Watched Moneyball finally

My favorite scene is when Billy is talking to his ex and her husband about baseball. That is exactly what it is like to talk to people about baseball who don’t know a thing about it.

Good point

I am writing a paper on using different perspectives when managing an organization and I am going to pick different scenes in moneyball to talk about. That is a good one to use.

haha, it's funny you say that

my brother and sister are both in their last year of law school, and any time i mention my MBA program they both just scoff at how much of a joke an MBA is compared to a law degree.

i would agree with your statement but since my job pays for mine, i don’t even know if writing the check is difficult.

how nice of you to say, haha.

I find it challenging mainly because most of teachers really push to do work beyond just BS’ing. I am 1/2 way through and there was only 1 or 2 classes that I didn’t get much benefit from.

by IggesRule13 on Feb 2, 2012 9:46 AM EST up reply actions

I'm sure it varies program to program

and I am planning on getting an MBA eventually, so i’m not just hating on the degree

by kba26 on Feb 2, 2012 9:49 AM EST up reply actions

I think the course material is great (most classes anyway)

but I hate writing papers, which is 90% of the graded materials.

I definitely don’t think it is a joke. Is yours online? Mine is actually in a classroom.

by IggesRule13 on Feb 2, 2012 9:44 AM EST up reply actions

mine is in class too

i guess the program you’re in is just much more challenging than mine is. maybe one or two of the 12 classes i’ve taken so far were more difficult/demanding than any class i took in undergrad. for example, for one of my classes last semester our only grades for the class were a group presentation, and then two exams that were both open book/open note, and he graded on a curve. i didn’t even get to do that in undergrad.

clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose...

by Gamecock24 on Feb 2, 2012 9:48 AM EST up reply actions

I guess it depends how you look at it.

I have heard a lot of the teachers say that they were prefer not to have tests and stuff because they know everyone is smart enough to study for a test and do well enough to get a 3.0+.

My personal view is that if you go to class, really try to learn by studying/being an active participate in the class tests and grades are useless. If I spend 20 hours a week reading and in the classroom while working full time why should they make really hard tests?

From a business prospective, if everyone hears how hard the program is then they will take their money somewhere else. I’m doing my MBA for free as well and if my college started going bananas giving hard tests and really long papers that eliminated my ability to enjoy my life then I wouldn’t do that program.

Good, I hoped so

From what I gather, teachers hate teaching for tests as well. I can see why it makes sense in high school and even college these days. But grad school students have shown they are smart and I would imagine they wouldn’t show up to class and pay the money if they were not interesting in putting effort into learning.

Schooling would be so much more enjoyable if we could take classes to learn new ideas and topics instead of focusing on just getting a grade.

Did I mention I write writing papers? haha.

Bale is very good, and "The Fighter" is an awesome movie.

My wife and I recently saw “The Machinist”, with Bale as the lead. He supposedly lost 63 pounds to play that role on a diet of a can of tuna and an apple each day. That’s one dedicated actor.

Don't forget that his next film after The Fighter was Batman Begins

so he was at normal weight, dropped 63 pounds for The Machinist, then bulked back to well above where he was at the beginning to play Batman, all in less than a couple years

People give actors shit for being well paid,

which is fair in some circumstances (I’m gonna go with Gerard Butler on this one), but when you think about how many people someone like Bale has entertained with their work, you see why what they do is so important.

Yeah, I don't mind actors getting paid much

because it is the directors who decide to pay them. They could get phenomenal actors for very cheap but they decide to go with the name. So I more blame the directors and producers and moviegoers who only show up to a movie to see the actor rather than the movie.

Craig was great, I really respect him as an actor.

I thought skarsgaard was better than the original Martin, slightly more sinister from the beginning, but still understated. I thought how Fincher didn’t bust out flashbacks all the time was interesting, since the original did that a lot. He relied on quick flashbacks and the editing was great. There was an article in the New York Times magazine about the editing of one of the sequences a while back.

