come on...It's only been a few months
He hasn’t even had a draft yet. And his hater points out that Fielder was out there for the taking. Who knows what it would have taken to bring fielder here, but it’s not like we just had some loose change lying around.
I just think everyone is still pissed about the guthrie trade.
you have to realize
a lot of people only look at the product at OPCY. As we know, there is a lot more that goes into this organization that the everyday fan doesn’t know about. So I can’t fault them for not knowing who the starting 1B at Delmarva is, so you have to take these comments with a grain of salt. K-Law, on the other hand, is the complete opposite end of the spectrum. Thus the reason why I come here: semi-intelligence with a 1/3 of the snarkiness.
I only rec daveh873. Not because he is the best poster on SB Nation, but because the NY Football Giants are the best football team in the nation.
I understand
But even the average fan has to realize that things don’t happen overnight. And they haven’t seen his team yet, they haven’t even practiced yet!
well yeah
but then they listen to the K’Laws of the world saying the O’s signed some 17 year old kid that cant hit 90 and no feel for a curve and think that was the offseason. their mind is already made up.
I only rec daveh873. Not because he is the best poster on SB Nation, but because the NY Football Giants are the best football team in the nation.
semi intelligence and 1/3 snarkiness - I knew I felt comfortable here for a reason!
Duquette’s first off season has been interesting to me. I have felt frusterated at times but also there have been enough signings that intruigue me to make me think that I may just not be seeing the benefit of the other signings. Betemit really got me a lot higher and the not signing manny ramirez also made me happy.
Positives:
Re-organizing the scouting department with a heavy emphasis on international
Wilson betemit – he gets on base!
Jason Hammel – (I have been up and down and was sad to see guts go but I feel this has the potential to be net positive for us)
Chen / Wada – potential pitching at much cheaper than it would be in the states
Negatives:
No major trades to bring in prospects
Blowing smoke about Soler and Cespedes (We go and jump all over some korean kid noone has ever heard of but some how we are 3 weeks behind everyone on soler and cespedes who we are supposedly intersted in)
One too many 5+ ERA / FIP pitchers
Right now I give him a B because I feel like he has made some shrewd moves and needs more time to get his plan in place.
Not yet, but the Cubs are favorites now.
Please come back Koji, we miss you.

If they sign soler I will gladly eat my hat
that said I wouldn’t be super upset if they didn’t sign soler. What upsets me is the pretending to have interest. When obviously if they have interest they are willing to swoop in and create an international incident to get there first.
porkpie sounds good
but sounds can be decieving…
i think you can throw past experince out the window
I think they are acting too slow getting down there to scout and meet with him (but I thought they already scouted him earlier). I mean if the Cubs want to throw money at him and his price goes up then I guess it is what it is. It’s tough to figure out what is going on based on the contract that cespedes got and I am not 100% sure how this one would really work out. I would overpay for Soler based on the fact the O’s need a legit OF prospect. So to answer your question: probably not. But I think there is a better chance to sign him based on the past 3 months then the previous 3 years.
I only rec daveh873. Not because he is the best poster on SB Nation, but because the NY Football Giants are the best football team in the nation.
I have to admit it would be pretty cool
having him around the same age as machado and schoop.
I like Jorge Arangure's comment about the Orioles
re: Brazilian academies:
“It takes a very organized team to pull it off. Everything we know suggests the Rays are that type of team. Everything we know about the Orioles suggests they are not.”
When we’re on the outside like this, we have to use Occam’s Razor a lot, you know?
Your cannonball trajectory, it always gave me hope
Definitely
organizational. They seemingly have some process problems where they can’t scout quickly or effectively. The actually scouts might be decent, but something in the process is not allowing them to decision productively.

Long Toss!
Dylan bundy can be given incentive bonuses for every pitcher he gets into shape.
I think in about ten years no one will be long tossing…completely different throwing motion.
by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 10:22 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
I honestly don't know much about it other then that Bundy
would only go to teams that do that. Is it a fad or something?
Successful pitchers have done it and by association it is considered a good training component.
Looking at mechanics…I cannot figure out how it helps with pitching. Different body motion and higher stress levels. I would let my pitchers do it because some of them are nuts about it, but I would not encourage it.
by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 10:41 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
It is not possible to throw a ball 150 ft with the same mechanics as you would go through pitching. It just is not biomechanically possible.
by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 11:51 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
The goal is not to use the exact same mechanics
the goal is to use mechanics that support the mechanics that you use on the mound. It’s certainly not any higher stress level if you’re doing it correctly.
Link?
The most well respected doctors and pitching coaches in the world are still teaching it – including the guys that focus on bio-mechanics like Tom House.
I am in my phone and have issues sharing links on it. Literally, it would take 5 seconds to do a Google search for it. Glen Fleisig is quite well known and consults for about a third of MLB.

