Some of my potential Day 2 draft targets

Great to see all the interest in the draft this year at Camden Chat!

This won't be a detailed post, just some of my quick thoughts on what the options are for the Orioles in the second and third rounds.

As is obvious from the first 60 picks, under the new CBA, signability is now a major issue. Gausman is not someone who I expect to sign for a significant amount below the allocation for the 4th overall pick, so the Orioles will probably not have any extra funds to play with. This is a shame, because the bulk of the talent in this draft class is on the prep side, and prep players are the strength of what the Orioles will get to pick from now. And with the limits on spending, the Orioles would be wise to select one with their second round pick, as the funds to sign a top prep will rapidly disappear.

Despite having selected a pitcher in the first round, several of the best prospects still on the board are prep arms. Ty Buttrey, Mitch Brown, Hunter Virant, Freddy Avis, Duane Underwood, Kieran Lovegrove, and Chase DeJong are all excellent arms with lots of upside, and several if not most of them would have already been off the board under the previous CBA.

Things are a bit thinner on the prep bat side. Tanner Rahier is a name that many thought would be called long before now, but his slippage suggests a strong possibility that he may not be very signable. Catcher Wyatt Mathisen, outfielder Jameis Winston, and second baseman Alex Bregman are my top remaining prep bats, but as a group are lower on my list than the available prep pitching. Some interesting prep bats who were much more highly regarded before the season are third basemen Trey Williams and Rio Ruiz. They have a lot of upside, but should be hard signs and lots of questions about their ability to reach that upside.

Were signability not an issue, I'd expect the O's to go for a prep here, but since it is, the O's may well target a college or junior college player. Some of the top remaining college bats are SS Nolan Fontana, C Tom Murphy, C Josh Elander, and 2b Tony Renda. Of the college arms, Alex Wood and Martin Agosta are the names that interest me the most.

There are a lot of very interesting JuCo players still available - pitchers Dylan Baker and Adrian Sampson and batters Fernando Perez and Andrew Toles topping my pref list.