I actually am somewhat hopeful for Davis

At age 25 Reimold was still in AA and Davis darn near outproduced him
I looked at them in comparison for each year they were in the same level of ball and Davis’s career for his age compared to Reimold has been much more spectacular. That said, Reimold has done better than davis in the majors as he has two positive WAR seasons but his first didn’t come until 2009 when he was 26. Lets see how Davis does in his age 26 season. The biggest difference I have seen between the two are:

Reimold – Much more consistency with walks and strike outs
Davis – Depending on the year davis has had a better SLG% / WOBA

I have been pretty down on Adam Jones but looking at Reimold and Dave and thier age progression seasons and seeing that Jones himself is only 26 I have more respect for what he has done. I keep forgetting that he is that young.

Interesting

3B is shallow league-wide right now, and I doubt any of our prospects will be ready to play the position full time in the Show by next year. Is $11M too much for another year of Reynolds as a stop gap even if his defense was good? Let’s say he really is in the best shape of his life and he turns in a respectable defensive effort at the position this season while hitting 40 bombs with a decent OBP, would he be worth the money then?

...While you're waiting for moments that never come.

by Astronaut Mike Dexter on Feb 2, 2012 9:31 AM EST up reply actions

I'm really really excited for Reynolds next year

he improved in almost every offensive stat that matters (not BB%) while switching leagues. I still don’t know why Arizona gave up on him. He had a monster season, and then a down one. And he STILL had a BABIP much lower than the rest of his career last year. I think if he can come anything close to only being a bad fielder and not a terrible one, he’s going to be a fantastic, fantastic player for the Os.

Can't be worse than paying $10M to Roberts to do nothing.

On the other hand, the Reynolds expenditure is optional, so whatever.

The list of potential FA 3B for 2013 isn’t pretty.

if Reynolds is going to be worth his $11MM

I would think it would have to be at 1B. I just don’t see any way that he doesn’t continue to be awful defensively at third, essentially giving back on defense what he gives you at the plate.

On the other hand, if he works at it, I could envision Reynolds as an above-average defensive 1B and a quality OBP-and-power bat if he returns to near-2009 levels; sort of like Carlos Pena with more singles and fewer walks. That’s worth $11MM.

by AndrewTorrez on Feb 2, 2012 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

I just don’t see any way that he doesn’t continue to be awful defensively at third

Well, he’s still under 30, and he’s going to have a lot more reps than he’s ever had. And by all accounts, he has trimmed up quite a bit.

He may never be a defensive stalwart over there, but there’s not reason to think he won’t improve somewhat.

Plus, he had such a bad year with the glove, I can't see him repeating it.

Even if he goes from minus 25 or so runs defensively (almost fictionally bad) to more like minus 10 runs (closer to his career norms), that’s a gain of about 1.5 wins – just based on regression to career norms, not actual improvement of his talent.

he says unless there’s an upset, three rotation spots are taken by Tommy Hunter, Wei-Ying Chen, and Jeremy Guthrie. Okay, so I understand the last two, but Tommy Hunter? In case you haven't seen it...Can the O's go Worse to First in 2012?

All signs point to no.

Orioles
If they were to do it — if the Orioles could overcome the Rays, Red Sox, and Yankees (not to mention a Blue Jays team that has more than a little talent), it would be one of the best baseball stories of the decade. Aces would emerge. Hitting stars would be born. Rock operas would be written. Constellations would be renamed.

But they haven’t developed a processor that can calculate the exact number of things that would need to go right. There’s too much to overcome in a perilously strong division. I could see them having an interesting year with a few breaks — think the 2009 Reds, who took a big step forward just by not being bad. But 2012 AL East Champions, these Orioles are not.

by IggesRule13 on Feb 2, 2012 10:37 AM EST reply actions

Also,
The odds are pretty outstanding that none of these last-place teams will win their division, just like it was pretty unlikely for the Diamondbacks to jump ahead of the Giants. But it happened. And it could again with different teams. Even the Orioles.

