This list seems to be more in line with my thoughts.

by crawdaddy on Feb 13, 2012 7:01 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

From what I've gathered, his defense is what sets him apart.

Also the fact that he’s closer to being ready and much likelier to stick at SS.

Right…great talent, but I doubt he is a SS.

Machado will shift. Profar will stuck.

by crawdaddy on Feb 13, 2012 7:58 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

if machado shift to 3B, who is going to play ss in the future for the O's!

why the Orioles did not sign jurickson profar at that time, when they signed schoop? or we are going to draft one? at the other hand, we have a prospect named alexander mercedes, but i don’t know how good he is!

by gio2chat on Feb 13, 2012 8:08 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t think the Orioles’ SS of the future is in the organization.

Also…it hurts to see Sano’s name. Keep thinking Garret Atkins.

by crawdaddy on Feb 13, 2012 8:14 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Who else do the O's have at SS?

Anyone interesting? Schoop maybe? If the consensus is that Machado moves off SS, why not slot Schoop in there?

Please come back Koji, we miss you.

I think Schoop is less likely than Machado to stick at SS.

Really best plan at moment is to try to let Machado surprise.

Good lord the Padres have 10 players on that list

AL East –
Yankees – 4 players (29, 40,63,99)
Tampa Bay – 2 Players (1, 65)
Toronto – 5 players (16, 28, 54, 68, 93)

Padres – 10 Players
Athletics – 7 Players
Pirates – 6 Players
Blue Jays, Rangers, Rockies, Cardinals, Roylas – 5 Players

by Benhem612 on Feb 13, 2012 8:49 AM EST up reply actions

I'm coming around on Cespedes

6 years at 40? Seems worth it. And I sure would like another young OF bat.

by dan o'hare on Feb 13, 2012 7:16 AM EST reply actions

If we sign a big IFA, it should be Soler.

He’s younger, as talented according to some, and would cost half that. Cespedes is already 26; that’s his prime years. Reports say he can’t hit a curveball and nearly everyone thinks he’ll need at least some time in AAA. My bet is he won’t be truly ready and at least average this year. That makes it 5/40 for someone who compares to Adam Jones. Worth it? Probably. Risky? Hell yes. Are there better options out there? Definitely.

Please come back Koji, we miss you.

this

I would really like to see the O’s get Soler. OF is one of the weak spots in the minors and hopefully DD can address that.

I only rec daveh873. Not because he is the best poster on SB Nation, but because the NY Football Giants are the best football team in the nation.

by Philly O's on Feb 13, 2012 7:30 AM EST up reply actions

I thought they offered 6 years at under 40

seems worth it to me. And I think we should sign Soler as well. That said, I hope they both can hit a curve.

by dan o'hare on Feb 13, 2012 7:49 AM EST up reply actions

Well, he already stated interest in Miami

I’m sure he’s much less interested in Baltimore. An identical deal won’t get him to the O’s.

by dan o'hare on Feb 13, 2012 8:04 AM EST up reply actions

Purely based on gut speculation and not experience whatsoever

but if Miami is offering 40 and he is expressing interest along with the large cuban population of that area.

To get him to come to the O’s with almost no cuban population, I would be shocked if he came for less than the 60 that folks have been floating around.

11 pitchers for 5 spots seems like a good reason for a contest

Pick the starting rotation (coming out of spring training).

I’d chose Wada, Hammel, Chen, Britton and Arrieta.

It is something crazysilver did on OH, but it was such a bother trying to find it on a message board. I tried to do it last year and it bored me to death. Now, I am trying to get Peace to do it.

There should be an easier way to keep track of these things. Some needs to figure out a database for it and sell it to MLB Trade Rumors.

I'd love to be able to work from home sometimes

Theres nothing about my job that requires me to be in the office 5 days a week, but i was hired into a brand new group and my boss wants everyone in the same place for the time being. I’m hoping in 6 months or so I can pull off at least 1 day a week at home.

by kba26 on Feb 13, 2012 9:12 AM EST up reply actions

Good luck with that.

