CC Home Run Derby League 2013!

Greg Fiume

The inaugural season of the CC Home Run Derby League was a resounding success, so we're bringing it back for 2013!

The rules are simple. Pick a team of seven sluggers from Major League Baseball, and win prizes for hitting the most combined home runs. Any player can be chosen, and the same player can be on multiple teams. Those players are on your team for the entire year. Last year's league standings and results can be seen here to give you an idea of how it works. Here's the catch though: The combined total of home runs hit by the players on your team in the 2012 season must be less than 162.

That total home run number has increased from last year because we're adding a twist this year. If you so choose, you can pick 1 player to be on your "bench", while still adhering to the 162 home run limit from the 2012 season. The bench player's home run total will not count towards your overall home run total. At any point during the season, you can make one and only one substitution. At this time, you can move your bench player into your starting lineup and bench someone else. Once your one substitution is over, there is no going back. You have to stick with the seven starting players on your squad for the rest of the year. This will add a little strategy to the game, and it could increase your chances of winning should there be a serious injury to one of your starters (but there does not have to be an injury for you to make the switch).

So your two choices upon entry into the league are thus:

1. Submit a list of seven players whose combined home run total from the 2012 season does not exceed 162.

2. Submit a list of eight players whose combined home run total from the 2012 season does not exceed 162. Designate one of those players as your Bench/Sub. At any point during the season, you can make one and only one substitution, bringing the bench player into your lineup and permanently benching one other player. Home runs hit by a player while "on the bench" do not count towards your total.

Just like last year, there will be a 50 "high-five" entry fee, due to me in Paypal gift format by the beginning of the season. There will be a prize awarded for most team home runs in each month, as well as a prize for the overall leader at the All-Star Break, and of course the grand prize for the overall winner at the end of the season. Prize values will be determined by the number of entries, with roughly 1/3 of the pool going to monthly winners and 2/3 going to the ASB and overall winners.

Entry fees and team player lists will be due to me by the start of the first game of the season (March 31). The email address to send both to is cornwell128 at gmail dot com.

Update: I have made my selections and emailed them to a trusted former mod for safe keeping. This way I will not gain any unfair advantage by viewing everyone's selections. You may now begin emailing me your teams.