Maybe not in my phone…on my phone.
by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 2:04 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
his entire premise is based on the idea that long toss involves a different release point which it doesn’t if you are doing it correctly.
Also the second item that showed up when I searched his name and long toss was an article about how he’s supportive of the Rangers new pitching program which includes lots of long toss.
is it possible to throw a ball 300 yards
with the same release point as you would a normal pitch?
They're not necessarily teaching it like Bundy
who from my understanding likes to throw a LOT longer than most teams are comfortable with, but 150 feet like you mention is barely considered long toss by anybody. Bundy I believe is throwing 300+ regularly and for lots of throws.
IIRC, mechanics fall apart after 150 or so. 300 would have the same problem.
by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 1:30 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
All depends how you do it.
If you’re putting a lot of loft under it then it’s problematic. The goal of long toss done correctly is to get as far as you can without changing release point. Lots of guys will back up and put a hat 15-20 feet in front of them and have their partner try to hit it so they’re focusing on not throwing up.
I cannot see how release point can physically stay the same if the angle of the flight path changes to that extent. Mechanically and ballistically it just doesn’t make sense to me.
by crawdaddy on Feb 15, 2012 2:01 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
The angle of the flight path should not change.
I just said you want to keep the release point the same.
Not if you do it correctly.
Which is the mistake most people used to make. Professionals are generally not doing it the wrong way.
I think Fleisig did a paper on this with pitchers who were throwing ‘properly.’

Britton will attempt to make the rotation this spring, but he could end up at Triple-A Norfolk. He wasn’t going to report to camp with a job waiting for him, no matter his health.

According to Roch's tweets
1. Britton says he might be a couple bullpens behind other guys, but nothing that should hinder his attempts to win a job this spring
2. Britton will throw from 90 feet tomorrow and again on Saturday. Dealing w/ some inflammation. MRI didn’t show any damage
If player health is on the level, I will be rather disappointed if Britton and Arrieta don't both make the OD rotation.

Everyone's got something to say about it, that's for sure.
The thing about V-Day is that it’s a pissing contest for (most) girls. They want to show off what their man has done for them on Facebook, at work, wherever. So from the bro’s perspective, you have to either A) outspend your fellow bro’s lavishly, or B) put a little thought into it and get creative. One of my favorite things that I saw on FB yesterday was that this guy had tea light candles arranged on the floor to say “I love you” when the girl walked in after work. That was genius. $10 or so and you’ve bested some dude who spent $100 on a floral arrangement.
If you didn’t half-ass it and your gf gets mad at you for not giving her more, then there’s a problem.

The only thing that sorta kills me about the whole thing is, once you’ve done something, you’ve definitely gotta best it and/or be more creative the next year. I love the whole getting creative part, but that can get rather difficult.

Out of options...
Robert Andino, Chris Davis, Dana Eveland, Jim Johnson, Jai Miller, Troy Patton, Nolan Reimold, Alfredo Simon, Pedro Strop, Taylor Teagarden
Per MLB Trade Rumors…
Of that list, guys that won't be going anywhere (likely to make the team):
Andino, Davis, Johnson, Strop, Teagarden. Reimold ought to make that group too, but who knows since Buck or somebody seems to hate him.
The fringe guys are Eveland, Miller, and Simon. Eveland and Simon could probably fight for a rotation spot. Who knows. That whole Eveland trade still baffles me.

This is exactly how the “closer” should be done. You throw out a guy in the 9th inning based on the situation, not because he’s the “closer”. Are you up by 3 runs with the bottom of the lineup coming up? Fuck it, call in Kevin Gregg.
Are you up by 1 with the heart of the lineup coming up? He comes JJ. Unless you used him back in the 7th when you were tied and they had men on 1st and 3rd with one out and you used him to get out of the jam.

