If you guys are anything like me, you love the hot stove. You love late July. You love looking at Cot's Baseball Contracts, reading up on MLBtraderumors.com, checking the Twitter. Here is your forum to talk about the Hot Stove and what the Orioles should/will do.
I am hoping that everyone realizes we are not sellers. I will agree with you that from a baseball standpoint it would make sense to get value for example a Jim Johnson. A team squarely in the wildcard hunt with 66 games left, with a fanbase starved for a winning season is not going to sell.
With that being said, I think we all breathed a sigh of relief when DD announced that Bundy and Machado were staying put (phewwwww). The Orioles are in the market for LF-3B-1B-SP, could obviously use a bat with high OBP and an innings eater. I personally believe that the only way we unload a bat is by getting rid of Reynolds (I still think he has value, look how bad James Loney or Casey McGehee is for their respective teams). If we get rid of Reynolds we can get a LF, and move Davis to 1B, or get a 3B and move Betemit to 1B, or just get a first basemen. Do we have to move Reynolds to make a deal for a bat? I guess we don't have to, and could platoon Davis/Reynolds/new guy somewhat.
About two weeks ago it seemed feasible that a Placido Polanco could be acquired to play 2B/3B, but with the solid play of Flaherty, and with Andino coming back in 2-3 weeks, along with the acquisition of defensive specialist Omar comin Quintanilla, that area no longer seems like a pressing need. Chris Davis has now become a below average, more comfortable, defensive left fielder, and with Endy Chavez's late inning defense back (and he has been swinging a better bat of late), do we really still need a LF?
Two weeks ago, many of us thought that we might acquire two new starters to bolster our pathetic rotation. But Miguel Gonzalez has proven he belongs in the rotation as the #3, Tillman has impressed in 2 out of 3, and Britton looked very strong in his last start vs Cleveland. Even Tommy "5 Runs All Earned" Hunter has turned in back to back QS's. Is a Jason Vargas really an upgrade to Tommy Hunter. Would it be logical to acquire a John Lannan and send Britton down to AAA to join Arrieta and Matusz in exile?
What do you think? What trade target makes sense for you. If we acquire a bat, how do we juggle Betemit/Reynolds/Davis/Thome. If we acquire an arm who do we send down? Do we really go after Chase Headley? Would you be willing to give up Schoop. What about these Hanley Ramirez, Josh Johnson rumors? Here you can rosterbate in peace. What should DD do? 66 games left, 36-30 might get us in the playoffs. I don't necessarily think that we will make the playoffs, but I do think a move would provide a tasty (adult) beverage for a very thirsty fanbase.
Note: I'll add a poll once we get some responses as to who we should acquire.
