Hey Stacey:

Power search is totally broken. I am trying to find the video of Jonesy gunning down Jeter on 4/24. I searched for “Adam” and “Jones” for that date and the date after and nothing came up. Then I searched for the word “and” and still nothing came up.

So meanwhile, does anyone know where that video would be? I guess I should try searching mlb.com…..

Phil Rogers suggests the Cubs take Brian Roberts for Alfonso Soriano.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Jan 7, 2012 4:41 PM EST reply actions

Interesting.

A reasonable deal could have the Cubs sending Soriano and $9 million (half of Soriano’s 2012 salary) for Roberts and a prospect or two.

Well, that’s what Mr. Chicago Tribune says, but the Cubs must really be sour on Soriano to think about that deal. They’re basically taking $29M of dead money (plus maybe giving up a prospect or two) in order to get out from underneath $54M. That leaves the O’s on the hook for $45M to Soriano, but you can consider them being $20M to the good due to trading Roberts. So they’d need to get $25M of value across 3 years – which would be Soriano’s age 36, 37 and 38 seasons. He turned 36 today.

Looking at his last three seasons, I’m going to go ahead and say no thanks.

by Tezcatlipoca on Jan 7, 2012 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

wait, okay

so Soriano is due $54 million over the next three years. Roberts is owed $20 million over the next two years. They are both pretty much zeroes production-wise, though the edge definitely goes to Soriano, but neither of them are difference makers enough for the Orioles, so we’ll just say they’re both about zero production-wise in Baltimore.

Phil Rogers wants the Orioles to take on $25 million bucks, an additional year of wasted roster space, and give up a “prospect or two” while giving up an equally bad player who is pretty popular off the field?

Yeah, no thanks, pal.

They had most everything I thought to try to listen to, with a few exceptions here and there. No Tool albums, for instance, or at least that was the case in the summer.

I didn’t like it enough to keep using it when the trial was over. I also think it has mandatory FB integration now, and it’s annoying if it’s going to force you to broadcast everything you’re playing on there.

If I'm understanding it correctly (which is a stretch)

It seems like while it has the pandora features (random music similar to music you pick) you can also just search songs and keep them in your playlists to listen to whenever you want.

by O'sFan21 on Jan 7, 2012 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

Ah.

Interesting. I generally just listen to music on shuffle on my iPod, so when I use Pandora (at work), I just have it randomly pick stuff for me. Plus it almost always gives me new stuff I like.

by Holymittens on Jan 7, 2012 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah that's what I do too

and I use pandora to find new stuff that I like but with this you don’t then need to go buy it on itunes or whatever once you hear a song you like and want to hear regularly.

Why do you think Pandora is better?

I assume Pandora is better at figuring out what you like and making recommendations.

Though it continually tries to give me jazz, doesn’t realize I dislike most songs with death growls, and can’t differentiate between good comedy rap and bad comedy rap and keeps giving me the later.

They're really for different things

Spotify seems like it’s more about finding specific songs and artists and listening to them and making playlists to listen to whenever you want. It has some pandora-like features, but that’s not the primary purpose of the technology.

Then they must have a horrible algorithm for matching artists/musical styles

I’ve tried their “Metallica” channel a few times, and my God, it was horrible. I’d get 1 Metallica song and then 4 songs by bands I’ve NEVER heard of, another Metallica song, and 4 more bands whose last concert audience probably had 4 people in it. I mean, it shouldn’t be that hard to have related bands show up in a playlist labeled “Metallica”. But apparently it is. I’ve given it a few chances, but wow, it’s bad at populating playlists. Just unlistenable stuff no one’s ever heard of.

Well

just as an example, I just did a quick search for The Band and was able to listen to what I can only assume is every song they’ve ever recorded including obscure live recordings. I was then able to add any of the songs that I liked to a playlist that I can listen to whenever I want. How would I do any of that on Pandora or iTunes without paying for the songs?

Again I’m not saying it’s life-changing, but it’s entirely different than either pandora or itunes.

but how hard is it to populate the rest of the playlist with stuff people who listen to Metallica have actually heard? Slacker does, Pandora does. Yet Spotify can’t. The difference is when you steal a coat from Macy's, they can no longer sell that coat to someone else

When you download a song, you aren’t denying anyone else the opportunity to purchase that song. I download way more music than i could ever afford to buy. If i was no longer able to do that, I would just not listen to music. My actions don’t negatively impact artists’ or record labels’ profits. Ethically, you can argue the same. Unless its a price I can afford and/or feel like theres some additional value provided

I paid a few dollars when In Rainbows came out, and i’ve bought special editions of certain albums.