Really how it works
1. Bring in right handed relief pitcher
2. Right handed Pitcher does beautifully for 1.5 innings
3. Take him out and put in a 5+ era pitcher because he is left handed
4. lose ball game

Dylan Bundy says that his brother is... wait for it... in the best shape of his life!
Some quotes:
“Bobby looks great, probably in the best shape I’ve seen him ever. His arm feels great. Going into spring, I think Bobby is going to have a great year. He is healthy and looks good, feeling good about himself and his stuff.”
“Even in high school I had some failures in terms of walking people. My goal was to have zero walks in 11 starts last year. That didn’t happen, I had five. Failure is what drives you to succeed. Learn what you did wrong and fix it in the next start. That is the good thing about pitching. You have four days to learn about what you did wrong in the previous outing.”
"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver
Re: the Bundy brothers and being in shape...

How the hell do they get away with being able to cut someone scott free, while the O’s get stuck with 10 million dollars for a walking concussion. Things like this are why Scott Boras eats 4 Drew Rosenhaus’ for lunch
it is also why you have nfl players restructuring their 6 year deals every year
pretty much every nfl contract is a one year deal with levels of respect added on.
It's the nature of NFL contracts vs. MLB contracts.
That’s just the way it goes. All these wild numbers get thrown around with NFL contracts but it’s not all guaranteed. Baseball, if you get a contract it’s pretty much guaranteed.

Cap Gains are taxed less
because the people who pass and sign the laws get them. And not to start yet another political discussion where we call each other terrible names, but there’s a pretty good amount of research that shows, at least during the last 30 years, tax cuts on businesses & the wealthy have not led to the direct creation of jobs. They just keep the money.
"If there's a new way, I'll be the first in line. But it better work this time." - Dave Mustaine.
Proud member of Trainyard Sleepers, BECW: S2
tax cuts on business' are completely different than those on the wealthy
in that I am more for the one than the other. I really am for rich people getting taxed more, but that doesn’t change the fact that cap gains do, in themselves, create jobs. Wealthy people don’t, investments do. And as for only rich people making investments, that just isn’t true. They do it on a larger scale, but mutual funds and 401ks are both investments (although not taxed), and middle class do invest elsewhere as well. SO raising the cap. gains taxes is not just taxing the rich
by mdterps0325 on Feb 15, 2012 11:24 AM EST up reply actions
that doesn’t change the fact that cap gains do, in themselves, create jobs.
There is plenty of evidence that says this is flat-out not true. The capital gains rate has fluctuated throughout history without a corresponding change in investment rates.
your arguement
says that even with higher taxes, people will invest the same. Which, fine, if true, tax the cap. gains more. But your arguement does not state anything about the correlation between investment and job creation, which I think is obviously enough the case.
by mdterps0325 on Feb 15, 2012 11:30 AM EST up reply actions
Lots of investing has no impact on job creation
If i go out today and buy stock in a publicly traded company, odds are the company never sees any of that money and its operation is entirely unaffected by my purchase.
....why not?
If it is because your investment is marginal in proportion to the company, then imagine if you invested more.
by mdterps0325 on Feb 15, 2012 11:43 AM EST up reply actions
Because unless its an IPO or a similiar stock offering
You aren’t buying that share from the company itself, you’re buying it from a 3rd party.
hmm never thought about it like that
I’m looking into seeing if I still have an arguement lol, but doesn’t your investment inflate the value of the stock, thus allowing the company to liquidate more efficiently if they wish to expand? Im a college (non econ) student, so I really am trying to get a hang of these things
by mdterps0325 on Feb 15, 2012 12:16 PM EST up reply actions
The company has spent the money from a stock offering long before you buy the stock
and often to prepare for an IPO or follow-up stock offering they are CUTTING jobs rather than adding jobs to make the company more attractive to investors. Afterall, investors give a flying fuck about anything other than profits and dividends and the more people you employ and the more you pay them the lower both of those are going to be. Investors are clearly interested in as thin employment as possible.
All of this...
Companies control very, very little of the items on their P/L and B/S. The things they can control, employment costs, they use as a pool of readily accessible margin if they need to rapidly bump up their relevant financial statements.