I’ve been stuck here for two years. Don’t mind being in the office, but I’d love a day a week to work from home. Save myself a lot of time!

by twistedlogic on Feb 13, 2012 9:15 AM EST up reply actions

For me, its that I'm going back and forth to Philly practically every weekend

and I’d love to be able to leave here on Thursday afternoon and not have to be back until Monday morning. Getting to spend 3 days a week in Philly instead of only 2 would be really nice.

by kba26 on Feb 13, 2012 9:17 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, this.

It’s sort of a shame that telecommuting being trendy circa early 2000s has sorta died down. I’m in a similar situation, and I’d love to just switch it to ‘come into the office as needed’ even, for big meetings etc, instead of just one day a week from home.

But there are time accountability issues (ie: you need to set performance metrics based on what someone accomplishes instead of which hours they were in the office, etc) and, honestly, personnel issues when you have some people who can pull off that sort of thing vs those who can’t and think you’re doing no work while staying at home :P

Maybe one day…

by zsiv on Feb 13, 2012 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

I think that it will become more common place

when the at home computers utilize cameras to have facial recognition. That way the computer could log the time actually spent in front of the computer / in conjunction with the performance metrics set. Ideally computer face time shouldn’t matter as long as workload is completed but companies are a long way off from recognizing quality over quantity of hours worked.

The U.S. Patent Office is actually way ahead on this

After you work there for a couple years as an examiner, you can be moved to a program where you work from home at least 4 days a week and only come into the actual patent office when you have meetings. They have a number of offices set up that aren’t assigned to any particular examiner, but can be reserved for when you do need to actually be on site. The just released a study finding that people in the program actually work 66 hours more per year and complete 3.5 more application reviews than people who physically report to the patent office, and they save something like 16 million dollars a year in the process.

by kba26 on Feb 13, 2012 9:35 AM EST up reply actions

Sounds reasonable

It’s easy to put in extra hours and not feel it under that sort of arrangement because you aren’t commuting and you don’t have that ‘get out of the office finally’ stigma at the end of the day – you can drop an extra hour on a project if need be and it’s no big thing because you just close up shop and you’re already at home when you’re finished.

Of course, flipside, there’s always those people who would abuse a program like this. They’ve gotta be willing to cut people who don’t produce.

My cousin's husband does this.

He lives in Fredericksburg and usually only goes into DC one day a week for like an hour.

by Steve. on Feb 13, 2012 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah.

I’ve gotten to work from home one day per week for about six months now. I have a very light workload – like, the average day consists of me doing maybe an hour of actual work and figuring out how to kill the rest of the day – so I’m pretty sure our group could function just fine with half the people. (Your tax dollars at work!) Yet management gets all worried about accountability on telework, and we have to send end-of-day reports saying what we did every telework day. It’s absurd.

I’ve worked mostly at home since ‘05. There’s a lot I don’t like about my job, but it would be a tough transition to go back in an office every day.

As someone with social issues

I wish I could work in an office. It would put me around people I’d have reason to interact with.

by Holymittens on Feb 13, 2012 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

That is the definite downside. There’s only a few people that I’m really friends with and on my rare visits into the office I either don’t know a lot of people or have trouble remember who’s who.

But waking up at 8:29 and not being late for work…awesome.

by BrianS on Feb 13, 2012 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

Technically I’m 8:30-5:30 but as long as my work gets done I can get away with fudging that. The other bad thing about working from home, in my opinion, is that it makes it easier to work really long hours.

by BrianS on Feb 13, 2012 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

I definitely work strange hours, but I was doing that even when I was going into the office.

by O'sFan21 on Feb 13, 2012 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

I have the same thing.

I’m 830-5pm (I usually eat at my desk), but as long as I’m done with my work, I can get away with most any time (as long as I work 8-9 hours). Some people come in at almost 10am. I just prefer to get there early so I can get home and run before Caps and O’s games come on.

is it common to see a jump in pitch speeds

So the O's were 25th in the Majors last year in Stolen Bases

For a team full of young players speed is no where to be found…I don’t see the O’s getting any better in steals in 2012.

Now they were 81/106 in stolen base attempts, which is a higher success rate than I would have guess’d. Should they try to run more in 2012?

by IggesRule13 on Feb 13, 2012 9:58 AM EST reply actions

I also thought some of it had to do with our getting on base

last year there were only a couple options -
1. Hit a homerun
2. Vlad stretches a triple into a single
3. hit into a double play

Andy Reid, as always...but not to me.