Also, if the Orioles win the AL East, I will write The Wire: The Musical with a closing number titled “Just Say No … No … Nobody’s Gonna Stop Us Now!” that’s both uplifting and spectacular. So there’s plenty to root for.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Feb 2, 2012 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree

They got a lot going on with Marshall and Lilly. Robin’s character is becoming to evolve pretty rapidly as well.

by IggesRule13 on Feb 2, 2012 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

Lately you're right.

There has been more plots surrounding the domesticity of M and L. And they’re letting Robin grow more. I dig it. I hope they keep this up and wrap up the whole, “how mr. douche met his mother,” plot.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Feb 2, 2012 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

I think the show gave up on Ted a long time ago

He’s developed the least of any of the characters on the show.

by kba26 on Feb 2, 2012 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't mind friends

but I hate when people rave about how it was soooo great. It was alright, calm down. No game changer.
But then, the same thing goes for HIYM. Both entertaining, and pretty funny. But nothing revolutionary.

@sibsinExile

by SibiGnana on Feb 2, 2012 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

I certainly don't think it was groundbreaking

but I can watch the reruns now and still laugh, so what more do you need in a sitcom?

by Stacey on Feb 2, 2012 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

No nothing more

I agree with you. I just hate it when people say it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread (and a lot of people do this).

@sibsinExile

by SibiGnana on Feb 2, 2012 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

From a tv geek perspective

HIMYM does so much more with the structure of the show than Friends ever did. Friends was a great, basic sitcom but never really tried anything more.

by kba26 on Feb 2, 2012 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

but but but

Ross almost drank a jar of bacon fat… in episode that was suppose to unfold in real time. You don’t think that’s groundbreaking?!

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Feb 2, 2012 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

Yea personally I like HIMYM better

I think it’s a bit more creative. I think.
Also, I think guys tend to like HIMYM more than women do and vice versa for Friends, atleast in my experience.

@sibsinExile

by SibiGnana on Feb 2, 2012 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not saying I disagree

but how is HIMYM more creative. Seems like like a cookie cutter sitcom to me.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Feb 2, 2012 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

For starters,

the storytelling is pretty frequently a lot less linear than you find in typical sitcoms.

by kba26 on Feb 2, 2012 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

the flashback feature

is a gimmick. we’re not talking about taratino usage.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Feb 2, 2012 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

Of course its not at the level

but we aren’t comparing it to Tarantino here, we’re comparing it to Friends. Its far more creative than you’re typical network sitcom.

by kba26 on Feb 2, 2012 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know about that

It’s far more creative than Friends. But shows like Community and 30 rock are on another level for creativity and “smart” comedies. But then again, I guess that’s not a “typical” network sitcom. (Two quotes in one post…)

@sibsinExile

by SibiGnana on Feb 2, 2012 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Community is a good example

Any sitcom that uses a documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now as a blueprint for an episode is taking risks. That’s innovative, not using Bob Saget to do voice overs.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Feb 2, 2012 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

I'm just saying I wouldn't pull the flashback feature

as evidence of its creative storytelling. Having his two kids sit on the couch while Bob Saget says, “Now kids blah blah,” as innovative structure.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Feb 2, 2012 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

I think thats understating how they use it

Many of the individual episodes are non-linear by themselves, and the flashback structure is often used to tell the story out of order so that you have much more information about how the story progresses than the characters do. That’s a lot more than most network shows attempt.

by kba26 on Feb 2, 2012 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

I can get on board on that explanation.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Feb 2, 2012 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

Of course...

One can probably argue that the basic nature of Friends is what’s let it be such a cultural common reference point.

I’m not sure how often I’ll be referring to HIMYM jokes a decade hence. But I’ll probably still be referencing Friends, “They know” … “But now we know they know!”

Nahh there are a ton of comedies that were more than decent after Seinfeld

I have never heard of anyone with their computer “slowing down” unless they were using programs that required more power/speed.

i did something unusual this time. instead of porting files over from the old one, i reformatted the hard drive into partitions. I have all my apps on a Boot drive, and all my projects and folders on a Projects drive. I also recently moved my iTunes library to Projects, and am going to do same with my iPhoto Library, because both of those are enormous.

