Baltimore Orioles Spring Training Notes - 3/3/13

USA TODAY Sports

Notes from the game and such

I did a little compiling from the sports pages and the beat writers' twitters on the spring training to dos. The Orioles are off tomorrow but will be back in action Tuesday against the Blue Jays.

About today's game:

-- The Orioles mashed four homers today and gave the Phillies a beatdown, 12-3. Their main victim was Jeremy Horst, who gave up six runs and 2 homers in 2/3 of an inning.

-- Miguel Gonzalez made his spring debut today and pitched well. He pitched two innings and gave up just a walk.

-- Chris Tillman's line didn't look great today (2.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR), but everyone in attendance said that the home run he gave up to Michael Young was severely wind aided, and most days in the regular season would have been a run of the mill fly ball.

-- Conor Jackson had himself a day today, hitting two home runs and knocking in four. If you want to read all about how useless spring stats are, check out crawdaddy's comments in today's open thread, but Jackson is tearing it up.

-- Matt Wieters knocked in five with a home run and a double.

-- Speaking of tearing it up, Brian Roberts is starting to make me wonder. He was on base two more times today with a single and a walk.

Regarding injuries:

-- Dylan Bundy was scheduled to pitch today but was held back due to groin spasms. It doesn't appear to be serious, but he won't pitch again until at least Thursday. Taking his place in the game today was Zech Zinicola, who I really hope makes the majors one day.

-- Nick Markakis also didn't play today, he's suffering from neck spasms. According to Buck Showalter, NIck's neck was too stiff to even move in the morning, but felt better as the day went on. The doctors don't think it's serious, but he won't play again until he's at 100%.

-- Nolan Reimold is scheduled to play in Tuesday's game as the designated hitter, but he still has soreness when he throws.

World Baseball Classic:

-- Both Adam Jones and Pedro Strop have left Spring Training to leave for the WBC. Team USA's first game is this Friday at 9 p.m. while Team DR's first game is Thursday at 6:30.

-- The Netherlands have gone 1-1 so far in the WBC, with Jonathan Schoop playing second base and going 0-for-6 with a walk in the two games.
