Orioles minor league rundown - 4/18/14

Christopher McCain/Norfolk Tides

Four games were played last night with two wins and two losses.

Norfolk Tides 0, Durham Bulls 3

The Tides were held to just three singles and one walk by Rays prospect Nate Karns. The best offensive performance, if you can call it that, was by Ivan De Jesus, who had a single and a walk. Henry Urrutia and Alexi Casilla had the other two singles.

Suk-Min Yoon started for the Tides and pitched 5 2/3 innings with two runs allowed, one earned. He wasn't exactly dominant as he gave up eight hits (one home run), but he didn't walk any and he struck out four, which is good news. Kelvin De La Cruz walked two and gave up one hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief. Brock Hutzinger pitched one perfect inning.

Bowie Baysox 6, Akron Rubber Ducks 7

The Baysox pitchers had a rough night, last night. Jake Pettit made the and while he lasted 5 2/3 innings, he walked three and gave up seven runs en route to giving up four runs. Ashur Tolliver relieved him and only got one out while giving up a walk and two hits.

The offense had a give third inning in which they scored five runs, three of which came in on 1B Christian Walker's three-run home run. CF Dariel Alvarez also homered in the game. DH Kyeong Kang had a big day with a single, a double, and a walk.

Frederick Keys 3, Carolina Mudcats 1 (11)

Branden Kline started for the Keys last night and pitched seven innings while giving up just one run. The run scored on a solo home run in the seventh inning, and he gave up just three other hits while walking just one. He needed just 90 pitches to get through seven innings. Lex Rutledge and Matt Hobgood each pitched scoreless two innings in relief. Rutledge gave up a hit and a walk with three strikeouts, and Hobgood had two walks.

The Keys scored just one run through the first ten innings of this game, a home run by SS Adrian Marin. In the eleventh inning they finally scored two more runs, all without getting a hit. Thanks to two walks, a wild pitch, and two sacrifice flies, the Keys took the lead and got the win.

1B Creede Simpson had a double and a walk on the day, CF Brenden Webb had a single and  a walk, and RF Lucas Herbst had two singles.

Delmarva Shorebirds 2, Greensboro Grasshoppers 1

The Shorebirds scored two runs in the top of the ninth to come back and win this game against Greensboro. Mitch Horacek started for the Shorebirds and pitched six innings with just one run allowed on a solo home run in the third inning. He struck out six and walked one, with five hits allowed. Dylan Rheault pitched two scoreless innings, though he walked two, and Jimmy Yacabonis pitched the bottom of the ninth for the save. He didn't give up a hit or a run, but he did walk the bases loaded (one intentional). Oops.

While the Shorebirds had nine hits on the day, just three of them came in the first five innings of the game. It was a big day for LF Gregory Lorenzo, who had three hits on the day. 3B Drew Dosch added two hits. In the ninth inning, Chance Sisco and Hector Veloz struck out for two quick outs, but singles by Federico Castagnini and Lorenzo kept the team alive. After Josh Hart reached on an error to load the bases, Trey Mancini singled in two runs to be the hero.
