Ripken, Jr. encouraged by Orioles' offseason moves - Baltimore Sun

Orioles fantasy camp, 'a feeling you can't describe' | The Daily Times
"When Bryan Adkins made the trip down to Sarasota, Fla., late last month, it was for more than just leisure. For the Salisbury resident, it was a chance to play the game he loved so much as he took part in the Baltimore Orioles' "Dream Week." The event took place from Jan. 29-Feb. 4 at the team's spring training and minor-league complex."
Is the cellar door locked? | The Yankee Analysts
"If I told you I was going to give you three players to build your offensive and positional lineup around, and that these three players would be a shorstop, center fielder, and catcher, all in their mid-20s, all with above average defensive ability, who combined to hit 77 home runs last season, you’d think that lineup would turn out pretty damn good. Unfortunately for Baltimore, just about nothing else has gone right." A few observations on our troubles by an outside observer.

you know what I hate?
the Yankees.
Jones is himself entering his late-20s.
Yes, by this time next yearJones will be only 3 years away from turning 30…his career is over!
It's depressing to me because 2011 and 2012 were when the O's were supposed to be good
And Jones was supposed to be leading that. But, not going to happen. IF the Orioles are going to be good, it’s going to be a few years away, and Jones WILL be about 30 then. That’s why I’d be okay with a trade.
well
he’ll be 30 in 4 years. Fanpost coming by EOD today though. Which i’m sure will prove without a doubt the orioles will win 90 this year. And then I get a car…and everyone else gets pizza!
and also...
it was the pitching that was supposed to be leading that. Our 2 big guns though seemed to have fallen apart (Matusz and Tillman). Still both are really young. And matusz showed promise 2 years ago…Maybe last year was the type of year he needed to turn it all around?
It seems like the plan is to give all the young pitchers another year to figure it out.
I sincerely hope you’re right about 90 games, but I don’t see how it’s possible unless you’re counting on a huge number of outrageously optimistic predictions. While each optimistic prediction seems eminently possible by itself (Wieters having a big year, Hardy not regressing that much, Britton not sucking), the chances that all of them come to pass, that everyone stays healthy, AND that the Orioles get the lucky breaks that would be necessary (in the form of things like injuries to key Yankee and or redsox players) seems extremely unlikely. I mean like 1,000,000 to 1. But I guess that’s why I watch.

Best odds? Surprisingly, the Phillies. Is this because all the power left the NL this offseason, or because everyone in Philly is a degenerate gambler?

not 1,000,000 to 1 surely
I think the odds are with us to win 85+, so i think the 90 projection is feasable, even if it’s a little whimsical.
You think we have a better than 50/50 chance of winning 85 games?

well if I didn't have to rely on facts

You could do it anyway.
You know, for fun. And by fun, I mean building up our expectations for the inevitable soul-sucking disappointment. You know, fun.

Also, the cellar door is deadbolted for the next 3 years...
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
I'll be sad if the Yankees trade Burnett.
Ever since they’ve signed him, I’ve enjoyed watching the deal blow up in their face. He’s given them an average era close to 5 over his 3 years there, and hasn’t even won as many games as he’s lost. Dominant. Not that those are good stats, but he certainly hasn’t had success. If he goes to the Pirates, I’ll just have to feel bad for him.
I dunno
I think moving him out of the AL East could help him renaissance a little. If the Pirates get a good deal for him, then it could be okay.
Your cannonball trajectory, it always gave me hope
I could see that.
I more meant that I’d be sad to see the Yankees making a smart move by getting rid of him. I want him to stay there and continue to put up very mediocre numbers for lots and lots of money.
I really can't believe Whitney Houston is younger than Jamie Moyer

Woah.
Projecting 6 WAR is not a good idea. Look for baby steps. Ask for Wieters for 5 WAR and no injuries in 2012. Just my thoughts…
If you add in DRS for him last year,
rather than just CS runs, he made 5.2 fWAR.
"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver
Ah, I didn't think about that. Good call.
I’m still hesitant to expect anything more than 5 WAR though, especially when you consider the year-to-year variation in defensive stats.
i agree completely
But Wieters was probably the best fielding catcher in the league last year. With some good luck his hitting could catch up and he would be an MVP canidate. I am riding the optimism today. Alas, it will all be gone by June. Also— what is DRS?