And actually, theres an argument that theres a positive economic benefit to me downloading music. When i do have income, i like to go to concerts and frequently buy merchandise at those concerts. Thats income that more directly supports artists that i may have otherwise never been exposed to or liked enough to see live.

I paid a few dollars when In Rainbows came out, and i’ve bought special editions of certain albums.

Gotcha. Frankly, I was going to call BS here because I thought you were trying to say you don’t find music valuable enough to you pay for it. This reeked of what criminologist David Matza has called techniques of neutralization (rationales criminals use to justify their shady ass behavior). But it appears you will pay for music when the value of that music is worth paying for it. I’m the same way but I’m probably not as picky as you. There’s plenty of music out there that I’ll take for free because I really don’t like it enough to pay but I wouldn’t mind placing it on my ipod. But I like a lot of music so I’m willing to pay for any music that I like. If you don’t like music and you’re only willing to take it for free then cool. I don’t have a problem with that.

And actually, theres an argument that theres a positive economic benefit to me downloading music.

There are plenty of good reasons that free music in certain doses is great for an artist.

Or buy their merchandise

From what I’ve come to understand, bands basically make no money off sales of their first three albums because the contracts with major record companies don’t pay them much in royalties. They only get money from concerts and secondary merchandise sales (t-shirts and posters).

by Holymittens on Jan 7, 2012 9:45 PM EST up reply actions

And that won't change

Big bands are now just DIY’ing thier sales. Trent Reznor sells all his stuff through downloads, Coldplay does its thing, and other bands are warming up to it. Labels are still needed to get unknown artists in the public’s attention span, but once there, the acts really don’t need them anymore. Thus the draconian contracts will just get worse.

I don't agree

Music existed long before it was profitable, and it would exist long after. Musicians would shift to extracting value from the live performance of music rather than an artificial intellectual property right.

by kba26 on Jan 7, 2012 9:53 PM EST up reply actions

Actually no, i should restate that

We’d have a lot less crappy music for sure. But people that really care about making music are still going to do so. They’d just be compensated in different ways.

by kba26 on Jan 7, 2012 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

This is definitely not true

We wouldn’t have less crappy music, we’d be left with more bands that are “commercially viable” so they can sell out stadiums and sell merch, and that would leave us with a whole lot more Nicklebacks and Justin Biebers.

People that care about music will still make it, but making a living at it would be much harder because they’re scrapping by as it is and already touring 300 days a year. Where are they going to make up that lost income?

but, for example, I heard an interview on NPR about The Roots new Album last month. I’ve never really listened to The Roots before that, but I was interested in the themes. Then I saw the album, Undun, was only 5 bucks on amazon. So I bought it without any real expectations. And I really love it. And I’ve made similar sight unseen purchases in the past on Arcade Fire and (believe it or not) Bob Dylan and Gnarls Barkley. It’s worked out probably 80% of the time for me.

This year I plan to put some back into that thing. Probably not as much to cover what I took out last year, but enough to make me feel like it’s growing again.

Brees is a fucking carpenter.

Love that guy. Admittedly, he’s the anti-Tebow.

Will work for Recs.

Saints up 10 late (31-21)

Excerpt from Simmons’ article…

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7432606/all-football-mailbag

SAINTS (-10.5) over Lions
You’ve heard the case for Detroit: It’s going to be a shootout, the Lions are going to throw on New Orleans, they’re used to playing indoors, and even if they’re getting mildly blown out, that extra half-point is a biggiethat extra half-point is a biggie (they can always pull off a backdoor touchdown (a Calvin Johnson specialty over the years). My counter in three parts …
All the Lions have going for them is that extra half-point

Looks like “the hook” might screw the gambling world tonight. Gotta hate getting beat by the effing hook.

Will work for Recs.

Wow

Quick… look how wide open that Brees TD was. I’ve never seen a WR with no one within 20 yards of him. Thats pathetic Detroit.

Will work for Recs.

Oh man

This will be funny to watch. Are the Lions gonna backdoor cover?
Lions ball, 3 minutes left, down 17.

Just delete all of this, lol.

Nobody’s watching the NFL playoffs around these parts?

what the hell happened to the Detroit secondary in this quarter?

Your cannonball trajectory, it always gave me hope

They look soooooo bad

Brees has just been tossing 40 yard bombs at will. It’s like they have less men on the field or something. Dropping 42 in SECOND HALF is nuts.

Will work for Recs.

if you fast forward through the kelly preston scenes, it’s pretty good.

I know this is anathema here,

But I like Posada, though not as much as I admire Mariano. Maybe it was him not wearing not wearing batting gloves or him almost crying during an interview last year, but Posada never came off as a douche like Jetes and Arod do.

If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever

I was wondering how there were 283 new comments on a Saturday night.

Then I saw that long debate over downloading music. Anyway, Grooveshark.