Trying to piece together all the information I have read and heard on the demise of the Eagles this year points to 2 places for me.

1. The downfall of the Eagles was TO’s. Easy. Carelessness play by the players (Vick mostly) lead to way to many opportunities for teams to come back when the Eagles were ahead.

2. The defense didn’t buy in Rivera’s play calling until pretty late in the season, which lead to indecisive decisions on the field and caused guys to be lax in their approach in being aggressive in the secondary (tackling was HORRIBLE).

3.The Eagles were ANTI-Jeter (not clutch). They ran up and down the field the first 3 quarters of the game but when it came to crunch time they decided they would drop TD passes, throw interceptions, fumble, or the defense would fold like a $2 suitcase.

They might also be more likely to run a bit more in that situation

which would probably be a good thing for the Eagles.

by daveh873 on Feb 13, 2012 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

Well I think Jackson should be back for every kickoff/punt.

So his added value in those areas helps.

I will disagree with you on Avant comparison. Desean Jackson’s game changing ability is such a superlative attribute that can’t be measured by “statistics.” Avant may be able to fulfill the void left in the stat sheet every game but you’ll never see any game changers from him.

Actually Avant (despite being super reliable) had one of the biggest drops and a fumbleof the season at the end of a game.

So much crazy stupid stuff (Ronnie Brown) happened with the Eagles this year that I don’t know what to expect next year.

by IggesRule13 on Feb 13, 2012 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not arguing Jackson isn't better than Avant

I’m saying he’s not so much better than Avant that he’s worth the enormous amount of additional money they would have to spend, especially when that money could be used to shore up areas that are of much more concern (i.e. Linebacker).

Almost all of this could be solved simply by running the ball, especially when you have one of the best backs in the league, so i think this one points back to Andy as well.

I hate how Desean Jackson is being convinced that he needs a long term contract. It would be stupid of a team to give him one b/c the very thing that makes him susceptible to injury is what makes him a special player.

He has shown for the last two years that if he doesn’t give 100 percent he is barely an average player. Sure, it leaves him open to injury but it also makes him worth 1/2 year contracts for upwards of 10 million.

He needs to nut the fuck up and play the game like he can and tell his agent to GTFO.

In a desktop, these days you want the following:

Quad core processor (or better if you can get it). 8 gigs of ram (if you’re interested in keeping the computer for a few years. This is going to be the normal amount soon, and especially if you’re trying to do CAD) and a decent video card, but there are too many options to generally say what you’d want.

Open office is viable depending on what you use office for. If you just do the basics, then yeah it’s totally viable. Heck Google documents is viable if you just do the basics. And there are a bunch of other viable free options out there too.

DDR3 RAM is faster

Though the speed of the RAM probably won’t be TOO important if you’re not doing heavy gaming. But still, better to get DDR3 than DDR2. Most good mobos use DDR3 these days anyway.

I would use LibreOffice instead of Open Office

Libre Office is a developmental fork of Open Office and is better in most respects.

DaveAA is right in the other cases. Quad core, 8 GB of RAM, and a decent graphics card. A 1TB HDD is not too expensive right now and should keep you good on space for a while.

The most important thing is to get something that is upgradable. A lot of pre-made computers have little in the room for expansion and upgrades. You do not want that.

KLaw vs. Yoo Jee-ho on Kim Seong-Min

Keith Law tweet:

The O’s gave $550K to a 5’9" Korean HS lefty throwing 80-83 with no feel for a breaking ball. Nice use of savings from cutting pro scouting.

Yoo Jee-ho in the Camden Depot article:

Kim was considered the top lefty in high schools over here and since he had another high school season ahead of him (before the Baltimore deal), local scouts felt that Kim could improve even more and eventually become a first-round draft choice in the KBO. His fastball tops out at about 89-90 miles per hour, and he also throws above-average changeup and curve. Obviously not overpowering, but he’s got decent command. Any left-hander with his upside and stuff is a valued commodity here, but I myself was surprised to see him snatched up by a major league team. Maybe the O’s scouts saw something in him.

