Norfolk 5 Columbus (Cleveland) 2
(RHP) Mike Wright turned in the type of performance the O's have been awaiting all season: 7 IP, 7 H, 0 BB, 2 ER, 6 Ks. 63! of his 88 pitches went for strikes, and he induced 8 groundball outs to just 2 flyball outs. Hopefully he can string a few more outings similar to this together as the season winds down.
The offense allowed a rehabbing Justin Masterson to do their dirty work, drawing 6 BBs off him in 6.2 IP. (1B) Christian Walker drew two of those walks and also contributed with a sac fly RBI. (#TeamSteve) Steve Clevenger knocked two basehits and drove in a run. Newly acquired Jimmy Paredes played 3B and went 2 for 4 with a double, a stole base, a walk, and 2 RBI. Always good to impress the new bosses right from the get-go. (CF) Julio Borbon with your OF Assist of the night, throwing out a batter trying to stretch a single into a double. And ( C ) Brian Ward earned a pick off by catching a runner straying too far off 1st.
Altoona (Pittsburgh) 3 Bowie 1
(LHP) Tim Berry came back to earth a bit after two straight dominate outings. He allowed 3 ER over 5 IP, allowing 6 hits (including a 2 run HR in the 2nd) and 1 walk while striking out 3. He did pick off a runner at 1st though, which is always cool. The offense was unable to muster much in the way of a fight, in spite of the best efforts of lead off man Mike Yastrzemski who went 2 for 4 with a double. (CF) Glynn Davis got 1 hit in 3 at bats and stole a base. Two Outfield Assists in this game: (LF) Michael Burgess cut down a runner at home (though he also got himself thrown out at 2nd trying to stretch a single into a double. What goes around comes around), and (RF) Ronald Bermudez caught one trying to make their way to 3B.
Lynchburg (Atlanta) 11 Frederick 1
(RHP) Branden Kline was unable to get out of the first inning, as the Hillcats dropped a 6 spot on the Keys thanks to a combination of bad pitching and worse defense. The game started off with a hit by pitch, a stolen base, and then a walk. This was then followed by the first of three errors in the inning, this one by (SS) Adrian Marin who was unable to field a ball, which loaded the bases. A double scored two, followed by a single that scored two more and featured the second error of the inning by (RF) Chih-Hsien Chiang. Then another double to score the 5th run of the inning; all with none out. oof. Kline would get two groundouts, but his pitch count spilled into the 40s and it was time for him to call it a night. He would be charged with 3 ER out of the 6 R that scored. Miguel Calas pitched 4.1 solid innings before giving way to Jon Keller. Mr. Keller had his own adventures, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) over 2 IP that saw him give up 5 hits, walk 4, and K none. icky. The offense pretty much said 'screw this' and took the night off. (3B) Jason Esposito has been on a bit of a hot streak of late, slashing .375 / .390 / .675! over his last 10, which have featured 3 doubles and 3 home runs. He hit the 3rd of those in the 4th inning of this game.
Delmarva 2 Rome (Atlanta) 4
Not every Hunter Harvey Night can be a zinger. The young Padwan was hittable in this outing, yielding 8 base knocks, including a double and a triple, leading to 4 ER over 5 IP. On a brighter note, he only walked 1 and K'd 5. The offense was a bit frisky, but unable to translate 9 basehits and 3 walks into more than 2 runs. (CF) Josh Hart went 1 for 5 and swiped a bag, but K'd thrice. (3B) Drew Dosch went 2 for 3 with a walk and a SB. (1B) Creede Simpson also went 2 for 3 with a walk. ( C ) Chance Sisco went 1 for 4 with a run scored.
Connecticut (Tigers) 1 Aberdeen 2
The Ironbirds got multi-hit nights from (CF) Jay Gonzalez and ( C ) Alex Murphy to pace the offense. Gonzo stole a bag and scored both runs. But the pitching was the thing (as it needs to be if Aberdeen hopes to win a game, it seems) as (LHP) Bennett Parry and (RHP) Stephan Crichton combined for 8 shutout innings of work.
