Durham (Rays) 4 Norfolk 7
(RHP) Tyler Wilson worked out of bases loaded, 1 out jam in the 1st inning by striking out Bulls' hitters Wilson Betemit and Curt Casali. From there he would face the minimum over the next 3 innings before running into trouble again in the 5th. A homer, a double, and two singles led to three runs in the inning before a Steve Clevenger throw to 2nd shut down the rally. Wilson would go on to retire the next 6 in a row and finish with a respectable enough line of 7 IP, 10 H, 4 ER, 0 BBs, and 3 Ks to earn his first AAA level Win. 62 of his 88 pitches went for strikes, and he induced 9 ground outs to just 2 fly outs. Over 18 starts this season between Bowie and Norfolk he has posted 109.2 innings with a 3.69 ERA. He has K'd 98 while walking 26, allowed 11 HRs, and sported a groundout to flyout ratio of 1.16. I'm a big fan of his.
Back to the game...Evan Meek and Preston Guilmet combined to K 3 over the final 2 innings and close things out. Offensive work was provided by (SS) Cord Phelps who went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. ( C ) Steve Clevenger plated 2 via sac flies. (LF) Quintin Berry hit a double and stole a base. (RF) Francisco Peguero notched two OF Assists.
Bowie 0 Harrisburg (Nats) 7
(LHP) Jake Petit only lasted 4 innings, giving up 8 hits and 7 Runs (4 Earned). (RHP) Mychal Givens came on to toss 2 scoreless innings during which he K'd 4. ( C ) Michael Ohlman went 2 for 4 at the plate but earned a Passed Ball behind it and managed to get thrown out at it attempting to score on a flyball to LF. (1B) Christian Walker went 1 for 3 with a walk. It's good to see him not pressing at the plate and taking some free passes. He has now already matched his season total for walks (34) from last year.
Frederick 7 Salem (Red Sox) 6 (10 Innings)
A 10th inning single from (RF) Mike Yastrzemski brought in (SS) Adrian Marin who had led off with a single, to put the Keys ahead. Lil' Yaz finished 1 for 5 with a walk, a SB, a run, an RBI, 2 Ks, and a GIDP. Talk about filling up the stat sheet...(CF) Glynn Davis put together a 3 for 5 night and also stole a bag, but he also got caught trying to snag another. (DH) Jason Esposito is hitting .363 over his last 10 games. He put up a 3 for 5 night at the plate, driving in 3 while also stealing 2 bags. (RHP) Brady Wager allowed 6 ER and 10 hits over 5.2 innings. But the 'pen held on with 4.1 scoreless innings of work to secure the victory.
West Virginia (Pirates) 2 Delmarva 3
(LHP) Steven Brault induced a power outage in Salisbury, hold the WV squad to just 1 hit over 5 innings. The lone run to score against him was unearned, thanks to a throwing error by (3B) Drew Dosch. Jon Keller and Alex Santana worked 4 combined innings of relief, allowing just 1 run and striking out 5. (DH) Chance Sisco went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. (1B) Creede Simpson also doubled and knocked in a run. Your Delmarva OF Assist of the night was provided courtesy of (RF) Lucas Herbst who doubled up a runner off 1st after a flyball out.
Aberdeen 9 Staten Island (Yankees) 2
(CF) Jay Gonzalez went 4 for 6 with a double, an RBI, and 2 runs scored from the lead off spot. (3B) Austin Anderson drove in 2 with a single in the 5th inning. (1B) Hector Veloz went 2 for 4 with a triple and a walk. ( C ) Tanner Murphy had 3 hits in 4 at bats on the night. (LHP) Stephen Tarpley started, going 3.2 innings, while somehow only allowing 2 ER in spite of 6 hits and 4 walks issued. Local kid Nikolaus Neal Nowottnick K'd 4 over 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.
The GCL O's played two. 19 year old LHP Daniel Ayers went 3 innings in the first game, allowing 2 unearned runs via 3 hits and a walk. The offense was held to 2 hits, with Henry Urrutia getting one of those. Top pick in the '14 draft, 18 year old LHP Brian Gonzalez started game 2, going 2 innings without allowing a run while K'ing 2. (3B) Jomar Reyes knocked a double and drew a walk while scoring the game's lone run.
In the DSL, 19 year old Columbian Yezier Marrugo struck out 5 over 6 IP, allowing just 1 ER for the Uno Squad. While 20 year old Dominican Johalis Pacheco struck out 6 over 6 IP, allowing 4 runs (none earned) for the Dos Squad. (1B) Carlos Diaz went 0 for 4.
Today's Probables probably are:
Norfolk: (LHP) Chris Jones
Bowie: (LHP) Eduardo Rodriguez
Delmarva: (LHP) Luis Gonzalez