That’s a sizeable disagreement about the kid’s stuff. Guess which one of these writers lives in S. Korea and covers sports for its largest news organization?

I don’t think there are a lot of pitchers who “sit” 80-83" and top out at 89.

And no, competing scouting reports aren’t anything new. Neither is Law’s hard-on for trashing the Orioles decisions with less than complete information.

The whole point of the post, in fact, was that there are two competing reports, and one of them seems far more likely to be accurate.

He's no more or less dismissive toward the Os than any other team that makes a bunch of questionable moves

by Holymittens on Feb 13, 2012 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

Even the reporter quoted in the article said he was surprised that a Major League team signed the kid.

Yes, he did. In a fairly even-handed way. When you’re trying to think outside the box and exploit market inefficiencies, it stands to reason that you’re going to raise eyebrows. If you don’t, you’re probably not actually thinking outside the box. I’m sure when Billy Beane was originally signing fat catchers with high OPS, people were questioning the moves.

It’s just a matter of tone, professionalism, and admitting one’s own bias and/or fallibility. What Law does is not only present things with tremendous bias, but presents them with a level of derision that strikes me as unprofessional and primarily designed to draw traffic. He’s the Glenn Beck of sportspundits.

DD has been on the job for three months and has done nothing that merits such overwhelming dismissal. I’m not saying DD’s moves aren’t open to criticism—again, it’s the vitriol and the tone of the criticism I’m talking about.

The Guthrie trade is perfect example. By and large the overall reaction multiple media outlets has been varied, with roughly even percentages of people voting slightly O’s / it’s a wash / slightly Rockies. Keith Law, on the other hand, posts things like,

I do enjoy watching the contortions required to try to make this move anything other than absurd for the Orioles, though.

“Anything other than absurd”? Really?

Of course, he has to say these things now, because his own narrative is “no candidate with an ounce of self-respect will take the Orioles job”, so he has to back that up by tearing down Duquette.

He’s biased. And even though I have no doubt he’s right a lot of the time, something like the Seong signing makes that bias ever clearer. He’s so eager to bash the team and to get his tweet out, he can’t be bothered to ask himself if he even knows anything about the situation or the player involved. And that bias filters everything I hear from him now.

Keith Law is a hack.

My problem with Cespedes is that he is now hitting his prime but hasn't proven

If there’s a year that has to be spent in AAA, that’s 25% of the deal, and he’s 27 after that year. Good luck to him though, except for when he’s playing the Orioles. Not that he’ll need luck against the Orioles, because the Orioles suck in and against Oakland anyway.

Excel questions...

I have an Excel with two sheets in it. The first sheet is a summation sheet. The second sheet is where my data sits.

Now, picture a 10 column by 25 row table. Random (for all intents and purposes, anyway) cells have ‘X’ in them.

On my summation sheet, I need formulas to calculate:
1) The total number of rows on the data sheet, but done in such a manner so that when I add rows 26, 27, etc. the summation sheet automatically updates.
2) The number of X’s in each column on the data sheet (with it automatically updating for new rows added).

If you had asked this like.....two months ago...I could have answered this.

I’d have to look, but I think I know what you’re getting at. For number two, you can just have it count whether or not an X exists and then sum the Xs.

With a SUMIF...

Yep.

I forgot how to keep it open though, so you can keep adding rows and add that automatically to the sum.

by twistedlogic on Feb 13, 2012 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

this, copy the formula down much further than your current sheet goes

so when you add a new row it is still calculating (countif function)

countif(a23,“x”) then just sum at the bottom of the column of countif functions.

a1 =x b1= countif(a1,“x”)
a2 =0 b2 = countif (a2,“x”)
a3 = x b3 = countif (a3,“x”)
b45= sum(b1:b44)

by Benhem612 on Feb 13, 2012 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

pivot

just create a pivot. expand the area well beyond what you need. refresh when you need to use it again.

1) set it to count values (some value in every row)
2) filter the column with “x” in the pivot to show only values with x, then set the formula to count values

or use countif functions

Here is what you do.

1) if you create your sum function. it should update when you add in rows, for example =sum(A1:A100). if you insert rows into A98, A99 the sum will become =sum(A1:A102) automatically.

2) =countif (“range”,“x”)

I have mostly given up soda.

