Gwinnett (Atlanta) 3 Norfolk 5 (Game 1)
(CF) Julio Borbon went 4 for 4, stole a bag, and drove in 3. (3B) Cord Phelps hit a triple, drew 2 walks, and scored 3 times. Randy Wold started and went 3 scoreless. Nick Additon relieved and allowed 3 over 3 innings. Newly signed Robert Coello made his Tides debut and K'd 1 in a clean inning of work to earn the Save.
Gwinnett (Atlanta) 8 Norfolk 9 (Game 2)
Mike Wright's frustrating season continued as he allowed 9 hits and 6 runs over 5.1 IP. The 'bright side' (if one wishes to take an optimistic view of things) is that 8 of those hits were singles, and 3 of the runs allowed were unearned, courtesy of 2 Jemile Weeks throwing errors. Further, two of the runs charged to Wright were allowed to score by the reliever who replaced him, Ramon Ramirez. Clay Rapada closed things down with 3 Ks in his one inning of work to earn the Win.
The offense did what was necessary to keep the Tides in the game. (1B) Brett Wallace went 3 for 4 and hit his 10th dinger of the season. (3B) Cord Phelps went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. (LF) Quintin Berry was this game's stat-sheet bingo winner, as he went 1 for 1, drew 2 walks, drove in 1, scored once, stole 1 base, got picked off once, and notched an outfield assist.
Richmond (Giants) 0 Bowie 2
Zach Davies is so much fun. 7 shutout innings for him in this game. He allowed 6 singles, 1 double, and 1 walk. He threw 70 of his 98 pitches for strikes and induced 2 GIDPs. He K'd 4 and managed a 7:4 groundout to flyout ratio. This is his 4th shoutout outing of his last 5 starts. In those game he has totaled 26 IP, 12 H, 5 BBs, and 20 Ks. And he just turned 21 in February. I'd not be surprised if he forces his way into the top 5 of many Orioles prospect lists over the off-season. ( C ) Michael Ohlman and (SS) Garabez Rosa each went 2 for 3 with a double. (1B) Christian Walker went 0 for 1 but drew 2 walks and scored a run. In his 2 previous seasons, Walker managed to draw a total of 44 walks. He has 38 this season, and should be able to double that career total before season's end. Neat!
Potomac (Nats) 7 Frederick 5
oof...Sebastian Vader walked 6 over 3 and 2/3rds innings, leading to 5 runs (4 earned). Matt Hobgood allowed 1 ER over 3.1 innings of relief. The offense tried their best to keep pace with all of those Potomac base runners, with each starter save (2B) Jerome Pena getting a base hit. Glynn Davis went 2 for 4 with a walk and stole his 18th base of the season. (1B) Trey Mancini went 1 for 3 with a double and drew 2 walks. (DH) Jason Esposito has been hitting well of late. He went 2 for 5 and drove in 2 with a double.
Delmarva 9 Lakewood (Phillies) 2
Newly promoted (RHP) Janser Severino K'd 6 over 5 innings while allowing just 2 ERs. Jon Keller K'd 3 over 3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the Save. 1-2 hitters Gregory Lorenzo and Drew Dosch each knocked a double, drove in a run, stole a base, and scored twice. Chance Sisco went 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI.
Auburn (Nats) 1 Aberdeen 6
Break up the Ironbirds! After starting the season with a 1-16 record in June they have gone 9-3 so far in July, including their current 6 game winning streak. It helps when the offense is producing. One key contributor has been this year's 9th round selection, (3B) Austin Anderson, who has hit to the tune of .379 / .400 / .483 since joining the club on July 6th. He was 3 for 4 with a double in this game. ( C ) Tanner Murphy and (2B) Stephen Wilkerson each had 2 hits. Hector Veloz went 0 for 3, but drove in a run via a sac fly. 4 Ironbirds pitchers combined to hold the Doubledays to just 1 run, with Nigel Nootbaar earning his first professional Win.
