The Nugget discarded: Josh Bell designated for assignment

Around this corner of the blogO'sphere, we'll always remember him for that one game where he came out of nowhere to hit two home runs against Cliff Lee. From this, Josh Bell was briefly given the nickname of "The Nugget", after a Buck Showalter quote where he said he was "looking for the nuggets and the pile-jumpers." Bell, acquired from the Dodgers for George Sherrill, never quite managed to put things all together at the major league level. At times he looked lost both at the plate and in the field, adding up to a .200/.221/.264 batting line in 79 games over the 2010 and 2011 seasons. In that time, he struck out in 34.5% of his plate appearances. That's more than both Mark Reynolds and Chris Davis in their careers.

That's not gonna cut the mustard for long, and it seems that time's up for the 25 year old Bell. Today, he was designated for assignment by the Orioles to make room for a player claimed off waivers from the Red Sox. That player is catcher Luis Exposito. What do the Orioles have to tell us about Exposito?

Exposito, 25, is a career .268/.324/.420 hitter in seven minor league seasons in Boston's farm system. He was the Red Sox 31st round selection in the 2005 First Year Player Draft.

And that's all that the Orioles have to tell us about Exposito. Perhaps there was a need for catching depth in Norfolk. Perhaps Dan Duquette is continuing to prune Andy MacPhail's guys whenever he gets the opportunity to do so. Probably it will never matter, because Bell was unlikely to ever appear in a non-September MLB game for the Orioles, and Exposito is equally unlikely to ever appear in a non-September MLB game for the Orioles.

I predict there will be significant confusion with Exposito entering a minor league system that already contains 2011 Orioles draft pick Jason Esposito. Or maybe there won't be any confusion at all because nobody will think much about Exposito. I don't know. But Dan Duquette thinks enough of him to acquire him and stick him on the 40-man roster. Of that much we can be certain.

Now let us take a brief moment to remember all the hopes and possibilities we had for Bell after that Sherrill trade, and especially after his one special game against Lee.

(moment of silence)

So long, Josh. In a few years you'll be as forgotten as Scott Moore and J.R. House, but it doesn't mean that we didn't love you and what you might have been for a little while.