I’ve already seen noticiably improvements just with th iTunes move.

If you want to try something like this, here’s some info. But I don’t think you can safely create partitions on an existing drive with data on it—only on a new one. Something to think about for your next model maybe.

Honorable Mention

Nick Markakis, Orioles: There’s a reason you only hear about other teams asking for Adam Jones in a trade and not Markakis. The latter is due $43.05 million over the next three seasons while he hit .284 with 15 homers and 73 RBI last season. You need more offense than that from a corner outfielder in order to pay him almost $15 million a year.

Then go to either USC or UCLA for my last 2 years. So yeah, basically I need money, but I also need to avoid getting stuck in a dead end major. stats that matter?

I was curious as to what stats people think more often than not predict future performance.

by dan o'hare on Feb 2, 2012 1:56 PM EST reply actions

For pitchers...

I find these insightful :
WHIP, Ground ball %, Homers/9, K’s/9. To that extent FIP.

I haven’t gotten a good feel for the meaning behind the really advanced stats yet. Like what number is “good” and which is “bad”. Someone should do a fanpost on establishing those.

For example ERA, I know <=3.00 is good and >=4.5 is bad.

by IggesRule13 on Feb 2, 2012 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

For FIP and xFIP

It’s on the same scale as ERA.

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

BABIP is only good as a sort of anti-predictor

BABIP fluctuates wildly. For pitchers, they’ll almost always regress to around .300 BABIP (unless they’re knuckleballers), so you can use BABIP to say “This guy got lucky” or “This guy was unlucky” and predict that he’ll be better or worse based on that.

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Not really

Hitters have more control over their BABIP. Guys who hit more line drives have better BABIPs than guys who hit lots of ground balls, who have better BABIPs than guys who hit tons of fly balls (generally).

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

That said

A guy with an unusually high BABIP is likely to regress. Same for a guy with unusually low BABIP (unless he just sucks).

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I'm sure they do

Fenway probably affects it, since there are more balls turned into hits thanks to the Monster. I don’t know of any studies done on it, but I’m sure there have been some.

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

And for hitters,

you should look at their career BABIP, and compare that to the BABIP in the year you’re looking at. So someone who had a bad year, but a BABIP well under (say, 0.050 or more) his career average, is likely to bounce back.

"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver

by Vuff on Feb 2, 2012 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

I thought it was the other way around?

where pitchers have more control over their BABIP than hitters

by kba26 on Feb 2, 2012 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

No

Pitchers have virtually no control over their BABIP. Hitters have a lot of control over it.

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, ichrio and jeter are two guys that every year have a high BABIP

from watching them play, it seems apparent that they have a skill set that allows that. With pitchers, it seems less likely, but jeremey guthrie seems to always have a lowish babip, so maybe pitchers have some control over it

by brek on Feb 2, 2012 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

yuck

derek jeter and ichiro in same sentence…

by IggesRule13 on Feb 2, 2012 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

Well... Guthrie and Matt Cain tend to outperform their BABIP

The explanation is generally “shit happens”.

Ichiro’s skillset is obvious; he’s fast and can run out balls that normally get turned into easy outs and make them base hits. Jeter is somewhat the same, but he also (used to) hit a lot of line drives and grounders, which turn into hits more often than fly balls (which usually get caught by outfielders).

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

This doesn't make any sense to me

I would expect pitching style to impact BABIP

by kba26 on Feb 2, 2012 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

It does to an extent

A fly ball pitcher will have a slightly lower BABIP than a ground ball pitcher because fly balls turn into outs more often. Of course, fly balls also turn into home runs and other extra base hits, which is why being a ground ball pitcher is preferable.

But in general, once the ball hits the bat, pitchers have little control over if it falls in for a hit or not. The defense is the primary ones who determine if it does.

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

I think I remember reading

that better pitchers do tend to have slightly lower BABIPs – which makes some sense, because better stuff is harder to hit for line drives.