"Tragedy is what happens to me. Comedy is what happens to you." -Mel Brooks
Fangraphs has them at 7th in the majors for wOBA in 2011.
But yeah, they had some very good years from Gordon, Francoeur and Cabrera. Butler and Hosmer looked pretty good too. There’s definitely a non-zero chance that things break right for them in 2012 and they reel in a playoff spot.
The Indians actually aren't too bad.
They look like a decent team to buy low on. They have a nice rotation with Masterson and Jimenez at the top, followed by Lowe, Tomlin and (maybe) Carmona-Heredia. They have a good infield with Cabrera at short, Kipnis at second, Hannahan and Chisenhall at third, Santana splitting time between catcher and first. Brantley’s an average left-fielder, Sizemore and Choo could bounch back. Their bullpen looks kinda weak, but they may be able to hide that a bit. I’m just surprised that they didn’t have a more active offseason.
they are broke, i believe
which is why they didnt do more. They are good, yes, but I dont really think they have the hitting to compete with the AL East or West in any way. Id say Detroit ends up winning the division, with either Royals or Indians disappointing, and the other in second. The Twins and White Sox won’t be as in last as other divisions, but they won’t be in contention. The White Sox intrigue me because Adam Dunn’s last year could very well be an outlier. but then again they traded quentin which takes a lot of hitting out of the lineup. Id say Detroit, KC, WS, Indians, and then Twins. With the WS and Indians being interchangable
Re: WS
they also had a top 4 (maybe 3?) WAR pitching staff last year. If their bats come around a bit they could be quite a suprise
actually well thought out article by a (gasp!) yankees fan
It didn’t just say, oh the Orioles are the worst! A well thought out piece. One statement I thought very interesting was the bit about this team being just so unbalanced. We really need to try to get some pitching prospects for AJ or someone on the offensive side. i know everyone has been saying that but something just clicked when he talked about a 6th ranked wOBA (in the AL) and the worst FIP in the league. I am really hoping that Detroit struggles this year, and makes a stupid trade for AJ at the break, which would include Turner and Castelannos.
Why would you want for the MFY to get the TIgers' top two prospects?!

Why would Detroit want Jones?
They have Austin Jackson. And Turner is probably ready to help the Tigers now, so I couldn’t see them dealing him this season.
in this rosterbation
Austin Jackson has fallen hard. He struggled last year, and his struggles continued. But AJ could be their LF after they take Delmon Young out the back and shoot him. I could see it happening only because they already have a good starting core, and they are in we fucking better win now mode. Hell, if they are looking really good they could do this trade too to solidify themselves for the playoff run. They could even have reynolds for free, since he is a FA next yr, and could be a better 3B than Cabrera and put his ass at DH for the rest of the yr.
Okay. It's a big, big stretch, but I could see it.
Just two things though:
1) Jackson’s 2011 was way worse than his 2010, but that was mostly due to regression in his BABIP. His walk rate, power and fielding all improved slightly, while his strikeout rate took a small step back. And he still basically had the same fWAR as Jones (2.8 for Jackson, 2.9 for Jones).
2) Reynolds is under team control through the 2013 season. His current contract runs through 2012, then there is a $12M team option for 2013. If the O’s decline his option, they pay him a $500K buyout, and then they go to arbitration with him unless they can agree on a new contract for 2013 before a hearing.
I read it. It was a MFY blog, which is why I thought you were referenceing Burnett.

His replacement? Robert Andino and his career .635 SLG.
woah!
Seriously need to change my projections!
Just looked at Brooks Robinson's fangraphs page
And he had a year with a 32 in the Fielding section? Holy Shit!!!
Yeah, he also tops the Baseball-Reference
career defensive WAR leaderboards by about 3.5 wins. It’s awesome to see Orioles players near the top of the defensive leaderboards. Cal, Paul Blair and Mark Belanger are all pretty high up there.
Past Orioles excellence at defense and seeing the success of teams like the Rays,
make me sad that the current Orioles don’t put a lot of emphasis on defense. At least, MacPhail didn’t.
Yeah, it looks like it could be an undervalued commodity.
Problem is, nobody quite understands defense the way we understand offense. Just ask the 2010 Mariners about that.