Just remember...
you don’t pay capital gains rates on codified retirement accounts. You pay income tax rates.
by TerroristFistJab on Feb 15, 2012 3:51 PM EST up reply actions
Think so?
From what I recall, with a 401(k), you pay no taxes now, but on contributions + gains when withdrawn; with a Roth, you pay on contributions now, but nothing when withdrawn.
"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver
As far as i know: A Roth 401k/IRA you pay ordinary income taxes on contributions, but then don't pay anything after on withdrawn contributions or gains
a normal 401k you can do on either a before-tax basis, where i think you pay ordinary income on all withdrawals, or after-tax, where you pay ordinary income on contributions at the time you contribute them, but then only pay ordinary income taxes on gains when you withdraw them. Theres no reason to do a after-tax 401k if you’re eligible for a comparable Roth.
This is right
...While you're waiting for moments that never come.
by Astronaut Mike Dexter on Feb 15, 2012 4:05 PM EST up reply actions
A Roth 401k yes you've paid taxes already
but the vast majority of 401ks are auto-deductions from your paycheck where you don’t pay taxes on contributions and you pay taxes on gains when you make withdrawals in retirement.
I think the only reason to do it is if you’ve already maxed out your Roth (contribution maximum is not very high) and want to continue putting more toward retirement, but I couldn’t swear that once you’ve hit the Roth IRA max that you can continue putting into another after-tax 401k deal.
Don't you pay taxes
on your contributions as well as gains (i.e., the whole withdrawal) when you withdraw from a 401(k) in retirement? Or are we just using the words differently?
"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver
It depends on the 401(k)
if you set it up on a before-tax basis, where you would pay taxes on the contributions as well as the gains at when you withdraw. But you can also do it as a after-tax or Roth 401k, where you pay the taxes on your contributions when you contribute them.
Right;
I was referring to the 401(k)s O’sFan21 was describing in his first sentence.
"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver
It's a dangerous game to play though because if you try to tax a business more
Or even an individual more, they could just move to a state where the tax laws are more friendly, and then you don’t get anything from them. Didn’t Baltimore raise taxes recently and drive most or all of the Fortune 500 companies out of downtown?

The other side of that coin
is that it’s only people with lots and lots of money making those investments. It’s also people with lots and lots of money who can convince politicians to tax them less.
They are an investment alright
but not one that creates jobs. They are investment that is designed to create more money for the investor and whatever investment firms they are working with.
and if you are talking about the companies being taxed
I’d be all for it, but the truth is it just means higher costs on their product.

My take is
companies aren’t people – they shouldn’t be taxed, nor should they be able to participate in politics.
The owners / investors / and workers making money off of the company should be taxed. Any personal profit by a u.s. citizen should be taxed as income.
Too easy to game that system
“Oh, I didn’t take a salary, I was just reimbursed for housing, food, entertainment, educational, travel and clothing expenses. I can show you receipts for that $25 million!”
Voila, no taxes paid by the corp or the individual.

I listen occasionally to 105.7 in the car
until I get sick of it, which is usually at their first obnoxious commercial segment, or when they take a call from the listeners. Something I found funny, was that no one over there has actually taken the time to look at what happened in Korea with the Kim signing. I’ve heard several different people on the station say, as recently as yesterday, that the Orioles signed Kim when he was “too young”, and that was the problem.
Yes exactly right
I listen until they take a call and then go back to WTMD or my iPod.
I’ll give 105.7 credit for this at least: When they talk about the O’s, they are calling them out for sucking. They don’t shy away like the Sun or MASN (who is obviously biased)

105.7 has some of the worst commercial breaks. They are annoying, too long, and too often.
If the actual content was better, I wouldn’t mind as much.

some comments of Jorge Arangure Jr about Orioles' international effort are out of base
but also some Orioles’ fans don’t understand yet. The problem of Orioles scouting department is not that they don’t identify the top prospects, but ‘AFTER IDENTIFYING ’ those top prospects, the Orioles organisation don’t want to pay the signing bonus to get these top prospects.
It’s about ’Money Priority" ! Example; the Orioles front office gives priority in signing an old player for one million and not signing two top prospects with that money. For example; Red Sox number one prospect, Xander Bogaerts signing bonus only 450K.
The Orioles don’t give priority in signing top prospects. Hopefully with the new Orioles management, things are gonna change. But they must now resolve another the problem; Last year, I heard an Orioles scout saying to some prospects; You guys have a lot of talent, but the Orioles has decided not to sign a lot of prospects this year, because of the Bluefiled Affiliation problem. The Orioles are not going to sign you! They are not going to sign the prospects because there is no place for them.
He said;
Jorge Arangure Jr: It’s rare when I make a trip to Latin America and don’t see a Rangers scout at a workout. It’s rare when I’m in Latin America and I don’t see one of their top execs there. They spend the money, but they do so after having done the work.
Of course, you don’t see them, becuase in these days every decent baseball fan or amateur scout know where the top prospects are. Example; Jorge Soler and others played 2010 IBAF AAA World Championship in Edmonton Canada. Little league teams of around the world play at Williamsport, every year. The IBAF also has organized a littleleague World Championship. A decent organisation has a book with all those names; from the kids, Jose Matos(Cuba), Anthonia(Netherlands), Isaac Paredes(Mexico) till Jorge Soler.
B.T.W; The Texas Rangers has never signed a prospect from Curacao, before Jurickson Profar. On the other hand, the Orioles are signing players from Curacao since 1982! That’s 30 years relationship! And the Rangers, you don’t see them, only at the signings!
Why would Bluefield be an issue? No foreign player would go there upon signing.
I forget…it may be the number of teams you have affects the number of MiL players under contract.