However, I relapse from time to time (this weekend I had 4 Cokes because my wife bought some of the glass bottles).

In China, I drank probably two liters of soda each day, but I was younger and more active so my metabolism could handle it. When I came back, I ditched the soda after 6 months and replaced it with iced tea. Unfortunately, that stuff still has a metric butt-ton of sugar in it. Over the past 6 months, I’ve slowly weened myself off of iced tea to drinking Chinese hot tea or water for 95% of my liquid intake (5% is beer).

It’s not easy. Once you get ‘addicted’ to it, even seeing a bottle makes you want to drink it. Soda is sugary… it’s caffeinated… it’s packaged to make you crave it. Go easy on your friend. Soda is not good for you and it is an incredibly difficult habit to break.

by Tezcatlipoca on Feb 13, 2012 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think it's addictive like that, I guess

because in my experience, when I wanted to stop drinking soda, I just said “no thanks” when somebody asked me if I wanted a soda. And I didn’t put the dollar into the machine to buy one any more. It’s not like crack!

by DaveAA on Feb 13, 2012 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

I think it depends on a lot of other factors.

If you’re not getting enough sleep, subconsciously substituting soda for food occasionally, mildly depressed and subconsciously seeking out the little sugar highs, etc., then it’s easy to go from a 20 oz. bottle once or twice a week to a couple of two liters a week or more, and then have some trouble getting off of it without addressing the other issues.

I actually started a(nother) no-soda kick about a week ago myself, and yeah, it’s only particularly tough when the stuff is around. If I don’t buy soda, I don’t miss it much. Then I go see family for a week and there’s soda in the house, and I miss it when I’m back to working.

I also don’t have a problem when it’s not around.

The problem is, soda is practically omnipresent in American life. If I go into a grocery store, I avoid that aisle like it’s the fucking plague. My wife loves Coke, but typically will not buy it because she knows how I am. This weekend was just an issue of getting glass bottles of Coke, which are relatively rare (and taste so, so, so much better).

by Tezcatlipoca on Feb 13, 2012 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

That's another line of thinking I think is total crap.

by DaveAA on Feb 13, 2012 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

I think people THINK they can tell the difference, but they really can't.

NPR just did a story recently showing that wine tasters mostly couldn’t tell the difference between red and white wine at room temperature, and that most people couldn’t tell the difference between dog food and liver pate if it was presented correctly.

by DaveAA on Feb 13, 2012 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

Fair enough.

I claim no scientific basis for my belief that Coke from glass bottles tastes better than Coke from plastic bottles or aluminum cans.

However, my overall point on this topic is that soda addiction is very psychological. That shit gets in your head. It’s probably the same with feeling that there’s a different taste based on packaging.

Chemically, its practically identical to sucrose

and theres no evidence that it has any different health effects. Where Corn syrup has a negative impact though, is socially. Corn subsidies make its unreasonably cheap to sweeten things, which leads to increased obesity. Theres nothing harmful about corn syrup per se, the issue is with the quantities its consumed in.

Michael Pollan

disagrees.

It’s probably no coincidence that the wholesale switch to corn sweeteners in the 1980′s marks the beginning of the epidemic of obesity and Type 2 diabetes in this country. Sweetness became so cheap that soft drink makers, rather than lower their prices, super-sized their serving portions and marketing budgets. Thousands of new sweetened snack foods hit the market, and the amount of fructose in our diets soared.

This would be bad enough for the American waistline, but there’s also preliminary research suggesting that high-fructose corn syrup is metabolized differently than other sugars, making it potentially more harmful. A recent study at the University of Minnesota found that a diet high in fructose (as compared to glucose) elevates triglyceride levels in men shortly after eating, a phenomenon that has been linked to an increased risk of obesity and heart disease. Little is known about the health effects of eating animals that have themselves eaten so much corn, but in the case of cattle, researchers have found that corn-fed beef is higher in saturated fats than grass-fed beef.

That’s from 10 years ago. Presumably there is more evidence now one way or the other.

A recent study at the University of Minnesota found that a diet high in fructose (as compared to glucose) elevates triglyceride levels in men shortly after eating, a phenomenon that has been linked to an increased risk of obesity and heart disease.

