Toldeo (Tigers) 4 Norfolk 12
The Tides put up a 7 spot in the 5th and cruised to an easy victory. (LHP) Chris Jones (acquired from Atlanta last summer for Luis Ayala) went a season-high 7 IP and K'd 6 while limiting the Mud Hens to 3 runs (2 earned). The Tides' lineup boasted a hit for every starter, with five of them knocking at least 2 hits. (RF) Dariel Alvarez went 3 for 4 with a sac fly, 2 RBI, and 2 runs. (1B) Christian Walker was 1 for 4 with a walk and an RBI. (CF) Julio Borbon got 3 hits in 5 at bats, stole a base, and initiated a double play by throwing a runner out at 1st.
Harrisburg (Nats) 4 Bowie 2
(LHP) Eduardo Rodriguez had his finest start of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Senators put a 3 spot up in the 9th against Oliver Drake to steal the win. ERod went 7 innings and K'd 5, allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk. The one run which scored on ERod's watch was unearned thanks to a fielding error by the (SS) Sharlon Schoop. (LHP) Jason Gurka K'd the side in his one inning of work before Drake came on to try and close it in the 9th. (CF) Mike Yastrzemski continues to make his presence known at whatever level he happens to find himself. He had a triple and a single in his 4 at bats in this game. (2B) Nuiman Romaro knocked a double and brought in a run via sac fly.
Frederick 4 Myrtle Beach (Rangers) 0
(RHP) Dylan Bundy went 6 innings for the first time since August of 2012. While the stat line doesn't scream 'overpowering' (6 IP, 3 H, 2 BBs, 0 R, 1 K) due to the lack of Ks his stuff appeared crisp and controlled via the MiLB.tv feed I watched. After allowing a lead off infield single to start the game he induced a GIDP and had faced the minimum through 3. He would work out of 2 runner jams in each of the next two innings, inducing weak contact pop outs multiple times. In fact, though the Pelicans are a lineup of boppers who lead the Caroline league in HRs, SLG, and OPS, there wasn't a single well-struck ball off of Bundy all night. The FB was in it's (at the moment) typical range of 93 mph, and he moved it about the zone with ease and aplomb. But his best work of the night came with the change up which, though a bit firm (upper 80s velo) showed great late drop, particularly when he placed it right at the bottom of the strike zone. The velo will hopefully recover an mph or two or three as time goes on, but Bundy certainly looked like a guy who could help the O's out of the 'pen later this season.
(RHP) Matt Hobgood came on to start the 7th and worked the Pelicans over with his 94-95 mph sinking FB. He would close the game out 3 inning later without having surrendered a run or hit while K'ing 3. On offense, (SS) Adrian Marin had 2 hits in 5 at bats, including an RBI single. (1B) Trey Mancini blasted a solo HR. (RF) Chih-Hsien Change looked dreadful in RF costing Bundy two of the 3 hits he allowed, but did smack a HR later in the game.
Brooklyn (Mets) 6 Aberdeen 7
(LHP) Stephen Tarpley garnered a fair bit of excitement when the O's selected him in the 3rd round of the '13 draft. And he dominated Brooklyn for the 2nd time this season in this game: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 Ks. He also ended the 1st inning by picking off the one batter he walked on the night. His one hiccup came in the 3rd when he allowed a 1-out single, followed by a double, an infield single to drive in one, and then a sac fly. After that he would retire the next 9 in a row to round out his night. (DH) Austin Anderson and ( C ) Alex Murphy each had 3 hit nights. (3B) Hector Veloz went 2 for 5 with 2 Ks.