You seem to be saying contradictory things
In the first paragraph you say that the O’s don’t have a problem identifying the top prospects, but rather signing them. Then you quote whoever that dude is and seem to be implying that the O’s aren’t doing their homework and have no idea where the top prospects are. Seems like you haven’t really clarified your own thought process on this.
And then I’ll just throw it out there that I don’t believe for a second that you heard an O’s scout saying anything like that to prospects.
Everybody seems to know the scouts around here.

The Orioles don’t have a problem identifying the top prospects. Of course you are not going to sign a 12 year old kid.
Then I quote Arangure Jr. about Texas Rangers; and wrote; A decent organisation has a book with all those names; from the kids, Jose Matos(Cuba), Anthonia(Netherlands), Isaac Paredes(Mexico) till Jorge Soler. I mean for all MLB organisations!
About the Orioles scout; That’s true! It’s filmed!
Please post the video immediately.
And I am still having a very hard time following your point.
Are you saying the Orioles don’t have a book with all those names? And if so, how do you know that?
i don't know if the Orioles have or don't have a book with names of 12 year old kids!
I wrote: A decent organisation( or scouting)has a book with all those names; from the kids……..! I mean for all organisations or scouts!
About what i wrote; that’s thrue! You have to believe me. I cannot say the name or you are going to fire him. And he is not guilty! It’s painful for me too, that the Orioles are not putting priority in signings the top prospects. I hope with the new management things are gonna change for us, Orioles fans.
Thank you

I know from Andres Reiner that both he and other scouts in Venezuela would tell prospects to sign with other teams if the front office would not greenlight the money. This one time Reiner had a kid willing to take a third if what another organization was offering, but Houston wouldn’t bite. He told the kid to sign elsewhere.

Fun idea for CC
…based on reading the Eveland comments above.
Sometimes the FO makes moves that seem incredibly, obviously head-shaking to us, but somehow resonate with the local media and less-informed (yes, I said it) fans. Like, they’ll sign someone like Kevin Millwood, and Britt will say, “the Orioles filled their urgent need for an innings eater,” and guys on Schmuck’s blog are talking about his wins or something, and all of us (or at least many of us) are having our heads explode.
IN light of this, it would be interesting to CC crowdsource an official reaction to each of DD’s major moves this offseason. We would have a series called “CC reacts to…..” and then each move: “…the Guthrie trade”, “… the Eveland trade”, …. “the Betemit acquistion, etc.”
Each post would have someone write a “pro” position, and someone write a “con” position. And then there would be a poll. Do you support this trade/acquistion? There would also be, say, two days of commenting in case people had questions or wanted to argue other points—but comments would then be closed so ridiculous bickering doesn’t go on forever.
At the end of the season, we publish a summary post that looks back at all of the moves/trades and at how they actually panned out, plus our predictions for them, and we grade CC’s collective wisdom.
I guess this is a little similar to doing projections, but cleaner. Each acquisition/trade just gets an up-or-down vote. And if we wind up getting a B+ or A- (as I suspect we might), then DD can float his future ideas past our hive mind. It would also be interesting to see which moves had nearly 50-50 votes (maybe the Guthrie trade?) vs. one-sided votes (maybe the Eveland trade?).
I don’t have time to organize it, but it shouldn’t take that much for someone other mod to post the list of trades/acquisitions and tap people to write the pro/con statements. We’d do two a day until they’re done so that we finish before pitchers and catchers—just to be sure ST performance doesn’t skew anything. And obviously, we’d all have to be honor bound to vote only once on each trade so that the polls are truly representational.
Thoughts?