But I think it makes sense that hitters have more control. If nothing else, while a pitcher can only try to select and locate a pitch, a batter gets to react to those things and decide whether and how to swing at the ball.

"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver

by Vuff on Feb 2, 2012 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

It's still being studied

The best studies I’ve seen say pitchers do have some impact, but not nearly as much as is assumed. Like a guy might have a few points of control, but not huge swings.

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

Also good.

Still trying to learn what the “deeper meaning of this is.” I like WHIP more because I have a greater feel for its value.

I also think BABIP has too many variables, (defensive prowess, stadium, opponents, what kind of hits they were).

by IggesRule13 on Feb 2, 2012 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

For pitchers

Walks, strike outs, K/BB, Line drive, fly ball, and ground ball %, and home run rate.

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

For hitters

Pretty much the same thing, except without the strike outs.

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

That's a bit outside of my league

You generally want to look at the same stats, but there’s a lot more projecting going on. You have to compare the guy’s age to the age of his competition, know how the league plays (the PCL inflates offensive statistics because of a lot of small parks in dry air), and the like.

Also when looking at those salaries

think about them every time you see teachers unions begin a work to hours movement. Many of the teachers are working long before and long after the school work day ends. So that 42K is not for an average 40 hour work week.

My mom was one.

Let’s be honest, here: unless a teacher is getting bounced around constantly between subjects – and yes, that sometimes happens, but the majority don’t – there’s only so much planning to do year-to-year. It’s not like cirricula change much over the average summer.

I would not minimize the amount of work a good teacher has to do. But complaints about being underpaid when you typically start at $40k+ annually straight out of college with a Bachelor’s ($43k in Baltimore County according to a recent Sun article), and have guaranteed raises based on experience and additional classes/training – not performance or difficulty of subject matter taught – fall rather flat, in my opinion.

And, duck, none of this is to minimize what you go through; it’s the teachers in rich areas that I’m inclined to consider a bit whiny.

One caveat:

Things may well have changed significantly in the last ten years or so since my mom was teaching regularly, with some of the new federal education mandates and such, and the general trend towards excessive credentialism. But even when my mom was a resource teacher / department head, she’d get a decent amount of time off – probably closer to one month in the summer, but those breaks and extra random days during the year count, too.

My pay’s been frozen for 3 years, and will be for the next 3, and that’s if I’m lucky and it doesn’t get cut. Frozen, as in not $1 more than I made 3 years ago.

Sure, we start higher than most 20-somethings, but a graduate degree’s mandatory, as is continuing ed classes. After 18 years and a Master’s, I’m fairly confident I’d be earning at least 20% more in private industry than I am as a teacher.

My wife had a convo with a vacuum guy at this store here in Leesburg. He’s persuaded her Dyson’s are junk because they are pricey to fix, and the filters need to be replaced frequently, and after 2-3 years the suction always goes bad.

He tells her to get one with a bag because bagless puts particles back into the air because they don’t seal completely. He says he’ll give us $100 off if we give him our old Dyson. I don’t know shit about it but she is sold on everything he says. Ughhhh…. I hate making decisions.

Also, there are side rankings for various topics. dyson ranked #1 in terms of reliability. plus, if i remember correctly, there are various categories of vacuums like cannister bagless, cannister bagged, upright bagged, and upright bagless, I’m not saying dyson was ranked 1 or 2 but they usually did well.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Feb 2, 2012 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

Dyson

bagless canister: two models, ranked 8 and 10 of 10 tested.
bagless uptight: three models, ranked 4, 35, and 47 of 49 tested.

by PhilR8 on Feb 2, 2012 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

there are only two categories.

like i said 4th seems pretty good to me especially out of 47 models. i do remember that there weren’t many cannister models ranked for whatever reason.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Feb 2, 2012 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

there's a handvac category too

Dyson was like 5 of 9. Also some bagged categories that didn’t test Dysons, which I assume is because Dyson doesn’t make bagged models.

by PhilR8 on Feb 2, 2012 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

gotcha

so three categories, dyson did well in one category, poorly in cannister, 5 out of 9th in the handvac category. and there they were number 1 in reliability as you confirmed earlier.