Well this part i take issue with. HFCS used in soft drinks is 42% fructose. Table sugar is 50% fructose.

by kba26 on Feb 13, 2012 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

first off

the majority of soft drinks use 55% fructose, not 42%.

second, the more major soft drink issue is about larger drinks. when I grew up, soda came in 12 oz or 8oz cans and 7oz bottles. now 16-20oz is the norm, 12 oz is harder to find, and 8oz has disappeared. consumers will almost always “finish the soda” because they believe they’ve paid for it. hence, we’re consuming far more sugar because of the subsidization of HFCS.

Wikipedia says it's 55%.

not sure what link you’re looking at, but this says 55, and if you google HFCS 55 a ton of soft drinks will come up.

And what is your grammatically-challenged quote from? There is not consensus agreement that there is “nothing harmful about corn syrus per se.”

It doesn’t stimulate insulin and it may well lead to high triglycerides since it’s broken down in the liver instead of the pancreas:

Fructose is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract by a different mechanism than that for glucose. Glucose stimulates insulin release from the isolated pancreas, but fructose does not. Fructose is metabolized primarily in the liver. Once inside the liver cell, fructose can enter the pathways that provide glycerol, the backbone for triacylglycerol.

It isn't the Old Line State for nothing.

An odd quirk of being from Maryland is that I visit southern states and they laugh at me for talking fast and being a northerner, and go to the northern states and they laugh at me for clearly being a southerner.

by Benhem612 on Feb 13, 2012 1:22 PM EST up reply actions

The Old Line State actually has nothing to do with the Mason-Dixon Line.

In the Revolutionary War, the Battle for Long Island was this close to being a complete disaster for Washington and the Americans. They were about to get hit on their flank by like 10,000 men. Washington had to get the bulk of his army to retreat.

The rear guard? That would be a regiment of 400 Marylanders. They attacked a British-fortified house six consecutive times to gum up the pursuit of the main body of the army, outnumbered more than five to one. More than half of them were killed, most of the survivors were wounded or captured. Washington observed this from a distance, and of the Maryland Line, legend holds that he said, “Good God, what brave fellows I must this day lose!”

So Maryland is, to this day, the Old Line State.

When you eat anything, acid in your mouth builds up and softens the enamel on your teeth. If you immediately go brush after eating, you more easily wear the enamel on your teeth away, which creates crevices for bacteria to grow in and cause cavities.

by O'sFan21 on Feb 14, 2012 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

Except that the Giants aren't actually shitty

Seeing as how they had to beat the “best” teams in the NFL to win the Super Bowl. Sure, they had a shitty part of their season, but that happens when you have more games lost due to injury for your starters than any other team in the league while playing the most difficult schedule in the league. Sure, they lost 4 straight at one point, but they were also at their weakest injury-wise and facing the top 3 teams in the NFC. They got healthier and, surprise, got better. Then went on to finish their year 13-7 with a ring to show for it.

Of course, there’s no excuse for losing twice to the Redskins. Everyone expected the Giants to win those games even though they were heavily depleted by injury because they were still a more talented team. Sometimes shit happens.

Oh, and this championship was luck too, huh? Never would have guessed you’d feel that way…

How does being 9-7 at one point this year make them "shitty"?

At worst that seems just slightly above average (which by definition, it is). They went on to win another 4 games after that, making them 13-7, and they beat the teams with the best records in the league to win the Super Bowl.

I’m sure you’re just trolling, but this isn’t even a debatable viewpoint. You can say they weren’t the best team in the league and that can be debated, but there’s absolutely nothing to support them being called an overall “shitty” team.

I don't know why you're making this about more than the Giants

I dislike almost every other team in the league, some as much as the Giants, and I don’t attribute it to luck or hot streaks when they win unless it was due to luck/hot streaks.

The only comparable is when the SF Giants won the WS and I think they were lucky and got hot at the right time too, but they at least had a good regular season albeit in a shitty division.

