New Year to all!
Can’t wait for reports about Oriole players showing up to Spring Training in the best shape of their lives.
Question! My mac is dying a slow death. I need to back it up on an external hard drive. I have mostly pictures and stuff…any recommendations on what external hard drive to buy?
Any, since I’m asking…the best (i.e., cheapest) way to buy a mac? I all I really need is a basic one, and I heard you could buy them off ebay?
Thanks in advance!
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
How much of that data is absolutely critical?
If it’s under 5gb, iCloud is free. All Mac users have it.
Above 5gb I believe it’s $25 a year.
As for getting a new Mac
Have you thought about just backing up your data and wiping it, starting anew?
It might be worth a shot, and it would be a lot cheaper.
the mac is getting up there that's all,
and I just heard the click of death!
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
Click's aren't always fatal, but its definitely a good idea to back it up
i had an external HD that had all my movies and tv shows on it that started clicking. After spending hours backing it up, it hasn’t made a noise since.
I always just check newegg daily deals until theres a good sale on a hard drive with decent reviews
Unfortunately, hard drive prices are still somewhat elevated after last years flooding in Thailand, so its not a great time to buy.
Yea you don't really need to worry about the brand too much because the internal components are all mad eby the same few manufacturers
Given that, the body and stuff can still be flimsy. I usually get Western Digital (pretty cheap), but you should be fine with whatever is cheapest.
@sibsinExile
I just back up my important files to a thumb drive
Can’t get any simpler or cheaper.

I don't have any 350GB thumb drives
And that’s how much I have in music and photos.
Also – don’t buy ClickFree. Just got a 1TB backup disk, and every time it tries to back up my HD, when it’s “done”, it tells me the computer doesn’t recognize the drive and do I want to format it? I unplug it, it tries to back up again, and same thing.
So don’t get ClickFree.

Maybe.
Personally, I think they could be .500 with a few small tweaks to the squad they’ve got. For example, not putting Kevin Gregg in to blow saves, etc.
I don’t have much tolerance for stupid. Or cheese on food that doesn’t need it. -duck
We're not close to .500
Not even close. And I see no progress towards it in 2012. What, realistically, are we doing different in 2012 that we didn’t do in 2011? Unless we see MASSIVE progress from 3 of the young starters, we’re not gonna sniff .500 for a long, long time.
See Andrew_G’s post from a few weeks ago stating just how much better all the pitchers have to get to get use close to .500.
"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King
Proud member of Trainyard Sleepers, BECW: S2
We're gonna win, you know. Stats lie.
But why do we need to rely on JUST the pitchers getting better?
It seems like with some improvement in all aspects of the game (some of which I would consider a reversion to the mean) they could easily pick up a bunch of games. We don’t need 3 starters to have massive progress, we need everybody on the team to make SOME progress. If the defense makes some progress the pitching will improve without any of the pitchers making any progress. If the pitchers improve a little on top of that then it’s significant progress. If the starters improve a little bit and the defense improves a little bit, we’ll the bullpen will be used less often and will be fresher when they are used and should improve at least a little. Then if you add some offensive improvement and it’s a totally different team.
Now is any of that particularly likely? Of course not, but I agree with TL that the team as it stands certainly COULD be .500 with a few small tweaks.

He's still good, but def not good enough to be the only return for AJ
and I bet it will be a top pitching prospect. They have them coming out the ears and they desperately need a real CF

I mean he is definitely good
but a) he’s getting rapidly more expensive, b) he has health concerns, c) I worry about the potential for a low k/9 relatively high bb/9 guy in the AL East. I’d be cool with another top pitching prospect and him though…
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Well, that's hard to say
On the one hand, I’d have to think the trade value for Jones is better than Jurrjens and any of the Braves pitching prospects besides Teheran (and seriously, what do we want Jurrjens for anyways, unless to flip him too) – although you could make the case that in this market, Teheran is so valuable as to be nearly untradeable. But I don’t think Minor is all that great, and I’m not convinced that Vizcaino or Delgado are starters in the long run, so there isn’t really a potential awesome prospect in this deal. I don’t think that the Braves and the O’s match up especially well, honestly, but that’s also because I don’t value pitching prospects as highly as positional ones, and that’s what I think the O’s need much more.
But you don’t get to pick who wants your players when you reach the moment where they really must be traded. And because the Orioles foolishly didn’t put Jones on the market and set up a bidding war, they have let their options dwindle. The Nats spent their prospects on Gio Gonzalez. The Marlins need a center fielder, but don’t have any prospects. The Cardinals could use Jones but don’t need him enough to part with their most valuable prospects. The other contenders are mostly set at center field because almost by definition you have to be unless you are awesome everywhere else.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Yeah
Would you prefer they just held onto Jones instead of making a deal for Jurrjens and say Minor?
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Eh
Not really. They need to move Jones. I just think that if they make that deal, it is because they didn’t explore their options around the league but instead fixated on the Braves and Jurrjens, who I don’t like very much at all. If Jurrjens is a significant part of the return, then the O’s are making a poor decision – dealing one overvalued asset for another even more overvalued one.
To me, this entire potential deal is doing the right thing – trading Jones – for the wrong reason, to obtain Jurrjens. But holding on to Jones is also a losing play. If Mike Minor alone was literally the best return we could get for Jones, we would still be better off as an organization. But I don’t think that Minor is the best possible return, and so making that deal is just a different kind of failure to me.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
I'd be shocked if they only got Jurrjens OR Minor for AJ.
If Jurrjens does end up in Baltimore, we’ll get at least another top pitching prospect and those have value if you have bulk/ ability to develop arms (I know, I know). Position prospects are more valuable than pitching prospects because they are a better bet but a young pitcher is far more valuable than a young position player.
I'd put it this way; if an offense is a sugar cookie, on base percentage is the pastry part of the cookie, power is the icing, and baserunning is like the jimmies that they sprinkle onto the icing. - Bill James
I suspect that if this happens...
…it will be Jones and Andino for Jurrjens, Prado, Delgado and a low minors guy, maybe Salcedo if we are lucky.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Any reason to suspect Andino is being discussed?
I'd put it this way; if an offense is a sugar cookie, on base percentage is the pastry part of the cookie, power is the icing, and baserunning is like the jimmies that they sprinkle onto the icing. - Bill James
He's been asked about a lot this offseason, we've heard..
….and he makes a ton of sense – a backup for the Braves who can fill in at short if Pastornicky bombs, and he’ll be redundant if we pick up Prado.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Why not just keep Prado?
He plays everywhere else but SS
I'd put it this way; if an offense is a sugar cookie, on base percentage is the pastry part of the cookie, power is the icing, and baserunning is like the jimmies that they sprinkle onto the icing. - Bill James
Because, for whatever stupid reason, the Braves seem to want to move him
I think it is a dumb move for them, but that’s the way it seems to be.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
For the same reson, I think it's stupid to swap Andino for him.
But if we get Prado + decent (B-/C+) prospect for Andino, that’s a win.