PC users

help a Mac brutha who does not understand your world.

My wife uses a Dell Latitude E4300 laptop for work. At her desk, there’s a docking station and extended keyboard. But when she brings work home, which happens mroe and more often these days, the compressed laptop keyboard gives her carpal tunnel/repetitive stress issues.

I want to get her a bluetooth extended (or at least normal, not compressed) keyboard and mouse to use at home. I thought of getting the Apple ones because they are compatible with most PCs, but it turns out they are also compressed, which seems hella stupid to me.

Any recommendations for what I should get? Are there any parameters I have to worry about, like getting a specific driver or somesuch? And as a bonus question, I would like it to work with my Mac as well, so any knowledge in that area is appreciated.

In terms of specific model, you basically just have to look for the one with the features you want. because we move our laptops around a lot

and having the USB cord for the mouse and keyborad is not ideal.

we could go that way if we had no, but I’d rather not. Especially since my wife is likely to place her monitor on a table in front of her and sit with the keyboard on the couch.

Plus eventually, I will probably get a corded monitor so it can be even further farther away

My company will do that for people if they work from home over a certain percentage of time.

You might also be able to talk to the Safety Department to build your case, as there might be an ‘ergonomic’ issue.

i don’t know how much you can ask a company to ensure the ergonomics of you working at home. it might be something we could do, but i’d rather fight other battles with them. paying for a keyboard isn’t a huge concern.

I went to Jiffy Lube yesterday, and paid way too much for an oil change.

I tried to use my windshield wiper fluid this morning, and they totally didn’t fill it up! What’s my best course of action? Do I just buy some for a dollar, or do I indignantly go back and demand satisfaction?

I don't think

it’s ever a good thing when you’re sitting in your house and you hear the neighbors carry on a conversation about how they wish you move in front of your house.

by Michael18 on Feb 2, 2012 2:51 PM EST reply actions

we yell at their

kids all the time for playing ball and hitting our house. So the adults don’t like us because we actually force them to watch the kids some. They went on for like 20 minutes discussing why they don’t like us. Because it’s a townhome community doesn’t give your kid the right to run across our lawn and hit our house and cars with footballs.

by Michael18 on Feb 2, 2012 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

ah yeah sounds like they are at fault

I understand kids need a place to play but if you are going to live in a townhome and adults mention they dont want kids hitting their house or cars, just tell your kids to stay away from that house.

And they throw chocolate at your dogs.

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

I live in a townhome as well

I watched my neighbors 5 year old ride his tricycle into the bumper of a car in someones driveway at full speed.

My car had a big scratch about that high and I couldn’t figure out where it came from and I think he did the same to my car but I had no proof.

Damn kids.

by IggesRule13 on Feb 2, 2012 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

I think I used to be one of those kids.

When I was in the “play outside every day” age range, the game of choice tended to be wiffle ball, and man, we ended up hitting that ball into the window of the lady next door without even trying like every day. She worked nights and she’d always yell at us and we’d run away for a while and then come back the next day.

That was the limit of our reign of terror, however. Loud and obnoxious, yes, vandalists, no.

Random Mark Reynolds Comment

About the “There is nothing Mark Reynolds can do…” comment.

I disagree. If Mark hits 40+ homers with 100+ RBIs, shows significant (and i mean SIGNIFICANT) improvement at third, with under 195 Ks, wouldn’t it be foolish to not pick up his option?

Not picking him up, you throw away that production and add another hole to be filled on a team that has little depth at 3B. Unless they think they can retain him for less money, its not like they need that money to pay someone else.

by Jokes & Burns on Feb 2, 2012 4:16 PM EST reply actions

If he did that I'd sign him to an extension!

I think he’ll be good to have around until he blocks someone in the minors from playing.

by IggesRule13 on Feb 2, 2012 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

Thats my main point.

