I know I'm sort of new here and am pretty young, but I figured I'd give a FanPost a try.
I've always been intrigued by Justin Upton and his potential. As a quick recap, he was drafted #1 overall in 2005 and was in the majors by 2007 as a 19 year old. He is a five tool player, or has the ability to be one, with amazing speed, power, and range, in addition to a solid arm and bat. Last year was a career year for Upton, hitting .290/.369/.529 with 31 HRs and a 5.7 WAR. It seemed he was poised to breakout.
However, it didn't happen.
Upton has been a disappointment this year, "only" hitting .278/.353/.429 and 15 HRs. His power has gone down a bit, as has his slugging percentage (hitting only 42 XBH so far, compared to last year's 75). However, he has reportedly been battling a wrist injury all season.
Upton has had immaturity issues in the past, although nothing legal-related that I can recall. Part of that is likely due to his youth, and by several accounts, he has grown up. Despite this, the Diamondbacks have been shopping him for much of the season, which brings me to where the Orioles come in.
Would you trade for Upton? He is a right fielder, but I'm sure we could move the outfield around to accommodate him (he started as a CF but moved to right his rookie year). The Dbacks apparently were asking for two big leaguers and a prospect for Upton, which is an enormous price, but I feel that the Orioles could part with one or two of their younger pitchers (Arrieta, Matusz?) and one of our upper-middle prospects. I feel that Upton could give us a power outfield for the next 4 to 5 years.
What are your thoughts on this? I know that LF isn't that big of a hole right now, but after the season we will be looking at McLouth, who is 30, and a seemingly injury-prone Reimold. When the season is over, would you consider trading for Upton?
