OT: A Day in Amsterdam - Suggestions please?
Hi everyone. As many of you know, I'm embarking on a trip to Israel starting March 5th. I'm flying alone for a number of reasons, but that's not very important. I have a 12-hour layover in Amsterdam, and as such I'm taking a tour of the city. Some of you mentioned that you've been to Amsterdam, and I'm trying to make a list of fun places to visit in one day. I hope this fanpost can keep your thoughts organized because a comment in Bird Droppings will inevitably get lost in the shuffle.
Thanks in advance for your help. I really appreciate it!

Well, I'm an art nerd (oh, who am I kidding, I'm an all-purpose nerd)
But if you have any interest in art at all, you can’t miss the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum is also fantastic. A lot of people like the Heineken brewery tour, but if you want to have a more unique alcohol related experience, the House of Bols is something I’d recommend – it is the oldest continuously operating corporation in the Netherlands, the nation’s oldest distillery, and one of the finest producers of gin in the world, as well as of the Dutch spirit genever. The Anne Frank house is actually quite fascinating and moving, and the tulip market is a remarkable sight to see.
But I’d add that you are going to one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Save a few hours just to walk around.

Great advice for a 17 year old!
What is the drinking age there?

I thought you were going to Hamsterdam at first.

I went about seven months ago....
the Torture museum is pretty cool. Vondell Park is a nice stroll, but my best suggestion would be to take a canal boat ride, then just walk around the city. The architecture of the buildings is nice enough, and there is so much to see around the canals that just walking is fun. Stop here and there to have a pint. The Heineken is really good over there because it’s fresh, but the Heineken brew tour is pretty cheesey. The Tulip market is nice too. Of course settle into a coffehouse if that’s your thing.
Given that you’ll have about 8 1/2- 9 hours to be in the ciy itself, you can see plenty. Just take the train to Central Station from the airport, and it drops you off in the touristy area near Dam Square, boat tours, shopping. Grab a map, and don’t feel like a dumb tourist by pulling it out and looking at it. I have never seen so many tourists in my life as I did in my week there.
Oh yeah……EAT SOME PANCKAES!!!

If you decide to visit a "coffeehouse"...
….aka, legally smoke some weed, beware that Amsterdam weed is much more potent than the stuff sold in the US.
Ask the person behind the counter for advice—it’s easy to be steered to something milder. If you don’t like to smoke, you can buy a brownie.

and having said that, just realized you said, "a day."
I wouldn’t do the weed thing. It’s more of a novelty, and with only one day in such an amazing town, you don’t want to spend it stoned.

Why not?
Seriously.

Amsterdam transfer tour!
Take the train from Schiphol airport to Amsterdam Central station.when y’r there, look for a canal boat tour ticket. It’s better for u, because u don’t have to walk the whole day. Then, u must look for an Amsterdam City tour by bus ticket(different options of tours) at the tourism office, i think it’s near the station. when u are ready, if u have enough time, u can walk around at some shops in city. u must be at the airport Schiphol, three hours before your trip to Israel. Success!
Döner kebab and turkish pizza deluxe!
If u need a supermarket, there is a fine super at the Schiphol Plaza named Food Village, it has all kinds of products like bread, food and drinks from Japan, Holland and other countries. Outside, near Amsterdam Central station u can get döner kebab, shoarma or turkish pizza deluxe at the Döner Company. It’s delicious and nutritive!
Take a canal tour of the city.
It’s what the city is known for… well that and the coffeeshops. But seriously it’s a great way to spend the day. I agree with gio2chat about the Döner kebab… delicious!
