Part of being a baseball fan is crunching numbers and finding ways in which you can get different stories from tabulating different sets of data.
As viewers of MASN’s Orioles broadcasts know, any time the Orioles win and score five or more runs, fans will get 50% off of an online Papa John's pizza order the next day. But if you ever watch a Yankees broadcast on YES, you’ll see that Yankees fans get the same deal when the Yankees win and score SIX runs or more. What’s the deal? Papa John’s thinks it’s more likely that the Yankees will have a high-scoring game than the Orioles?
I decided to take this data and run with it. What did local Papa John’s affiliates think of each of the major league teams’ chances at the beginning of the year?
Let’s take a look, shall we…
(I should note at this point that I have not, nor am I planning on working at Papa John's. For the sake of full disclosure, I do love those little garlic dipping sauces.)
American League teams ranked by runs needed to get 50% off your next Papa John’s online order
Red Sox – Offer only given out every once in a while for a win
Rangers – 7 Runs
Yankees – 6 Runs
Rays – They need 10 strikeouts in a win to get the offer… I don’t know what to do with this factoid.
This could be interpreted as Papa John’s saying, “This team will win all the time and will break the bank!” or “We already have a deal with a local team or don’t have any stores nearby.”
National League teams ranked by runs needed to get 50% off your next Papa John’s online order
Giants – Offer only given out every once in a while for a win
Nationals – 7 Runs (was 5 Runs in 2012)
Braves – 6 Runs
Cubs – 3 Runs (That’s just kind of sad.)
Diamondbacks – Any amount of runs, for home wins only
*This team only gets a 40% off deal!
**Offer also applies to 2 Liter bottles of Pepsi.
