come on...It's only been a few months

He hasn’t even had a draft yet. And his hater points out that Fielder was out there for the taking. Who knows what it would have taken to bring fielder here, but it’s not like we just had some loose change lying around.

I just think everyone is still pissed about the guthrie trade.

you have to realize

a lot of people only look at the product at OPCY. As we know, there is a lot more that goes into this organization that the everyday fan doesn’t know about. So I can’t fault them for not knowing who the starting 1B at Delmarva is, so you have to take these comments with a grain of salt. K-Law, on the other hand, is the complete opposite end of the spectrum. Thus the reason why I come here: semi-intelligence with a 1/3 of the snarkiness.

I only rec daveh873. Not because he is the best poster on SB Nation, but because the NY Football Giants are the best football team in the nation.

well yeah

but then they listen to the K’Laws of the world saying the O’s signed some 17 year old kid that cant hit 90 and no feel for a curve and think that was the offseason. their mind is already made up.

semi intelligence and 1/3 snarkiness - I knew I felt comfortable here for a reason!

Duquette’s first off season has been interesting to me. I have felt frusterated at times but also there have been enough signings that intruigue me to make me think that I may just not be seeing the benefit of the other signings. Betemit really got me a lot higher and the not signing manny ramirez also made me happy.

Positives:
Re-organizing the scouting department with a heavy emphasis on international
Wilson betemit – he gets on base!
Jason Hammel – (I have been up and down and was sad to see guts go but I feel this has the potential to be net positive for us)
Chen / Wada – potential pitching at much cheaper than it would be in the states

Negatives:
No major trades to bring in prospects
Blowing smoke about Soler and Cespedes (We go and jump all over some korean kid noone has ever heard of but some how we are 3 weeks behind everyone on soler and cespedes who we are supposedly intersted in)
One too many 5+ ERA / FIP pitchers

Right now I give him a B because I feel like he has made some shrewd moves and needs more time to get his plan in place.

If they sign soler I will gladly eat my hat

that said I wouldn’t be super upset if they didn’t sign soler. What upsets me is the pretending to have interest. When obviously if they have interest they are willing to swoop in and create an international incident to get there first.

by Benhem612 on Feb 15, 2012 8:22 AM EST up reply actions

i think you can throw past experince out the window

I think they are acting too slow getting down there to scout and meet with him (but I thought they already scouted him earlier). I mean if the Cubs want to throw money at him and his price goes up then I guess it is what it is. It’s tough to figure out what is going on based on the contract that cespedes got and I am not 100% sure how this one would really work out. I would overpay for Soler based on the fact the O’s need a legit OF prospect. So to answer your question: probably not. But I think there is a better chance to sign him based on the past 3 months then the previous 3 years.

Long Toss!

Dylan bundy can be given incentive bonuses for every pitcher he gets into shape.

by Benhem612 on Feb 15, 2012 8:03 AM EST up reply actions

I think in about ten years no one will be long tossing…completely different throwing motion.

by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 10:22 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I honestly don't know much about it other then that Bundy

would only go to teams that do that. Is it a fad or something?

by Benhem612 on Feb 15, 2012 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

Successful pitchers have done it and by association it is considered a good training component.

Looking at mechanics…I cannot figure out how it helps with pitching. Different body motion and higher stress levels. I would let my pitchers do it because some of them are nuts about it, but I would not encourage it.

by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 10:41 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Again

it’s only a different body motion and higher stress level if they’re doing it wrong.

by O'sFan21 on Feb 15, 2012 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

It is not possible to throw a ball 150 ft with the same mechanics as you would go through pitching. It just is not biomechanically possible.

by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 11:51 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

The goal is not to use the exact same mechanics

the goal is to use mechanics that support the mechanics that you use on the mound. It’s certainly not any higher stress level if you’re doing it correctly.

by O'sFan21 on Feb 15, 2012 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

How do you know for certain?

The only study I know of says the opposite.

by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 1:29 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I am in my phone and have issues sharing links on it. Literally, it would take 5 seconds to do a Google search for it. Glen Fleisig is quite well known and consults for about a third of MLB.

by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 2:03 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Maybe not in my phone…on my phone.

by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 2:04 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

his entire premise is based on the idea that long toss involves a different release point which it doesn’t if you are doing it correctly.

