Flying with Clipped Wings

As we are all well aware, the Orioles have been plagued by injuries for several years now. If it seems like we never have the full compliment of key players on the field at the same time, it’s because we haven’t. Of the current roster, many would consider five guys, excluding pitchers, to make up the core of the organization: Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, J.J. Hardy, Chris Davis, and Manny Machado.

These five players have not been in the starting lineup together in 182 games dating back to September 23rd, 2013 – a 5-4 loss in Tampa. Let that sink in for a moment. That’s more than an entire season’s worth of baseball.

Needless to say how disappointing it has been to start 2015 missing two of these guys. Getting Wieters and Hardy back will not only be important to the team’s success, but it will be important for the front office to get a glimpse of what this team is actually made of and how they perform together, as a whole, before going into what is sure to be one roller-coaster of an off-season with Wieters and Davis set to hit free agency.

Now if only Jonathan Schoop could stay healthy…