Who else would they stick at third? Outside the long shot of Machado being MLB ready by 2013 and moving Hardy to 3rd and spending that money on other holes to get added offensive production.

by Jokes & Burns on Feb 2, 2012 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Personally I'd like to see Hardy groomed to play 3rd.

but a guy like Johnathan Schoop could potentially play 3B. but I doubt that would be before the 2014 season.

I am a Reynolds fan and pray that he becomes serviceable for the O’s. But I have a pitcher’s mind and you CANNOT expect to win with that defense at the hot corner. Even if that means losing production on offense.

by IggesRule13 on Feb 2, 2012 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

Someone has to play 3rd base, and if that someone get’s you 40+ home runs, that has to be a positive. Also (since I was just looking it up) his BAbip was .266. also, his feilding percentage was as bad as it’s ever been last year (by 40 pts).

by dan o'hare on Feb 2, 2012 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

Fielding percentage

That is one of those stats that isn’t that good. There aren’t really any perfect defensive stats, but fielding percentage is the worst by far.

Even so, your point remains correct. Last year was a historically bad defensive year and there’s no reason to believe he’ll be that bad again.

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

ah...

I never asked about defense, did i? :)

by dan o'hare on Feb 2, 2012 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

With his weight loss

And prior per season improvements before last year, you have to image him going from historically dreadful back to slightly below average, which is justifiable given his offensive production.

by Jokes & Burns on Feb 2, 2012 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

*which would be justifiable

by Jokes & Burns on Feb 2, 2012 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure he's ever been as good as slightly below average

His defense has always rated somewhere between bad and very bad.

by Holymittens on Feb 2, 2012 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

well...

in 2010 he had a -8 rtot/yr. so he was just 8 runs below the MLB average for third basemen.

compared to the -23 he put up last year.

by Jokes & Burns on Feb 2, 2012 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

he is 28 years old, right in the middle of the “prime years” for MLB starters.

You forget he plays for the Orioles

when has anyone ever said “Once (insert FA signing) became an Oriole he really turned it on.”

JJ Hardy is my favorite Oriole.

O God

Insert “best shape of his life” comment.

MR would have to improve leaps and bounds to be an average 3B. I think he had one of the 5 worse years of all time last year.

but his soul killing strikeouts and his ability to hit fastballs down the middle need to improve as well.

Well

Share price + outstanding shares = market cap.

Look at AT&T, you can get their shares for less than $30 each, but their company is even worth more than Google because they have 6 billion shares out there whereas Google sells for $585 but only has 325 million shares outstanding.

speaking of

this funny little stock that I occasionally buy spiked 30% yesterday. Check out the price history for VRS – it’s behavior makes zero sense. Mostly drops a little bit each day or treads water and then once every month or two it’ll just have a massive one day gain.

Yeah

and most of the news about them has been good over the past 3-4 months. They laid off a bunch of people but it was planned due to finally upgrading some ancient equipment.

The random spikes in the price don’t seem to correspond to any news though. I’m almost wondering if it’s a popular pump and dump target or something. I don’t get it, but I’ve been buying it when it gets low for the past 3-4 months and selling into a spike. Yesterday I wasn’t paying close enough attention and missed out on an additional 15% or so. Pissed me off.

But you know how everyone seems to have a carrer year, or breakout year at 28 years old? Take a look at the lineup:
Hardy – 29
Markakis – 28
Reynolds – 28
Andino – 28
Reimold – 28
Jones – 26
Wieters – 26
Davis – 26

Betemit is the old guy at 31…I’m just saying, everyone is going to have a monster year…

I doubt any of you red staters were watching the daily show just now

but they just had a brilliant segment on Florida’s mandatory drug testing for welfare recipients program. The funniest part was when Asif Mandvi asked the bill’s sponsor if he would take a drug test since he had stated that anybody receiving tax payer dollars should have to, but they also reported that the program had resulted in a net loss of $200,000 for FL tax payers even though the welfare recipients paid for any failed drugs tests and that only 2% of the welfare recipients failed the drug test.