I sure hope so, but hopefully they’ll be a dominant team instead. That would be more fun, so I wouldn’t have to deal with stuff like this. Must be annoying, despite the championship.

by O'sFan21 on Feb 15, 2012 11:34 PM EST up reply actions

You're the same guy that tried to make a case that Derek Jeter's entire career was just lucky

And the only person I’ve had to “deal with stuff like this from” is you, despite having plenty of Eagles, Redskins, and Cowboys fan friends. You’re the only one trying to explain it away because you’re the only one that constantly cries about how everyone else is lucky.

Fact is, despite all their adversity, they finished the season above average, made the playoffs, and went on the road and defeated 4 of the best teams in the league in their own homes to win a championship. they finished the year 13-7. If you can’t see how that isn’t shitty, then you are wearing some brown-colored glasses.

Playoffs are still 20% of the season in football.

Only 11% in baseball.

Also, they beat the Pats in the RS and came within 3 of the Packers in the RS.

You also keep saying they were lucky during the playoffs, but what actually happened was they were cold during the regular season, they were hurt and lost some close games. They got healthy in the playoff and performed to their true talent level.

Their 4 game losing streak is the same sample size as the playoffs

so if you’re so eager to throw out the 4 games against the top teams in football, we can just as easily throw out the 4 games in a row they lost in the middle of the season (also mostly against the other top teams in football, and while they were the most injured team in the NFL..

And again, you’re throwing out the fact that they played the toughest NFL schedule while being the team hardest hit by injuries in the NFL. You’re choosing to ignore that so you can try to make your case. It’s the same reason we know that last year’s St. Louis Cardinals 90 win team =/= last years Boston 90 win team. You can’t throw out level of competition or injuries to key players, unless you want to make a total bullshit claim.

"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower

by daveh873 on Feb 16, 2012 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

I phrased it poorly

Their starters lost more games to injury than any team in the NFL. Basically, if you add up all the games missed due to injury by starters, the Giants have the biggest number.

And that doesn’t take into account all the games missed by guys that were backups but would have been starting once the actual starters went down.

"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower

by daveh873 on Feb 16, 2012 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

Ah

I’m not sure that’s necessarily the best way to determine whether a team is hardest hit by injury. Just off the top of my head I think Indy might have been harder hit by injury…

by O'sFan21 on Feb 16, 2012 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

Well losing Peyton is huge

and that’s why that team won 2 games. But the Giants had 5 CBs go down to injury (and they were out at the same time). They lost their starting middle LB for the year, lost their top 2 draft picks before the season, their starting DT, their starting OL, their 3rd WR… it goes on. On top of that, players like Tuck, Osi, and Bradshaw all missed games.

To top it off, they finished with the greatest strength of schedule, meaning their opponents won more total games and lost fewer total games than anyone else’s opponents.

So yea, when you combine those 2 things and they still manage to go to the playoffs, then you see them when they finally start getting some of their injured players back make the run that they did to end the season, it tells you something. Or you can say it doesn’t tell you anything and believe whatever you want to believe.

with all kinds of things, strength of schedule, making the playoffs, winning the SB, etc. If you include all those things sure they were the most injury ridden team to do that., but that’s a lot different than saying they were the hardest hit by injury.

by O'sFan21 on Feb 16, 2012 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

Well by hardest hit by injury

I just meant their starters missed the most games due to injury. None of the qualifiers are needed.

There’s infatuation, and then there’s love, and society enjoys conflating the two. Second biggest gripe is people posting about their kids five times a day. I’m sure your kids are cool but I don’t need to know that you’re taking them to the dentist this morning. One person I know is pregnant and actually has a baby tracking app where like every week it shows how big the baby is getting and tells you it’s growing fingernails or whatever else.

then I’ll eat my hat.

My brother is always posting these cryptic statuses that are designed to make people ask him what’s wrong. It drives me crazy. If you want to say something or bitch about something, just do it! Don’t be such a twit! I normally just ignore him but a few months ago he made his status, “I don’t want to talk about it.” And I commented, “You obviously DO want to talk about it. I dont generally care who wrote it. The Beatles

were #86 on the Billboard top artists for 2011 and have been in the Billboard 200 (top selling albums including digital and CD sales) almost every year, including 2011. Their last album came out in 1970. I’d say they’re still relevant.

not “Are you saying the Beatles aren’t musically relevant to 17 year olds who work at Dairy Queen?”