Also the second item that showed up when I searched his name and long toss was an article about how he’s supportive of the Rangers new pitching program which includes lots of long toss.

by O'sFan21 on Feb 15, 2012 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

is it possible to throw a ball 300 yards

with the same release point as you would a normal pitch?

by Benhem612 on Feb 15, 2012 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

No

but Bundy’s program is considered extreme even by those who advocate long toss.

by O'sFan21 on Feb 15, 2012 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

They're not necessarily teaching it like Bundy

who from my understanding likes to throw a LOT longer than most teams are comfortable with, but 150 feet like you mention is barely considered long toss by anybody. Bundy I believe is throwing 300+ regularly and for lots of throws.

by O'sFan21 on Feb 15, 2012 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

IIRC, mechanics fall apart after 150 or so. 300 would have the same problem.

by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 1:30 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

All depends how you do it.

If you’re putting a lot of loft under it then it’s problematic. The goal of long toss done correctly is to get as far as you can without changing release point. Lots of guys will back up and put a hat 15-20 feet in front of them and have their partner try to hit it so they’re focusing on not throwing up.

by O'sFan21 on Feb 15, 2012 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

I cannot see how release point can physically stay the same if the angle of the flight path changes to that extent. Mechanically and ballistically it just doesn’t make sense to me.

by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 2:01 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

The angle of the flight path should not change.

I just said you want to keep the release point the same.

by O'sFan21 on Feb 15, 2012 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

Not if you do it correctly.

Which is the mistake most people used to make. Professionals are generally not doing it the wrong way.

by O'sFan21 on Feb 15, 2012 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

I think Fleisig did a paper on this with pitchers who were throwing ‘properly.’

by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 11:53 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

pitchers get hurt all the time – I wouldn’t necessarily put this on them.

Everyone's got something to say about it, that's for sure.

The thing about V-Day is that it’s a pissing contest for (most) girls. They want to show off what their man has done for them on Facebook, at work, wherever. So from the bro’s perspective, you have to either A) outspend your fellow bro’s lavishly, or B) put a little thought into it and get creative. One of my favorite things that I saw on FB yesterday was that this guy had tea light candles arranged on the floor to say “I love you” when the girl walked in after work. That was genius. $10 or so and you’ve bested some dude who spent $100 on a floral arrangement.

If you didn’t half-ass it and your gf gets mad at you for not giving her more, then there’s a problem.

Nice.

Our main receptionist is on vacation this week, and now I’m thinking she might have planned it this way. Between the flowers, balloons, glass vases, teddy bears, etc., she was looking at hauling at least 500 pounds of junk into the building.

I went to the break room on another floor and some chick had her man in there with her! Having lunch! He was wearing a red t-shirt.

No no no

This is exactly how the “closer” should be done. You throw out a guy in the 9th inning based on the situation, not because he’s the “closer”. Are you up by 3 runs with the bottom of the lineup coming up? Fuck it, call in Kevin Gregg.

Are you up by 1 with the heart of the lineup coming up? He comes JJ. Unless you used him back in the 7th when you were tied and they had men on 1st and 3rd with one out and you used him to get out of the jam.

by Holymittens on Feb 15, 2012 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

Really how it works

1. Bring in right handed relief pitcher
2. Right handed Pitcher does beautifully for 1.5 innings
3. Take him out and put in a 5+ era pitcher because he is left handed
4. lose ball game

GO WITH THE HOT HAND.

I guess I am not attched to O’s prospects as other people are. Martin might become a MLB bullpen arm but the O’s aren’t going to miss him. Henson, meh. There are many meh players the O’s can add to the minors to fill those two voids. So at the end of the day, if Dana is cut then it was just a wash and this one trade really won’t have an effect on the direction of the club.

Dylan Bundy says that his brother is... wait for it... in the best shape of his life!

http://www.masnsports.com/steve_melewski/2012/02/from-owasso-to-the-orioles-bundy-readies-for-first-pro-season.html

Some quotes:

“Bobby looks great, probably in the best shape I’ve seen him ever. His arm feels great. Going into spring, I think Bobby is going to have a great year. He is healthy and looks good, feeling good about himself and his stuff.”

Even in high school I had some failures in terms of walking people. My goal was to have zero walks in 11 starts last year. That didn’t happen, I had five. Failure is what drives you to succeed. Learn what you did wrong and fix it in the next start. That is the good thing about pitching. You have four days to learn about what you did wrong in the previous outing.”

there is a reason capital gains are taxed less

No one wants to ask why. But capital gains are an investment, which creates other people’s jobs. Its incentivized to create more jobs.