Thorne/Palmer
There was a lot of awesome in that broadcast booth in that last series against Boston. Mostly Gary getting so excited and screaming as loud as he could, sometimes incorrect information, and then Jim Palmer calmly clarifying what happened on the last play.
If you can, go back and listen to Gary’s calls on
1. Andino’s inside the parker (gm 160)
2. Jones to Hardy to Wieters relay to nail Scutaro
3. Reimold’s game-tying double
4. Andino’s game winner
Maybe people that like the Thorne-Palmer thing are in the minority among O’s fans, but I for one, love it.
And Joe Angel.
Is it a minority?
Most people here seem to like them. But then, the fans here are basically the only other Orioles fans I interact with in any way.
Good to see Mr. Angel getting some love
I’ll second that listening to him call a game is pretty great, and if you watch with MLB.tv and use the option to overlay the radio broadcast with the MASN broadcast.. excellent.
Cheap tickets, and not in the sarcastic “because we’re terrible, you see!” way – I wouldn’t want to spend the kind of money it’d take to follow the Ravens in person, but you can see tons of games down at Camden without “ticket prices” becoming a significant part of your budget.

I think that about sums it up!
Gary was acting like the O's won the WS on Andino's hit. It was awesome.

on the iOS version of the At Bat app, you can watch every game if you have an MLB.tv subscription; on other versions of At Bat you cannot. That may change this season, though.

I hear you
I don’t have an android phone anymore either, and the “speed” of the OS was a major deciding factor.
yeah, you really need to jailbreak an android for speed.
If you do that, Android phones really fly. Although I have the Google Nexus which is also really fast but I think that phone is the exception to the rule.

I will also amend saying this is while watching on my laptop
its possible that the rules are different for the mobile app.
its a pretty cool deal.

Kinda a geeky thing, but...
I like that all the affiliates are close – you can drive 4 hours from Baltimore and be able to see every minor league team from Low-A on up, and all but Norfolk are less than 2.5 hours. I haven’t done it yet, but I want to hit a game of every affiliate (except GCL and DSL) this summer.

10 things
1) Brooks Robinosn – especially in the ‘70 World Series
2) Cal Ripken – he’s ours, all ours, and you can’t have him!
3) Earl Weaver – one of the best, ever.
4) Four 20-game winners in ‘71
5) Oriole Park at Camden Yards – still a great stadium
6) The cartoon bird is back!
7) Wild Bill Hagy!
8) Boog’s Barbeque
9) The uniforms
10) Camden Chat – seriously, this is a great place for an Orioles fan to be!

Cal. Say what you want about the current shitty state of affairs. You can’t take Cal away from us. Or Brooks, Frank, or Earl. Maybe these could all be referenced under a single item labeled “History”.
Boog's BBQ is a great addition
I think a lot of these could be grouped together under one “great history” bulletpoint. Listing them all individually just makes us look that much worse.

Maryland is the land of summer
I think because of the bay and ocean maryland really is the best place to be in the summer. It is as close to paradise as I have ever experienced. Sailing, crabs, bbq, and baseball. The orioles represent that perfectly content feeling for me. They are the idyllic youth that washes clean the grimy city of reality. The fans are unlike all others. loyal to a fault, with the best sense of humor, their fans are the only ones that are respected by both ny and boston fans alike. And finally hope. Deep down, in places maybe some of us don’t like to admit, we are never without hope.

France is the only one I have been to.
We were staying with some friends of my parents and I can agree that I can’t afford to go to france on my own. But once you get there it is nice!
no question
of course, all the menus are in french.
I’m guessing no one here is really a fan of the National Lampoon radio hour though…
I did ok with my 2.5 years of highschool french class.
I was able to muddle my way through. Getting used to the euros in terms of dollars was horrible though. You get home and realize that 60 euro meal cost over 90 dollars.

It’s a line from “The Immigrants” sketch that NLRH did about 36 years ago. I think it was Guilda Radner…

yes
but Minnesota is awesome in the winter. They embrace it. that’s what is important.
They turn the metrodome into a roller-rink / jogging track in the winter

I actually think you specifically shouldn’t mention Game 162 last year. This might not be a popular opinion here, but I think taking too much delight in what happened speaks to a pettiness and a sort of pathetic desperation that doesn’t reflect well on us as fans. It was Tampa who stuck it to the Red Sox, anyway. All we did was lose ninety plus games—again—and look pretty brutal doing it.