What's your ideal trade haul for Jones?
Generally speaking, not necessarily tied to a particular team.
I definitely think that raiding some of those prospects the Nats sent to Oakland would have been better for the O’s. I don’t know why they didn’t shop Jones, either.

….we don’t have any use for Derek Norris, and he’s a big part of that deal. But Cole would have been as nice a piece as any Braves pitcher not named Julio Teheran.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
I think a reasonable return is two B/B+ prospects and a lower minors ceiling guy
My ideal last season would have been Belt/Wheeler/Gary Brown from the Giants. Something like the Singleton/Cosart deal that Philly gave up for Pence also would do nicely. But I think you need two high probability/high upside prospects, and one ought to be a position player.

Plus it’s just a matter of time before Jurrjens has an appointment with Dr. Andrews. This will be a regrettable trade IMO, but ultimately probably meaningless.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever

Well
Aren’t they all ultimately probably meaningless? The situation is pretty futile.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
It feels futile for sure,
but as pointed out upthread, acquiring Jurrjens makes little sense. Either go all in or don’t. The Orioles didn’t go all in when they dealt Bedard and Tejada because they didn’t deal Roberts. Of course, even if they dealt Roberts, it wouldn’t have mattered. If the Orioles want to tear it down and try to build around Wieters, no use in acquiring Jurrjens.

It's too late to tear it down and build around Wieters.
Because by the time something’s built, he’s gonna be a free agent. Sad but true.

Eh
Say Machado and Bundy are in the majors in two years. Machado, Bundy, Britton, maybe one of Arrieta or Matusz, and two more seasons of Wieters.
That’s a core that can contend, but only if all those players turn out like they could.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Disagree (partially).
You are not counting some key potential pieces like B. Bundy and Schoop. Also remember, in the next two years there will be players we’ve never counted on to develop that will and some will fail. It’s how it works. Not all of who you named will make it but others will instead.
And if we are close to contending (and with proper roster construction) we can fill the remaining holes by trading prospects or FA.
I'd put it this way; if an offense is a sugar cookie, on base percentage is the pastry part of the cookie, power is the icing, and baserunning is like the jimmies that they sprinkle onto the icing. - Bill James
Bobby Bundy doesn't have the upside to be a core player
He’s a nice mid rotation arm, which is a fourth starter in the AL East. Schoop is not going to be in the majors in two years, as nice as he is.
The O’s don’t have anyone with the ceiling of Machado and Dylan Bundy who has a shot of being in the majors soon enough. But if those guys are the phenoms people claim they are, it could work. Of course, Wieters has to get a lot better too.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
If B.B is projected as a mid-rotation arm (which he is)
then that’s what he’s projected as.
And no one has more than two prospects with D. Bundy’s & Machado’s ceiling. And Wieters is on the upswing. Outstanding D and solid hitting. I’m high on SHJ and I think his power jump is real.
I'd put it this way; if an offense is a sugar cookie, on base percentage is the pastry part of the cookie, power is the icing, and baserunning is like the jimmies that they sprinkle onto the icing. - Bill James
Several teams have more than two with their ceiling...
…with their combo of ceiling and probability, not as much. But the Royals do, and so do the Mariners, and so does Pittsburgh, and so does Arizona, and that’s just off the top of my head.
I’m high on Wieters too.

Yuck.
Two years of a decent pitcher is not cool and unless we get a good prospect, this sounds pretty shitty.

not Jair Jurrjens.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
by dfa on Jan 3, 2012 1:30 AM EST up reply actions
Well, it means you have to deal Jones
They have gone about it all wrong, but it has to be done. Yes, deal him for prospects, less even for the cost control and more because they will be around when Machado and Bundy are, and only when they are and if they are what we hope they can be do we have a shot at being good. Ergo, Jurrjens has no value to us (he’s also injury prone and seriously outperforms his peripherals, which are both big reasons why everyone else has gone for some other pitcher on the market).
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Bingo.
If we’re trading Jones we should probably be getting a bunch of 19-22 year old dudes. Not a guy who’s about to be 26, and more importantly, has four full seasons in the big leagues already.
And also IS GOING TO GET KILLED IN THE AL EAST.