Cap Gains are taxed less

because the people who pass and sign the laws get them. And not to start yet another political discussion where we call each other terrible names, but there’s a pretty good amount of research that shows, at least during the last 30 years, tax cuts on businesses & the wealthy have not led to the direct creation of jobs. They just keep the money.

tax cuts on business' are completely different than those on the wealthy

in that I am more for the one than the other. I really am for rich people getting taxed more, but that doesn’t change the fact that cap gains do, in themselves, create jobs. Wealthy people don’t, investments do. And as for only rich people making investments, that just isn’t true. They do it on a larger scale, but mutual funds and 401ks are both investments (although not taxed), and middle class do invest elsewhere as well. SO raising the cap. gains taxes is not just taxing the rich

by mdterps0325 on Feb 15, 2012 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

that doesn’t change the fact that cap gains do, in themselves, create jobs.

There is plenty of evidence that says this is flat-out not true. The capital gains rate has fluctuated throughout history without a corresponding change in investment rates.

by kba26 on Feb 15, 2012 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

your arguement

says that even with higher taxes, people will invest the same. Which, fine, if true, tax the cap. gains more. But your arguement does not state anything about the correlation between investment and job creation, which I think is obviously enough the case.

by mdterps0325 on Feb 15, 2012 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

Lots of investing has no impact on job creation

If i go out today and buy stock in a publicly traded company, odds are the company never sees any of that money and its operation is entirely unaffected by my purchase.

by kba26 on Feb 15, 2012 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

....why not?

If it is because your investment is marginal in proportion to the company, then imagine if you invested more.

Because unless its an IPO or a similiar stock offering

You aren’t buying that share from the company itself, you’re buying it from a 3rd party.

by kba26 on Feb 15, 2012 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

hmm never thought about it like that

I’m looking into seeing if I still have an arguement lol, but doesn’t your investment inflate the value of the stock, thus allowing the company to liquidate more efficiently if they wish to expand? Im a college (non econ) student, so I really am trying to get a hang of these things

by mdterps0325 on Feb 15, 2012 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

The company has spent the money from a stock offering long before you buy the stock

and often to prepare for an IPO or follow-up stock offering they are CUTTING jobs rather than adding jobs to make the company more attractive to investors. Afterall, investors give a flying fuck about anything other than profits and dividends and the more people you employ and the more you pay them the lower both of those are going to be. Investors are clearly interested in as thin employment as possible.

As far as i know: A Roth 401k/IRA you pay ordinary income taxes on contributions, but then don't pay anything after on withdrawn contributions or gains

a normal 401k you can do on either a before-tax basis, where i think you pay ordinary income on all withdrawals, or after-tax, where you pay ordinary income on contributions at the time you contribute them, but then only pay ordinary income taxes on gains when you withdraw them. Theres no reason to do a after-tax 401k if you’re eligible for a comparable Roth.

A Roth 401k yes you've paid taxes already

but the vast majority of 401ks are auto-deductions from your paycheck where you don’t pay taxes on contributions and you pay taxes on gains when you make withdrawals in retirement.

I think the only reason to do it is if you’ve already maxed out your Roth (contribution maximum is not very high) and want to continue putting more toward retirement, but I couldn’t swear that once you’ve hit the Roth IRA max that you can continue putting into another after-tax 401k deal.

by O'sFan21 on Feb 15, 2012 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

Don't you pay taxes

on your contributions as well as gains (i.e., the whole withdrawal) when you withdraw from a 401(k) in retirement? Or are we just using the words differently?

It depends on the 401(k)

if you set it up on a before-tax basis, where you would pay taxes on the contributions as well as the gains at when you withdraw. But you can also do it as a after-tax or Roth 401k, where you pay the taxes on your contributions when you contribute them.

some comments of Jorge Arangure Jr about Orioles' international effort are out of base

but also some Orioles’ fans don’t understand yet. The problem of Orioles scouting department is not that they don’t identify the top prospects, but ‘AFTER IDENTIFYING ’ those top prospects, the Orioles organisation don’t want to pay the signing bonus to get these top prospects.