I would have liked to know how the island got the way it was. Instead of revealing the secrets of the island, they spent half the last season with an alternate timeline that (in my opinion) ended up being complete throwaway along the lines of it “it was all a dream…” (They were already dead and that timeline was the gateway to their afterlife.)
Well, it kinda did reveal how the Island works
Its got some big electromagnetic freaky properties inside it.
I think that’s enough of an explanation. Any way to explain just why it does everything it does would be a disappointment. Magic doesn’t need to be explained. That’s what ruins a lot of fantasy these days; the idea that magic needs to follow these set rules that must be laid down. Explaining how the Island worked would have ended up like the explanation of how the Force worked.
They quite answered why walt was kidnapped.
Yes, they couldn’t have children on the island, but they thought Walt was special. Why did they think he was special?
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
Yes, but they just let him go without explaining. The show implied he had powers, but they never explained anything about Walt and his relationship with the Others. We just know that they really wanted him and they let him go because he was too much handle.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
Well...
That’s kinda because the kid had a growth spurt and didn’t look 10 any more so the writers wrote him out of the show.
CGI his ass!
And I imagine this is under the non-important category, but how the hell did he communicate with his dad in the hatch via the computer? Did he magically type the message on the computer for his dad to see.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
I guess
The only weird shit that Walt did was killing random animals through his mind power. If his powers extend to typing on computers, more power to him.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
And what the hell was the "box"?
I don’t mind chalking up certain things to magic. For example, the island healing John Locke is magic. I’m fine with that and I don’t need further explanation. But certain shit just don’t make sense like the box.

Then what advantage did it serve to Ben to tell him that there was such a box?
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
It was a metaphor that’s why I put the box in quotes. Lindleoff and Cuse confirmed it was a metaphor in their podcast. They said the box was a metaphor that Ben used because it would understandable to Locke (since he worked at a box company). But Ben was referring to some device that did cool shit. That “device” wasn’t explained.

yeah, I was going to say...
generally the better degree is in english with a minor or two in Film and creative writing. Film school for the most part doesn’t teach you much, but you might make some good contacts at USC, and you would have to be in the film program there to make those contacts. It’s all about who you know anyway.
Isn't UCLA the one Spielberg is somewhat active with?

Hadn’t thought of that, thank you. Money is obviously the number one constraint and for a non-resident UCLA isn’t much different from USC, I’m hoping upcoming election season paves the way for some sort of paying job.

It's something I thought of. I want to do another year of school though.
I thought of getting a job with a studio for a year, picking up CA residency while also being involved in film and then going to UCLA at resident tuition. That is an option I am definitely keeping open. The one thing I am trying to avoid is spending to much time at a state (Oregon) school and getting stuck in something I don’t want to do.

get the cheapest English degree you can
and get good at writing in the process. That way you have plenty you can do while getting into film. That would be my advice.
not at all, that's why I said to do both
the degree is just useful for the paper chase.
it also won't guarantee you a job
I know a bunch of film students who had no problem landing editing jobs right out of college
yeah, but he writes and he wants to direct

This isn’t a punitive situation is it? This is more like an anti-trust violation – either you do it and then pay a retroactive fine or the government prevents you from doing it, but you don’t get fined and prevented from doing it.

At this point I just feel bad for the kid
From the O’s screwing up, the KBO throwing a hissy fit and going a far as banning the kid from playing baseball in his own country, and now MLB for making this even more of a PR nightmare – the second this kid as much as walks a batter, he is screwed and out come the pitch forks. There is going to be so much unneeded pressure on him for playing a game that he loves because a bunch of adults are having a pissing contest. Welcome to adulthood kid. So sad.

Interesting (old) article from Verducci:

So maybe Tommy Hunter is more promising than we thought? I don’t know.
he's got some good company by showing up on those lists
but then again, Henderickson and Matusz also show up. I’ll take it as a sliver of promise as the only pitcher to be on both.
Unrelated, but while searching for more info on that, I came across this site:
Looks to have a bunch of in depth articles that might be appealing to some of the more science types.
Huh, neat.
If you’re interested in that kind of thing, I would suggest that you check out The Physics of Baseball by Robert Adair. It’s kind of a slow read, but he covers a lot of fundamental baseball things like the time a batter has to react to a pitch and the effect of wind of the flight of a home run.