Did anyone catch this
Fangraphs’ Community article on Britton?
It doesn’t actually tell us a lot, but the author’s findings are statistically significant. (He says that they aren’t in the article, then a commenter corrects him.) This kind of thing makes me wonder – do teams do this kind of analysis? And if they do, what should they do with it? Asking Britton to change his mindset could mess up his approach against hitters, but the extra strikeouts could be worth it if he can adapt to the new style. It seems like pitching coaches should approach this kind of topic with young pitchers in Spring Training, or in minor league games, just to see if the pitcher can make the adjustment without throwing everything else out of order.
I'm sure plenty of teams do this type analysis
It’s pretty straightforward and unsophisticated statistically. In regards to this article, the implication that Britton needs to strike out more people and do it more efficiently isn’t that surprising and I don’t think any quantitative analysis was needed to arrive at that conclusion.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
Hmm.
I guess I think it’s surprising to see that he wants to stick to his style of pitching (i.e. 80% sinkers) even though we can see that he could probably improve with some slight tweaks to his approach (e.g. throwing his slider more on 0-2 counts to lefties, trying different grips on his sinker so that he can throw it with less movement on 3-ball counts, etc.)
But he did say, “That’s something I can improve upon as I get older and more experienced, though. I can learn to make better adjustments.” So maybe he is doing those little things. And it’s possible that he has tried some of those things and they didn’t work out for him.
It’s a good Q&A though, worth reading. I forgot that I had read it, pretty surprised to see my homer comment at the bottom.
Zach did an interview on XM recently
He said Matusz was out of shape last year. Other than that, it was a boring interview. He did say that Matusz is now in the best shape of his life.

I’ve got a bottle of the new Dogfish Head Noble Rot that I’m pretty excited to drink. It’s just sitting in the fridge.
Tommy hunter still sucks!

They and Oakland got special permission to start early
because they’re opening the season with that series in Japan and the last week of their spring training is gonna be all messed up with travel arrangements
Baseball needs to start already
Football is over, I don’t care about the NBA, and the Terps are in a rebuilding year. This is the worst part of the sports year!

So begins the longest week of the year….

So I bailed on Battlestar Galactica
about halfway through season 2. No reason in particular, just kinda forgot about it. I’ve recently jumped back in and finished the season. Wow. Didn’t expect the ending. Now I know most people say that the show really falls off after the 2nd season, but after one episode of season 3 I am digging the new direction.

people yelled at me for spoiling the wire
so no, maybe not. I might want to watch Battlestar, you never know!
Special exception to spoiler rules for The Wire.
Masterpiece that it is, it does not deserve to be spoiled for any person.

I thought the ending was terrible.
I love the show, but everything after they leave New Caprica is relatively weak
Stop watching after they leave New Caprica.
You’ll know it when it happens because your jaw will be on the floor still.
This is my suggestion, anyway. Without giving away too much, that’s the best part of the show and it falls off a lot after that.

Did you and your gf finish watching X-Files?
I started re-watching the series with my boyfriend and we’re about halfway through season two. We skipped a bunch of duds in season one, though. I’m looking forward to many awesome episodes in the next few seasons, but I don’t know how far we should watch given how badly the show fell off in the last few years.
No we haven't.
On episode 21 of season 7. It’s been a few months. We watched too much too quickly and it got stale. We should probably get back to that next.

I'm thinking about making a fanpost to list some baseball questions we can answer with some statistical analysis.
Is anyone else interested in making this list and/or trying to answer some of the questions?
I’m thinking of things like the Guthrie issue:
What is the probability that a starting pitcher who throws about 200 innings for five straight years will outperform his FIP (and xFIP) each season? What about outperforming the league-average BABIP (or his expected BABIP) each season? What about outperforming FIP/xFIP over about 1000 innings? Do these results suggest a skill in outperforming FIP/xFIP and BABIP?
I'm happy to do some analysis
except what dataset can I use besides something off of fangraphs?
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
Baseball-Reference. I dunno what else.
Those are enough for a lot of things. And someone else might have be paying for B-R’s premium stuff, so we could ask them for the data. We’ll see.
I could tackle the questions above if you give me the right dataset.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
I'll make a fanpost tonight, just to get the ball rolling.
We can figure out what we need, then ask Stacey for the data.
I'm going crazy trying to put up this fanpost
i think I finally have everything in and formatted except 2 graphs. Is there a trick to posting them? I guess they would be pictures. computers are hard.
you have to host the pic somewhere
like photobucket or something, then use the add picture button to put it in.

I think I have to re-watch the Wire
I guess it’s been three years since I’ve seen the entire series. It seems like I’ve forgotten a lot about it.
I just rewatched seasons 1-3 back in Dec.
But now I get the opportunity to introduce the new girlfriend to it. So that is exciting, getting to see someone experience it for the first time.