It’s about ’Money Priority" ! Example; the Orioles front office gives priority in signing an old player for one million and not signing two top prospects with that money. For example; Red Sox number one prospect, Xander Bogaerts signing bonus only 450K.

The Orioles don’t give priority in signing top prospects. Hopefully with the new Orioles management, things are gonna change. But they must now resolve another the problem; Last year, I heard an Orioles scout saying to some prospects; You guys have a lot of talent, but the Orioles has decided not to sign a lot of prospects this year, because of the Bluefiled Affiliation problem. The Orioles are not going to sign you! They are not going to sign the prospects because there is no place for them.

He said;

Jorge Arangure Jr: It’s rare when I make a trip to Latin America and don’t see a Rangers scout at a workout. It’s rare when I’m in Latin America and I don’t see one of their top execs there. They spend the money, but they do so after having done the work.

Of course, you don’t see them, becuase in these days every decent baseball fan or amateur scout know where the top prospects are. Example; Jorge Soler and others played 2010 IBAF AAA World Championship in Edmonton Canada. Little league teams of around the world play at Williamsport, every year. The IBAF also has organized a littleleague World Championship. A decent organisation has a book with all those names; from the kids, Jose Matos(Cuba), Anthonia(Netherlands), Isaac Paredes(Mexico) till Jorge Soler.

B.T.W; The Texas Rangers has never signed a prospect from Curacao, before Jurickson Profar. On the other hand, the Orioles are signing players from Curacao since 1982! That’s 30 years relationship! And the Rangers, you don’t see them, only at the signings!

Why would Bluefield be an issue? No foreign player would go there upon signing.

Fun idea for CC

…based on reading the Eveland comments above.

Sometimes the FO makes moves that seem incredibly, obviously head-shaking to us, but somehow resonate with the local media and less-informed (yes, I said it) fans. Like, they’ll sign someone like Kevin Millwood, and Britt will say, “the Orioles filled their urgent need for an innings eater,” and guys on Schmuck’s blog are talking about his wins or something, and all of us (or at least many of us) are having our heads explode.

IN light of this, it would be interesting to CC crowdsource an official reaction to each of DD’s major moves this offseason. We would have a series called “CC reacts to…..” and then each move: “…the Guthrie trade”, “… the Eveland trade”, …. “the Betemit acquistion, etc.”

Each post would have someone write a “pro” position, and someone write a “con” position. And then there would be a poll. Do you support this trade/acquistion? There would also be, say, two days of commenting in case people had questions or wanted to argue other points—but comments would then be closed so ridiculous bickering doesn’t go on forever.

At the end of the season, we publish a summary post that looks back at all of the moves/trades and at how they actually panned out, plus our predictions for them, and we grade CC’s collective wisdom.

I guess this is a little similar to doing projections, but cleaner. Each acquisition/trade just gets an up-or-down vote. And if we wind up getting a B+ or A- (as I suspect we might), then DD can float his future ideas past our hive mind. It would also be interesting to see which moves had nearly 50-50 votes (maybe the Guthrie trade?) vs. one-sided votes (maybe the Eveland trade?).

I don’t have time to organize it, but it shouldn’t take that much for someone other mod to post the list of trades/acquisitions and tap people to write the pro/con statements. We’d do two a day until they’re done so that we finish before pitchers and catchers—just to be sure ST performance doesn’t skew anything. And obviously, we’d all have to be honor bound to vote only once on each trade so that the polls are truly representational.

Thoughts?

Big League Stew is doing this thing

Where they are asking a blogger for every baseball team to make a list of the top ten best thing about being a fan of their team. The Reds one was the first to come out and when I read it yesterday I tweeted that I can’t wait to see what’s on the list for the Orioles seeing as how I can’t think of ten myself.

Cut to this morning, when ‘Duk from BLS emails me asking me if I’d like to write the list for the O’s. Heh. Of course I said yes.

So what are the best things about being an Orioles fan? Help me out!

Thorne/Palmer

There was a lot of awesome in that broadcast booth in that last series against Boston. Mostly Gary getting so excited and screaming as loud as he could, sometimes incorrect information, and then Jim Palmer calmly clarifying what happened on the last play.

If you can, go back and listen to Gary’s calls on
1. Andino’s inside the parker (gm 160)
2. Jones to Hardy to Wieters relay to nail Scutaro
3. Reimold’s game-tying double
4. Andino’s game winner

Maybe people that like the Thorne-Palmer thing are in the minority among O’s fans, but I for one, love it.

