Manny Machado knee injury: Machado to have surgery on knee, 4-6 month rehab

Rob Carr

Manny Machado is going to have surgery to repair his torn medial patellofemoral ligament after all, with an expected 4-6 month rehab.

Though the initial reports were that Manny Machado would be avoiding surgery due to the torn medial patellofemoral ligament injury that he suffered in the game against Tampa Bay on September 23, the Orioles announced on Thursday night that Machado will be having surgery on the ligament after all.

According to the beat reporters on Twitter, the Dodgers orthopedic surgeon will be performing the surgery on Monday and there is now an expected 4-6 months of rehab for the injury. By having the surgery now, Machado will hopefully be able to join the team fully for spring training, or at the very least, in time for Opening Day.

In announcing the news, the Orioles also provided insight from Machado on the decision to have the surgery. He said that he had sent the MRI results to a couple of doctors and they decided that "in the long run, and for my future as a baseball player, this surgery would be the best plan."

Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Dan Duquette told reporters that Machado has "the full support of the Orioles organization with this decision." Duquette is hopeful of seeing Machado ready for the start of spring training.

Additionally, the Orioles announced that starting pitcher Wei-Yin Chen had surgery on his knee to remove bone chips and should be ready by spring training.