But if MP3 sales work better for you, the Beatles have had 11 Top 100 songs since 2010. The Beatles “1” album hit #1on the top digital album charts in 2011.

Rotoworld reports Duquette not interested in Manny!
Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette said Friday that he doesn’t think Manny Ramirez is a fit.
Duquette has played the situation pretty coy until now and the O’s even sent scouts to watch Ramirez take batting practice, but he appears content to move forward with his current roster. All signs are pointing toward Oakland as Ramirez’s most likely landing spot, though they also reportedly have interest in Magglio Ordonez.

They also report the A’s are trying to acquire Koji and sign the Marlboro Man. Maybe they’ll be interested in Kevin Gregg!

If we want to sign Soler, we have to pay more than the Cubs $30 millions, otherwise he’s going to sign with the Cubs or other organisation.

The Orioles have to pay around $45 or $50 millions to get him, in a six or seven year deal. Jorge Soler, Alfredo Despaigne and Yasiel Puig have better skills and Major League projection than Yoennis Céspedes.

thinking you might be responding to my story?

But yes… this wasn’t the first time this guy had done something like that and it wasn’t the last. That was easily the most egregious though. He’s just a douche. He traded a lifetime of rooting for the Orioles to being a Yankees fan around 1998.

well... we were never friends...

He is my friend’s dad, and also the guy who got me my job and was my mentor. So there is that. Also, the only other person in my office who could give two shits about baseball.

Haha, Cespedes signing with the A's.

The Marlins make no sense whatsoever. I know that Cespedes is a big risk, but $22M ($5.5M annually) less than Mark Buehrle? I don’t understand.

Edwin Jackson's flying into Washington. I hear they might sign him.

Please come back Koji, we miss you.

Best Fastballs (Four-Seam) of 2011:
Ryan Franklin and Dale Thayer had the highest strike rate, at 75.0% each, although both threw only slightly more than 100 fastballs. Koji Uehara was third, at 74.5%, while throwing over 500 fastballs.

Reliever Koji Uehara was the only other pitcher besides Papelbon to finish more than two standard deviations above the mean in both fastball swinging-strike rate (13.3%) and overall strike rate (74.5%). He finished the season with an excellent 1.89 wFA/C — actually, slightly better than Papelbon’s. Amazingly, Uehara has been able to maintain excellent fastball numbers despite below-average velocity, throwing his fastball at just 88.6 mph in 2011.

Does this include splitters?

IIRC, Koji’s usual out-pitch was a split-finger.

Well,

“split-finger fastball” is a misnomer. It’s not actually a fastball: it’s similar to a forkball in terms of grips and closer to a change-up in movement and velocity.

by SeanP on Feb 13, 2012 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yea...I know.

I dunno how the pitch F/X classifies it though.

Sorry, didn't realize what you were asking there.

Pitch F/X classifies by movement and velocity, so I couldn’t see splitters being mixed in with fastballs. The author said that they’re going to do separate posts for four seamers, two seamers, cutters, sinkers and various offspeed pitches, so splitters should have their own article.

But on the other hand, Pitch F/X did think that Felix Hernandez threw four 91-mph curveballs in 2010.

by SeanP on Feb 13, 2012 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

As Andrew pointed out to me recently, though,

BIS re-classifies pitch types, and those are what FanGraphs uses. So FG’s data should be much more reliable than straight-from-games classifications.

Ugh...we've reached that time of year where its like 20 degrees in the morning you've gotta wear a heavy coat or freeze your ass off.

Then its like 50 when you leave so its hot as heck on the Metro.

Buster Olney tweet
Vladimir Guerrero has made it known to the Yankees that he wants their DH spot. IMO, Raul Ibanez still the frontrunner to sign w/NYY as DH.

He wants to announce his presence with authority.

We all know Vlad would find a way to hit 40 HRs for the Yankees, because that's the kind of luck Orioles fans have.

if I were a Yankee fan, I would want Damon,

I think he has gas left in the tank unlike Vlad or Ibanez.

If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever

by dfa on Feb 13, 2012 7:07 PM EST up reply actions

I would trade for Jesus Guzman and forget about Damon et al.

Guzman is stuck behind Alonso and he’s the perfect DH since his defensive skills suck.