And Joe Angel.

Good to see Mr. Angel getting some love

I’ll second that listening to him call a game is pretty great, and if you watch with MLB.tv and use the option to overlay the radio broadcast with the MASN broadcast.. excellent.

Cheap tickets, and not in the sarcastic “because we’re terrible, you see!” way – I wouldn’t want to spend the kind of money it’d take to follow the Ravens in person, but you can see tons of games down at Camden without “ticket prices” becoming a significant part of your budget.

I think because of the bay and ocean maryland really is the best place to be in the summer. It is as close to paradise as I have ever experienced. Sailing, crabs, bbq, and baseball. The orioles represent that perfectly content feeling for me. They are the idyllic youth that washes clean the grimy city of reality. The fans are unlike all others. loyal to a fault, with the best sense of humor, their fans are the only ones that are respected by both ny and boston fans alike. And finally hope. Agreed
The orioles represent that perfectly content feeling for me.

If I’ve stuffed myself with beer and crab while sitting in Camden Yards on a beautiful Maryland summer day, it’s almost like winning or losing the game is irrelevant. It just becomes zen… you transcend into a higher consciousness.

Crab feasts are awesome and I love being at the ball park on those days. I haven’t been to too many other ballparks but then to be able to go walk around the harbor I think is very nice.

coupla three things

1) The park, as everybody’s said.
2) Singing “O” in the national anthem.
3) The fact that the games don’t count – watching the Ravens I get sweaty hands and jump off my couch and so on. Watching the O’s is stress-and-excitement free. I can check in on them at any time and know they’ll blow it around the seventh.

I actually think you specifically shouldn’t mention Game 162 last year. This might not be a popular opinion here, but I think taking too much delight in what happened speaks to a pettiness and a sort of pathetic desperation that doesn’t reflect well on us as fans. It was Tampa who stuck it to the Red Sox, anyway. All we did was lose ninety plus games—again—and look pretty brutal doing it.

I would have liked to know how the island got the way it was. Instead of revealing the secrets of the island, they spent half the last season with an alternate timeline that (in my opinion) ended up being complete throwaway along the lines of it “it was all a dream…” (They were already dead and that timeline was the gateway to their afterlife.)

by BrianS on Feb 15, 2012 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

Well, it kinda did reveal how the Island works

Its got some big electromagnetic freaky properties inside it.

I think that’s enough of an explanation. Any way to explain just why it does everything it does would be a disappointment. Magic doesn’t need to be explained. That’s what ruins a lot of fantasy these days; the idea that magic needs to follow these set rules that must be laid down. Explaining how the Island worked would have ended up like the explanation of how the Force worked.

by Holymittens on Feb 15, 2012 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Feb 15, 2012 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, but they just let him go without explaining. The show implied he had powers, but they never explained anything about Walt and his relationship with the Others. We just know that they really wanted him and they let him go because he was too much handle.

It was a metaphor that’s why I put the box in quotes. Lindleoff and Cuse confirmed it was a metaphor in their podcast. yeah, I was going to say...

generally the better degree is in english with a minor or two in Film and creative writing. Film school for the most part doesn’t teach you much, but you might make some good contacts at USC, and you would have to be in the film program there to make those contacts. It’s all about who you know anyway.

Hadn’t thought of that, thank you. Money is obviously the number one constraint and for a non-resident UCLA isn’t much different from USC, I’m hoping upcoming election season paves the way for some sort of paying job.

If money is a problem and you want to get into film, drop out of college and get into film. It’s alot harder to make it as a PA or intern when you are struggling to pay college loans.

It's something I thought of. I want to do another year of school though.

I thought of getting a job with a studio for a year, picking up CA residency while also being involved in film and then going to UCLA at resident tuition. That is an option I am definitely keeping open. The one thing I am trying to avoid is spending to much time at a state (Oregon) school and getting stuck in something I don’t want to do.

At this point I just feel bad for the kid

From the O’s screwing up, the KBO throwing a hissy fit and going a far as banning the kid from playing baseball in his own country, and now MLB for making this even more of a PR nightmare – the second this kid as much as walks a batter, he is screwed and out come the pitch forks. There is going to be so much unneeded pressure on him for playing a game that he loves because a bunch of adults are having a pissing contest. Welcome to adulthood kid. So sad.
